first review
I have a 5 speed and am overall very happy about my purchase, ive put 2,000 miles on it in a month with many many more to go. The rpms on the 5 spd. Manual seem high. Maybe a 6th gear overdrive would help gas mileage. Other than that I'm averaging 300 miles to the tank and I love driving my xterra

Best SUV on for the price
The XTerra handles both onroad and offroad well. Its plenty roomy,Its a fun tough off road vehicle that is incredibly reliable. Nissan really has their act together. I average 18mpg my best is 21mpg my worst was 14mpg. I drive my X hard and have never had any problems its one of the best cars I have ever owened. I love it. I here people complaining about gas milage. the is only rated at 16 to 18. It the first car That I get the high end of the MPG. I love my X
Love it!
I have had nothing but fun with this vehicle. I can't imagine enjoying one of the more expensive SUVs anymore than this one. I drove it from Massachusetts to Texas and had a comfortable trip, the seats get a bad rap, but I find them very comfortable and supportive in all the right places. I recommend this vehicle to anyone who wants a practical vehicle with a different look and nice price tag.
Great SUV, Poor on Gas!!!!
First foreign vehicle purchased and unfortunately so far its been the most satisfying. Iam in debt to a 2001 SE 2wheel dr.X-terra. Love the Stadium seating in the back seat. Quality of the X-Terra interior is very poor. Exterior black molding yet attractive the first two months now age my Vehicle, because they fade out. I purchased the extended warranty because my electric windows as a total have been replaced 5 times (motors).
Xterra Xtra Special
Got my Xterra Jan 2001 and it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. Been to Nfld , Canada from Deep South Texas -8500 mi round trip & handled like a dream. I think a bigger engine is req'd, but I love my truck. We got the yellow and we still get admiring looks. Best brakes I've ever experienced. For those who find the seats bad, get out and exercise more so you can make your fat butts smaller. Great on and off road...what a blast!! Solid as a rock and suspension is great. The roads down here should qualify as off roads.
kids and dogs and work too
no problems with anything until nearing the 3 year mark, 1 problem, minor this isn't luxury, this is life
Tough lil' truck
This is the fourth SUV I have owned. It handles well on the city streets of Chicago, easy to squeeze into tight parking spots. Hauls my two horse trailer with both of my horses inside with ease, although if you think the gas mileage was bad to begin with, haul a trailer! This SUV is comfortable for people of average size. Anyone over 6 foot will not enjoy the ride as they will barely fit inside.
Awesome Car!!!
This is the perfect first car for anyone. The interior is not the nicest, but with a teen, that's usually not a problem. The engine could be improved but it's enough for most people. You can't go wrong with a Nissan.
gas mileage is terrible
When i first bought this vehicle i didn't do alot of traveling but a few months ago i got promoted and now i travel alot for sales and this is not a traveling suv. The gas mileage is just terrible. Its costing me over $300 dollars a month just to drive it. Thats why im going to trade it in for a subaru. For the gas mileage gains and the fact that the area i live in i still need all wheel drive or 4wd
good all rounder
vehicle has been reliable with the exception of the window motors. i have replaced 3 of the 4. i am willing the last one to fail prior to the warranty running out. fuel mileage is dismal, acceleration is poor, sunroof is useless, and ride over bumps is awful. then again, it is a true SUV based off a truck, not a car dressed as an SUV. other than these few shortcomings and problems, the truck has been easy to live with.
Great SUV
I've been driving my Xterra for 5 years now without 1 problem. It's a fun car to drive, handles well in all weather, and is great for long trips. Gas mileage on the highway is acceptable, not as good for street driving. I feel save in it. We've been rear ended twice and both times the other car was in much worse shape than the Xterra. I'd buy another one.
nice suv
the truck has been great, except for the horrible gas mileage. the engine is nice and quite and the truck handles nice in the city and on the highway.
A Car for the Adventurous Spirit
My Xterra is fun to drive around town, on the highway, and off the pavement. I never have to worry about taking it into poor conidtions. With 4WD and a high clearance, snow, mud, and dirt roads are not an obstacle. There is plenty of room inside for the dog, groceries, or backpacking gear. And if you run out of room inside, there's always the rack up top. The Xterra is designed for adventure down to the last detail. Do not expect luxury here, just functionality. Lots of functionality.
