2017 Hyper Blue with moon roof and eyesight
I wanted a small economy car with something extra. Over the last 20 years I have owned a jeep, F250 diesel, an expedition and a ford mustang.I prefer driving from more of a siting position in a jeep / truck than laying down like in a mustang and like a good view I get with my truck. I travel for business a lot and have driven ever 4 cylinder rentals for years and have hated them. The thought of looking for small and economic wasn't something I was thrilled about. I did a lot of research and came across the crosstrek. I watched videos of the car in snow and dirt and it sold me and I went out and test drove it. I like the feel and suspension, it seamed healthy, stout and something more than it was. My test drive was short but I liked it. I did a lot of research after on the car after I test drove it and heard the complaints,,,cheaply made, slow, crapy stereo nd road noise. After a month drove it again looking for these things and finally bought one with all the trims for 3K under MSRP. Drove it for a weekend on a trip put 500 miles on it and love it. This is my wife's primary and now I drive her mustang giving my truck a break. After the trip this is what I have determined. Radio gets some complaints,,,,mine is great. Best sound system I have ever had stocked. Driving and steering is great, easy no effort and smooth. Bumps and pot holes are not bad, suspension handles it without breaking your jaw, road noise, yeah a little high but I drive a diesel so no issues and have no problem talking to my wife. I guess 2017 they worked on it some. The eyesight is amazing, while on cruise control a car cut me off,,it is what those people from VA do. The car slowed, got to distance and then picked up speed to where it was set. While at a street light, eyesight saw the car in front on me move and told me to get me moving :) I hate 4 cylinder cars,,,,this one I love it and wish I could afford two! There are tons of complaints on pick up and RPMS, In town I have no issues, the little beastie gets to 35 quick and then kind of lags a little. Getting on to highways is slow and so is passing but once your up to speed I had no issues up to 80 and the RPMS were at 2500. In VA I see a lot of crosstreks, not so many in NC but the ones in VA are mostly in the fast lane :) While this isn't the mustang it does what it should and it's fine for me. I have driven a lot of 4 cylinders that did a lot worse over the years. Overall the car is a simple build, interior is basic but I think it will last and the orange stitching is a nice touch. Just be advised on rainy days eyesight doesn't work and neither does that navigation LOL but works on my cell so I don't care. I love my truck,,,,,and love this car to. It isn't my truck but enjoy driving it just the same and to be honest,,,,,I enjoy driving this a hell of a lot more than our mustang. I have never cared enough to write a car review,,,,but the little beastie deserves some praise with all negatives I have read. Funny even the negative reviews all say it is a great car LOL. Will see in 100,000 miles what it does but my hyper blue gives me faith it will last along time rjolly8@nc.rr.com

Great car
Great car for the price. Responsive steering. Better traction and acceleration than my 2014 Nissan Juke Nismo. I also enjoy having both more cargo and passenger space. So far I love it.

Love my Crosstrek, wish it had good quality paint!
The Crosstrek handles well, gets great gas mileage, is very comfortable to drive and ride in, and I love the blind side assist and the back up camera - but Subaru went CHEAP on the paint! Ugh! I keep my car clean and hand wax it for protection and there is chipped paint all over the place. I have just over 9,000 miles and have had it about 5 1/2 months, and drive mostly on paved roads. Very glad I sprung for the hood and door edge protective coating, only wish the entire car could have bee not wrapped in that stuff. Not a happy camper...especially since I'm someone who keeps a car for over 200,000 miles. I can see a professional paint job in its future. (Bought it April 24, 2017, the field for the year below isn't working on my iPad) UPDATE 10-12-18, ~ 35,000 MILES: Still love the car, still hate the paint--and the paint is getting worse over time. Tons of little nicks and chips, and now I understand a paint job is around $5k, not $2k like I originally thought, so that's out. C'mon Subaru, fix this so I can make this my NEXT car too, cuz I won't sign up again if the paint is the same.

