If you're considering the Corolla Cross, the Hybrid is the one to get. It offers superior fuel economy to the standard model with few drawbacks. It's easy to drive, and its long list of standard driver assist features in combination with generous cargo space make it a great entry-level choice for new families and younger drivers.

- Touchscreen interface is easy to use
- Quicker and more efficient than standard Corolla Cross

- Engine can get loud and buzzy during hard acceleration
What's new
- New hybrid version of the Corolla Cross
- Toyota-estimated fuel economy of 42 mpg combined
- Standard all-wheel drive
- Part of the first Corolla Cross generation introduced for 2022
Overview
Toyota introduced the Corolla Cross SUV last year to fill the gap between the larger RAV4 and the now discontinued C-HR subcompact. Now there's an additional model within the lineup: the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. As you'd expect, it's just like the regular Corolla Cross but has a hybrid powertrain that provides better fuel efficiency.

Toyota estimates the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid will get up to 42 mpg in combined city/highway driving. This is a big increase over the regular all-wheel-drive version of the Corolla Cross, which gets 30 mpg combined. Notably, the hybrid powertrain is also more powerful than its non-hybrid sibling and comes standard with all-wheel drive.
Overall, we like the Corolla Cross and think it's worth a look if you're interested in an inexpensive small SUV that gets high fuel economy. But it might also be worth your time to cross-shop the Kia Niro. It's also a pint-sized hybrid SUV but has a few advantages over the Corolla Cross. Toyota's Prius hatchback and larger RAV4 are also viable options.

We drove the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7.5/10
How does the Corolla Cross Hybrid drive? The Corolla Cross Hybrid's driving experience can be defined in one word: easy. This is the type of crossover that delivers exactly what it promises. It needed 7.9 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph, which makes it substantially quicker than the standard gas-only Corolla Cross (which took a lazy 9.6 seconds to do the same deed). Power delivery is immediate and smooth, and it feels like the electric motor gives the Hybrid version a nice kick as you pull away from a stop. In daily driving, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is perfectly simple in operation and largely stays out of your way.
Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Corolla Cross Hybrid? The Corolla Cross Hybrid provides suitable comfort for the daily grind. It absorbs most road bumps without trouble, though on occasion it can feel a bit too soft and floaty if the road has consistent undulations. The front seats have decent cushioning but come up a bit short on thigh support for taller drivers. The rear seatbacks are set at a comfortable degree of recline.
There's a noticeable level road noise that enters the cabin at highway speeds. Also, you'll notice noise and vibration from the engine, which is mild when cruising but highly intrusive when accelerating or climbing a hill. But on the upside, the air conditioning works great on hot days, and the Corolla Cross Hybrid has rear air vents, which is not a given in this class.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The Corolla Cross Hybrid feels spacious in most passenger areas with the surprising exception of rear legroom; it's among the tightest in the class. The cabin is otherwise pretty easy to get in and out of, and the interior layout is practical and simple. The 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is easy to use.
Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with a solid number of driver assist features. These include adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance. Most of the systems performed as expected during our testing, and we didn't experience any false alarms. The adaptive cruise's following distance, though, is tuned a bit too conservatively to operate effectively in rush-hour traffic. Be ready for other drivers to pull in front of you.
The optional JBL audio system produces decent clarity and punchy bass. There's no onboard navigation system, which is becoming more common these days since many people prefer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? There is enough storage space inside the Corolla Cross Hybrid to stash most small items away. The main cupholders and doorbin water bottle holders are of decent size, and the center console is deep enough to fit other items like your glasses, phone or wallet. The hybrid does have slightly less storage than the regular Corolla Cross (21.5 cubic feet compared to 25.2 cubic feet), but it's still generous enough for grocery runs or fitting a few suitcases.
Got small children? Installing a large child safety seat won't be quite as easy as it is in other SUVs due to the Corolla Cross' narrower lower door opening and rear legroom handicap. All anchor points and top tethers are clearly marked and easy to access.

