Known Recurring Problem - Blown Head Gasket???

Wayne G., 06/11/2016

UPDATE (June 2017): Still losing oil at the same exact rate as before having the head gasket replaced. I honestly wonder whether the dealer, SUBARU OF RICHMOND, every respected the head gasket at all. Either they did not, or the car had a serious design flaw. Also, had the dealer, SUBARU OF RICHMOND, replace the front disc brakes when they they did the head gasket work. The brakes are now wobbling when braking set high speeds. UPDATE (Sept 2016): Subaru gave me a $500 coupon to help defray the cost of replacing the head gasket (the dealer, SUBARU OF RICHMOND, told me after doing tests, that I paid for, that was the reason I was losing oil). I had the head gaskets replaced (both sides), for $1,500 total. The short story is, I AM STILL LOSING OIL AT THE EXACT SAME RATE!!!! About 1 quart per month. My very first Subaru is a 2010 Subaru Forester. Overall I had been impressed with the performance of the car, however I was just recently told by Richmond Subaru that the reason I am losing oil is a blown head gasket, which will cost $2,400 to replace. After doing some research I have come to understand that this is fairly common with Subarus. Less than a year ago I replaced the timing belt and had other maintenance done that cost several thousand. I am not in the habit of spending this much money on a car in regular maintenance fees. Previously I have owned Hondas and Toyotas and have been quite happy with them (over 300K miles on an Odyssey!), but based upon reviews I thought I would give Subaru a try. I suspect this problem has been occurring for some time. I once noticed at an oil change that my oil was low. I thought this was a slip on my part in filling to the proper level previously. Now I think it was the head gasket all along, and this was at about 50k miles, possibly still under warranty. I find it silly that Subaru engineers have continued to design engines with this problem, and that Subaru dealers are unwilling to help. When I found out I had this issue, the Subaru salesman told me, "...since I know of the issue now I can't give you a full trade in value. My suggestion is that you see what CarMax is willing to give you." If Subaru cannot help with this situation I will have no choice but to abandon Subaru as a brand choice and move on.

We decided to buy a subaru forester after checking out all the major competitors - Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav4, Nissan Rogue, etc and the Forrester was the cheapest, best gas mileage, best warranty, awesome panoramic sunroof, AWD - great car at a good price The backseat is roomy and even reclines like an airplane chair! Very comfy and spacious - would recommend to anyone.

Exhaust rattle and ping noises

Subaru Forester 2010, 57K miles - the heat shields in the exhaust are losing their insulation, so the tin shields rattle against each other. Was told I would need to replace entire exhaust to fix. Not covered by extended wtty - why make an exhaust system that falls apart after 2 years, and can't be easily fixed? why is this "my problem?" It is Subaru's poor design, should be their money to fix! Has anyone else had the dealer fix this problem for you or found an easier solution? The tinny rattling noise drives me crazy!