Happy
The car is very new for me, and I've driven only about 250 miles so far, but so far I am happy because the car is both capable and has some personality. Mine is crystal white with black leather interior and I love the appearance. It makes me feel happy to walk up to it in the parking lot because it is really cute, and the interior is also attractive. The orange stitching on the seats give the interior a little style; the navigation is bright and clear; and the moonroof keeps it feeling open and airy inside; and the interior is overall logical. The handling is excellent. I've driven in snow on roads where some cars are sliding and my car was driving along just fine. I haven't had issues with acceleration and have been driving 65 mph on the highway without problems. The gas mileage seems quite good and the gas tank seems to be big enough as I still have half a tank of gas after going about 250 miles. The Eyesight and other safety features also give me a feeling of security. Visibility is also great. There are just a few negatives that I've noticed so far. The biggest negative I've noticed is that the bottom cushion of the driver's seat is too hard. The back of the seat and headrest are actually very comfortable so it's really just the bottom. I also wish that the seat could be adjusted electrically instead of manually. The other thing that I would change is the placement of the buttons for the seat warmers. When driving, I have to reach behind and feel around to try to find it or look back for it. Other than the padding in the bottom of the seat, the lack of electric adjustment to the seat and the placement of the heat seater button, I really am happy with this beautiful and capable car. 7/6/17 Update: I continue to be very happy with my car. I love driving it. I like the adaptive cruise control on the highway as well as the little beeper that lets me know if the car in front of me moves when waiting at a traffic light for a while. The seats even became much more comfortable after a few months of use. I have, however, had a few issues with the connection to Audible on my iphone dropping and I really don't know why this happens. Overall, though, very happy with my car and would buy the exact same car if I were to do it again!

my thoughts
The Crosstrek is a very nice crossover. The interior is well finished and laid out. There are no blind spots. The exterior is pleasing and well finished. It could, however, use more storage areas both in the cabin and in the cargo area. The transmission shifts very well for the most part but, is not great. The engine has enough power for my needs but, in my opinion, under-powered by most peoples standards and it's a bit noisy. Based on prior Subaru ownership, the Crosstrek should be exceptionally reliable. Coming from a KIA Soul it's a step up in respect, feel and most things but, if the Soul was available in all wheel drive, I would have purchased another one.

3 weeks into the car
This is my wife's new car, purchased end of year clearance. To get what she wanted, especially at end of year, she had to get the Premium rather than the more basic. The car surprised me after reading the reviews by Edmunds itself. I had to ease off of the gas pedal when it jumped ahead. There was definitely NOT a 10 second gap from 0 to 60. The car gets out of its own way without problem. Merging on the California freeways was no problem at all, the car has plenty of pep. The inside is quite beautiful. The only negative so far is that we can't add ceramic film to the windshield due to the Eyesight cameras. Ceramic film does keep out a good bit of heat on my RAV4 when parked in the hot CA sun all day, keeping the steering wheel warm to the touch in hot sun rather than HOT untouchable. The 2017 Crosstrek has been a pleasure to drive so far. It has been a year, and I am completely happy with my choice of cars. The Crosstrek is still a fun car to drive. It rides and handles beautifully. Subaru has definitely replaced Toyota in my heart.

Love my 2017 Subaru Crosstrek!!!
I give this vehicle an overall 4.9 Stars. My only complaint is the technology...such as, voice command (difficult to use), available apps, and the Starlink (difficult to use) isn't up to par with things like, Android Auto and Apple Carplay that is available in other brand vehicles. Starlink is very sub-par, and needs major improvement. Other than that...EVERYTHING else is perfect! Favorite vehicle I've owned, by far.

Two Years 28K miles. Like a Favorite Pair of Jeans
I have always driven economy compact and subcompact cars. So the engine performance with the Crosstrek doesn't disappoint me. I find it acceptable. My average fuel economy over the 28K miles has been 26 MPG, which is about the same as I had gotten with a Pontiac Vibe, and that is a smaller, lower riding, two wheel drive car. I am not disappointed with the Crosstrek's economy. The higher ride height coupled with great outward visibility creates an amazing driving experience. I always want to be driving, even if I don't have anywhere in particular to go, I just love driving this thing. The HVAC system is logically setup with large rotary controls that have a high quality movement as you twist them. The air-conditioner works good in the desert climate where I live. The heater and windshield defogger work good in winter here, and in the snow up in the mountains. The backup camera displays a very good, clear image of whats behind you, and paired with rear cross traffic alert. really makes backing up less stressful. I LOVE the Eyesight system! I use it everyday commuting to work on the freeway and city streets. Doing my own oil changes is simple with the oil filter on top of the motor, and I installed a Fumoto valve to replace the oil plug. My Crosstrek is Crystal White Pearl, and I have no issues with paint quality. In fact it is a beautiful pearl when kept washed and waxed. For having a small footprint, the Crosstrek is roomy and airy inside. Negatives are a windshield that chips easy, and headlights that are crap. I replaced my headlights with LED's, much, much better now. So, just like a favorite pair of jeans, I always want to be in it. I am ready to take on the day, and whatever the weather and road conditions dish out.

