Used 2002 Toyota Camry Consumer Reviews
camry from 9/12/01
mine is japanese.seem to have less rattles than others.reliable except for a tracking problem on the highway especially in a cross wind;still working on this with the dealer. posible the cheap potenzas are at fault; they're also noisy and wear poorly.
LOVE MY TOYOTA

- LE SedanMSRP: N/A50 mi away
Like a Rock
Love it so far; very quiet and comfortable ride, and I have no doubt it will be reliable given my past experience with Toyotas.
Good, reliable car, but some annoyances
Overall, very happy with the car. I am impressed with power and speed. Handling at higher speeds is ok (not as good as European cars like the Passat). I really like the interior - very roomy and comfortable. The engine is very quiet. The trunk is huge, and rear seats totally fold down, so I can put anything I want to in this car. Lots of minor complaints. I experience squeaking and occasionally rattling noises. Visibility out the back is not great - big blind spots caused by frame and rear spoiler. I have also experienced sudden jerking at 40-50 MPH from the automatic transmission when you let off the gas (I noticed this in someone else's review as well).
camry SE 2002
Sofar, it's a good car compared to the Honda's Accord. Bigger and more comfortable. SE is much better than LE & XLE. Only dissappointed about the JBL speaker. The sound is not solid enough.
Not that Camry any more
I have a 2002 Camry LE, 4 cyl, bought May 2002. After several months driving, I have to say that this car, although still called the same name, does not deserve the same good words people used to have. The acceloration is always abrupt and make the ride very uncomfortable during stop-and-go driving. The transmission was truely retarded, does not know when to shift and what gear it should select under different road conditions. Also the squeaking sound from the brakes always drove me crazy. My next car is not going to a Camry for sure.
It is my mistress
I love my Camry so much that my wife considers her the other woman. She is washed weekly and fully detailed monthly. I drive her everyday everywhere and she is extremely reliable. The only drawback is that she is a summer car. In the winter her high performance tires need to be changed when ever there is call for snow and my original equipment Bridgestones only gave me a good 23000 miles. (I am a very aggressive driver)
What a value
I just traded in my 1999 XLE for the 2002 XLE, but this tiem upgraded to the V6. I ahve to say that the 2002 is night and day from the 1999. While the 1999 XLE is a great car, the redesign of the 2002 and the added features are tremendous. I actually paid less for this one than my 1999. I am very excited about having this auto.
Toyota is Tops
It is hard to imagine that this car is priced so low and is every bit as great as a Lexus at thousands more. No car could possible compare with this in this price range. I drove them all and their is absolutely no comparison.
Stepping up from 2001 Camry
I bought the SE version with the new 4 cyl. Thought about the V6 but couldn't see paying $2500 since the 4 pulls strong, much stronger than the 2001 4cyl I had. The ride, due to the SE suspension tweaks, is a bit jouncy but not irritatingly so. I have not had a chance to drive it to the Oregon coast yet to see how it handles. The JBL sound system is excellent. Overall, the car is a huge improvement over 2001- -more room, more power, more comfort. Still not a head-turner, though...
Did not know Camry was that good!
I test drove the VW Passat 1.8T, Subaru Legacy L, and the Toyota Camry. After test driving the Subie and the Passat, I had my mind set on the Passat, but I decided to try a few more cars and when I drove the Camry I knew I wanted this car. I am going to test drive the Hyundai Sonata, but I just have a feeling it is not going to compare to the Camry. The car was roomy and the car produced little noise unlike the VW 1.8T. When I was test driving the VW you could here and feel the turbo kick in, but the Camry was nice and smooth. There was not many switches and knobs to make someone confused unlike the VW.
What a poor car!
2002 Camry SE V6 has a good exterior, lots of power & acceleration and a reasonable price, but.. From the begining it's had a front end vibration that has not been diagnosed. There is a clunking in the transmission and the car will not accelerate when the engine is cold. There's no response from the engine or the car starts then stops then starts, etc. on acceleration. Throttle housing has a defect & I must run it 15 minutes in park when it's cold to get it to move. Throttle response gets worse worse as the car ages. Zero traction in wet or snowy weather. Steering is "wobbly". The power seat no longer adjusts properly.
WOW!
This is my first Toyota product. I love this car. I have test driven the Altima, Accord, and felt they were worthy cars but one test drive in my Camry and I was sold. This car is the best. I love the styling, I love the ride quality. True it's no sports car but, who's looking for an exciting sports-like ride in a family car. If you are buy a Maxima but, if you want solid dependability, a smooth care free ride. There is none better than the Camry.
???????????
