This car saved my life

I got this car from my parents for graduation. It's lovely. Drives like a dream and I've put this thing in places any other vehicle would have been stuck and it's pushed through and gotten out with no problem at all. About two years ago I got hit at roughly 110mph from behind. Needless to say the car that got shoved under mine was destroyed and the police/EMTs stated that if I were in any other car I would have died on impact. The car still drives like a dream and you can't tell anything bad happened to it. It's the most reliable car I'd ever heard of. My only complaint? The rising gas prices.

We have owned three pathfinders over the years. we currently have two! I love my 2001 LE its the best SUV for the money! it has 200K and runs top notch! the 2001+ have the bigger 3.5 engine and you can tell a differences. Only thing iv had to replace other than normal maintenance was the MAF sensor. Hint (replace with Maxima its cheaper)

BEST FOR TOWING BOAT :)

Yeah, that's my main goal for buying this car after reading all review from other cars. I need a car that can drive strong, tow a boat, buy stuff from Home Depot, take my son to school and have him drive the car later, safety also my major worry so I got the car for $4,600 from a local dealer with 145,000 miles on it. I was lucky after find out that the first owner already took care of the car in the best shape with everything check. I took it to my local mechanic and after 10 min, he told me just put on gas, change oil from time to time and i'm all set to go for a long time. The car tow my Boston Whaler 2000 lbs like nothing behind, unbelievable. The mileage is about 15 mpg but I don't drive it often so I'm OK. I don't put on a premium high octane so it drive OK but save some $$$. The CD is no longer work but everything work fine, the leather after 14 years are still OK, much better than my 1998 Nissan Maxima. I feel very safe when driving this car. Overall handling is very nice except the gas millage the big draw back, but you pay for the power. I will keep this car for a long time because I don't see the need for another SUV.

Having never owned A SUV, I did a lot of research. 240 HP, no longer an industry leader but plenty of power. 6 disk in dash Bose with stearing wheel controls!!!! WOW. I keep hearing about how cramped the backsteat is and..OK a little smaller than most but unless you are over 6'5" 250 lb it is fine. 1 touch up and down windows and sun roof:) You can even roll down the windows with the keyless entry:) This car makes me happy.

bought the SUV brand New. Had the 30,000 checkup done and that's it. now has about 62,000 miles on it 14 years old. changed all oils on a timely basis. towed a 20 ft bayliner boat for 4 years. Never had an issue with the truck except - replaced 1 o2 sensor, replaced heater fan resistor (both done by myself). had the shocks and struts replaced as well as other basics like tires and brakes. No other issues and still drives like a champ. Offroad capabilities and 4 wheel in snand ice are fantastic. made the trip from Oregon to California (900 Miles) about 5 time round trip. love this truck.

Bought this car as a used one owner always garaged car with 187,000 miles. The condition of the Pathy verifies the care and maintain both this vehicle. Interior including leather like new. Paint perfect with the exception of a minor parking lot ding. V-6 has the power and performance of a V-8, which probably explains gas milage not up to par with others in its class. Beefy and robust suspension and driveline, but rides like a car. No rattles or squeaks, tight as a drum.

This Car looks, handles and feels great and in 2001 it was more powerful than 2001 Toyota 4Runner and more stylish. Engine got boosted to 240HP over very weak 168HP 3.3 liter. With that came a lots of MAF, O2,Crank position sensor failures. Use of premium fuel is more than recommended. Weak transmission and aggressive rust on under-body (save yourself and spray it prematurely if you can). Strut tower failures. Realistic fuel economy is 14city and 20 Hwy.

