Pierre's xB
This car is fun to drive and turns heads in town. Although it is marketed to the young crowd it is a great car for people over 50 because it is very easy to get in and out. The legs room in the back is outstanding even for tall people. My father-in-law is 8' tall and he still has room before in knees. When the back seats are down the cargo volume is huge for a car this size.
I still love it!
I loved this car the first time I sat in it. The placement of the instruments, the amazing interior room, the outstanding visibility is great. I am 6'7" and have 6" head clearance as the driver and my 6'9" son can sit behind me without having his knees in my back or his head on the ceiling. I've been in quite a few different SUVs, and NONE have had as much room for 5 adults as the xB. My only gripe is the steering wheel does impinge on the leg room a bit, but that happens with virtually every car I've driven except large luxury cars. It handles well, and has a great feel for the road, though can be a bit of a rough ride if you are used to luxury rides. The storage space is minimal.

Crash Worthy
Just totaled my XB (04/19/08) with a head-on crash with a Dodge Dakota P-up (airbags deployed). The drivers area was in perfect shape. The front end was crushed to the base of the windshield. Crumple zones worked as advertised. I walked away as did my 4 year old son who was strapped in his child seat in the back passenger side. I'm back in the market to buy another one(2004-2006). 2008 XB's look like they were designed by the Michelin Man...Yuck!
211,083 miles and STILL RELIABLE !!!
This is an update on my previous review titled. 140K Upright Go-Kart Written by George on 06/14/2008. This lil'car with lots of interior room is still super reliable. I have replaced normal wear items like tires, power steering/water pump belt and front brake pads. I change the oil and oil filter every 5k, air filter every 6mo. and transmission gear oil every year. I suck out the power steering and brake fluid with a turkey baster and refill every year. The xB is pretty good in the snow with all season tires, however, it's super stable and near impossible to get stuck with snow tires.
Form Follows Function
If you want is a cheap, extremely reliable four door with way more space than you'd first notice, this is it. If you want comfort and power, go elsewhere. If you don't expect more than you should from this true Econo-Box, than you'll actually find the Xb a joy to own. It's actually fun to drive and does well with it's limited HP (tho an automatic with the air on must be a drag). It's extremely roomy inside, and easy to get into for older folks, and it'll haul lots of junk. Top that off w/30+ mpg and rock solid reliability and cheap to maintain prices and it's perfect for those who like it's frugal design nature.
2004 scion xB - 205k+ miles and drives like new
We bought this 1st gen xB new. Just turned 207,000 miles with no major repairs. In fact, has the original battery, original shocks, has never had (or needed) an alignment and it still drives like it did when it was new (not a rattle anywhere). I have done routine maintenance (fluids, tune-up, belts and hoses) which seems to be about all the little box needs. I would drive it cross country tomorrow without any reservations. We have 2 newer vehicles (Mazda CX-5 and Honda Ridgeline) and although they are both great vehicles as well, my go to daily driver is the xB. No plans to sell it . . . . ever.

Owner's Report
I love the fact that I get great gas milage. My teenage sons really like the way the car makes heads turn. The ride is a little rough because the car sits close to the ground. You will feel EVERY bump in the road. It takes a little getting used to when driving at night. There is NO dash panel that US driver's are accustomed. The 6-CD changer is a MUST. You will hear some wind noise when driving even with all windows up and doors locked. I think Toyota could have had a tighter build with the door panels.
140K Upright Go-Kart
140K and still tight! Handling is very nimble. Vehicle stability control works great in the snow when driving on snow and anybody spins out in front of you (or when deer shoot out from nowhere on dark rural wet roads like where I live. VSC compliments the ABS, EBD & TRAC control. The shape makes it look lower than what it actually is (measure it!). It has the same ground clearance as my Corolla). VERY good in snow I run all season tires all the way around and if the snow is substantial I'll lower the tire pressure on the front tires to 26lbs and it's super stable and tracks great. I'm impressed and I live in a very rural area with many hills (ski resort area in northern NJ).
Over 40? Easy Entry, Easy Exit
My Thundercloud Blue Metallic 'B' was the first one ordered and delivered to the MIDWEST via Molle Toyota, KC, Mo. Ordered it with AEM, H-strut, security system, amber footlights, and chrome doorsills. I added an armrest this past year, it wasn't available in 2003. It gets between 29 (summer heat) and 36 MPG. I only drive 5 miles to work, but it will double next year to 10. I use it weekends for short trips, chores, jaunts under 200 miles; drive it roundtrip once a month to St. Joe MO. My wife loves it - after I got the armrest. I expect to drive it as a commuter until I retire next decade... unless a better 'B' comes along! My only problem with it was a broken driver's door latch, which was fixed under warranty.
