Our leased 2000 Subaru GT Ltd has been a brake and tire eater from the day it was driven off the lot. Couple an unforgiving lease contract supported by bad service and it's a recipe for a big consumer cost. We went through three sets of brakes and two sets of tires in <24,000 miles before our local reliable mechanic told us a front CV joint was about to fall apart.

I LOVE THIS CAR. I have put over 80,000 miles on my Outback in 2 years. I bought it because I backpack, bike, and haul my dogs around..Plus, I wanted a car that was going to last me more than 200,000 miles. I've been to CO, TN, MO, and IN, in rain, snow, ice, and am completely satisfied with this car's ability to handle it all.

bought this car over 2 years ago with 120,000 miles on it and already put over 70,000 miles in that time. Have had to replace both front cv axles and tie rods, and 1 bearing. So far I've been able to do all the work myself so in material I have only put $250.00 in it. Its been a very hard working car. The AWD is amazing and the flat 4 is very peppy. I get 25 to 29 mpg and I have driven it from northern virginia to southern florida and back with not 1 problem. I hope the car runs another 100,000 and I would buy another.

at 6 years and 114K miles headgaskets failed despite the special sealant/conditioner that Subaru applied to the coolant. Had to replace them and the engine that warped due to overheating (the thermometer never showed signs of overheating). Then, the catalytic converter needed to be replaced, and a whole bunch of other expensive parts. For the money I spent on this car in the last 7 years I could have purchased a new car! The tranny is starting to go - won't shift into D (at 150K m). Since I already put so much money into it, I can't part with it, but it just keeps failing... Very unreliable. I do all scheduled maintenance on time. The only good thing about it is the wagon size - gigantic

This car handles amazingly in all types of weather. The AWD is amazing and the styling is unbelievable. Nobody can believe this car is a Subaru. BUT!! The reliability is horrible. I have gone through 2 head gaskets, numerous repairs, and now at 107,000 miles i need a new transmission. After paying $10,000 for maintnence since day one, we have kept the car running but something always goes wrong. DON"T BUY A LEGACY!

Bought 2 years ago with 120K miles (!); changed timing belt and alternator, burned later with upgraded 300W sound system. Both front CV Joints replaced after towing 2500lb trailer at 80MPH. Spark plugs and wires replaced, had a engine hesitation problem with old ones. Other than that runs and runs!

We bought this for our high school student to drive. We feel happy that she's in a relatively safe (but maneuverable) car, and she enjoys driving it. (We were looking for underpowered with ABS brakes -- AWD was a bonus -- much appreciated those nights when she drives on rain-slick roads.) It's nearly 10 years old, but does not look it. It probably isn't easy to make a teen smile with a 10- year-old car, but this one does. One note: SUPER IMPORTANT to get the engine treatments. This one had up-to- date engine treatments and Subaru USA was able to tell us when next is due.

I owned a 94 Legacy that I loved and ran to 200 K miles. This has been a disappointment. The Tranny failed at about 70 K and is failing again. Every winter the engine smells like gas as the metal fuel rail contracts. The head gasket is seeping oil.

The gearing makes the 165 hp legacy GT feel quick and responsive. It's definitely lower geared which makes it accelerate aggressively but also results in the engine running at higher RPM at speed, e.g. 3750 rpm @ 80 mph. It could use a 6 speed transmission. Even at that speed/rpm the interior is quiet and the ride is smooth. The car handles beautifully and easily outcorners everything else in its price range. Overall the car feels very sporty and is a fun vehicle to drive.

Overall a solid car, both inside and out. The exterior finish of car is outstanding, while the interior is above average. The simplicity of using the controls in the car suggests a well designed layout. The lumbar seat for the driver is wonderful for long trips. The AWD was one of the main selling points for this car. The AWD is rock solid, and cars like the VW passat, Audi A4 and Volvo charge $1000.00's when comparing with Legacy GT.

Radiator gave out (after only 75,000 miles). Although I pulled over right away, the result was cracked heads, rings, etc...they won't know the extent of the damage until they start working on it, but at minimum the repair s more than the car is worth. Subaru's service after the sale is pathetic. In my experience, the service department has bordered on incompetent. In this latest case, the dealer offered to "take the car off my hands" for nothing, so long as I bought another car off him. So their solution was to sell me another car without consideration for the fact that the other car they sold me died after only 75,000 miles. Thanks for nothing.

