Absolutely love my Prius Limited

Ben, 06/03/2022
2022 Toyota Prius Limited 4dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

I'm thrilled we bought our Prius Limited when we did (early Jan, 2022) because it sure is paying dividends now with these gas prices. The trim model just feels luxurious on what is unfairly seen as a dorky sedan. Never thought I'd purchase a Prius, but I love: - Hatchback storage - Higher, central display - Ease of shifting (gotta get used to it) - Three drive modes (POWER mode really makes this car zippy for getting on the highway) - JBL sound system - Visibility is fantastic on the inside. Moonroof in our package is worth it. Toyota SafetySense is great. Some critiques: - I love the touchscreen, but while fancy, I understand people may hate it due to the lack of analog buttons for climate controls. - I do wish it had bluetooth - instead of wired only - Apple CarPlay. - Would like Heads-Up Display working with CarPlay/Apple Maps. Directions in the HUD only work with the Toyota Nav. Also note this trim does NOT work with Android. - No dual climate for pax. If you want to feel great in a sedan, Prius Limited Trim is worth it.

Turn Back The Clock on High Fuel Prices

2021 Toyota Prius XLE AWD-e 4dr Hatchback AWD (1.8L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

Smart car with more buttons than the space shuttle. Excellent example of technology at its finest. Consistent 50+ miles per gallon. Great climate control system. Why my phone has to do the navigation, rather than the Prius Computers, is a total mystery. I had a Gen 1 Prius I loved. My daughter drives it now, (17+ years later). I missed the Prius intelligent layout of the dash board. Most cars you look down, and through the steering wheel to view the instruments. Prius is better, you can drive the car at night with no dash illumination in your eyes. The "quiet" is wonderful too. No power seats, no power hatch. I miss them for sure. Cruise control is absolutely perfect. The intuitive cruise control lever makes great sense. No looking down to find the right button. Headlights are spooky, as they move to illuminate the most important part of the road, and self level. Big miss is the light color trim on the dashboard. You will wear sunglasses on sunny days, to avoid the blinding glare reflecting off of that nearly white dash. The "CarPlay" system works, but has a "clunky" outdated feel to it. I bought a Prius for the great fuel economy, which requires saving weight. A better choice for me would be to: INCLUDE A SPARE TIRE, and maybe make up the weight by reducing the size of the rear glass. Glass is heavy, and the big back glass, does nothing to improve rear vision, which is only adequate, not great. Another place that the mileage reduction from a compact spare tire could be offset, may be with aerodynamics. Judging by how much dust collects on the rear bumper and hatch apron, I would guess the airflow degenerates into a horizontal vortex in the back of the car. Sure that is only a factor at highway speeds, but when you are looking for tenths of percent increases in mileage, every little thing helps. I think I will go on a diet. If I loose 10 pounds, I will get a few tenths better fuel economy. The other Big Mystery, is the "PRIUS STIGMA". Yes, it does seem to exist. The cars have a more sporty, conventional, look now (need more color choices). They have great acceleration, and an accurate speedometer. Amazingly accurate cruise control. Not sure why my Prius is, "the car to pass". As for me, I pass a Subaru, the ones that constantly go 10 MPH less than the posted limit. If the size works for you, then give the Prius a test drive. My guess is, you will find that things you heard, or maybe thought would be objectionable, were misunderstandings. It is a great car, and if you keep it a few years, the cost to own, and drive, is very reasonable. Addendum for second year: The seats still feel "cheap". The seats are very basic. A Toyota genius could invent a thin aluminum disk wheel with a skinny un-inflated tire, that you inflate with a gas cartridge when you need a spare tire. Thin enough to fit in the spare tire well, despite most of the space being used by the rear wheel electric assist. No excuse for not having a spare tire. A can of goop does not cut it in rural areas. As for the rear wheel drive assist, it works. The OEM "Toyo Nanoenergy" tires, are not snow tires, but the rear assist makes snow driving possible, up to a couple inches of snow. My Gen. 1 Prius was essentially useless on slick surfaces. The XLE AWD-e is a big improvement. I added a "Scan Gauge" so I could get real-time tire pressure monitoring. When you have no spare tire, the "tire low - warning light" comes on too late to be much help. Again... What were you thinking Toyota when you left out the TPMS display? Where I live a few streets have drainage swales, instead of underground culverts. If you cross them at more than 10 mph, the front bumper will bottom out hard. Vigilance required. I have had two "non-essential" fasteners from body molding fall out. Kind of disappointing they were not secure. I replaced them with new fasteners, using thread locker to secure them. All considered, a better city car than a rural car. Even getting 55 mpg, with near zero emissions, I suppose the Prius days are numbered (because) " It still burns gas".

Not reliable if you have a flat

2021 Toyota Prius LE AWD-e 4dr Hatchback AWD (1.8L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

This is our second Prius. I loved our 2014. So we traded it in for a 2021. Huge mistake. This one didn’t have a GPS system. It had only 1 glove compartment instead of 2. AND we didn’t realize until this week that it doesn’t come with a spare tire!!! Unacceptable. It comes with a can of fix a flat. That doesn’t work when the local car wash tract yanks off a tire sensor. I had just pulled out of the car wash and turned right. Pulling away I start to hear wop wop wop. I had to go two blocks before I found a place to pull in. I see the ! on. Back passenger tire is flat. I call AAA. He comes and lifts the trunk out to find- no spare. He had to tow me home. We take the tire off and go to Costco. They find the inside tire shredded with the way the sensor was broken off. They don’t carry that tire. So back in the car and off to Toyota. 3 hours late they gave us a tire but don’t have a sensor. So I have now spent 8 hours trying to fix a flat and it still isn’t finished. This is unacceptable!!!!! Bring back the spare tire. The tow truck guy says he is seeing this on a regular basis. Again, not acceptable! If this had happened on a highway we could be stuck somewhere for days before we got the correct tire and sensor!