2017 Crosstrek Poor Paint
I bought my Crosstrek Brand New in 2017, it is a great car with all the bells and whistles I thought I would possibly want for the next ten years. I bought his model for the sportiness of it and its handling. The only down side to the car is the paint is very easy to chip on the hood. I have a multitude of chips on the hood so I took it to the dealership to find out about the warranty on the paint. I was parked in the garage in front of an older model Crosstrek that had severe Hail damage dents were all over that hood, But not one single paint chip. I thought sure I had a valid case then., This years Paint is terrible. But no I just got off the call from the dealer that said he exhausted his attempts to get it covered.... I dont really believe he tried as the last time I called he said his warranty person had not been in..... anyway SUBARU you really need to step up and cover this terrible paint job. Its only been two years with all this chipped paint there is something wrong on your end.

Chillin' in the Adirondacks
Love my new 2018 Crosstrek in pearl white. Two weeks of snow and bitter cold in central adirondacks with trips to the slopes and Nordic trails. Great handling in snow on unimproved roads. Also very confident on one lane highways. No problems passing plowtrucks and Sunday drivers. 34.9 mpg on trip to to Philly. Thought the heated seats seeemed too warm until temp dropped to -20F this week. Cozy. Impressed with tech and connectivity to iPhone. Very intuitive. Base audio is excellent. Can't wait to take on local jeep trails come trout season. No reservations.

Crosstrek converted us from a Toyota Family
After 20+ years of owning only Toyota's - 3 Corrollas, 1 Sienna, Pickups, 1 Lexus - the Crosstrek broke our trend. We tried 4 different Toyota, Honda and Kia models while shopping for this car and felt for the cost, that the Subaru gave us everything we wanted with better visibility and a little more sportiness in a smaller SUV style. We needed a 4 door vehicle with ease of transporting elderly persons. Getting into and out of the backseat in some models requires maneuvering over the back wheel. The Subaru has an even level entry and exit with few obstacles. We also needed an occasional opportunity to fold down seats and haul materials. The front seats need to be moved forward to accommodate the head rest. That could work more smoothly but is the only negative I've hit so far. The paddle shifting appeals to the younger driver in our family and the overall size is easy to park. Works for the specs we set out to meet with car purchase.

XV - Not for me
We leased a 2017 XV Crosstrek Premium trim. Driving is hit and miss with the CVT. Sometimes quick off the line but slow when you want to pass. The 4 cylinder is noisy too. The tech features were lacking - no Apple car play and what is available needs a subscription. No remote start and the backup cam is small and lacks resolution. Fuel economy - mixed is 25-27, the best we had with 90% highway is 32. Not comfy on long drives - it is a OK city commuter. Hatchback comes in handy. - I think it had 2 recalls - Brake switch and ignition switch (key would get stuck in the ignition). currently - 32,000 miles. 2 months left on lease. Edge

All Ok now
I had chronic starting problems with my 2017 Crosstrek that couldn't be solved until one day with a service tech I attempted to start the engine and couldn't; he pointed out that I was giving the vehicle gas while trying to start it and that this is what was interfering with the starting. I had always started my cars in the same way but had to learn not to touch the gas pedal when turning the key. Since then, all has thankfully been fine. I have two complaints about this vehicle; one is that the ride is very bumpy and the other is the Bluetooth. The Bluetooth in this vehicle often doesn't understand basic commands and goes into a lengthy explanation of what you can say. It also requires several steps to make a call with voice commands. The best feature is that you can turn this vehicle around on a dime; it's very easy to do u-turns in places where normally there would not be enough space to make it without a three point turn.

New Subaru Crosstrek
It's a really great car; I love that it is so roomy and comfortable for a small SUV. It handles REALLY well in the rain and mud due to the standard AWD. I haven't gone off-road much but the little that I have done, the car has handled very well, as expected. Really LOVE the sun visors with their extensions, which block the sun when I'm heading east in the morning and west in the afternoon. Other things to know: Gas mileage is a bit tricky and takes some practice to make sure you get the mileage you expect. Lights and wipers work the opposite as they did in my previous car (Ford), and figuring out how the heating and cooling works with the 3 knobs has taken a little practice. And this new vehicle has way more electronics than my prior vehicle so it is an ongoing learning process. Overall, it is a great vehicle that I am enjoying driving and hope to have for a long time.

Sporty and Great for Active Life
Fun looking car to drive! Safe and reliable in snow and ice. Great traction and smooth on bumps. Comfortable bucket seats and headrests are perfect fit. However, circuit outlets for charging phone can go out easily. Also, leaving light on w/o engine running can weaken battery rather quicker than many other cars. In addition, the process for dialing a paired phone by touching buttons on steering wheel and then answering questions is long and drawn out...many more steps than in KIAs, Hondas and Nissans. Overall, I think Subaru has made a great car that needs an upgrade fix on Bluetooth/hands free technology and circuit breaker components

Safe + Comfort = Crosstrek
I am enjoying my first Subaru and would recommend anyone looking for a safe, reliable vehicle to purchase the crosstrek! It it fun to drive and I love the safety features. The crosstrek is loud when first starting up, something I didn't notice when test driving because I didn't leave the vehicle running and walk around it. I am surprised it doesn't have power seats or a power lift-gait.

