Watch out for leather interior

We bought a new 2016 4Runner Limited in January. The vehicle looks great is fairly comfortable and handles well. Our biggest complaints are: 1. The navigation system seems unnecessarily complicated. Nothing is intuitive when trying to use it. 2. The tan leather interior picks up dye from your clothing immediately. We owned a 2007 Sequoia previously with tan leather and had virtually no staining with it. In the 4Runner, within two weeks there was already a dark blue patch on the drivers seat. Toyota definitely failed on the leather selected. 2a. October 2018 - Sat leather is still a problem and getting worse! Added Oct 2016. After 10 months of owning the car: 3. The noise level is high in the 4runner when driving. 4. Related to #3 and something I saw in my Ford Explorer, the window glass is thinner than seen on cars in past years. Not only is noise a problem but windshield breakage is a problem. 5. Stereo system is a disappointment. Impossible to get any type of surround sound effect in the front seat. Only the front speakers can be heard. October 2019 4Runner is almost 4 years old with 55,000 miles. Car has been very reliable with no problems minor or major. The leather interior is still a problem with our dealership offering no solution. The road noise and entertainment issues are still there. Additionally, we find the navigation system to be lacking, with it unable to find addresses occasionally.

Legendary Toyota 4Runner - Love It

2016 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium 4dr SUV 4WD (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

We had a 2001 Nissan Xterra with 225,000 miles on it; loved that truck and it would go anywhere, but we wanted more space and more engine power. So we decided on the 2016 4Runner Premium 4WD in Super White. The only upgrades were TRD Pro black wheels, Nitto Grappler G2 tires, a TRD Pro front skid plate, and tint on the front windows. We've put just over 10K on it the last several months, took it on vacation through the Rocky Mountain National Park, through snow, rain, ice, highway, city, and it has performed flawlessly. It's solid as a tank, doesn't miss a beat over bumps, potholes, and is extremely surefooted in all conditions. Reviews of the truck have said the ride is choppy and rough, but I would have to disagree; the 4Runner suspension is well balanced for both on and off road, floating over bumps, speed humps, etc. with ease. Given the fact it's built on a rugged truck frame, the ride is very nice. There is plenty of engine power; if you really want to go, just punch it, and it will take off; gas mileage is average for a large SUV; I average 17 mpg with a Yakima bike rack on top. Interior is very comfortable, Softex (Toyota leatherette) seats are comfortable on long trips, controls are simple and easy to use. It has several power ports including a 120V outlet in the back of the cargo area which is very nice when you need to charge camera batteries, run a small air compressor, etc. When the back seats are folded down, there is enough room to sleep in the truck comfortably and tons of room for gear. I smile every time I walk out to this truck in the morning and look at that front end; it's so cool and progressive looking. This truck turns heads wherever we go, especially in the mountains where its a beast. If you're looking for a built-to-work, sweet looking, bulletproof vehicle that will take you anywhwere, anytime, in any weather, and keep you comfortable, along with lots of gear, kids, pets, or whatever, this is the right choice. Update: We now have 24000 miles on this 4runner. Been to Colorado a couple more times. The truck feels like an old friend and hasn't skipped a beat. Been on moderate off road trails and it just keeps going like a mountain goat and it goes thru storms unphased. Haven't added anything to the truck other than center console neoprene cover to add a little padding and protect it. Everyone that sees this truck loves it. Toyota nailed it on this one and stayed true to their real SUV roots. Update: Have 38,000 miles on the truck now; no issues. Just oil changes and rotate the tires. Been through a few snowstorms and an ice storm, and the 4Runner with the Nitto tires went through it with ease. This truck is so solid, consistent and dependable. Update: Have 50,000 miles on the truck now; no issues. Oil change, air filters, and rotate the tires. Not a squeak or rattle anywhere; we've been Honda owners for 25 years, but this truck is easily the most solid vehicle I have owned. Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires are awesome and wearing well; should get another 10K out of them easily Update: Have 80,000 miles now. Still no issues. Replaced diff and tranny fluids, new General Grabber ATX tires which are awesome. Will need brake pads soon but 80k with oem pads is incredible. No rattles; drives like new. Update at 115,000 miles. No issues at over 100K; incredible. Fluids, filters, tires, and brakes are all I've had to do. This truck is a beast. Update 125,000 miles. Changed the spark plugs and tranny fluid. Had a snowstorm a few days ago and the 4Runner went through it without issue; it's so fun to drive in the snow because it can't be stopped! This truck is so good. Update at 150,000 miles. No issues with truck. Put new brake pads on front and rear yesterday. Will change tranny fluid this week or next. If you keep up on basic maintenance this truck is flawless. Update 175,000 miles - still runs like new. Keeping up with fluid and filter changes. Glad I have a 5th Gen; just don't think the 6th Gen is going to go the long haul and the price is insane; I paid $37K for mine new. I don't understand Toyota's current direction.

