The A6 is Audi's midsize luxury sedan, making it a step up from the smaller A4 and A5 models but a slot below the larger A7. The 2024 Audi S6 is the sportier version of the A6, with more power and sharper handling. The Audi A6 makes between 261 horsepower and 335 horsepower, which is more than enough for most drivers. For the few who are seeking a noticeable jump in performance, the S6 increases output to 444 hp and adds a sport-tuned adaptive suspension, sticky summer tires and several other enhancements. This athleticism doesn't come at the expense of comfort, thankfully, as the S6 delivers a smooth ride, a quiet cabin, and all of the expected luxury accoutrements. Overall, it's just as scintillating as it is stately.

We drove the 2024 Audi S6 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.

Performance

How does the S6 drive? The S6 isn't as quick as we expected. Its 4.6-second run to 60 mph is slower than the last S6 we tested and is just 0.1 second quicker than the current non-performance-oriented Mercedes-Benz E 450. Braking performance isn't particularly noteworthy either. The S6 needed 113 feet to stop from 60 mph, while the Mercedes E 450 did it in 111 feet. The brake pedal itself is nice and firm, with a good feel as you push harder; they just don't bite quite as hard as the brakes on a sport sedan in this class could. The steering feel is light and relatively precise, but we'd appreciate a bit more feedback in the steering to get a better idea of what the front tires are doing.

The best part of the S6 isn't its track performance but the way it handles itself on the road. It will happily sneak past the speed limit and stay there without complaint, and that gives it a sleeper quality Audi has always done well.

Comfort

How comfortable is the S6? Though the S6 is more performance-oriented than the standard A6, comfort is this sedan's real strength. It's quiet, well-behaved over every kind of pavement, and allows no errant noises or rattles into the cabin at any time. The suspension soaks up road imperfections beautifully, but the car is well damped enough and never gets floaty.

The seats in the S6 we tested are a particular highlight. Audi's sport buckets are the ones to have — the sides are bolstered properly without being uncomfortable, and there is a manual under-thigh support adjuster. They're also covered in soft diamond-stitched leather and are a joy to sit in, even for hours at a time.

Our only complaint when it comes to comfort is that the climate system fans are too weak. It was very hot during some of the days we evaluated the S6, and not once did we feel the AC was strong enough to cool us down properly.

Interior

How’s the interior? The S6's interior is aging well but it is one of the oldest interiors in the segment. The highs are that it's roomy and offers excellent visibility and the driving position can be tailored to suit a wide variety of drivers.

The lows come down to the user interface. All controls are split between two similarly sized touchscreens, even the climate control. We much prefer having physical controls to the climate system, but the dedicated screen for the climate does at least provide haptic feedback. The S6 is lower than the average luxury sedan, and though the doors are large, some might find it difficult to get in and out of — even if the air suspension pops the car up during entry and exit.

How’s the tech? Audi's in-car tech features all the bells and whistles you might expect from a modern luxury automobile, though many of the higher-end features are optional rather than standard. When equipped, the systems work well, though the interface takes a little while to figure out.

The Bang & Olufsen audio system, which is typically fantastic, was a bit of a letdown this time. The bass never felt deep enough and it rattled the door pockets in a way a car this expensive should never do. Thankfully, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it easy to play music from your phone. Our test car had four USB-C ports too, and the S6's wireless charging pad doubles as a signal booster.

The driver aids work well, with no false readings or needless corrections. The adaptive cruise control maintained a close but reasonable gap in traffic.

Storage

How’s the storage? Storage is one of the S6's weakest points. The 13.7 cubic feet of trunk space is near the bottom of the class numerically. In actual use, you'll find the space is wide and deep enough to handle most daily errands. You can fold down the rear seats to help facilitate loading of long cargo items. A low liftover height means heavy items require less effort too.

In terms of interior storage, there doesn't seem to be any good place to put a pair of sunglasses that doesn't block a cupholder. The shallow center console is mostly taken up by the wireless charging spot. The rear offers plenty of space for child seats, with easy-to-access anchors on the outboard seats.

Is the S6 a good value? As you'd expect, the S6 is not an inexpensive proposition. But everything about the S6 suggests sophisticated luxury. The interior design is clean, modern and unfussy. Even the piano black plastic trim, which is typically something we don't like, doesn't look cheap or plasticky. Fit and finish is excellent, and the S6 feels every bit as good as or better than a BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Warranty coverage is standard, but while Audi provides four years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance, it does not offer free maintenance like some of its competitors.

2020 Audi S6 Premium Plus 4dr Sedan AWD (2.9L 6cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)

Just got my S6 2 days ago. I've had a lot of cars, but this is my first Audi. This car is a blast to drive. Very fast, sharp handling, but comfortable ride. Quality seems impeccable. Electronic interface is superb, interior is gorgeous, and exterior is also beautiful. Perfect car for me.