Love it, although 1 big complaint
UPDATE: I've had my Subaru 2 years now but I'm still afraid to drive it off road much. Or at least on anything but a well maintained dirt road after the expensive tire fiasco. This is such a disappointment and I would not have purchased a Suraru had I known about this horrible issue with them. I live on a ranch and I'm afraid to even drive it across my fields as that's where I popped the tire that caused me to have to buy 4 brand new costly tires. Why is this vehicle made this way and the buyer isn't told before buying one :(. If the vehicle is rated for off-road use then it should have good enough tires available to handle it. Mine had top of the line M&S tires, the best I could buy in this small size to fit my Crosstrek and they are definitely the weak link in the system... and a very expensive one if need to drive off-road like I do on my ranch. I'll ever buy another Subaru, much as I love driving it and the fuel mileage, as the cost of always having to replace all 4 tires with new ones every time a rock pops a tire is turning into a horrendous and unstainable cost. I've had mine about a year and love it on the whole. However, I was shocked when I blew a tire (not repairable) and was required to buy 4 new tires. The tires were less than a year old. I'm now afraid to take it off road much as a result, as a blown tire is EXPENSIVE. It's also a bit gutless going up our mountain roads. But otherwise, I do love it. Drives easily. Good fuel mileage. I can carry 18/50# bags of feed easily w/back seats down. etc.

Fun, Quality Small SUV
I bought my Premium in July 2017, and I still enjoy this car! It is quite peppy and does have adequate acceleration. No, you won't win a 1/4-mile drag race, but it has the power to get up and go, as well as get out of its own way. The handling is nothing short of amazing. It sticks to the road like glue and I had to get used to it handling so well. The heating and cooling work VERY well and are much better than I'm used to. In PA, we can go from hot to cold weather quickly and this car keeps me quite comfy. Visibility is excellent without any blind spots. The moonroof is a very nice option and really opens up the interior nicely. Suspension handles the bumps in the roads nicely and I hardly notice them. We've had some snow recently and the AWD just laughed at it. Traction is amazingly smooth and tight, but the tires that came with it let it down. Even in the rain, I can feel how tight this car sticks to the road. This is my first Subaru after being a Dodge man (30 years of ownerships) all my life, and it certainly won't be my last. My only complaints are: A) the mileage is not what I expected and think it could be better. In winter, I am only averaging 23 MPG, which is worse than my 2009 Avenger SXT 6-cylinder which gets 24 MPG. I was under the impression this vehicle would obtain 26 MPG in winter, but it doesn't. Summer is fine, having hit 29-30 MPG (mix, city and highway). B) When shifting from drive to reverse, or reverse to drive, there is a pause in the transmission. Maybe it's the way a CVT works, I don't know, but it is annoying. If you're backing out of a driveway onto a busy street, make sure you don't have to gun it right away because it WILL pause. C) The entertainment software seems clunky and is limited, but it does what I need, so it's not the biggest issue. I have all my music on a 32GB flash drive and have it plugged into the USB in the console, and it works well. Overall, this is a well-built, solid quality car that I am more than happy to have purchased, and I would purchase another without any hesitation. The reason I bought a 2017 model instead of waiting for the 2018 models was due to color. I preferred the Desert Khaki of the 2017 model over any other color the 2018 came in.

Good Bye Subaru
I had a 2017 Crosstrek that was purchased brand new and I followed every maintenance appointment to the tee. Under 50,000 miles and low and behold my check engine light goes on!! I took it immediately to the dealership since they were the only ones that had serviced it.. I was told that the gasket-exhaust, oil ring, catalytic converter would have to be replaced. The dealership also stated that my warranty expired 3 days prior and they would not honor. I worked with the warranty department of Suburu and they offered to pay half... To make a long story short, had it fixed, sold it and I'm back to owning a Toyota!
Crosstrex
The Forester is much nicer. handles better than the Crosstrex.

Heartbroken
Bought my 2017Crosstrek in 2020. I was so excited to finally be in a place in my live to be able to afford a Subaru. Started having problems with it in February 2024 and found out today that it needs a head gasket replaced. 5+K $ 😭. I knew Subarus used to be notorious for blowing head gaskets, but everything I read said they fixed the problem. Turns out not so much. Now I am left broke and heart broken because Subarus are supposed to be reliable. Please be weary if you are considering buying a Subaru. I wanted to be a life long Subaru owner, now I am considering having to change.