Coot Scoot
I wanted a van w/o the huge size so I bought an xB. It fits me to a "T." It is fairly comfy for long trips, not too noisy and easy to drive. It fits my dog and two passengers plus our luggage, or me plus 3 HS Football players and their equipment with legroom to spare. I hope it'll last at least 16 more years!
I Love It
I have had my xB for one and a half years. It still seems new to me, nothing is breaking or malfunctioning. The interior still looks new with little up keep. I have owned many models and makes of cars. My xB and a Mazda Miata are the best cars I have ever owned.
Loved the B
The Scion Xb is a great little car. The styling is not for everyone. But it is incredibly practical, with enormous cargo room for its size, great gas mileage and dependability. I'm talking about the 1st generation version. I don't know about the later models, but in my opinion, Scion ruined the car by making it bigger and clunkier looking. You don't buy this car for performance or handling. You buy it for its reliability, cargo capacity and economy. Or, maybe you just think it looks cool. We loved ours.

Toyota quality slipping
I bought my Scion Xb about three weeks ago and for the most part it's a good car/wagon/whatever. It has tonsof room inside yet it is so small on the outside. The 6-disc stereo is far better than the BOSE stereo in my Audi A4. The bad --rear bumper is already loose and looks like it's coming off. Rubber trim coming off, rattles in dash. Rotten MPG
Scionized
My Scion XB has provided an awesome driving experience. It's spacious interior and great gas mileage make it an A+ automobile. It's fun on the road - handles well and has a good amount of pep considering it's small engine size. It's definitely a city car, but runs just fine on the freeway...
BEST CAR IVE OWNED
FUN CAR, SPORTY, QUICK, VERY ROOMY. I HAVE 2 KIDS AND WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM. THE PRICE CANT BE BEAT. I BOUGHT IT WITH THE SPORT PACKAGE. IT CAME WITH THE 18" WHEELS AND THE COLD AIR INTAKE. I OWN A DENALI, BMW AND A BENZ,AND IF I HAD TO KEEP ONE, IT WOULD BE THE SCION...
Just Crashed my 2004 Scion XB
I wrecked my 2004 XB 4/18/08. Front head-on crash with a midsize Dodge pick-up. Air bags popped. My XB is a right-off! Crumple zones worked as designed. There was no intrusion into the passenger area at all. I walked away with only seat belt marks and a bump on my right shin. My 4 year old son was in the back seat in his child seat and only had a shoulder belt mark and was okay. I'm a 41 year old commercial pilot and liked the styling (in Japan a lot) with a practical Corolla drive line. I'm looking for another 2004/05 XB ASAP.
Cowmuting Cube
Purchased the box for cowmuting. (Its painted in a black and white cow pattern) Even with four full grown men the box does well with the auto. Passing up hill is no problem if you lock out the overdrive. It deals well with the traffic on I15 and I5. I have had only two minor problems (the inside fan was making a ticking noise free warranty repair, rear air dam was tweaked after some road trash self repaired.). The MP3 CD player does well. Luggage space is a little tight when we are all off to work with all our junk, but we manage. The rear window wiper is almost useless. It goes, stops, and rocks, what more cud you want!
My XB best car ever
This car is a great value 34+ MPG 25 bucks to fill the tank! I have got so much stuff in this car moving shopping I got 5 palets in the back with the door closed 12 bags of yard mulch. The Service is not very expensive just change the oil and simple stuff I purchased at 120000 miles and at 146000 no issues just brakes and routers can get dusty and make a noise so need to be serviced ever so often. My car was just rear ended unfortunately it's a total loss but I love the car so I am upgrading to an 06 XB. the car holds it's value very well it actually got way more then I payed for it from insurance. I recommend using senthetic oil and I change it myself every 4000 to 6000 miles it's very easy to work on yourself. Also the back door Handel will brake at some point and they are $70 on eBay perpainted I try not to pull on the Handel to open the rear because it's only attached with 2 screws and cheap plastic. The ride is a bit loud your sitting in a big box lol. The sespention is a bit stiff. This is a good car has lots of leg room head room for tall people and adults can fit in the back seat 3 can fit but 2 can fit comfortably.

Proud Owner
I Love My Scion! This car is the best value on the market for a fully loaded vehicle. It's so fun to be able to bulid your own car.