2000 Subaru Legacy L Wagon 5-speed

Bought this car at 86k and 9 years later it has 190k+. I love how it drives - especially the pickup! I can way outrun anyone on acceleration. I rented a brand new Toyota Camry and HATED its lack of power! It was a dog and I couldn't wait to get my Ruby Sue back! The size of the car is PERFECT; could go camping with two kids and all our stuff, and get all my groceries/chicken feed and other supplies all at once; have moved kids in and out of college with Ruby. The car always starts, even in -25 weather. The only time it didn't start was when the battery died due to age and cold weather. BAD THINGS: LOW CLEARANCE! Burned through a clutch trying to get through snow! A 4WD Subaru that is that low to the ground is asinine! Controls on dash are TINY and cannot be operated wearing gloves. The hazard light knob is NOT LIT and you need a light on to find it! Getting into reverse (5 speed) can sometimes take maybe 4 tries. When it won't go in, you have to go through the gears to get it to go into reverse. The headlights are ABYSSMAL! Very dull and poor, covered with haze. The rubber door seals stick in frigid weather, and rip out. The tail gate latch doesn't work in cold weather (won't latch) and neither does the trip meter (in cold weather). THE CIGARET LIGHTER does NOT TAKE ANY PLUG-INS! It's a dedicated, always lit, cigarette lighter!! Here's a huge gripe: My '86 Subaru Standard Hatchback (bottom of the line!) had wonderful climate control: You could have the vent on (cool air on top) while your heat was on for the feet! This one has BARELY ANY HEAT TO THE FLOOR - but it comes through the center vents ("face") ALL THE TIME with the heat on. Dealer says, "It's working!" And "vent" or "cold" air (not A/C) is always HEATED ENGINE AIR! I hate that! Oh, also, I know the car is old but the driver's window sticks. Sometimes I have to have the car shut off for the window to go up. Even with all this, I want another Subaru. Hopefully they've fixed some of these stupid designs!

Bought For $300, obviously has problems

Kalvin Knox, 09/09/2017

I bought mine for $300. When bought it had 305000 miles. The throttle position sensor had gone bad, making the transmission shift with the smoothness of a jackhammer. I replaced it for $120, and it worked perfectly afterwards. My exhaust pipe broke off at a gas station, which was embarrassing. My main problem with the car is that it has almost no horsepower and absolutely no torque. This car does not like to accelerate. At all. Also, although I suspect it has more to do with the age and mileage on the car, It gets about 5-7 MPG. However, the stereo works and sounds well, the A/C is very strong, the seats are comfortable, there is LOTS of room in the back, and even though I live in Wisconsin, the HOME of the rust bucket, It only has minor rust around the wheel wells. Also, I like the way it looks a lot. My conclusion is that if you find one with MUCH fewer miles than mine, just make sure that the Throttle Position Sensor is working right and that your exhaust pipe is on right. update- The tranny sensor was not the entire problem. Sure, it helped, but the car still refused to work right. I had to rev it up just to make it get in gear. Long story short I sold it for scrap before the tranny could blow on me. Buyer beware everyone. These Subarus are known for transmission issues.

I love the looks and practicality of my Subaru Legacy wagon. However, I have already had to have the transmission replaced ($5,000 item at 49,000 miles), head gasgets, brakes, heat shield, the moon roof leaked into the interior light. Thank goodness it is has all been on warrenty, but I bought it thinking that it would be a work horse for many years. The dealer has worked hard to make me happy--but I really don't trust the car but don't want to incur another car payment now that this is just about paid off.

Overall a wonderful vehicle in our experience. No problems whatsoever. Drives well and the AWD is great (thought slight delay with the automatic transmission). Fit and finish is nice. Seats firm and comfortable. Cupholder design is better than older Subaru models but still poor. Sound system is so-so. Interior is a bit small for my taste and driver's space is somewhat cramped. (And I'm only 5'10) That said, my wife (5'9) is perfectly happy.

If you are considering this vehicle be very wary of the stock Bridgestone Potenza tires and interior trim quality. My vehicle began suffering fron bubling and craks in the door trim and centre arm rest. Also fit and finish is well below standard for a vehicle of this price. Watch for problems with leaky sunroofs as well. I was told by the dealer that they are common due to dirt accumulating in a drain tube in the sunroof assemly. Fun to drive but not worth the money!

Great car for the price tag. Yes, it lacks some horsepower, yes it could have a little nicer interior, but for the money, this is a great car. Very nice handling, has plenty of pep for everday driving, passing, etc... Beautiful looking exterior, and the leather interior is definately top notch. I take frequent trips to northern vermont for skiing, and have not problems. Tears through snow, comfortable for lengthy drives, good sounds system, and just an overall safe car with airbags, etc...

