4th Pathfinder, still love them

2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE 4WD 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 4A)

This is my 4th, starting with a 92, had 200k when I sold it, the other 2 were killed by stupid drivers, the latest has been great. The only major issue I have had is when 2 of my injectors failed, it took a while to find the problem but when the dealership mechanic got it he found it right away. Other than that it has been a solid performing vehicle. I use mine for work and family so it is high miles, currently at 180k but it looks and drives like a much newer vehicle. I can see where Nissan has skimped over the years with quality of the interior materials but with the 01 it appeared to come back a bit. Power is perfect for its size. For its age and what it is I have no complaints.

Fun, Reliability and Luxury in One

The 2001 Nissan Pathfinder is a great choice for SUV lovers who demand only the best, but refuse to pay $50,000 for another manufacturer. I've not had any problems with this vehicle whether it be mechanical or cosmetic. The auto 4WD feature performs well in adverse conditions. Although it is a V6, it is a powerful 240-hp V6 that I've used to pull a Ford extended cab pick-up, with a trailer attached and loaded, up a muddy incline. The interior features are very nice in the LE model and as a person who is 6'3" tall, I have virtually no problem with legroom or headroom.

Still Modern & Reliable after 10 years

We purchased a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE brand new in 2000 and after almost 10 years it's still reliable, fun, and modern-looking. For an SUV it gets decent gad mileage. It's very easy and fun to drive and rides smoothly. We've had a few problems over the years, but it's held up pretty well. The leather interior is still in good shape and looks nice. The outside has its fair share of dings and scratches but also holds up well. We plan on keeping it for years to come.

It just turned 122,300 with the original clutch, one O2 sensor change, a toasted CD changer (just use my iPod now), and the usual wear and tear repairs. I change oil every 3-4,000 miles and have yet to burn any between changes. With mixed driving I get 16-17 mpg with winter fuel and 18-19 in the summer. Long highway trips typically return 21-22 mpg. As this is my vacation vehicle it sees deep sand every summer and deep snow every winter without any problems incurred. I'm not one to wash and wax too frequently, and the finish has held up really well. There is a 2005 Pathy SE in the family too, and it has run flawlessly thus far.

First time buying a foreign make. Father GM retiree; GM a major account of mine. You would think I would be compelled to purchase under the GM badge or at least remain loyal to the domestics. Plenty of research, discussions and test drives combined with the bitter taste of recent thousand dollar plus visits to GM service centers 'drove' me to explore options. Trailblazer got high marks - nice going GM. Our Pathfinder has been the reward and compensation we had hoped for. A great all-around vehicle. Like your favorite, cozy chair - always familiar and welcoming. Now in the market for another vehicle... HEY BIG THREE!! What do you got to sway me ??

The Best SUV Out There

I have driven many different SUVs and this is by far the best overall vehicle out there. It is the best combination of on-road and off-road capabilities. The new engine in 2001 is FANTASTIC! It is easy to see why the Maxima engine is consistenly rated one of the best and Nissan did a great job converting it for an SUV. The Pathfinder has a very smooth and quiet ride on the road (even at highway speeds) but you can make one turn and it is equally comfortable on demanding off-road situations.

I bought my PF '01 in June 2000 and put 62K+ miles on it. I had one problem with the Heating/AC fan that was fixed by dealer. The CD changer stopped working recently, probably due hot climate in Arizona. The car is a perfect midsize SUV. I have driven it offroad and deep snow (Colorado). I put many highway miles on it too.

Well, the mileage is approaching 15K. So far this SUV is performing very well. The body is still very tight and completely rattle free. Tires noticeably wear fast. Engine runs fine on a regular gas but a premium gas is highly recommended to take advantage of 240 hp.

I bought this Pathfinder on EBAY!!! I have absolutely NO regrets! I love this vehicle! It truly is FUN to drive, and is very responsive to any and all road conditions. This baby ia a great performer. It loves to run, and that will cost you at the gas pump, but if you drive conservatively, which is quite hard to do in this rabbit, the mileage is very respectable.. I got 21mpg driving the PA turnpike on Cruise Control. This is a wonderfully smooth riding SUV that is so tightthat most people who ride in it think it is brand new. The handling and suspension are excellent and the POWER is AWESOME!

If you read the owner's manual, you will see that Premium fuel is defined by the Octane rating. The Premium fuel it recommends is usually the middle grade at most gas stations. This is important to know as my Pathfinder averages only 14.5 mpg. That's my only complaint though, so overall I'm happy.