My Scion (Artoo is his name)
Five adults go out to dinner in this car, it's so roomy -- one is 6'5". When we go out with another couple, they always want to take our Scion. I have hip/knee arthritis, but no problem getting in and out. 93 year old mother-in-law can do it alone. It's little on the outside, but huge on the inside. It also drives/corners like a sports car -- just not low- slung. Good visibility 360 degrees. No blind spots. Toyota quality, 100% Japanese made. What more could you want?
Poor A/C on an otherwise brilliant car
We made an special effort to find, buy and ship this car back to Dallas after my wife test drove on in Santa Rosa. At the test drive my wife reported the A/C seemed weak. On delivery we found the A/C marginal at over 100F. Taken to the local Toyota dealer found the air mix control off but this did little to fix overall performance. Appears the is the first of a new system of not compressor clutch. Its a shame the system is underpowered as the rest of the car is like nothing else on the market.
No longer impress with Toyota
I brought the xB 8 months ago & I am getting rid of it. I am tired of seeing cars on my bumper, out of my rearview mirror, as I enter onto the highway. The engines Toyota put in their smaller cars are weak. I do believe the technology is out were they could get better gas mileage out of a larger (say 2 liter) engines. This car was in the shop 12 of the first 30 days I owned it. All wipers were replaced, the molding around the header was replaced and the back door has open 3 times while driving on the highway. The dealer was helpful (in a dealer way) but did not fix the door because they could not reproduce the problem. This is my first and last Toyota.
Just a test drive
Recently had a test drive and did not find what I expected (after reading all positive reviews). I have 2003 Corolla S and 2003 Mitsu Outlander. Compare to them there is nothing in this car except exterior look. The gas mileage worse then Corolla's (despite smaller engine). There is less space then in Outlander. The performance much worse then on any of them two. (I was scared how easy to make 6000 RPM on this car). The price is $200 more then Corolla S and only $2000 less then Outlander. (based on the engine size this is the car from ECHO/Accent league) I think the Matrix is much better value, if you want to have the fifth door and Toyota Quality.
Scion, the new Geo
I had this car/van for 2 months and I already had the clutch go bad, it rattles and the power window died. I thought Toyota was suppost to be a quality car? I had a Saturn for 7 years and never had one problem other than were and tear related. I will probably sell this car right before the warrenty is up.
Scion xB
This car is a quality vehicle.
Owner Review
We love Them so much "We bought two"!!
In a Nutshell
This unique looking vehicle is living up to, and surpassing the promotional advertising and sales pitches that I heard before I purchased it two weeks ago.The "Toyota" quality workmanship, and the interior design are both excellent values. The handling far exceeds my expectations, and boy! do I feel good stopped at a light next to a gas-guzzler SUV. YES, I care about the environment. This little fuel efficient cube fits my family of four to a T.
i wish
excellent but too small engine not enough power especially going uphill
Hot Little Box
Reliability (100,000 mile warranty), Fuel Economy (32 mpg), and Price (14 Gs) also included great new look!
Fun car
I love this car!I'm a 27-year old female and i don't regret buying the car for a minute. It's good-looking, lots of interior space, and an incredible price.People have given me mixed reviews on what they think of it,but the nay-sayers are just set in their ways and afraid of anything new.The only bad thing about this car is my insurance is more expensive, because they're expecting 20-something unmarried males to be buying the car. Also, I would have liked to have the option of a sunroof.Otherwise, no complaints at all.
It's True Beauty Is On The Inside.
I actually went to the dealer to look at another car. After rejecting it as too small, I sat in the xB as a joke. (I thought it looked silly.) I was shocked by how big it felt. So shocked I took it out for a drive. The automatic was so fun, I asked if I could drive the 5 speed. By the end of the second drive, I actually liked the way it looked. I love this car!
Xb!!!
had it for almost two months and already put on over 3000 miles. love the attention it gets.
love it so far
i picked up the xB as a second car. my main car is a 2002 BMW 325ci, but i drive 30K miles a year and have some big cargo requirements, too. so far it has been great, with one, hopefully isolated, exception, and that was when the car power-stalled on different occasions coming off the freeway. the problem was checked out by the dealer (no problems found) and has not occurred since. well, one more gripe...the gas mileage is nowhere near their claimed levels. i've been averaging 28 mpg on mixed city/highway driving.
Owner
The XB is what I expected. When ever I park I always get asked what is it? And I tell them what it is and who builds it, then show them the interior room and they like it. For a compact little wagon it's a great vehicle.