2010 Subaru Forester XT (Turbo) Limited Edition

* Present Car: 2010 Subaru Forester XT (Turbo Charged) Limited edition; 4 Speed Automatic Transmission (Fast on pickup and powerful on torque) Premium Fuel ONLY: 15 MPG @ 20-30 MPH City (stop & go) 20-25 MPG @ 30-60 & 65-80 MPH 30-33 MPG @ 60-65 MPH; 4 cylinder Uses a Timing Belt * Prior Car: 2009 Subaru Forester X (NON-Turbo Charged) Limited edition PZEV; 4 Speed Automatic Transmission (Slow on pickup and weak on torque... dangerous on pulling out!) 15-30 MPG (Reg (best), Plus, Premium Fuels) 4 cylinder Uses a Timing Belt The "Limited" is the top end model and comes with a near-complete package of options as standard. Most of the negative reviews I've read are from non-turbo Subaru owners. I would never buy another non-turbo car OF ANY KIND again for the reasons mentioned above... no power and too slow on pickup and top end. However, if you think the pickup is ok and you want the fuel efficiency, get the X version. If you study the 0-60 second reviews on every car, you'll see that there are [presently] only 2 ways to get to 60 mph in under 7 seconds... 1) Natural Aspirated with +400 HP (Burns lots of fuel... 18-5 MPG) 2) Turbo Charged with +225 HP (Best fuel consumption... 28-15 MPG) I haven't experienced the oil burning issues others have complained about... perhaps they had the inevitable lemons. After doing a very thorough research on all SUVs, I am convinced there is no better car than Subarus (w//Turbo) you can buy for it's price. The only other SUV I'd consider is a Porshe Macan... but you pay over 4x the price. Both 2009 and 2010 Foresters handled superbly on wet, slippery roads BECAUSE OF the synchronized all wheel drive. Anybody complaining about poor handling of Subarus in inclement weather [while All Wheel Drive is engaged] needs to learn how to drive CORRECTLY. The drive train of Subarus is impeccable and the main reason I went with it... Centered/Balanced/Low Mounted Boxer Engine; Synchronized All Wheel Drive make this vehicle VERY easy to control on any surface... There is no better vehicle to drive on slippery surfaces than Subarus. Driver's Seat "Limited" version: Leather 8 way power control; Does not wear out unless you carry a THICK WALLET IN YOUR BACK POCKET! Very comfortable for 5'2"-6'5" Ht. Both front seats tilt all the way back for taking naps on long trips... Some individuals may find the arm rests in the way in this position, but still not much of a detriment. Passenger Seat: Mechanical Lever Adjustment. Rear Seats: Are comfortable enough for average height people. Rear Cargo: Rear seats fold down all the way flat (unlike many other top end SUVs), making it excellent for loading items and camping out if need be. NAV system: Screen is 6" diagonal... not large enough to view comfortably. Does not dim enough at night time making it annoying to drive while on. Boot up is too slow if turned off. There are better after market models with 7" screen (fits perfectly if the NAV-Headunit is compatible with 2008-2013 Forester models) that are much cheaper. Warning! : Do not buy any Kenwood! The 2010 Subaru Forester XT (Turbo Charged) Limited edition is the best car I've ever owned. However, it's recommended to change the Timing Belt around 100k miles ($1100). 2011-present now have a Timing Chain which doesn't need to be changed so soon. Nevertheless, there are some complaints about how they are mounted, but that is to be seen from other owner's reviews. The only other engine Subaru makes with a Timing Chain is their 3.6 Liter, 6 Cylinder Engine; But that was only put in their Outbacks.

Squeak/ Rattles Nightmare customer service

We bought a Forester 2010 for my wife based on my prior good experience with a 1995 Legacy I had. This car is full of rattles and squeaks. Took it several times to several dealers to get it fixed, the rattles are so bad that we are now stuck with this nightmare. Customer service/ company rep have been great in stone walling the resolution of our problem and making us feeling stupid as if everything is fine despite the dealers agreeing to and working on the problem (though unsuccessfully) multiple times. For one who always told my friends what a great car Subaru makes, now I am so disgusted with the brand I will never own another one.

Despite all the hypes out there, I am very disappointed with our Forester. Runs well and icy and snowy roads here in Calgary, but the customer care is mediocre to say the least, and we've had series of issues after our first maintenance. Suffice to say, we went back to the dealer for repairs other than regular maintenance at least five times in the last four years. That's a lot considering this is a brand new car. My 2003 Toyota Echo has been a much better value for us for $10K less than our Forester. We will sell ours shortly, and will not go back to Subaru again. (sorry sis... she works for Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan)

Great Car Except Emissions Control Problems

My 2010 Forester had the check engine and traction control disconnect light illuminate along with the cruise control light flashing at 79,500 miles. The car has been trouble-free up to this point. After a month of searching for fixes, I took it to DCH Subaru in Riverside, CA where they diagnosed the rear oxygen (O2) sensor voltage above the specified range (fault P2096). Subaru warranties the PZEV emission control system for 150,000 miles / 8 years. The fault O2 sensor was replaced without any cost to me.

65K Miles, Leaking Head Gaskets

Evidently this is a systemic problem with Foresters. I sure do wish Edmunds had told me that before I plunked down $25K on this car. Anywho... Now I'm stuck with a $5K repair on a car that's barely six years old with 65K miles. Never again, Subaru.