I have had this vehicle for 5 years and since over 102,000 and after owning this one I would buy a Nissan again. No problems up to about 136k but I take responsibility for the major problems that could of been prevented with good preventative maintenance. The car has 141,800+ miles and has been through CA and driven from CA to NM and to few destinations in NM. I trust this vehicle to roll with me anywhere and I will even drive my family around in it. It also survived several big accidents with minimal cost and big damage. One big problem is the stock cd changer, no problem swapping out for aftermarket radio

I'm researching my Pathfinder and had to jump in with my review. Nissan did extremely right by this vehicle and gave every owner what they paid for including this meticulous driver. My pathfinder has been virtually maintenance free on the replacement repairs but I maintain it in OCD style. I rated the MPG a little higher than most because you have to take into consideration the high performance motor powering it and this is why I purchased it. Never has a vehicle satisfied Me, with the exception of our G35, as this one.In a world of MPG crazed, gutless vehicles, I'll take my Pathy and pay for it all day. Do your own research and drive a few as I did and you will agree.

I have had my Pathfinder for 3 years now bought it my Jr. Year of High school with 178,xxx miles on it. I'm now in my second year of college with 224,xxx miles on it. All I've had to do is just some routine work on it, (oil changes, headlights, tires, brakes etc.) and a a few major jobs (muffler, shocks/struts, wheel bearings, and some rust). I got into an accident with it and am working on fixing the front end up but the engine is still fine an trucking along really well. I love this car and would recommend it to anyone. There are a few minor repairs here and there that you need to keep up with these cars but they are defiantly worth the money you put into them. I've put this car through a lot with work, mud, and snow, she keeps on trucking through anything she goes through. It does really well off road and on trails that are hard for most other SUV's. 2001 Pathfinders hold their weight and keep trucking along with everything they go through.

I bought my 01 Pathfinder in 04 with 39,000 miles on it. I now have almost 113,000 miles. First let me say that I love the engine. It rev's quick and has the power of a small v8. Overall it is holding up well but I've had some issues. They are: 1 - 2 mass air flow sensors have crapped (when this goes the vehicle goes into safe mode and rev past 2000 rmp) 2 - 1 O2 sensor 3 - the drivers power seat has stopped going back and forth (i'm living with it as it stuck in my position) 4 - the stock Clarion 6 disk changer stinks. I replaced it with aftermarket single disk unit. (I will never buy Clarion) 5 - Rear defroster only defrosts half the window. 6 - tranny leak that went away.

Unreliable Car & Expensive Repairs

Our second Pathfinder. All reg maint done at dealership. Had to replace O2 sensors at 34000 miles, and second one at 52000. At 61000, dealership said I had a bad catalytic converter and since we had just passed (by two weeks) the 8 year ownership mark, they refused to fix it. First two repairs were $700 each, cat converter estimate is $1000. Have had engine knock for 2 years that dealership couldn't isolate/repair. Knowing that the sensors had gone out, and there was an engine knock, they should have checked cat converter. We will fix this, sell it, and go back to buying Toyotas.

This is my second Pathfinder. They are nice looking vehicles and fun to drive. Poor mileage. My son has my 97 and still running great with 157K and using no oil. I now have 123K on my 2001 and is running well except for ongoing check engine light problems that no one seems to be able to fix. The check engine light has been on continuously for 4 years now. I've had O2 sensors, mass air flow sensors, cat converters, coils, etc.. This is frustrating! With all the problems of this kind listed in these reviews, why has this not been a recall?

Car has 168k ish has not ever left me or my family stranded. Only time it broke down was for normal car stuff like battery and starter. Been to Nashville and Maryland several times never had any issue. Great starter or daily driver vehicle great off road. Gas mileage isn’t really that good but what do you expect from a powerful v6 4wd old suv. Engine and drivetrain maintenance is not bad at all. Won’t regret purchasing this vehicle.

After 7 years of owning the pathfinder (60,000 miles), here is an accurate assessment. Despite 3,000 mi oil changes, there have been numerous mechanical issues/failures (i.e., ignition coils, front springs, air cond, exhaust sys). After reviewing my old bills, I was spending 1500-2000 dollars a year on it at the dealership. I am truly disappointed in Nissan. MY LAST ONE EVER. There quality control is terrible. I thought Renault would correct that, however, it has gotten worse.