Fuel Economy
9/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA says the Corolla Cross Hybrid should get 42 mpg in combined driving. Our test vehicle actually outperformed the EPA estimate on our real-world evaluation route, logging a combined 45.6 mpg. Some hybrids we test come up short in our testing, so it's nice to see the Corolla Cross Hybrid doing well here. It's a genuine fuel-sipper.
Value
7.5/10
Is the Corolla Cross Hybrid a good value? Build quality on our test model was more than passable. The panel gaps were tight and little to nothing rattled. But we'd like slightly nicer materials for the touch points like the steering wheel, shift knob and radio controls, especially at this car's asking price. That said, we're mostly satisfied with the car's quality.
Toyota's basic and powertrain warranties are par for the course. You get three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage. However, the complimentary maintenance plan for two years/25,000 miles with roadside assistance is a nice perk.

Wildcard
7.5/10
The Corolla Cross Hybrid isn't meant to stand out — it's meant to be a nice place to temper your lead-footed habits and to make sure you don't spend too much on gas. Its long list of amenities, and Toyota's reputation for reliability, will hopefully give buyers peace of mind. It's the kind of car that does exactly what it says on the packaging, and that's all it needs to.
2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid trim level differences
The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is available in three trim levels: S, SE and XSE. All versions are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a hybrid system (196 combined horsepower) that drives all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission. Standard features include: Compare the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid trim levels in-depth.
Which Corolla Cross Hybrid trim does Edmunds recommend?
We don't always suggest the top trim level, but we'd go with the fully loaded XSE. For only a few thousand dollars more than the base model, the XSE includes appealing features such as upgraded upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a digital instrument panel, and front and rear parking sensors.

2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
This car is more of a "station wagon" by design and proportion, rather than a boxy "SUV." This suits me just fine. I have the 2023 Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid. The headroom is amazing for my 6" frame, and the ground clearance make entrance and exit easy. The ride is fun, zippy, and responsive, and its fuel economy is impressive! As well, it offers excellent visibility all around from the … driver’s seat. The interior trim of my XSE model is very nice, although I don't care for the "floating tablet" infotainment screen. Only one serious gripe: NO SPARE TIRE! Currently, the hybrid CC's only get a spray-can to fix a flat, which is only helpful with minor leaks. Overall, I highly recommend the Corolla Cross hybrid AWD for its size, easy parking, very short turning circle, and fun, athletic ride!

2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
One year update: I am still very pleased with this vehicle. I had only 1 problem -- a buzzing speaker, which was replaced. I would note that my mileage is better than predicted. With about 20% freeway and 80% city/other driving, I get ~ 47.5 MPG (instead of ~ 44). And I figured out the phone charger -- have to rotate phone 180. Overall very happy with the performance and pickup. Great in … the snow. Glad I did not opt for the RAV4.
---- Initial review: I picked up this car 2 days ago and drove it 90 highway miles home, and then in town. This was a great choice, the best in "small" SUVs. We had a 2017 RAV4, and considering a replacement for my 2009 Prius, I had gotten on the list for a Prius Prime. After 8 months, I started looking around for a small SUV instead, focusing on the Subaru Crosstrek. Unfortunately, that car is no longer made as a hybrid, and the new RAV4s have gotten so big, they are like pickup trucks IMO. When the hybrid version of the CC came up, I got very interested in it and got on the list. Both the Prius Prime and CCH came in on the same day to different dealers, and I chose the SUV. Turns out the CCH is about the same size as the 2017 RAV4, but is still considered small. And do not listen to people who say it's "not fun to drive" or boring in some subjective way. This is a great car! It is agile, peppy, smooth-riding, fun to drive -- and very safe. The interior is fine. No ghosts of the Toyota Corolla here, except for the reliability. My only beef is that (1) navigation without using your phone is $15 a month, and (2) the wireless charger does not seem to work with any phones I have tested it on. Cheers.

2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
It is fun to drive and had lots of options. Comfy for a longer trip, if you can get all your stuff in. I get about 38 mpg on the freeway where 75 mph is the speed limit. I get 42 ish in town. So that is less than I expected. It is not intuitive to use the radio, or climate controls. But easy to play my downloaded audiobooks and use my Spotify account . Worst part- no spare tire, not even … the baby one. We had a leak on the freeway, stopped and used their goop to try to fill the hole... That didn't work, so I called my dealer and somehow I had AAA get me towed to buy a new tire. The tire shop told me to NEVER USE THAT GOOP, YOU CAN'T PATCH A TIRE THAT HAD THAT STUFF IN IT. Now what??? Come on Toyota!! Get a clue and put a spare in it?!
