Used 1997 Subaru Legacy Consumer Reviews
A 'Go anywhere, do everything' vehicle
Owned my 97 Outback for 6 years now. A wonderful vehicle for doing just about everything (except racing). It's comfortable, loves to cruise (happiest at 75-80), handling predicatable and the quality remains. Great for hauling big stuff, groceries, building supplies, kids, pets and even towing a small trailer. I'd give up ALL my other cars before this one. Only big problem was an alternator that suddenly died. Out of warrantee, I got it fixed, but 1 month later Subaru writes about a voluntary recall for this problem. Sent Subaru of America my bill and received reimbursement 4 months later! I'll never be without a Subaru as long as I can still drive.
'97 Legacy Outback
I always wanted an outback. I live in Cleveland and found one two hours away in Toledo. It was a 97 limited, with 78,000 mile on, and I saved over three grand on it. On the way home I blew a head gasket!! The car was bought as is, so no money from the dealer. Cost me $2,500, changed clutch, wires, and radiator while I was at it! Since then no problems and I'm planning a cross country trip. I hope they sealed it tight.
Subarus are Great Cars
This is the third Subaru wagon I've owned and I've had no trouble with any of them. I find the ride very comfortable and the car reliable. I find the new Legacy a bit pricy.
4 Door Legacy Outback Limited
I bought my stick shift Subaru in 1997. I had problems with the brakes, the alternator (changed it once), and the paint on the bottom of the car (it falls off easily). While those problems existed, I have enjoyed the interior space and the way it performs in snow.
1997 Legacy L AWD
I love this car. Bought it with 223,000 miles on it. Redid the cam seals, timing belt, fuel pump, fuel filters and put a new head on it. It now preforms as a new car only at the $3000 I paid for it and with the $1500 I spent to re work it. I feel as though I have a $10-15000 car and I expect to get 400,000 miles with it easy, with regular oil changes and belts. I rate it a 9.25 now. For $4500 find anything better. Let me know, I will take 10 of them. Hope this helps. Only fault as of now - check engine light is on due to fuel heat sensor unit is bad. Being able to do the work myself it does not bother me. I would drive to Alaska.