First day-blue smoke came out of the tailpipe on startup. Salesman said it should disappear after few hundred mi. After 1 wk it was in service w/ 400 mi with the same problem. Subaru service MGR said "the blue smoke is normal and part of breaking in." Service changed oil & filter for an OC test. This brand new car still blows blue smoke everyday on cold start and even if it's been sitting for few hrs. Been going to service once, twice, & even 3x/wk and service MGR keeps telling my that my car is "normal and its part of breaking in." I lose a lot of oil within a wk (1qt+) & still waiting for Subaru to do something. Service refuse to fix the car. 1st time buying new car & not happy with Subaru.

I do not own this model of Forester, however to all that have been experiencing oil leaks, it has nothing to do with your head gasket; Subaru's are notorious for the failure of their oil pump gaskets, which obviously will allow oil to leak through the gap. No car manufacturer is without their foibles and design flaws (Dodge is notorious for transmission failures (a problem that they have failed to address). Honda uses the cheapest possible components, which results in the repairs being cheap, however they are required on an all too frequent basis, etc.) The point is: check out the forums of actual owners and drivers of the vehicles before you buy, it can save you a bundle; Not to mention you can get the parts you need from Rockauto for 30% - 50% off of Autozone prices, or O'Reilly's , or Advanced Auto etc. or 70% - 90% off of the dealer cost! A friend of mine needed the catalytic converters replaced in her 2003 Ford Escape, the dealer quoted over $7000 for the replacement! 90% of the cost was the mark-up on the parts, then they tried to ease the impact by acting like the "cheap labor" was some kind of a favor! All three catalytic converters plus O2 sensors cost under $800 on Rockauto (Added note: THEY MAKE NO "NEW" PARTS FOR OLD MODELS OF VEHICLES! ALL PARTS (EVEN FROM THE DEALER) ARE AFTERMARKET! DO NOT BE FOOLED BY SLEAZY MECHANICS AND SALESPEOPLE!!) Do your repairs yourself. Youtube is full of instructional videos if your Chilton's manual doesn't cut it.

158000 miles, bought new. Replaced head gasket last year. Still burns 1 qt per 4000 mi, but doesn't drip. Heat shields have rattled at idle for 6 years. Not comfortable for big men. Still gets 26 mpg. Very reliable.

I agree with everyone about rattles. There is some issue with interior finishing that causes minor rattles. For me it's far from annoying and dealer will fix it. Will post the output after fix. For now I just pump up the music and enjoy the ride. Trust me, get a manual if you want to enjoy driving forester without sacrificing money with the XT. Cornering the vehicle and driving over rough roads is pure pleasure. Went on a 400 mile trip and I was least tired. You won't even feel the fatigue of long trips. It handles winding roads exceptionally well. Down shift to 4th and it will take up any hill incline on freeways. Hill incline assist is nice. Looking forward to winter's driving on ice.

I have had my Forester for 3 months now. I love it; didn't think I would as much as I do since I changed over from a BMW. It drives a lot like a sedan, and it's sure-footed and reliable. The customer service has been great as well. The seats are comfortable and the road visibility is good. The rear seats are even more comfortable, and the giant moonroof is awesome. I also like the sports mode and the ability to manually shift gears - very useful for me and for saving on the brakes when going downhill. And the price? What a great value.

Bought a Subaru because I thought they were supposed to last forever. Everything was fine right up until the warranty ran out at 60,000 miles. Then brakes and exhaust needed replaced. Spark plug wires needed replaced. At 80,000 miles the head gaskets were leaking oil and needed replaced - $1,800. At 130,000 miles the transmission coolant lines into the radiator were rusted out and I had to replace the radiator and lines. Spark plug wires needed replaced again. At 165,000 miles the head gaskets were leaking again along with the transmission lines again, and it needed a catalytic converter, exhaust pipes and both mufflers. Estimate of over $7,200 to repair (and that is with a couple of hundred kicked in from the dealer). Needless to say, I have a very large lawn ornament now. Won't trust Subaru again.

