Gets even better with age
Our Highlander is nearing 100,000mi (we bought it with ~30k) and this car is relentlessly reliable. Oil changes and tires are all I've done, with the exception of the driver's window motor that broke and needed repair. The only con is the stereo, which sounds tinny. Other than that, it's comfortable, reliable, great in the snow or rain, and has a design that looks ever better with age. UPDATE: I wrote a review years ago but thought I'd update it. Our Highlander is now 10+ years old and has 130k miles. Still relentlessly reliable. Only needs gas, oil changes, brakes and tires. The only thing has ever broken was the driver's window motor. Last month I drove it to the mechanic and asked them to look at everything, looking for any possible issue. Nothing. They said I could change the transmission fluid if I wanted to. (I did). I've never experienced a car built to last like this. I'll come back here for the 200k mi update and I have no doubt it'll be the same: relentlessly reliable.

Fails to start after sitting
I only have 8000 miles and I got the car in Feb 2013. Every time I go away and leave the car for a week, it won't start when I return. Every time the temperature drops below 25F and it sits even 4 days, it won't start. Toyota has replaced the battery twice although the second time they said there was nothing wrong with it. They have run diagnostics and say there is nothing wrong. Every car in my neighborhood starts. Our Honda starts, our old Blazer starts, but not the Highlander. I am soooo disappointed with this vehicle. Toyota is supposed to be reliable, but mine isn't.

4th & Favorite Toyota!
Toyota has been a part of my life for 20 yrs. I love the reliability and in recent years, the stereo system are far better than other makes. The suspension and light weight power are impressive over my previous 4runners. Enjoy the room and captain seats in the rear. I saw reviews on the navigation, etc. Mine work just fine but there is a lot of stuff that requires 2 manuals for multiple options. This is a fun vehicle to drive I can feel the engine power over heavier older SUV's I have owned. The sound system is better than ever and Toyota has higher quality systems in general. The only thing I don't like is how Toyota does not have paint durability like older models.

Everything is perfect
We purchased this vehicle for 9 months and are totally satisfied. We tried the Ford Explorer, the Honda Pilot and the Nissan Pathfinder but they all had one or more irritating aspect. The Highlander was perfect; everything was just right: the horsepower, steering, suspension, seats. It drives like a car and can transport 6 or 7 people (but not their luggage).
Problems with Toyota Highlander
Problems: 1My Multifunction Display intermittently stops working. I have taken it to the dealership and had a soft wear upgrade that did not solve the problem. I contacted Toyota Customer Service and had a case number assigned. I called multiple times and was told it was a district manager decision and they would get back to me. You can guess that they did not get back to me. After more phone calls my problem was sent to the National level for review. My highlander was still 3 months within the 3 year and 36 month Factory warranty period and just over the mileage. (Less than 37000). Toyota refused to help me despite the fact that I have owned a number of Toyotas and keep the highlander serviced. (The replacement cost is thousands of dollars). I usually buy the extended warranty on my vehicles, but online reviews says Toyota is very reliable and that the extended warranty not needed. That may have been true in the past, but in my opinion is not true now. Please don't make the same mistake I did and count on Toyota Reliability. Also don't count on Toyota to stand behind the products.
