Used 2017 Toyota Highlander Consumer Reviews
The wind noise!
Love my new Highlander except for one thing. When I go past 45 or there is a strong crosswind, there is a whistling noise on the front passenger window, nothing on the driver sider. Dealer said it's a "normal characteristic" of the car because it occurred in a 2015 Highlander also and there is nothing they can do till Toyota issues a "TSB, " Technical Service Bulletin, on how to fix it. Wind noise would be ok but whistling noise is fairly annoying, especially at highway speed. If a quiet cabin is not an important criteria then this is a great car. Otherwise, I would stay away till it's fixed.

Big car, little storage.
It has a comfortable, fairly smooth ride. Features are easy to figure out. My complaints: Needs more storage inside the car including some small compartments as well as somewhere to hang a small trash bag. Also all levels should come with a better camera view when backing up and on a sunny day the glare on the display makes it impossible to see anything on the screen. My biggest complaint though is I had the car in the dealer for a hesitation problem, three times, and they found nothing. Finally the Toyota issued a recall for that exact problem three years later, this past October, but did not have a fix for the recall for FIVE more months. It was fixed in March.

From a Prius to Highlander...
I recently purchased a 2017 Highlander XLE while my 2010 Prius (107,000 miles) was getting an oil change. Call it an "impulse" buy, but I had been researching the Toyota Highlander for quite some time and with 0% financing available & a great deal from the local dealership, I left my Prius in the service department and drove home a brand new 2017 Highlander in Celestial Silver Metallic. I've now had it a little over a week. Initial impression? Fantastic vehicle. Very quiet. User-friendly. Creature comforts that aren't "over-the-top". Entune system is great. Of course, I'm putting more gasoline in it than my former Prius, so that will take some getting used to. My biggest surprise? I emailed my insurance agent to change coverage over to the Highlander and it is over $100/year CHEAPER to insure the brand new 2017 Highlander than it was to insure a 2010 Prius!! What does that tell me? This vehicle is safe on the road. The sight lines are much better than the Prius (that's not really saying much) and the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) is very helpful along with the Lane Departure Alert (LDA). I am enjoying driving a bigger vehicle and will write another review after the "newness" factor wears off a bit. For now, very impressed and confident in this purchase. More to come, later...

Great Utilitarian Vehicle - Smooth and Reliable!
I bought this off-lease at 28k miles. After 7k miles I can offer the following: Reliability: Five stars, V6 main reason I bought it over a turbo engine - car feels solid, haven't had to fix anything since I bought it. Previous Nissan car was falling apart. Power: Four Stars: Power is adequate on ECO mode, but if you have a heavy foot you have to turn on the Power mode in the center dash screen every drive at touch of a button to make throttle a hint more responsive to squeeze a bit of fun out of drive. Use this in town, but turn it off on highway. For a fun to drive SUV look elsewhere. Auto shut-off at stops is noticeable but I don't mind it - using Power mode will disable auto shutoff. Seat and Ride Comfort: Four Stars: Perforated leather is adequate and seat has plenty of adjustability, but ride on the firm side compared to a Nissan Murano. Seat ventilation is adequate and heated seats are real nice. Visibility: Four Stars: Good, except left side side mirrors are large so have a blind spot when turning left - have to raise my head to make sure I look past blind spot. Be aware this exists and you should be ok. Technology: Two Stars: System feels old without apple CarPlay. Entune system is practically useless. Bluetooth work pretty well. JBL system sounded cheap, but replacing tweeters on dashboard improved sound a good bit. Safety: Five Stars: BSM works pretty well. Auto Emergency breaking has worked for me on two occasions. Dynamic radar cruise controls works well. Lane departure works but it's not needed so I turn it off. Auto high beams work well, except on inclines they don't work as well. Practicality: Five Stars: Car has ample room, captain seats make car feel more airy and allow long items to fit through center without putting down seats every time. Dash shelf is pretty handy, but stuff does move around since it's not secured. the center armrest storage is large so can fit medium size purse and lots of other stuff. Glove is on the smaller side for a car this size. Tow capacity is 5,000 lbs - so handy should I need to tow a trailer. Access: Four Stars: I'm 5'-6", wife 5'-3" so entry is "ungraceful" with the seat bolster digging against your behind when entering vehicle front seats. Adding running boards fixed this. Overall it's a good safe bet of a car, on the boring side, yet reliable and practical. Just remember why you're buying this vehicle. Dec 2021 Update: Have grown to like the car much more. The bluetooth is pretty quick to connect with iPhone, and when used with apple watch and apple music, can use siri to play any music I want, even ask siri to look up directions. I mount phone on right hand side of steering wheel on air vent, and is a perfect location, apples maps pulls up directions automatically when I ask Siri for directions, or change music fairly quick. I recently got 29 mpg on the highway by going between 65-70 mph, which is pretty good for this size vehicle. Best of all, in year and a half and 21K miles I've driven it, I've had zero problems! just changed oil about 3 times, that's it! I feel pretty confident now this car will easily reach 200k miles. If you're considering this car and want to keep it for many miles and years, I'd say go for it! July 2022 - Car now at 56k miles. Zero issues so far, just a few oil changes and new tires of my choice at 30k. Getting about 28-29 mpg high high at 70-75mph. Have grown to really appreciate the car. Powertrain is pretty smooth, though acceleration is adequate. If you're looking for a three row used SUV, this is as reliable and solid as it gets, but will never win the fun to drive category. The highlander is the Corolla of SUVs. Would like to upgrade to 2022 HL hybrid, but gas would need to be like $7/gal to make up the extra cost to upgrade. Would rather take vacations for now. 7-5-25: Car stills runs great. At 98k mi. had to replace water pump and a torn driver side VC axle. 8k later still drives great. I test drove a ridgeline, but after jumping back on HL, realized it’s still too comfortable to trade in. So keeping this one for at least another 10 years if it’s able to keep up with just routine maintenance. these model cars are keepers if you find one at a decent price.
Best SUV I Have Owned
Very comfortable crossover with nice interior. I am 6'4" and have plenty of room in the drivers seat. The standard safety features include dynamic cruise control, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic warning and pedestrian warning all work well and enhance the safety of the vehicle. Start-stop function is smooth and responsive and can be disabled if the driver does not want the added fuel savings. New 6 cylinder engine with 8 speed transmission proved sufficient power and smooth acceleration. The third row seating is limited and can only be used for adults during short trips or kids. Quality interior and exterior fit and finish.