Best model available in 45 years of driving SUV's

Love It. Second one now. 1st one was great, as is this one so far. Just wish they would offer a no carpet rubber mat option or at least easily removable carpets for those of us who use it as a SUV rather the soccer mom driving their kids to town and never getting off pavement. Get a Highlander or mini van! Owned various American corporations SUV's and trucks until got tired of sitting in the garage waiting on them to fix whatever broke next, still under warranty! I used the term Am. Corps rather than American SUV's as many are made out of this country and those assembled in the country often have mostly foreign parts, so....The issues were often recurring ones, and warranties end, so guess who pays then. Repairs seemed to start @ $500 and go way up from there! Haven't had one issue since making the switch to Toyota and Honda, 15 vehicles back. Not one other than the gas pedal recall when someone was looking to make a fast buck due to their ignorance! 5 minute fix, done at normal service appointment. My wife and I EACH drive around 35,000-40,000 a year, mostly for work, so we don't have time to be sitting at the dealership waiting for them to patch issues resulting from shoddy design failures and/or poor workmanship. Come trade in time, the Toyota's and Honda's have consistently cost us $4,000 to $6,000 less in depreciation! They hold their value if taken care of! I imagine that is a result of the dependability vs. the American crap we used to drive. My only complaint with the Toyota's and Honda's I have owned is that the tires that come with the base vehicles are junk. Now, I make them take the tires off immediately and put on Michelin's. Secondly is the paint. Total junk. Scratches with weeds and even fingernails at the door handle! GM used Dupont paints and clear coats, and there is a world of difference. I would rate the 4 Runners, Highlanders, and Pilots 10/10 if it weren't for those two glaring deficiencies. While not perfect, they are the best out there, we and 12 of our family members have found. While this one is relatively new, my wife and I have driven slightly over 1 Million miles in Honda's and Toyotas.

Great New Truck

If you are looking for an SUV on a car chassis with a soft ride that will be driven exclusively on the road, this not a vehicle for you. If you are looking for a truck that will take you into fields and ditches AND give you a much better ride and performance on paved surfaces than your traditional pick-up, this is the one. I finally parted with my Tacoma of 10 years last March and my 4Runner has been a great step up. With 5000 lbs towing capacity, good ground clearance and great break angles, this truck has been very "well-mannered", meaning it has done everything asked of it without a problem. The third rear seat has been great for my grandsons and the interior capacity has met every need we have needed - which can be alot! Gas mileage is not great, but a large capacity gas tank (compared to my Tacoma) helps and it is certainly better than my neighbor's full-size Ford F150. This is solid vehicle that will easily take you places other SUV's wont dare venture. Love the new truck. So I have now owned this truck for 2 years and have 25K miles on it. It continues to perform as mentioned above and has proven itself to be fabulous in heavy snow, ice and bad weather. I have taken it down gravel roads that turned into mud like a chocolate mousse up to the axels and gone right through it without any fuss. My black truck looked like it was a medium brown and the car wash guys were impressed. Still love the truck.

Fun, reliable, comfortable true 4WD

Smooth, comfortable, quiet ride on good roads and Interstates, feel the bumps on poor roads -- which does not bother us. Excellent in snow and mud. Also, the 4Runner has 10 year record as a bombproof reliable vehicle. Both are important in the high desert southwest.
