Love my Matrix

Having driven and owned many different vehicles, I have never encountered one that I enjoy as much as I enjoy my Matrix. It responds quickly, drives smoothly, gets great gas mileage, holds 4 people comfortably enough for a 3000 mile road trip and looks sporty and fun. Complaints: The air conditioner quit because of an internal air filter that neither I nor my mechanic knew existed. (Once it was discovered and changed the A\C began to work again.) My standard transmission stalls too easily when starting off in first gear. The body has been marred in several places by minor bumps.

A cowboy car

I didn't know what I was getting into buying a used high performance car. The shift/clutch was so difficult I had to go back and get lessons from a mechanic (after 42 years of driving stick). Then I had to get new brakes and new tires (costing twice as much as for a standard Matrix), because the previous owner in Jersey had apparently driven fast and slammed on the brakes a lot. I am concerned that in the not-too-distant future I'll be forced to replace the clutch to the tune of $700. So even though it's cute and fun to drive, I'm seriously considering turning it in on a "regular" (not sporty) Matrix.

Best car ever!

This is by far the best car made for the price. I was looking for an all around vehicle, with some hauling capability and good gas mileage. But I didn't want an SUV and I also didn't want to spend a fortune. It's extremely reliable - so far ;-) - and is a blast to drive. I have the base model w/auto and though I've heard others complain about the lack of power, I never have any problems passing when needed. A fantastic car, that's for sure!

Fun Car

With an automatic it is a little underpowered. The fun factor of the car is impressive. I read Edmunds review and I don't think they did this car justice. The handling was very good. It huggs the road like glue. Take off is good for an econemy four cylinder. I think the power of the XR model might be better at low end than the XRS. The exhuast note is very cool. It has a racey sound to it. The value is very good. I looked at a Rav4 but you get more for your money with the Matrix. I think it should be noted that viewing this car online makes it appear to be in-line with a Ford Focus. Not true. Actually this is an SUV/Car.

Now I take the long way home

I love my Matrix. It looks sharp, it's well built, and it gets great mileage. What's most impressed me is how well it's designed. From the outside it's a surprisingly small car, even shorter than the '03 Corolla. But when you sit inside the height and headroom make it seem much larger. The driver's seat provides a commanding view of the road, and the back seats have lots of legroom. The rear cargo area is easy to access and very functional. It's quick enough, but certainly not a sports car. If you want to haul lots of stuff, but don’t want a road hog, gas guzzling SUV, the Matrix is an ideal alternative.