Rattles like a Soviet-made piece of junk

Rattled, 03/12/2010

After 6-7 months of research, I bought a new Forester 2.5X (basic). It is a compromise: will use it as a family car + getting to trail heads via back roads. After 3 weeks and 600 miles on asphalt, it started rattling at relatively low speed, like 20-40 mph. The last time I had a car rattle like this was when I was much younger - and it was a a small Soviet-made piece of junk, much different from a cute new Forester. The service department reduced the rattle but it is still there. They gave me a replacement Forester that rattled at least as loud as my own. The rattle completely spoils the joy one expects form a new car. In addition - relatively poor gas mileage in a city (we drive it gently)

We purchased our 2010 Forester in Febuarary 2010 when our daughter was born. We mainly purchased it for safety and reliability. The vehicle was fun to drive and handled well. We were disappointed that the a/c compressor went out and even after being replaced continued to make a grinding noise and would quit blowing cold off and on. Dealership never was able to fix it. Also found that the seats were uncomfortable and fit and finish were lacking. We traded it off on a toyota, which we have owned several of and never had service problems with. Would not reccomend the forester.

First one went 180,000 miles, then head gasket leaked. Decided to trade in. Did the RAV4, CR-V, Forester loop, and returned to the Forester. The dealerships were the most professional of any brand. I will take it on long dirt roads for fishing, and love the better clearance. No longer a "small" SUV! At least not on the inside. My priorities are value, reliability and gas mileage. Two out of three ain't bad, but I haven't taken long trips yet, so maybe mileage will improve. It's got a miles-per-gallon display, which is nice. Same giant moonroof. Styling is sharper, and I'm glad they didn't slope the roof any more.

It seems that any time I change speeds suddenly, my car revs up and feels like it's stalling. The first time it happened, I was on a major highway and went to pass in the left lane when suddenly the car revved really high (as if I threw it into neutral and stepped on the gas pedal) and wasn't moving! I saw a car coming up on me in my rear view mirror and thought, "that's it, I'm a goner!" Just today on my way to Subaru for the seat belt recall, as I pulled out onto the highway, the car revved to 5 and it felt like the gas pedal was stuck. When I slow down to make a turn at a corner, the car jerks when I put my foot back on the gas. 3x back to the dealer; they say that's how this trans works!

My 2010 Subaru Forrester just suddenly accelerated upon being put into reverse to back into a parking spot. If anyone had been behind me they would have been killed. My car jumped a curb, ploughed through some gnarly bushes and landed on the back end of an Audi parked in the lot behind it. My foot was not on the accelerator and the car mat was not caught on the gas pedal, 2 excuses Subaru has given when this has happened before. When the car landed on the Audi and couldn’t go anywhere it was still revving at top speed. NEVER buying another Subaru. Found out by checking online that this has happened many times before. Never addressed by Subaru. I never got in that Forester again. Now drive a Chevy Equinox and very happy with it. Edmunds just asked if I want to update my review. My update is I still will never drive another Subaru. Still love my Equinox. Updating again 2020 - Still love my Equinox, not ever buying a Subaru. 2023 still feel the same. 2023 update - Equinox still going strong. I think I am now a Chevy girl. 2024 update - No to Subaru, yes to Chevy. No complaints with my Equinox. 12/24 update - 7 years of loving my Chevy Equinox. 7 years of thanking God no one got killed in that Subaru death box. 2025- Equinox still going strong. No to Subaru. No no no.

wrote a review 8/10 after 1 mth ownership, gas smell was a mouse who had eaten the gas line! fixed-no repeats. 5/11-leaking from rear shoulder harness after a few days rain. seal on sunroof pulled loose & drain not connected. okay until this week - again leaking. two days in shop and they cannot recreate leak. my concern is about mold/mildew/rust in future. thinking about getting rid of it if dealer or Subaru won't do something. otherwise, I do love the Forester. great in snow/handles well/has improved to 22-23 MPG, mixed so not too bad. little "rough" til it warms up but after that, is quiet. seems to hold value in resale - at least at dealer.

