Used 2001 Subaru Forester Consumer Reviews
Lemon?
This is my first time owning a Subaru and I was very happy with it until a few weeks ago. It was always very reliable. I have had it in all kinds of conditions from 115 degree Arizona summers to mountains in Colorado to harsh winters in Ohio and never had any major problems besides routine maintenance. I had the head gasket replaced according to the recall a year and 6 months ago. On a recent trip the head gaskets both blew, blowing up the entire engine. Check engine light was on already due to oxygen sensors and had been for 2 days. Called the dealership, there was nothing they could do as the warranty on the head gasket repair had expired 6 mos before. Very costly repair, very disappointing.
Good, but not Great
Rides great, handles great, looks good. Handles rain and snow without a problem and is comfortable to drive or be a front seat passanger. Has decent amount of power (more powerful and quieter than CRV and RAV4). It also has a lot of cargo room. Whoever designed the interior should look for a new job. The back seat is cramped and cannot move back and forth or recline. The drink holder is in the worst spot possible (except if they put it in front of the instrument cluster). Also, the gas mileage, while not bad, is NOT what it states on the sticker. Overall a great car and a great value, just wish they would follow the CRV interior.
Things They Missed
I have owned this vehicle for over an year, here are my comments and thoughts about it. 1. The Visor is too small, very inconvenient when driving with the sun on the driver side. 2. The cargo cabin window (passenger side) should have had the defroster too (would help in seeing blind spot better). 3. Jiffy Lube can do the same service at 15,000 miles for $50, subaru dealer (John Elway Subaru) charges $250.00 for an an oil change. 4. Seats are very hard. Lumbar support is useless. 5. Temperature guage cannot display temperatures below 0 degrees (shows the number with out the minus). 6. Temperature guage does not show inside temperature (no options available).
Does Everything Pretty Well
I have had this car for 3 years and the only surprise repair has been the radiator which had a small leak. It was fixed under warranty my cost was my time. The car is a nice compromise of fun, safety, comfort, looks and performance. It is faster than the Honda or Toyota and it can haul a fair amount of stuff. Gas mileage is not great and the back seat is only for kids. Slipping dangerously on snow requires a determined driver. I would buy this car again.
off-road wonder
Auto club knows me well from my early years of off-road exploring in inappropriate vehicles. I've had all the SUV's and this one does it all without the huge fuel costs. Walks over snow covered roads, jeep trails and hiking trails. Yes, I did that, looking for a lost child. A forest rd in AZ went from good to gone and we made it without a problem. A rate this car Outback-Outstanding.