Fun, Practical, and Good Milages
XB is my first new car. I love is so much in terms of its style, good milages, and fun to drive. For a regular small car's price, it has all the features I need, like ABS, Traction control, stability control, auto-lock, auto window, and AC. All my friends love to drive it around town! It's just fun to drive!
My little xB
The car has a wonderful new very unconventional design when compared to the current roundness of new cars. The car has lots of room for passengers or cargo but unfortunately not for both. Great gas mileage. Great no haggle buying experience, if you go to the right dealer.
Too much fun...
I have put almost 3,000 miles on this car and I still look forward to driving it around. I can't believe that such a tiny car feels so huge on the inside. Upon first seeing it, most of my friends didn't even know what it was and they were shocked to learn that was cheaper than the Civic I drove before my xB. Everyone agrees that it feels like a higher end vehicle.
very impressed
i sell other makes of cars and i bought this one because of it's value. it's just a great car for the money
gotta stick with a toyota
I really wasn't shopping for a car, but knew I was dissatisified with the one I had. I sat in the Scion and I was sold. I love this vehicle.
The perfect city car!
I was looking for a replacement for my Honda Civic that would be as fun to drive and reliable, but with more utility. After Toyota announced in 2002 that they would start selling the Toyota bB (as it's called in Japan) in California this year, my decision was pretty much made! For my review see favorite features and suggested improvements below...
Still getting the stare.
A few months into owning the car and I still have to answer the usual questions about it (ie: Who makes this? Is it a hybrid? Why did you buy such an ugly car?...) It's a fun ride and offers lots of space for passengers. I was in a minor accident a few weeks after buying the car and was surprised at how quickly parts were available for such a new model.
The car is great, but dealers are shady
The car is great, and while it still lags a little on the freeway, I dont feel a "huge" difference between the acceleration with this engine and my 245hp F-150. Of course the weight has a lot to do with that. While the car is great, be careful of dealers if negotiating a lease. They will tell you they "Will throw in" certain options, and charge for them while trying to disguise it as part of the lease. If you can, find the Scion only dealerships built into certain Toyota dealerships so that you dont run into shady financers.
Love my XB!
I love it! Mine came with leather and a sunroof installed by dealership. They knew people would want this feature! I love driving it, oh how everyone stares! Sound system is excellent, soooo much room! It feels sooo huge inside compared to how it looks on the outside!
This is an AMAZING car!
I just wanted to take the time and say what an awesome car this is! Toyota really outdid themselves in putting together this great concept and it has really shown through its amazing sales in California and hopefully in the nation. The styling is great to begin with, and it's very different, so expect a lot of heads to turn and turn and turn. The interior is very well equipped with features that you would normally only find on a higher end vehicle, such as ABS brakes and traction control, just to name a few. The amount of space in the vehicle is amazing, larger than anything I have every seen in the compact/subcompact almost SUV like car class.
This Car is Like Roy Jones Jr. The BEST
Just as Roy Jones Jr. had to keep moving up weight classes to find good competition only to trounce it handily, The Scion xB does the same thing. There isn't any car I'd rather own until you get to around 30 grand. The looks are just amazing and so is the passenger room. I just love this car. And the fact that it has an engine that's just itching to be modded is even better. I recently got 36MPG in my automatic on the freeway and I was nearing 380 miles on the tank. Those who can't see the genius behind this car are doomed to be blind forever. Who would ever expect stupidity to understand genius anyway?
X marks the spot
With over 3000 miles logged it's time to say my part. In trying to figure out what I should buy as my first car I read countless reviews. At first I dismissed the Scion because it was only available in California, but once hooked on it I didn't stop until I owned one. I read every article and review I could find, and from personal experience I'd say it has come through with everything it was said to be and more. From the no pressure sales and extremely nice dealer experience to all the enjoyment I've gotten out of this extremely versatile car. I am beginning to modify it and personalize it and feel that it will make an awesome cruiser.
Awesome
the best car i have ever had
Scion xB
With the cold air intake system, a car that would be considered slow is actually fairly peppy. I've never owned a car that attracted so much attention.
Scion is the best.
This car is the best bang for your buck. It has everything you need and more. It was well worth the money for sure.
PT Cruiser with an Edge
Similar only in in small outside/roomy inside. But as good as the Crooz may be, this box is funkier, handles quite well, gets better gas mileage, and doesn't feel slow in real-world driving. The five speed with optional front strut support and cold air intake is fun to drive, especially with my added 16x7" wheels and 205WR50/16 tires. No racer, but practical and very comfy for 4 XL adults. It's 30+ mpg makes most SUV's obscene by comparison, for street and highway use.