2010 Subaru XT Premium catastrophic engine failure

I own a 2010 Subaru XT premium. The car has been great aside from the fuel consumption (in the range of 12-13 L/100k. Spacious, leather interior etc. The car has relatively low kms with a regular service history, mostly done at Subaru. The other day, it blew a con rod and the car is now classified to have catistrophic engine failure. Prior to this I had a great view on Subaru cars. I even worked there. I understand that this doesn’t happen to everyone but the fact that I am going to need a whole new engine, or at the very least a full engine reconstruction if this hasn’t damaged the cylinder casing, on a car that has only done 120,000 km with a regular service history has left a VERY, VERY bad taste in my mouth.

This car has been a major disappointment, so far I had the air conditioning go out when it was 110 degrees as a bearing in the compressor seized, than just a few weeks ago my right front axle bearing went bad. Also my rear rotors are rusted with massive grooves, my rear emergency break pads are toast so I need to get new rear breaks, rotors and new emergency breaks replaced. The car has 44K on it and is 3 and a half years old. I used to have a 97 Impreza Outback that had no problems for 13 years and 225K miles, only things wearing out like when they should have, not like this car. For all the awards this car has won its been a major disappointment.

My 2005 Forester gave it up for me and protected me when a semi ran me into a cement median going 65 mph. I walked away with only bruises from the seat belt. The 2010 Forester replacement is 3" taller and 3" longer. It is very roomy and comfortable. I personally prefer the fabric upholstery (not hot in the summer and cold in the winter), AND the front seats are heated! Even though the car is larger, the tight turning radius is still very good. I have not experienced any issues with rattles or noise. In fact, this '10 is much quieter than the '05. More than anything, my Foresters have always been excellent handling, spunky, reliable and have risen to any challenge presented.

It's a low cost crossover. I read the other reviews and it seem like people are expecting luxury grade materials. You probably should have driven past the Subaru dealership if you were looking for a German luxury ride. This car is a great value. It does everything well enough and should be pretty reliable. Not flashy, but very competent. I wanted a good mix of MPG, space, and snow handling, so it was perfect. My previous car was an Acura sports coupe, so driving a mini SUV is a little bit of a letdown in terms of handling, but that trade off comes with safety and versatility that I was lacking before. The stereo is pretty bad, but I will replace it soon enough. Also, no rattles so far

I purchased a 2010 Limited when a job caused me to relocate to Mammoth Lakes, CA. We live at 8000 feet and we got oveer 50 feet of snow. With snow tires, the Forester never let us down. Its great turning radius, relatively high ground clearance and AWD handles the snow well. But, at this elevation, with only a 4 speed automatic, it's missing a couple of cylinders. Transmission downshifts regularly on hills. And, it was a little small for my wife and me. It's great around town, but not great as a road car. This was our first Subaru and we traded it on an Outback which fits our needs. And, we traded it in for $2500 less than we paid after 18,000 miles!

Just purchased a 2010 Forester XT Prem. Still breaking it in so not driving it hard. So far, completely impressed with the handling, and comfort, and "kick". Great amount of space. Love the option to recline rear seats an extra few degrees for passengers on long trips. Purposely did not purchase the Limited because I did not need the extra bells and whistles. However, great price for the product. iPhone aux in arm rest space is wonderful. Huge moon roof. Actually looking forward to winters and hard rains. Just became a Subie die hard. Felt it did need 5 speeds for the auto shift rather than 4. I'm certain I'll still be able to smoke some other drivers with the turbo.

I've had it with Subarus

While I like the designs and feel safe in Subarus, every one of my three cars has had extensive repair problems. In the 2010 Forester it was the transmission, which started causing problems at about 110,000 miles and had to be replaced, and now it's burning a quart of oil every 1,000 miles--not unusual according to a Subaru complaint site. My former Outback blew a head gasket (to the tune of $2,000) twice before we dumped it. My first Sedan had axle problems and ruined synchronizer rings, all expensive to fix. I couldn't recommend this car unless you don't mind high repair bills.

the good - looks decent, good rear storage, lots of room for kids in back seat, decent towing capacity the bad - noisy engine, uncomfortable seats front, poor drink holders, well hidden heated seat controllers, stupid blue light over rear mirror, small controls for stereo and cruise. the ugly - the stereo is poor, but above all .... it RATTLES ! various cheap plastic components rattle under all conditions, the ceiling, the doors, the dash, the windows, the trunk, front heat deflector.