This is my third Pathfinder. The first - a 1996 was very nice, but alittle plain in interior aspects for the purchase price. The next, a 2000 was better in that aspect; but after a traffic accident which totaled it, a 2001 Pathfinder was bought to replace it. Except for the weak bumper system, the SUV, in my opinion, is more elegant than most others & handles pretty well in most weather; need to watch for ice etc. since the SUV is larger, I find that it wants to slide more easily. Gas mileage needs to be worked with; about 15 miles per gallon highway. Interior noise can be high - something that I would think would be better in a vehicle like this; wind & tire/road noise especially.

The Pathfinder is an easy driving vehicle; handles well on the road, including in turns (better than anything else we test drove). Going up into mountains and canyons, towing a SeaDoo (about 1,000 pounds), camping "stuff" on the top and inside the car, is no problem. Plenty of spare energy and torque. The Pathfinder comes with a lot of standard items that are GOOD; i.e. disk changer and sound system, running boards, tow setup, extra 12V plugs, etc.

Be prepared to cough up some money for gas, but other than that, my Pathfinder has given me very very few problems. It is an absolute tank for a small SUV and can handle just about anything (it is a wonderful winter car - never gotten stuck even in almost 2 feet of snow in my neighborhood roads). Had a couple ignition coils get old and cause some intermittent misfiring, clunks from old tie rods and ball joints, and some old CV axles (one with a torn boot), but this is all just your common wear and tear on a daily vehicle. The ride comfort is unbelievable for how heavily built it is (not quite as good as luxury, but still very comfortable). It is fairly primitive in terms of technology, but that might be a plus for some (me included) as there really isn't anything too advanced. My mom bought it about 10 years ago and I just bought it from her a few months ago - it has given us absolutely 0 major problems. Any repairs needed were common and ones you'd need to get on any car. Absolutely wonderful car, but again, be prepared to pay for some gas ;)

afte 3 of these babies, it's time to move on.......big step down from the 1997 that I had.......the 1997 was bulletproof....yeah it lacked a few ponies, but it was perfect for what the vehicle was intended to do....the extra power has negatively affected it's offroad capabilities and the build quality has taken a dive...no wheel shake like others have had, but at 27K this thing feels like it's going to fall apart....lousy gas mileage and forced to usepremium to boot........ oh well, they killed a good vehicle

I am very dissapoinded in my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE. I traded a 97 GMC Jimmy, and I am sorry I did. On the Nissan, the exhaust system gave out, a coil burnt out, all four O2 sensors have been replaced, and the check engine light will not stay off. I even changed the spark plugs, that did not solve the check engine problem. This vehicle has failed inspection two of the three years I have owned it, and I service it by the book! The gas mileage is awfull ( I do 55 to save fuel) and it still costs $70 dollars a week to fill it! Below 35 degrees, the windows will not roll up without me pushing on them, and below 10 forget it. I will never buy a Nissan again.

I've had my '01 4WD SE for a year now and have to say I'm 90% happy with my purchase. The engine is silky smooth but does suck down the premium gas. Power is great as is the storage capacity. This is my first SUV so I can't really compare, but I do know it rides very nice. I opted for the 5- speed and still belive it's more fun to drive. The power windows started squealing but it was fixed under warranty, as was the O2 sensor.

At 60K miles, this vehicle is amazingly problematic. We have taken good care of it, but I have lost track of all the electrical problems. I will try to recount them: - The ignition won't come on reliably. I drove it to work today and when I tried to go to lunch it would not start. I was stuck with a buck and a vending machine. - Rear window won't roll up from front switch. - Gear shifter won't budge from park when applying the brake. - Engine light keeps coming on because of the electronic fuel injection controls (bad connector).

