Used 2002 Toyota Corolla Sedan Consumer Reviews
Most expensive car I have ever bought
I purchased this vehicle one year used with 30,000 miles on it. At first, I enjoyed the vehicle but after the brakes went out, the transmission went out at 70,000 miles, and the interior began to peel away, I decided that the vehicle did not meet my expectations. Despite following all suggested maintenance, the vehicle continued to have serious mechanical failures. The day that the brakes went out frightened me pretty badly. Based on my experience, I don't plan on owning another Corolla.
Unfinished project sold to market
Gets about 30mpg about everywhere. Never had an issue with reliability but oil consumption... head gasket tends to go bad... I spend $8 month REFILLING the oil. Safety... no anti-lock breaks... no bells/whistles. Front airbag only (does it work?). Should be illegal to produce a car so equipped. Car rusts easily, no fiberglass to speak of... junking this one because it's badly corroded over 15 years. It also has numerous dents, some serious, that were incurred from no more than sliding into stuff in bad weather. Car crumples like nobody's business. Exhaust rusted off 12 years after manufacture... 1,000 dollars a year on average upkeep and yet I can tell I'm losing ground nonetheless. Pretty sure Toyota intended that this car not last the decade of its manufacture... uses a hybrid engine without the battery (reason it gets 30 in the city) and without the proper cams! 10 mpg penalty for no reason at all... oh, well to boost the oil companies.

Should have been part of the big recall
I highly recommend you throw the driver side floor mat into the back seat like I did. After the little metal piece that holds the floor mat in place broke off I almost had a wreck! Stupid mat jammed under my accelerator. I almost did not get the car stopped and would have wrecked if the road had not been straight. Otherwise this has been an awesome car!
Die hard Toyota owner
I require three things out of a car-- 100% reliability, ice cold A/C, and a decent cup-holder. The Corolla turns out to be a bit cheaper than the Altima for basically the same features, so there you go. My Corolla LE is a class act, comfy, quiet, peppy, and I thought I was miscalculating when I consistently got between 32-38 mpg, during the Dallas summer WITH THE A/C ON! I wasn't miscalculating--this car gets better mileage than my friend's gas-electric hybrid (28-32 mpg)! I did have to do a brake job at 22,000 miles. But I've forgiven and forgotten--one mechanical problem in 3 Toyotas isn't a bad record.
Affordable, Reliable, Economical...
When we first purchased the car, it was for my son to use to get to and from school. Rising insurance and gas prices have pushed me to utilize the vehicle more often. I've seen that in the past few months I have been using our Corolla more than my son! The car is a perfect, not overdone or underdone, combination of performance, value, and comfort. It just works! I'd recommend this car for anyone.