I drive a lot and when I'm in my car, I want everything to be perfect. My last car was a Lexus GS350 and I couldn't stand the rattles. I've heard some complain about rattling, however I've found that if you just tuck everything away in the back such as the center seat belt, rear cover, etc., there aren't any rattles at all. I love my Forester and I'm a Suby fan for life. Funny thing is, I used to despise Subaru. Now I think it would take a lot for another manufacturer other than a high line manufacturer to wow me like Subaru

It is great in the snow. I sold it a few weeks ago because it had too many problems and it was getting old and boring. It was good because it was nice and comfortable, it was spacious, and it was easy to drive. The head gaskets had to to get replaced before 84,000 miles. It took a battle with Subaru to get them to pay for it. All my family and friends blue head gaskets with Subarus before 100,000 miles. I sold it at 111,000 miles and went and got a Honda Civic

We got it in 2012 and we sold it a few weeks ago because it was very expensive to fix. It was a pretty small SUV. It’s fuel economy was great. But it had engine problems. It only had a 4 cylinder engine and we sold it with 111k on it so it was not a very strong engine.

Subaru 2.5x Special Edition. I bought the 2010 Forester based on safety ratings and reliable all wheel drive. It drives great in heavy rain. The interior is roomy enough for a tall 6'3" man to fit comfortably front and back. The cargo area has an outlet for a fan and fits the dog and dog bed perfectly. Like the other reviews mentioned, you hear road noise. I had my non-Subaru mechanic take it for a spin & he said it was because the engine itself is so quiet. The interior fixings aren't great, but the car was about 10k less than what most of my friends have paid for American SUVs. Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase and hope to keep the car 10- 12 years.

Should have know better as my 06 Forester rattled from the day I drove it off the lot. Within a month the 2010 Forrester passenger side door started to rattle and then the drivers side door. Dealer can't find the source. It's now to the point where I feel like I'm driving a popcorn popper. The vehicle gets good mileage, handles well, has great utility and is great in Vermont winters but the rattling takes the fun out of driving it. I'm going to start a "Share the Hate Campaign" on You Tube! I'd look at Honda or Toyota even though a little more costly than the Subaru. I contacted Subaru Corporate and their response was "Contact your dealer." No responsibility. They just build them!!

After being a Subaru owner for the last several year, I may try something different next time around. I still love the way this thing drives, but subaru must stop being slow with bringing current technologies to the customers. Absolutley terrible stereo with no Bluetooth, dedicated I pod , etc......This is the Limited afterall! also sunvisor vanity mirrors with out illumination and no light in glove box!!C'mon! The 4 speed tranny was not a huge concern for me but it again shows Subaru's unwillingness to be current. interior materials are not on par with most in the class. If Subaru wants to retain this up till now loyal customer, it must add some class to the fun!!!!

We're still under the 1000 mi. break-in so no speed records yet, but even with mild acceleration, you can feel that this little wagon has a dirty little secret that is eluded to only by the big air scoop on the hood (which really works by the way - this is no poser!). Supposedly this is a 7 sec. To 60. Not terribly fast, but nice to have in a wagon when you need it. The interior is well designed and comfortable. The engine with the turbo is noisy! You are constantly reminded that its there! Drives very well and smooth - handles good and does not feel like a cumbersome SUV. Great turning radius, which I am really beginning to appreciate. Nice stereo. Overall a very surprising car!

I'll make it simple. RATTLES,RATTLES,RATTLES. Doesn't really matter if it drives well or not. You are so distracted by all the rattles you really don't care. Rattles started in the rear of the vehicle. The dealership tried to convince me it was the license plate. Now beside the rattles in the rear of the vehicle, the front driver side and passenger side windows rattle/hum. Only person I would recommend this vehicle to is my friend who is totally deaf!

