Wishing now I didn't get the standard. Shifting is a hassle and it's always been kind of touchy. Thought it would get better, but after 4 years it still stalls if not babied.

bad engine, bad transmission

Check engine lights came on at 50,001 miles. Needs synthetic oil frequently, a quart every 2000 miles. There was something wrong with the transmission from the day I bought it. Complained x3 to the dealer and was told "nothing" was wrong. They admitted a problem after a few years went by and said there was a recall on something on the transmission and put a "patch" on it. It still shifts terribly. It can't get out of its own way, making it unsafe to dodge unexpected obstacles. The gas mileage was supposed to be upwards of 32 mpg according to the MSRP sheet, it gets as poor as 17 to 18 mpg and the best is 22 to 24 mpg on the highway. I also complained that I could smell exhaust, especially in the city. Dealership denied a problem x3 visits over two years. My son-in-law took it to a local muffler shop and they found two leaks, one on each side of the exhaust. Poor transmission, poor engine, and it is terrible in the snow. I had to put studded snow tires on it just to get around in the snow, the very reason I bought it, making it not very safe and expensive. Secondly, I am 5'9" and 180 lbs., the seat cushion started to collapse six months after I started driving it. The seat back is also not wide enough for my shoulders, forcing them to be rounded forward when driving. If I were shorter this would not be a problem. From years two through four, I had undiagnosed electrically problems which cost hundreds of dollars and never got fixed. I changed the battery after having to have

Bad Fuel Economy (19 MPG)

Generally OK, but bad fuel economy (average 19 MPG, mostly high way miles), manual claim 91 octane GAS, but Subaru website says 87 octane. All the instruments will be in red color during night while driving. Can not open trunk without remote. Inspection need to be handled specifically.

Buy the Turbo

The Forester is a practical, reliable, and versatile vehicle. The only problem is that it uses a 170hp engine to power a relatively large vehicle. So, if you are planning on buying one I recommend you buy the turbo charged XT. this will power you up hills with no trouble. The storage space is great, and the panoramic moon roof is incredible.