This is the best car I have ever owned it is so awsome ours is top notch it is an XLE V6 and I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love my Camry
I am very pleased with my 2002 Camry SE. I purchased it new, and the styling still looks fresh. I have had absolutely zero problems with this car. It is still perfect and drives like new. Although it only has a 4 cyl engine, the pick up is excellent. Friends have commented that it feels like a V6 in power. This is the longest that I've ever kept a car! (almost 5 years)
title 1
great car but needs more hp even though it performs better thaN THE INDICATED HP RATING
My SEV6
I have not been disappointed with anything. This car has plenty of torgue for the "get up and go" not just who has the most horses. The transmission shifted smoothly in all conditions. I could not agree more about the 16" tires in the snow! I had to buy a set of "ContiExtremeContact" all season tires instead of the 3 season stock tires at Tirerack.com. The Accord V6 has wider and lower profile 17" tires which means that they will be cost a lot of $$ to replace them. I also liked my factory spoiler that wasn't an add on so you didn't see that stupid brake light in the back of the window. The car came fully loaded with everything.
2002 Camry V6 XLE
This car is both comfortable and reliable. I didn't see any car less than $30k that was anywhere close.
Makes Me Feel Smart
While not the fanciest car I've owned, it may be the smartest one. Does everything I need, looks good, is fun to challenge on a winding road.
Solid sedan
This car is a very good value for a family sedan. Quiet ride, comfortable front and back seats, Great look. Don't afraid to step on the gas It goes! Do not know anyone who complains.
Excellent ugly car
This is a great car for its class, except that for some reason, Toyota decided to ugly it up some. It looks like a whale made out of Jello. A friend actually bought one (not me), but I think I'm going to get a used '01 Camry. Obviously, the assorted sqeaks, rattles, and vibes that some people are getting are due to the new body design (and doors, trunk, hood, etc.) not having been widely tested yet. The inside will be as quiet as a mouse next year. : )
So Unhappy
I have had my new 2002 Camry for less than two years. The right dash has squeaked and creaked since day 1. My air conditioning had to be replaced. My radiator (!!) had to be replaced. My oil pan had to be replaced. My charcoal cannister had to be replaced. I have never - EVER - had such a terrible experience with a car. I just purchased a Subaru Forester, and will stick with Subarus from now on.
Solid Car
2002 Toyota Camry! To me that means reliability. The car has a lot of power for a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder. It performs nice with the exception on very loose steering. Uneven pavement will cause the car to pull easily although the alignment is right on. .
Four-time Toyota Owner
I love my 2002 Camry. I have had three Camry's and one Corolla and have enjoyed them all. Next time I will get the V6.
Best Selling Vehicle AND NOW I KNOW WHY!
Roomy (bigger than the Altima I was considering) with lots of standard features.
Great Car
Bought new and so far no major repairs. Brake problems when new but they replaced the master cylinder. Regular oil changes with synth., change transmission fluid every 30 K (what's in the pan). Otherwise, spark plugs once, and front pads at 114K.
Rattles
Awful dashboard rattles that the dealers have been unable to repair. Everything else is great bu this one issue would keep me from getting another one.
owner
replaced seat frame rear strut under warranty.body too thin
owned many Camry's
I have ewned several Camry's and this is the most responsive one yet. You give up a little ride Quality but gain alot in handling. Feels very sporty in the turns and has great acceleration for a four cylinder. With spoiler and gold package this is a classy looking car.
Excellent value for the price
This is an excellent car for the price. I drive both freeway and city miles and find the fuel economy excellent--at least 25 miles per gallon.
the best family sedan on the market
are you looking for a dependable, yet fun to drive car, well here it is, the new toyota camry. the ride is nice and smooth, quiet interior, and comfortabe seats. also it has a lot of value for your dollar. power driver seats are now standard on le and se models, and on the honda accord, its only standard on the ex, which is more money. the other features are power windows, mirrors, locks, cd player, and much more to list here.
Close to perfection
I considered Toyota Camry for the reliability. The concerns about bland styling left me when I saw one and said "Is this really a Camry?" It looked so darn good. From the numbers, the Camry's solid. I've owned it for a while and love the luxurious feel. The car is quiet beyond belief and the smooth ride is wonderful. Breaking is good. The XLE offers more features than I can count. My 4 cyl version is suprisingly powerful. My boss drove it she said, "So you got the 6 cyl huh?" She was shocked to learn it was a 4 cyl. Overall this car rocks ! Who says that this vehicle is for the over 40 crowd. I am in my 20's and am prowd to own it. I am liking this car more each day I drive it.
Camry's are the best
This car is really nice to drive and really reliable.