Xterra
Well I have had my 2001 Nissan Xterra for about a year and I have to say that this SUV is great to drive. I was very surprised by the fact that the braking response is excellent for an SUV, there is not that much of a delay. In the snow it has been fearless. My only complaint, like every one else, is the gas mileage is horrendous. I get no more then 250 miles on a full tank...and that is a combination of both city and highway driving, but mostly highway miles. But hey any of us who buy an SUV know what we are getting ourselves in to.
xxxterra
Has been great! Got 100,000+ on brakes. At @ 120,000 had one caliper replaced. Has been very reliable. Still looks good. No complaints.
excellent car
have been driving nothing but Nissan since 1994, had four Nissan since then,i still have two of them now a Maxima, and an Exterra, this small SUV is a very good tough car.
Still going strong
Bought this vehicle brand new in '01 - a few minor issues, all taken care of under warranty. Had it in Alaska for 4 years - terrific in the snow, even better with winter tires. Drove straight from Alaska to Georgia - no problems with comfort or handling. Currently have around 53K miles on it, only maintenance has been regular oil changes. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone.
2001 Xterra
Great car, I had for two years and and not a single problem. It's never been back to dealership for any warranty repairs yet.
01 Xterra V6 4x4
I have driven my Xterra cross country 3 times now and have taken numerous road trips. It is a great vehicle from every standpoint. The gas mileage is ok but is improved with small aftermarket parts. I off road often and have a Rancho lift kit and run LT 285s on the Xterra. Once in 4lo, the Xterra is unstoppable. Even when it was stock, it was very dependable off road. I like how the seats give you a commanding view of the road and are very comfortable. The 3.3L V6 is underpowered but matched with the 5 speed manual tranny, it does well enough. The Supercharged version that came out a few years later would be the way to go. It puts out 210 hp I believe. Either way, the Xterra is a great suv.
Florida ride
I have owned quite a few cars and trucks, but when I purchased this, I fell in love. Everyone says always trade before the miles get too large, but I don't have any desire to trade in. I will probably drive it till it falls apart, and an 80% chance of getting the exact make and model in the future. I love the feeling of being up high and seeing out, I love the interior. For the year of my vehicle, I am glad to say there are no paint discrepancies or rust. Everything in mine is still original, and it has never been touched up or painted.
A real SUV
I love our Xterra. It really is a 4wd. The sunroof is useless and the front seats could use a bit more leg room. Plenty of room in the back seat and lots of cargo space including the top.
Xterra
Great styling, many complaints about the comfort of the front seats ( not my leather recliner, but I think they are OK) Very ruff drive on bummpy pavement, windows rattle when lowered, the hood is very flimsy and we all know about the sunroof.
owner
love the xterra dealer sucks
Baught Used...
From Carmax and so far so pleased. I was surprised how the value decreased no doubt due to the new Cute Utes and the newer Xterra. But I like it just the same.
Xterra 4X4
The nissan Xterra is a good truck. The only thing I don't like about it is the gas. It uses alot of gas but over all the Xterra is a cool truck to have. i love mine and if somthing happen to it i would probley get another one
nissan x
awesome!!!!
x
very cool, i love te body style and all of the little xtras that come along with it. the last thig i love is the little nissan emblem on the front, im proud to drive it!!!
A Real Blast To Own
I really like this vehicle and off road in canyons and roadless areas, it's incredible. However, the gas mileage could be much better. It's engine is pretty powerless on hills and the seats could use a bit more ergonomic design. But, overall, it's a fun SUV to own and drive. With improvements to reflect today's driving issues, I would buy another one.
Most reliable vehicle made
I own a 2001 v6 Xterra, I purchased it 24 years ago for my family, wife and two kids. I bought it with 16,216 miles on it, I now have 470,108k miles on it. It’s started every single day I go to crank it up. I replaced the first cooling fan last year with 464k miles on the vehicle. Engine and power train all original, and all the power windows are original, and still work. I’ve replaced the timing belt twice, it’s due again. But the timing belt is normal maintenance, that has to be done on any vehicle with a timing belt instead of a timing chain. I replaced the the front brake pads 7 times, and the front brake rotors 4 times. This vehicle is rock solid transmission still shifts good, and everything works and sounds like when it has 40k on it. All my friends say they’ve never seen a vehicle with this mileage on the original engine. It’s just a tank. Also the paint is starting to get a little faded on the hood, but it’s never been garage kept. Great vehicle though, I’ve owned Honda, GM, Ford, and Geo, Nissan is a higher quality built vehicle.

Xterra is a great SUV
I've had my Xterra rear-ended 3 times in 6 years and have never had any damage done to my car (granted all less than 5 miles an hour) but the same can't be said for the cars that hit me!
