I have been looking at Subaru Foresters for about two years. I loved my 2008 Honda CRV but wanted to go with an AWD. Reading reviews of small SUV's on Edmunds and getting into the cars moved me slowly toward the Forester. My search resulted in three finalists, the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-5, and 2014 Forester. All are fine choices but the Forester drove so well and with absolutely amazing visibility. Even though the frame sits up high the car has a low center of gravity and very large windows. With the exception of the high (and safe) back head rests, there is no blind spot. Lots of little details suggest great attention to detail in visible and invisible places.

I considered only the wagons I could buy with a manual transmission. Subaru had the most interior space, headroom and legroom. Mazda offers only a 2.0 liter engine, with 2.5 costing much more and only with automatic. VW? Let's just say I've owned VWs before. And AWD standard, a mechanical system with NO electronics (at least with manual transmission). Radio is decent, dash vents will ALMOST shut off, I even fit behind the wheel without moving the seat all the way back. Not the Subaru I remember (we've owned four). Gas mileage has averaged 28, better than I expected. Engine is smooth and flexible, doesn't lug at low RPMs. Ride could be better, small bumps I never noticed in other cars (even a 2009 Forester) are annoyingly stiff. Color choices weren't the best - red is very subdued, gray interior is hard to keep clean - no black interior with red?

After test driving the Rav4, CX-5 and Forester, there was no debate between my wife and I. 2 months in, we love it even more than we thought we would. Fuel efficiency is awesome, I sometimes get 36 mpg on the highway. Interior is highly functional and a great value. No its not a BMW, but for the price tag its exactly what I expected. Having gone from the VW GTI, not the same driving experience, but I do think performance is adequate. The open cabin, comfortable ride and top motch AWD make this an overall fantastic choice for people who want a mix of urban and off road testing. we've taken a few outdoor adventure trips and its been great.

Recent purchase. Will update down the road. Consider all ratings TBD and/or "for the money"

Took delievery only yesterday, but I wanted to provide an advanced review to help those that are considering a Forester. Edmund's consumer reviews were very helpful to me, so I wanted to give something back. So far: smooth/compliant ride quality, solid feel, genrally quiet with a hint of road and wind noise, CVT works very well, great visibility, excellent seats, fit and finish are nice, spacious and "open" interior, sharp styling. We have a 2013 CRV EX-L too, and I think the Forester compares favorable. I think the fit and finish of the CRV (even for lower trims) is a little better than the Forester. But the ride quality seems better on the Forester, and the visibility is much better.

This SUV has solid power train. Would rate it higher if I purchased premium or limited. The power train has little difference from the basic to touring. But extras are definitely not worth $10k. Nav is a joke. Slow response. Hard to see the screen under sun. And no steering information from the vehicle?? Use your phone instead, because that's actually a better nav system. Mpg. You get 30+ mpg only when driving at 50 mph. At 70~75 mph, you get about 24 mpg. Safety. Eyesight doesn't work well when facing sun or in the dark. So it doesn't help when the driver really needs some help. Also extremely sensitive gas pedal, and extremely insensitive brake pedal.
