It's ... a mule?

I bought my 2007 FJ in 2017, so I was aware it might have some "used car issues" that came with it. I was pleasantly surprised it was in really good shape. It's really not a bad SUV at all, it's just not what I "need". When they first came out I was dying to get one but couldn't justify the up-front costs when I looked at my needs. However, 10 years later this baby showed up and was quite affordable with only 110k miles on the odometer. I drove down to the dealership the very day it popped up on the car shopping site I was using and traded in my 2007 (225k miles) Suburban for it. I wish I'd kept the Suburban. PROS: We have the base model with the 6 speed manual transmission, rear locker option, subwoofer option, and upgraded radio (that the volume control no longer works and I have to use the steering wheel controls to manage sound). It's been reliable to a fault. If you are a serious rock or mud crawler then this thing is built for you (hence why it might not be best, for ME). My son calls it a "Tonka Tank" and loves it (but not as much as his CJ - it's harder to park the FJ). I think if I could find a tree wide enough it could climb it. It's steady and stable in snow and icy conditions. I've NEVER needed the lockers OR 4-Low with this thing (on the farm or in the snowy conditions here in WV). It's super easy to clean the interior. The dash layout is intuitive, simple, and clean. Everything is within easy reach. CONS: I HATE the visibility. I've gotten used to the poor rear visibility, but that doesn't mean I LIKE it. It's also been eating brakes - 2 sets of rear rotors since I bought it. The interior is typical Toyota "plain" - not luxurious (I knew that going in). The rust-proofing is abysmal. It only has 125k miles on it now (I work from home, so I don't drive a lot) and my rear door is already rusting out near the key lock. The rock rails that came with it are bubbling and rusting and the frame is also really scaly with rust. I wash it monthly even if it doesn't really need it. The other thing I'm unhappy about is the gas mileage. I didn't expect Prius-like MPGs, but this thing doesn't even come close to decent. I expected to get better mileage given the manual tranny, but that's not the case. I get 11 mpg around town and the BEST I've ever seen on the highway is 19 mpg. I average around 14 mpg, overall. I use premium gas, have done a full tune up, cleaned the throttle body, slightly over-pressurized the tires, etc. and nothing helps. Anyone around my home will tell you, I drive like a little old man. I am slooooow. In comparison, my 4x4 Suburban LTZ (5.3 liter) got 15 mpg around town, 23 on the highway and had FAR more room and comfort. The only issues I had with the 'Burb were 2 oil pressure sending units in one year, one set of brakes, and all-terrain tires were a pain (or really expensive) to find for it. I just didn't want to hunt/fish with it because it was all nice leather and super comfy. Who'd wanna mess that up all that luxury? LOL So all-in-all it's reliable, unstoppable, hungry, and plain. Basically, it's a mule. I just don't need a mule and will replace it with another Suburban, or maybe a Tacoma or Tundra, later this year because they just better fit my needs overall. Am I glad I bought it? Yep, it's been fun. Would I buy another? Not likely, unless I could find a way to justify having two cars for myself.

Well, it's been about 6 weeks since I bought my FJ and I must say I love it. I had doubts about the blind spots at first, but moving the mirrors have helped out a lot. For the size of the car, it has good pickup and the fuel economy has been around 20 mpg to and from work.

This vehicle is tight, fun to drive, gets lots of thumbs up, and I expect to own it at least 10 years. It was much better at highway speeds than I expected.