I had similar issues with it as was repeatedly stated here but have always found a way to get it fixed without spending a lot. Exhaust broke at the flange after just 4 years -- had a new linking pipe welded in for $40. Heat shields around piping rusted off and rattled--ripped them off or clamped tight. Check eng light with inconclusive msgs, O2 or cat conv, after 1 yr engine started knocking and car would hiccup. It was a faulty Mass airflow sensor. I diagnosed it myself with help from a repair manual and an oscilloscope. New one would cost $500, but got a Maxima 3 L for $110, snap in replacement. Need new struts ~$800 - first repair ovr $270(break pds). Rusty side steps/bars are an eye sore.

I have not had the vehicle for long but she is a dream. Previous to purchasing the Pathfinder, I had my sights set on a Montero Sport. I then discovered that the Pathfinder had a much more efficient engine. A 3.5 V6 that puts out 240HP and 265 lb-ft of torque.(although the new models have more power and better fuel economy) It's still a very strong engine for it's class. The Gas bill isn't fun but it's a solid, very safe vehicle and I would very much recommend it.

I bought this vehicle with 15k miles on it and currently have 257k miles logged. Other than the usual wear and tear that all cars through this one has performed fantastically well. Mileage is 17 mpg city/hwy/4wd it doesn't matter. It is comfortable to drive and has plenty of get up and go for freeway driving and great stability when off road. The majority of my driving is highway and this vehicle will cruise at 75-80 and never miss a beat.

The 6 CD changer quit working at 50k miles, and the automatic transmission started giving me trouble at 70k miles. Between 40 and 70 mph, it lurches sometimes and shifts hard into overdrive. The dealer recommended replacing it for $2900, but it's still mostly OK so I'm still driving it without the repair. Now I'm at 80k miles. I've been very pleased with the power. Rear passengers sometimes complain about the ride, but as the driver I love it. Very good sound system. I get 17 mpg overall with the 3.5 liter V6. One or both front brake rotors warped somewhere along the way, but I brake hard so it may be my fault. Other than these problems it's been completely trouble free.

I traded in my '95 Pathfinder when I saw the commercials in the Summer of 2000 for the new '01 Pathfinder advertising 240 hp. I couldn't be happier. I've got a lead foot, and the Pathfinder easily accomodates. I can easily hang with the V8 Explorers. The in-dash 6 CD changer is great. I've already got 34,000 miles on my truck and my one and only problem with it is the poor choice of tires from the factory - Bridestones. Already replaced them with Michelins due to poor tread life. I regularly take trips of 800+ miles and drive it daily to work 25 miles each way - comfortable no matter what.

Various sensors always seem to be burning out, especially O2 sensors. I've gone thru 5 in the last 2 years. I also had the CD changer replaced 4 times. If you're going to buy one of these get the extended warranty! I wish I had splurged and bought the MDX. At 35,000 I got backed into by a dump truck and it has never ridden right since. Can't really blame the vehicle for this, but after 8 trips you would think the dealer could fix the horrible vibration. I'll keep this as a beater and buy a fun car to drive.

I just bought the vehicle and I have had several annoying problems. It has 28,000 miles on it and the steering wheel vibrates. I took it back to Nissan and they balanced the tires but it still vibrates. The transmission always seems to "clunk" into gear just after take off. The tranny also slips first thing after a start up. Once it warms up it seems to be fine. I'm thinking of returning this junker. Also the gas pedal too touchy.

This is out second Nissan, first being our trade in, Altima, 140,000 miles and running strong. This SUV is a great vehicle. The engine is very strong and the 4wd system gets us through the snow everytime. It is very solid with a sturdy feel to it. The doors might be a little too heavy, trouble closing first time. If you are mechanically inclined, I advise doing the service's yourself. $$$$ dealerships charge way too much. Plenty of cargo room and the Bose system is fantastic. Great all around SUV.

This vehicle has one big issue: Oxygen sensors! There are four, and they need to be replaced anytime after 50,000 miles. All four have been replaced at a cost of 135 dollars each. Besides that, I love it. Great ride, handling, steering. Great BOSE stereo. Some loose trim around doors, but otherwise good solid build quality. AUTO 4WD is a nice extra on the LE.

I've been impressed with the power and like the smaller size for getting in and out of tight spaces around town. It's also performed well in rough weather. I've towed a number of trailers with it and it will maintain 75 mph on the highway while towing a good load. What can I say, It's great!

It's fun to drive, handles well, has good brakes, and its acceleration is sweet (240HP). Looking back, I should have opted for the navigation system. its reliability has been solid. I had the radiator replaced after the warranty ran out, otherwise it has been very reliable. I would recommend it as a used car purchase.