Ive had 4 nissan pathfinders in my life. (#1 totalled from behind but i was fine. 2 leased. 3 reposessed. #4 after getting my {non-permissible content removed] together is still in my driveway next to my infinity qx4, which is just another nissan pathfinder underneath a fancier shell). I guess that makes 5 techinally. In my opinion they are the most reliable suv's ever built. Either that or ive just been incredibly lucky lol. Ive never had to do anything but regular maintenance. And they just look good. Im particularly fond of, and most familiar with the 1999.5 through 2004 models. I also like the newer body style all the way until about 2012. When they changed the look again they completely lost me. Not a fan of how they look now. All in all though, based on my frame of reference I give the nissan pathfinder 5 out of 5 stars.

I've had my 2001 Pathfinder LE for quite a while now. I have not had any truly mechanical issues during this time so have to say that it's been pretty good. As with several other reviewers, I've seen the following issues: 1. Engine, transmission, drive shaft sensors have all been replaced 2. The Bose in-dash 6-disc changer (made by Clarion by the way) gave me the Err messages at about 3 years in or 40K. Had to replace it with an after market unit. 3. The interior durability is VERY poor. I've replaced the driver side power seat motor/rails. 4. Today, I'm going to be paying about $700 for some A/C repairs. All in all, it's just been OK. My 1999 Maxima was rock solid but was pre-Goshen..

This was my second Pathfinder after having a 1992. Not the same company anymore. Corporate does not stand by their product. Exhaust broke at the flange which is common I'm told after just 4 years! Corporate would not pick up any of the cost and I'm stuck with a $850 service bill. O2 sensors and check end light is a nightmare. Rims do not make a good seal on the tires. Faulty struts on this year model. Bose cd changer broke twice.

We bought the Pathfinder after owning a GMC Yukon thinking "this will be more sporty and get better gas mileage." We were right about the sportiness part of SUV but found the utility lacking because of the small size and the gas mileage being actually worse than the larger Yukon/Tahoe. It is a nice vehicle with comfortable leather front seats, but the backseat is horrible and really only fit for kids. I guess it's all relative to what a person's needs are so if the size is not an issue then I would recommend this as a good vehicle to have. We've kept it for 8 years so it wasn't too bad of an experience. Replaced oxygen sensor with Maxima sensor for 20% of the pathfinder price 3 yrs ago.

I bought my Pathfinder used 5 years ago- it was love at first test drive. I do admit I baby my cars, but it's handled 6 hour road trips like a breeze. I've also towed my husband's Honda Accord short distances when it broke down. This thing is a tank. I've only ever had minor O2 sensor problems as far as engine problems go, but we bought the platinum warranty & everything's been covered. Unfortunately I'm trading it in- expecting baby #3 and 3 carseats just won't fit!

I replaced my 1997 GMC Yukon with my 2001 Pathfinder SE. I got it used with 42,000 miles and now I have 96,000 on it. I use it for daily commuting and deer hunting. It goes off-road like a mountain goat. It is much smaller than the Yukon but handles all my hunting stuff pretty well (I have a hitch haul for the deer). It rides smoothly on the highway and handles well. My only disappointment has been the unreliability of the sensors. It has 3 oxygen sensors, and I have replaced each one ($350 a pop). The mass flow sensor also went out ($550). Fairly bullet-proof other than that. I intend to keep it for the foreseeable future.

I purchased with 33k and I'm now at 156k with no major problems. The car runs like the day I purchased and is extremely comfortable. I will say it's not great for tall people. All my brothers and my husband are at or over 6' 2" and their heads are skimming the roof. My cd player died about 6 mo ago but I still have the tape and radio (and a 2 year old so when do I listen to my own music anyway?). I don't complain about the mileage either. What do you expect for a truck? I will say this: my last long highway trip I did get 20 mpg (for the 2nd time) but usually I'm at 17+ around town. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I have to buy a replacement!

I purchased this vehicle when my child was 2 years-old, and now I am teaching her to drive it. Over the years, it has been dependable with only minor repairs needed for normal wear and tear due to the age of the vehicle. It's still in pretty good condition after all these years!

If you want a pathfinder make sure it is post 2001 so you get the awesome engine. I was used to the performance of my maxima and doubted the pathfinder until I drove a 2001, WOW! I would like a nicer interior and better placement of the bose sound speakers, but the performance and handling are too good to complain about. I battled between this and the 4runner for a long time, I made the right decision, this car is flat out sweet!

