Part of the 12th Corolla generation introduced for 2019
Overview
The Toyota Corolla Hatchback, along with its sedan sibling, is currently the smallest car in the automaker's U.S. lineup. The hatchback version has four doors, seating for five, and a cargo area that's slightly more practical than the sedan's. There isn't much to make the Corolla hatch stand out against its competition, but it's a well-rounded option that delivers a good mix of features, fuel efficiency and fun.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl CVT) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $2.77 per gallon for regular unleaded in Tennessee.
Edmunds spotlight: How good is the Corolla Hatchback?
The Corolla's four-cylinder can seem a bit underpowered at times, like when you're quickly trying to get up to highway speeds with a few passengers aboard. Otherwise, this little Toyota is more fun to drive than it has any right to be. It's nimble around turns and gets high fuel economy to boot. The Corolla Hatchback's main drawback is the size of its cargo area. Due to a relatively high load floor, the Corolla hatch doesn't offer as much space as its competitors. Still, there's more room than in a similarly sized sedan.
Competitors to consider
The Toyota Corolla Hatchback competes with other compact hatches such as the Honda Civic, Mazda 3 and Subaru Impreza. Because there are so few hatches left on the market, car shoppers might also look at extra-small crossover SUVs. These models are typically more expensive but often offer all-wheel drive and elevated seating. Top models we recommend include the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30. Toyota's Corolla Cross, which is a crossover version of the Corolla, is another good pick.
Which Corolla Hatchback does Edmunds recommend?
For the best balance of features and value, go for the top-trim XSE grade. It doesn't cost that much more than the base SE, and for the extra money you get handy features like a power driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a wireless charging pad, and blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert.
Save as much as $1,203 with Edmunds Click on the trim you’re interested in to see what Edmunds suggests you should pay to get a good deal. Savings vary by trim; $1,203 refers to estimated savings off of MSRP for the XSE trim.

2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE Nightshade Edition 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
I needed a second/ commuter car that looks cool and gets great gas mileage. Car is smooth to drive, nice steering feel doesn't have that front wheel drive steering pull in corners, has plenty of go to get out in traffic. Interior is nice and comfortable, infotainment system is good and stereo is better than expected! It needs a subwoofer to fill in sound. I'm getting 30+ in combination … city/hi way driving motor is still breaking in with 600 miles on it. Over all I like it alot! Alot better that my CLA250 for less that half the price.

2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6M)
I tried to buy a Toyota Hybrid, ALL were either pre-sold or were marketed over sticker & most with big profit Dealer add-ons with one purpose, to jack up the price. I stumbled on this slick available Corolla SE Hatchback with sticker milage ratings of 32/41 MPG.
We took it for a test drive, loved it & bought it for sticker price (+ armor coating) a markup dealer add-on.
First off this … is not a "hot Hatch" with a high rev screaming engine, it Is however, a peppy commuter with adequate power AND a tight build with no squeaks or rattles not to mention it's bigger on the inside than the outside. It's got just about everything (other than heated seats) & includes two years of service for very little cash.
We've had it nearly two weeks, in that time we haven't driven our 2023 BMW X2 once. We're averaging near Hybrid 35 MPG at ten to twenty grand less than a Toyota Hybrid
We love it

2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6M)
Dependable, good-looking, comfortable, and convenient. All very relatable adjectives to describe what the Corolla Hatchback delivers to its user. If you want the full experience, get the 6-speed. This car has just the right amount of spunk to take corners with high RPMs.
