Used 2006 Nissan Xterra Off-Road 4dr SUV 4WD (4.0L 6cyl 6M) Consumer Reviews
Second xterra, best vehicles I ever owned!
I owned a gen 1 before I bought my gen 2. Bought my gen 1 with 167k on a failed odometer, not sure how many miles were on it. Owner never changed the oil and it ran fine (I did). Drove it two years and sold it. My 06 second gen has been amazing. Only issue I have had is with the universal joint in the back, it likes to chew them up. This is probably due to the fact mine is an off road addition and has a higher lift causing the transmission input angle to be higher causing premature failure of those bearings. It is what it is. I have driven this thing through everything including snow, ice, mud, you name it. Pulled people out of snow banks on the side of the highway, drove through 6 inch plus of snow and my X didn't even flinch. Comfortable, fun to drive, and reasonable gas mileage for what it offers. I have 200k on the odometer and it's still running strong. I will keep it until it dies (probably never will).

My 2006 Xterra Awesome!
I purchased my 06 Nissan Xterra Off Road 4x4 brand new in, yes, you guessed it... 2006. It has the 6 speed manual transmission. I keep up with the regular maintenance. Oil changes every 5,000 kms. Keep up with all of the manufacturers suggested maintenance. I did not ever take it off road. But have had to use 4x4 High and Lo many times. I frequently use the 4x4 High as I live in Northern Alberta where we gets lots of snow. The 4x4 Lo still works with absolutely no noise. The 4x4 High still works with absolutely no noise. I have zero timing chain noise or issues. I have never had SMOD issues and it still has the original radiator. Clean, smooth transmission shifting after all of these years. 15 years in fact! The best vehicle I have ever had. Apart from the money I put into its maintenance, this has been an inexpensive, reliable SUV for me!

Street machine with real offroad cred
Nissan did a great job with the 2006 redesign, esp. the engine upgrade. Handles great on the road. Tight suspension, great pickup, quick starts. Quiet on the highway. No sacrifice in offroad performance. This is a perfect vehicle for around the town driving during the week and offroad trips on weekends. Design and interior are well thought-out with racks from Yakima to handle whatever your gear may be--skis, surfboard, bikes, packs, dog... Stereo sounds great. Great 360 visibility from the cab. Seats 4 comfortably except for the climb. Can change 2 to 4-high to 4- low with locking rear dif. Makes a great utility vehicle.
Clutch Problems
Love just about everything about the car. Only real issue I've had is that the clutch needed to be replaced at 20,700 miles and then again 37,000 miles later. I've been driving manual transmissions for 47 years and never had a problem with clutches wearing so quickly.
Utility and off road
On road: avg 20.5 city/up to 24 hwy mpg. Great utility vehicle, have carried large fridge, washer/dryer, many other home remodeling items. Long road trips are nice with wife and 2 large dogs. Great engine performance, able to sleep in back diagonally (I'm 6'2"). 4x4: have done gnarly 4x4: ground clearance decent, articulation decent, tracks well, departure angle fair, in 4 Low, throttle not sensitive enough, 2Low should be geared lower, shocks OK, rear bottoms out easily (suspension design issue), stock tires fair. Not on par with Jeep off road, but a very good starting point, will have to modify for serious 4x4. Had to replace clutch at 17k, but under warranty. No other problems.