Fun to drive every day car

The GT Limited is my 1st Subaru. I bought it new over 5 years ago, and I do not intend to get rid of it until I can't fix it any more. Several minor repairs over last year and a half--nothing major yet, but clutch is coming soon (note that it has been autocrossed hard enough to win, although only a few times). The dealership told me that the clutch/flywheel assembly they use for replacements is not the same as what came new with the car, so don't rule out that it could happen on a daily driver. This car drives wonderfully for an every day car. It handles very well in all conditions, but it is not very powerful. If you do not drive manual, look at peppier cars (6-cylinder or 2.5T Legacy?).

Dummies put UGLY advertising plate on car despite SPECIFIC instructions not to! Otherwise nice, good service. GT worth extra $ to me because of sunroof, rear LSD, power extras, upgraded sound sys. Extra bonus is better accel. due to lower final drive ratio. Gas mileage is fine (22 to 28) and car is very relaxed cruising at speed. Confidence-inspiring handling, fun to toss around in the twisties, safe as a house, good pep but could stand another 20-30 hp. Orig. equip. tires so-so, better rubber makes big difference. Also winter tires if you see snow; they turned my car from "gets me home in any conditions" to "whoo-hoo it's snowing let's play!"

Hello, we have a Legacy L wagon bought new. It is still the original clutch! 80% is city driving. Comfort is bad, but I like this car. Super great on the snow, 160 hp is plenty, just have to use the shifter. We replaced: an injector, timing belt (maintenance) relay switch for fuel pump and torsion bar that broke on a dirt road. This is an incredible reliability record. However we will not buy another one because of not so good fuel mileage. My daughter will learn to drive with this car.

Purchased to replace 1996 Legacy GT Automatic. Loved the 5 speed feel and control. The SOHC 2.5 is more responsive and easier to maintain. We have done basically nothing to the car except maintain it in 112000 miles. The only weak area seems to be maintaining wheel alignment. We have had a ball with the car. Intend to keep it another 3 years at least.

I bought this vehicle new in summer of 2000. It has proven to be a very well made and reliable car. The only glitch has been an engine knock sensor that malfunctioned at 70,000 miles and had to be replaced. This repair cost less than $125. Otherwise, I replaced the tires and performed scheduled maintenance. Feels like a sports car to drive! Goes great in snow and ice with all weather, siped tires, but this Sedan has lower ground clearance than the Outback, so 8" or more of snow can be difficult.

I still smile every time I look at this car and drive it. I have had it for almost 2 years. Looks GREAT - Very sporty without going overboard. Not the fastest car around, but definitly does the job with style. Handles like a sports car. Very solid car (heavier and stronger than the previous legacy models (switched styles in 2000). I was rear ended by a 2002 Honda Accord going 30 mph while I was at a stop light...PAINT damage. That's it folks. New bumper and paint. Police took pictures because nobody would believe them if they told them. Buy this car, you wont be sorry. I still get stopped on the street and asked what kind of car I am driving.

I bought the car for my wife. She really liked the style of the car. We just traded it in on something else. It had 146,000 miles on it. We had it a few days and the front speakers went out fixed under warranty then there was a problem with the front seat belts eats brakes like no tomorrow. Had to have the sunroof replaced because it leak into cabin and had to replace the timing belt twice. The engine is very sluggish needs a few extra hp. But I never left us beside the road and never left is stranded.

I bought this car new and it has had its problems. I like the ride and the power is good although I agree that the engine runs too fast at higher speeds. This car could use a better gearing spread or a sixth gear. Here's the list of the car's problems: bad electrical harness, replaced under warranty; leaking sunroofs replaced under warranty 2 times, broken front swaybar, not under warranty; rear sunroof shade won't move in its track, not under warranty, and I have just started to notice a steering shimmy that does not bode well.

With a 5speed and taut handling it is very fun to drive. Fuel economy is decent considering ALL FOUR WHEELS are being driven ALL THE TIME. This is what pushes Subarus to the head of the pack in Alaska, and accounts for their well-deserved ubiquity. Standard ABS (unlike Honda and Toyota), another Alaskan-friendly feature that dramatically improves stopping performance on ice. Typically unassailable Japanese reliabiliy round out the package. AWD costs $10K more from VW/Audi, plus their reliability is the pits and you have to let the tranny shift for you (on the Passat 4motion)! I think not!

