Don't bother with the paint protection package grab a bottle of Nu Finish and save yourself the cost. I would not recommend the AWD model unless you are in a northern climate where it can get a workout in the snow.

Matrix Headache

I purchased this car new with the intent of keeping it a long time with Toyota's reputation. This is the 5th brand new car I have purchased and my first Toyota. It is also my last Toyota. I have never had more problems or put more money into maintaining a car than this one. I just traded this car in with only 83,000 miles on it because I did not want to sink any more repair money into it. Unusual problem areas: neck to gas tank was rusting and would not allow gas cap to seal so car will not pass state emission tests - cost of total repair was over a thousand. Transmission failures after 80k on Matrix (cost over 3k).

I was one of the first people in my area of Southern Maryland to own this car, and let me tell you, it attracted some attention... and rightly so. I bought the car for my travels back and forth (college and home) which includes everything from extreme weather conditions, mountains (where they have tractor trailer run-offs) and steep grade inclines and declines. My drive also took me on the Washington beltway 495 during rush hour. I live and work with horses, art, road trips, and did I mention animals galore? This car has been able to keep up with me and I haven't had a single mechanical problem to date. I find new ways my car tailors to me everyday with all the compartments and folding seats

I have found this to be a great ride for the money. Fuel milage is great and the ride is fine even for long trips. I spend a lot of time in the car and am a large person and find it has plenty of room and is comfortable on a long ride. Even after 60000 miles I have had not problems. It performs and accelerates as well as the day I purchased it. I would recomend following the maintenance requirements for long term reliability.