Bought this SUv new just before the 2002 came out. The engine is som much better than previous years. I had the same CD problems as mentioned in other reviews. I argued with the dealership for over a month and they finally got Nissan to warranty it. That was about 50K miles ago and no problems. Other than tires and one replacement of front brakes I have done nothing to this vehicle. I am still on my original rear brakes at 117K miles. I just got rear ended 2 weeks ago at nearly 40 mph and had no injuries and only minor back pain. The flip side is the bumper pushed the frame and I think it is totaled but I guess that is what it is supposed to do to prevent injuries. Great Car!!!!

Overall this truck is very solid and reliable. I would have appreciated a suspension that could withstand more rear weight and higher ground clearance. Power is great for this mid- size truck but you also pay for it at the gas pumps. Great 4WD system, have taken it off roading a few times with no problems. Been in service to replace the front power window motor and a few problems with sunroof wind noise and mis-alignment.

I just put a new battery in it. Got a factory Bose sound system w/5 CD changer/step up rails. Pulls anything & will climb walls in 4L with the right tires. Just turned 190K miles on it. This is the baddest ass 4x4 on/off road machine I've ever owned. Takes it all and keeps on giving. power, torque, yet a smooth highway drive. I'll never get rid of it.

I don't mind the typical 14MPG because the Finder of Paths makes it worth it. I live where the snow comes heavy from Nov-Feb (sometimes into April), so the heavy Pathfinder and its hardcore 4WD make driving in six or more inches of snow less difficult, and on the roads I know well, downright fun. The interior is flexible and can hold a very good amount of stuff. The engine sounds great and runs very well and has just enough power for a vehicle this size. I'm glad I didnt get the 1999 with the 3.3 litre engine. I have, however, had problems with my stock stereo and the exhaust fell apart at 79,000 miles (consider the snow/salt where I live, though).

This is the best riding of all mid? size SUV's. Handles fair, plenty of power, and very comfortable seating. Short on luggage capacity, and light on build quality, it is nonetheless the best of a dying breed of 5 passenger (really 4) SUV's. Transmission and window operation are its biggest quirks. The Automatic likes to upshift at inapropriat times and in my estimation is dangerous.

When I bought my Pathfinder, I felt on top of the world. It felt like a luxury car, but still gave me the height and capacity of an SUV. I don't use it for any heavyduty work, but I have been so glad to have it when moving furniture, kids, and friends around. It's fun to have friends get in and say, "Wow, this is really nice!" Not to mention, the leather seats are beautiful. I only have 2 complaints: the turn radius is pretty big--it's tought to make u- turns, and the rear door is really heavy! Otherwise, it's perfect.

The Pathfinder is great except for the 3 oxygen sensors and the $700 instrument cluster that Nissan says isn't a defect but hasn't worked right from the first day.

I bought my LE used with 24K. This is the most functional car/truck I've ever owned and the reliability is so far equal to my experience with Camrey's and Maxima's. I now have 55K and the only issue I have is with the Bose stereo. The CD/cassette function quit working at around 45K. Otherwise the reliability has been flawless. It hauls my stuff, my kids, and my trailer in all seasons and never lets me down. I test drove every conceivable competitor and for my needs this SUV had the right combination of power, space, torque, comfort, and handling. Very happy with my decision.

I purchased my Nissan SEV6 a year ago. Overall a nice vehicle, but has been in the shop more often for sqeaks & rattles and oil consuption. The power is great! it's about time. On quality, as you know Nissan has been in debt for several years now and they have worked hard on the engineering side to make it a better/less costly vehicle to manufactur. Quality difinatly went down-hill. Did you know that Nissan has the fastest assembly-line in the world! It was in USA Today. The total manufacturing process is less than a day per car/truck. The number of consumer complaints hit an all time high for Nissan, especially on the Extera.