I would best describe the Forester as a "nice" automobile. It does everything well, but nothing outstanding (which is not a knock on it). It seats five, pulls a small trailer, can handle dirt roads and snow, usable large storage area, good visibility, good highway manners, etc. A very solid vehicle.

I had a 2005 Forester and the head gasket blew last year at 167,000. Bought a cheap Jeep before X- mas and decided on another Forester this year. Rides like a go-cart and and gets great gas mileage. The awd is a necessity up North. The ability to press a button and lock em in is a great improvement. This rig is easy to park and will go most anywhere in any weather. Missed my old one...glad I got this one.

I love the outside styling of this car, and you sit up very high. Handles well on country roads, good pick up on the highway, you have to watch your speed. Have to warn you, the carpet is poor quality, almost looks like it is wearing out already, and it is brand new. I don't like the "velvet" texture of the doors, this too is hard to keep clean. Not the interior for you if you have dogs or little kids, it would drive you insane.

I love the roomy interior for both front seat passengers as well as back seat passengers. I also added the following accessories: body side moldings, hood protector kit, moonroof deflector, splash guard kit, wheel moldings, luggage cover, trailer hitch, rear bumper cover, & wheel arch kit. Vehicle is sharp looking and versatile.

This was my first Subie to date and so far its not bad. Front seats could of been of better quality and comfort. The stereo to be honest is very sub-par. Favorite feature is the bullet proof AWD, and probably the main reason I choose the Forester. Rattles in both the driver and passenger side doors. Turns out to be a loose piece called a baffle that can be corrected. Overall the car is better than most.

Just got my 2010 Forester 2.5x Premium and I can say I don't hear any rattles. For the price I think that this is a great car. Yes, I agree about the plastic on the dash but it is simple and clean. At 6'4" I find the drivers sit very comfortable and plenty of room in the back seat. I like at the sport grill but I like the grill that it came with better so no need to spend money replacing it.

So I am a repeat customer of Subaru Forester's. I am still driving the Subi I am rating. It's slow off the line. It loves to go through the snow. I've put it through over 100 thousand miles. It's been in 2 accidents. I bought it with a trade in of my 2001 Forester. I should have kept the 2001 Forester. Both had issues with head gaskets and burning oil. I think that this is a crucial failure in both of these. That being said, the ride of these cars, their storage space, and their overall performance are a perfect fit for me. I am a Subaru customer for life. I know that they will need excessive maintenance overall. I am better informed on the vehicles needs having spent over 10k in repairs. They need some tlc. The winter tire I'm most impressed with on both Forester's is the Bridgestone Blizzak. Worth the extra cost and get them siped. I think that they should be handled with a soft foot given the issues with head gaskets. They do well overall in my state of Utah and they crush the snow. I am excited to get my 3rd Forester with the appropriate updates. I drove one when Nate Wade replaced my head gasket at a premium cost of 2600. I can accept high upkeep costs as long as I am expecting any of the major issues at all times.

For a 2010 model SUV, this vehicle is lacking some basic features other vehicles in its class have. Comfortable driving position is one. The driver position is awkward with all the plastic parts sticking out reaking havoc on leg pain. Blue-tooth, the horrible sound system even with the circle sound on and the lack of auto on headlights. I enjoy the quality the subaru brand projects and thus far reliability is number 1. I have yet to get over 23 MPG even driving highway everyday. If your wanting to buy this vehicle its offroad ability is great, but the luxury interior is just not there! I don't have any rattling but considering the forester is mostly plastics I know its coming.

Bought my first subaru in 2001 and it was perfect, rock solid till the day I sold it last week. The new replacement a XT sure looks nice BUT... Rattles something fierce and all over. The headlights wont work sometimes (had to shut the truck off and restart to get it working) windows software maybe?? The drivetrain makes bad noises when turning and the turbo (maybe) made a bad squealing sound for miles you first start the truck. I figured its under warranty let it blow up. The rear window for some reason wants to open with no one pushing buttons. The heater works in reverse. Have a small book for repairs. Will I buy another Subaru - I think Not. Too bad I didn't keep my old model, my fault.