Good car, better priced than some; the Legacy upgrade in 2000 was excellent...a far better car than the 1999. Better engine appreciated, as it's still a bit underpowered, but zippy enough in sedan form. Interior exponentially better; gas mileage not good at all for this size car...I've never come close to their 'estimates.' AWD works great in snow, as touted, super all-weather car...in warm climates, a different car is probably better, just for the gas mileage alone. A ruggedly handsome car, does everything well...very versatile. Legacy sedan peppier and slicker than the Forester, but you give up some cargo room.

Quite a surprise for me to first drive this Subaru. I had a couple of older, less expensive Suby's in the past. This one truly is a sports sedan that ranks with the Mazda 6, Jetta, Altima, and Accord. With the AWD feature you're one notch above these cars in bad weather. This car is very smooth without being mushy. Quiet and comfortable interior.

I purchased this car with great anticipation. This car is extremely fun to drive, looks great, and is solid on the road. Everything was great until I hit 60,000. Just after the warranty expiration, I blew a head gasket. I thought it was odd for this to happen on such a new car, but forged ahead. Then, not even a year later, I lost the number 4 cylinder. I have 80,000 miles on the car and have two major engine repairs. I have spent $1000's in good faith maintenance over the years and fear the worst going forward. I really enjoyed the car, but, sadly, I will probably never buy another Subaru and cannot consciencely recommend this car to anyone.

I bought legacy with 60,000 miles on it and it now has 90,000. It still has the original clutch. I keep outside through Pennsylvania winters and it starts up perfectly in the cold. We actually tried to sell the car back after our mechanic told us the car had been in a bad accident. We never did, and to our surprise the car has gone 30,000 more miles with absolutely no minor or major problems and is still going. The only thing wrong with the car is the cd player never worked under my ownership and we had two purchase a new pop out cup holder for $60. Overall, I am very satisfied!

how many trips I had to make to the service department. Issues during the warranty period were numerous. 2 that linger are chatter when engaging the clutch in cold weather, and softness of the brake pedal, which improves if you come of the brake and then get back on it again. The dealer claims that these flaws do not exist. Legacy does a nice job cruising through the Vermont winter. Mileage isn't bad for all wheel drive. Were reliability better, I would gladly recommend it. Unlike my old Loyale, this is no longer a car that can rack up hundreds of thousands of miles without racking up a big maintenance bill.

Great car and at a great price. I already have 55000 miles on the car and it runs better then the day I bought it. The AWD works great in snow and is very nice to have in Alaska. It does however get rather poor gas mileage I was expecting 30 miles to the gallon but it gets around 25 max. The 2.5L engine works great and gives the car an adequate amount of power.

This car is able to haul loads of stuff, has AWD, looks agressive, handles well, and is overall a fun car to drive (especially with the 5 speed). At this price point, there is not much that even comes close if those things are important to you. Audi A4 avant, BMW 325ix wagon, etc... are more $$$.

Overall excellent car!!!! But driver seat low and unable to sit upright with legs down. Caused back problems. There isn't enough room to put pillow without hitting the steering wheel.

If you are thinking about buying a Legacy GT AWD LIMITED, I will be honest in saying you would be foolish not to buy this car. This car handles better than any car I have ever owned. It rides smooth, and its just a joy to own. It is fast, but not fast enough to road race by any means. Fast enough for me though. This car is just fun, fun, fun!!!

I love my subaru! I am a student at Appalachian State University, in Boone, North Carolina. I am an avid snow skiier and the all wheel drive traction offered by Subaru goes unsurpassed amongst it's competitors.

This is my 4th Subaru, my second Legacy. I bought it used (2000 in 2002). It took me awhile to find a used Legacy as people usually keep them for several years. It looks great, handles great, and is great getting up the hills to my home in the winter, as it snows alot where I live.

I am an average driver, and this car has been full of issues. First the check engine light kept coming on, and took it in about 4 times with no luck. (can’t find a good Subaru dealer) After warranty was over a non Subaru mechanic found the threads to the knock sensor were striped, causing it to bounce around and get a false signal. Then at 35,000 miles the rear wheel bearing went out. There have been 2 recalls on it, a coolant additive was put in to help prevent issues with the bad head gasket design, and a rear suspension issues was the other. Now at 100,000 miles, the transmission is acting up. Should have bought a Chevy or a Ford, I never had issues like this with them.

Pretty sluggish vehicle, but handles well with the AWD, and will go anywhere. Have had numerous problems with the suspension and brake systems. Can’t complain about mileage (25 avg) since it is all-time AWD.