Bought the car because my buddy has a '99 with 130K miles and his still looks runs and looks like new. Mine has 77K on it now and seems designed and built to last. Only regular maintenance so far. The engine is awesome and puts others to shame with it's smooth power and passing ability. The interior carpet seems to be the only thing that isn't really up to the rugged standards of the rest of the vehicle.

Love The Engine - Hate The Manufacturer

25 months and 60K+ miles. Love that Nissan engine. But rattling windows, turbo sensor problem on trans, 2 oxygen sensors, and 7 trips to the dealership to sort all this out have really soured the experience. The selling dealership provided poor service – but I have found another dealer who has been just fantastic. I was hoping to get 200K miles from this vehicle…but I do not foresee that. Thank goodness I got an extended warranty from Nissan. Looking to replace it now. Where is that “great reliability reputation” when you need it. My dealings with Nissan have been very unsatisfactory, especially on an I30 I also own (dealer problem – car’s great).

I love the vehicle but I hate pulling up to the pumps these days. The Bose 6 cd stereo is fabulous and it is a true pleasure to drive, my only complaint is the fuel consumption. The tires that come with the vehicle suck big time though, go out and get some new rubber, $2.00 tires on a 36000 vehicle just don't cut it

Steering Shutter/Load Capacity

I just dumped my 01 Pathfinder for a Ford Explorer. Anyone buying this truck should know that it's more a sports car on stilts than an SUV. With a 1,000 pound load (including passengers), it's bottomed out...no shock absorbtion at all. Additionally, I went through 2 sets of tires and 14 service visits to fix a steering wheel shutter that begins at 60 and never goes away. It's still there after 45,000 miles and Nissan can't/won't fix it. RECOMMENDATION - Take it on the highway b4 you buy it! Don't get stuck with one like I had. Other than that, a very quick, fun to drive, reliable truck....but not worth the BS.

I bought this after taking a small Toyota to more than 150K miles with no troubles. Like the size, power, interior features and just about everything about the car. But I've had TERRIBLE engine troubles -- all relating to overheating. I've had the radiator replace 3 times, valves, hoses, you name it replaced at multiple dealerships in multiple states (not fun when a car breaks down on a vacation) and no one can seem to fix the problem. As I type this, it's in the shop for at least the 6th time for overheating. Rental car guy in the service area says he sees '01 Pathfinders come through ALL the time. Wish it had the reliability of my old Toyota.

Original owner. 147k miles. Engine/tranny/drivetrain no problems at all. This truck has been in 6 accidents (none my fault) always kept me uninjured and today has no rattles or leaks - it's as good as new. Have driven since 60k with check engine light on, no problems. Cd player has gone out twice. Everything else in excellent shape, great owner experience. Highway gas mileage really varies with speed. Keep it 65 and can get 21 mpg. Over 75 and it's 17.

I bought it with 87,000 miles and did all the due diligence with a weekend test drive, private mechanic checkout and carfax. Vehicle was a 1-owner trade and exceptionally clean. Nothing but a disappointment. Cat converters, O2 sensor issues, mass air flow, tie rod ends and wheel bearings were replaced a year later. CD changer doesn't work, bad o-ring oil seals, overheats in hot weather due to an air pocket in the cooling system the dealer couldn't even clear out, windows move slowly, transmission slips in cold weather. Looks like the exhaust resonator I put on is its 3rd one. Fan amplifier control module burned out. Left side sits a bit low so I suspect a bad strut.

Although i like the way they build the car exterior and interior wise, i do not like the way they have so much problems. When i bought the car in 2001 to a total of 42,433 grand, i though i will get a quality vehicle, i was wrong. I bought the state of the line entertainment system, lo jack and a push bar, all have failed me. My BOSE 6 CD changer doesn't work, keeps on getting the error "err2" which means disk stuck, push bar is poor quality and the lo jack doesn't work. I though i would get a good car but this car breaking down every time. replaced the windshield washer motors 8 times and still doesn't work and the step bar is corroded and the transmission is going only at 52343. Do not buy