Buyer Beware
Beware of the "performance tires". They are not all season or snow tires. The tires do not perform well when the roads are just wet. My first set of tires only lasted to 14,000 miles. Major thread wear down the center of all 4 tires. The tire mfg,Toyo, replaced all but 1 tire. I called Toyota in CA. who basically told me that no, the tires weren't designed for snow and ice conditions and if they had to replace every part they ever received a complaint about they would be out of business! Toyota's customer service motto should read, "Buyer Beware"
An almost perfect sedan
This is a great car with only a couple of minor flaws, most notably the unimpressive front seats. Definitly not as good as a Passat or Accord. The interior style is rather pedestrian especially when compared with the Passat. Having said that, I much prefer driving this car vs my Passat. It has a superbly refined transmission and engine, is very quiet and has a ride that makes you think you are in a luxury sedan. Much quieter than the Passat. Compared with my mom's BMW 528 the ride is as good on the highway but not as thrilling on two lane highways. But at less than half the price it is a much better value!!
Great Car for the money
I got the car in late April and so far no problems. I love the build quality and the redesign of the Camry. The trunk is big for a sedan in its class. The car was a good value for me(around $22000)with the curtain air bags, the cargo/carpet mats as the only options.
i love my car
i have put 34k miles on my car this year and i still love it. I really wish i bought the v6
Smooth As Silk!
Very impressed with this car. For $21K, it's an excellent value. The new 4- cylinder engine and auto tranny are tremendously smooth and responsive. This car drives and handles like a much heavier car. Interior ergonomics are wonderfully efficient and the interior and exterior design are very attractive. Highly recommend this car.
Wonderful
Great drive, easy to handle, wonderful experience. Found it to be a more solid drive than the Honda Accord. I have found that it can get knocked around in elevated winds.
Most cost-effective and reliable sedan
At first, I looked for 2003 Toyota Corolla, new popular model, new design. At dealer, I found out why don't I try test drive for Camry as well. And I'm so glad I did. This 2002 Camry is so spacious. Bigger than previous model that I used. Passenger room is very quiet, no outside noise, turning the car is very stable even at 40-50MPH. The bigger car also didn't make it more clumsy. The powerful 2.4 L engine really helps when you need to speed up and you still get same excellent gas mileage as prior model. More important, Price is even less than new launched prior model 2 years ago. I think 2002 Camry will return to No.1 best selling car of the year again.
18 months no problems
Bought in spring 02, and after 18 months no issues. Runs smooth, quiet, 2.4L has plenty of power and good economy. Have taken many long trips and very pleasant driving with family of four--two teenagers.
Toyota SE V6
Classy and fun to drive, Large car feeling. Feel safe while driving.
My Favorite Car
I love my car. It is perfect and dependable. Very comfortable. I couldn't ask for a better car.
Satisfied
Enjoy driving my Camry around town and on the highway. Bought the car new in 2002 and purchased the extra warranty which I have not had to use. Like the electric seats and lumbar support which can be adjusted during long trips. Gas mileage corresponds to suggested average 25/30. Replaced the tires with 80,000 mile warrantied so I'm set to drive for 100,000 miles.
I'll tell them to keep it, honestly...
The brake pedal rattles when I depress it and also makes a noise. They told me this is normal and I have to live with it. I will take the car back and let them live with it. Also the dash rattles. The rear panel rattles and the plastic siding by the left passenger foot came off already. The right rear door stick and the trunk barely opens with the remote. I am soooo dissapointed. It's actually a 2003 LE but they did not have this option here yet. I hate thinking of paying for this piece of... for 5 years.
Renumber the speedometer, please
The car's ride is remarkably smooth and quiet on a variety of road surfaces, but perhaps a bit too soft. It is very easy to speed in this car without realizing it. Better use the cruise control on the highway! Steering could be a bit tighter though. The 4 cylinder is quite peppy and I have not regretted buying it instead of the V-6. Gas mileage is excellent for this size car. Transmission shifts are very very smooth.
this 4 cyl rocks!!
I first drove all kinds of cars includig, honda accord, altima, taurus, and none compares to my 2002 camry. It drives so smooth, its very quite inside the car. The altima is faster but i chose the camry, even though im 23 and love speed. Dont pay any attention to people who talk bad about this car. They probably havent even driven one.
We love our Camry!
They really have made a very good car better for 2002.
02 Camry LE
I love my car. It has a good body style, interior is simple, good build quality. It seems to have plenty of power for a 4 cylinder, and will run right beside a V6. Toyota seems to have hit the jackpot. Another good thing is that a new body style won't appear until the 2007 model year.
Definition of reliability
Comfort in the Camry rates like a full size car. The performance of the 4 cyl. was so good, I argued with the saleman that the car had a 6 cyl. The Camry sets higher than other cars in it's class making traffic driving easier and more relaxing. My disappointments in the Camry are the fuel economy and the handling. The Camry should get a little better gas mileage and the handling is a little sluggish and unbalanced. This can be corrected with the 16" wheels instead of the 15's. Fuel economy is checked EVERY fill up ranging from 23.8 to 27.9 MPG, falling short of the advertised MPG. Overall, I have been much happier with the Camry than I expected, after being a devoted Honda Accord owner.