I've owned this pathfinder since it was new and have had very few problems. The alarm goes off for no reason fairly regularly and the rear latch isn't great...you really have to slam it to make it latch. Other than that all I've done is changed fluids and brake pads. Overall I would say it's the most reliable car I've ever owned and it performs better than any other SUV I've ever driven. The sound system is excellent as well. I don't love the car, but I would advise anyone to get one.

I've still yet to see a 4WD vehicle that surpasses my 2001 LE. The ride is incredibly smooth and carlike, with impressive acceleration. The interior is extremely comfortable and convenient, although the rear seat room is too limited. Gas mileage is rather poor, but what can you expect from an SUV? I have had many people express how impressed they are with my Pathfinder both from a value and luxury standpoint, and I agree - Nissan has made an exceptional vehicle that belongs in the "luxury" category.

So far this vehicle has been a pleasure to own. Only the routine maintenance has been performed so far and I've put 20,000 miles on it. The engine provides plenty of power on tap for any situation, and the car like handling characteristics sometimes makes me forget I'm driving an SUV. My only complaint is that this truck is THIRSTY! My fuel mileage is terrible at about 12 MPG average, and that is compunded by the fact that premium fuel is recommended.

SE model with 5-speed manual feels like a sports car. The SE has stiffer suspension and very little body roll Be aware that the 6 CD Bose system cannot be changed to aftermarket without replacing all of the speakers too. FUEL ECONOMY is os bad that I am considering trading in for an AWD car. My only quality complaint is the paint on the body plastics. chips from rocks lead to huge areas of flaked paint with just hose washing. If fuel was less expensive, I would love the Pathfinder a lot more.

Vehicle is fun to drive, ride is truck- like. Assembly was top-notch, but quality of parts is disappointing. Reliability is dismal, it has a great engine but everything else has been poor quality. Rear suspension problems and failures, electronics (six O2 sensors in 3 years, cd changer died 1 month out of warranty), brakes squeal, leather color flakes off, you name it. Weaknesses: It feels heavy on the steering when your driving, which tends to wear you down on a long trip. The memory seat tends to lose its memory from time to time. I tend to get about 17 mpg combined city and highway with regular unleaded and about 19 mpg with super, also it has a lot more pep. Over all I'm very pleased with the Pathfinder. I have pulled a 2500 lb. boat and a 16' trailer with a variety of cargo without ever needing more power.I plan to keep the Pathfinder.

The reason I purchased the Pathfinder was that it had the best acceleration of all of the other SUV's I test-drove. Although I enjoy my Pathfinder, I miss the feeling of driving my old sports car. If I had a family, this would be the best thing to have if I was limited to buying an SUV or mini-van.

I can't say enough good things about our 2001 Pathfinder. We were skeptical trading in a 1999 4Runner. This pathfinder Wins HANDS DOWN. Safe, nimble handling, much better gas mileage than the Toyota. We Just Love it. Two kids in car seats rinding in the back seat now, Golden Retriever in the way back. Two Kayaks on the roof. The Power and Handling are key. Great Feel for the road. The reliability is BULLETPROOF. My husband is on his 3rd Maxima and he prefers to drive the Pathfinder AKA the "4WD Maxima" Cheap Gas does not affect the power.

My '01 pathfinder was the best investment I ever made. My kids and wife love the comfort. I've had this car for 8 years now, and the only problem with it was the spoiler had to be replaced in '07. Otherwise, it was the best car EVER!!!!!!! It has a lot of pep in the engine. It acts like a truck, practically is a truck, but the amount of power in the engine makes it act like a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. This is a great choice for a family car. Extremely comfortable, reliability is great, and my only complaint is gas mileage.

With 29,100 miles and 2.5 years, my Nissan Pathfinder has been just wonderful. Its handling is outstanding, great power, simply a joy to ride. Has handled "blizzard of 2003" in Washington D.C. with no problems. The only problem I have had was with the CD-changer (had to be replaced)

I bought the 2001 Pathfinder LE when it first came out in April 2000. Wish I would have waited a little while until the full-time 4WD was available. But overall I am rather happy with the vehicle. Just make sure you get the extended warranty from Nissan. The standard 3yr/36,000 warranty expires quickly. I have 48,000 miles and have used the extended warranty 3 times already in the past 12,000 miles (for emissions sensors and a leaking wheel cylinder) so it was well worth the cost.

My wife and I did extensive research online for reliability data, value, etc for the best used SUV. We narrowed our choices down to the Pathfinder (orQX4), the Highlander, and the MDX. After driving all of these vehicles, we decided the Pathfinder was by far the best deal. We couldn't be happier. The vehicle drives great and has fantastic acceleration. The navigation system has reliably taken us straight to each requested destination, and the entertainment system keeps my 2 year old happy (he now insists we take this vehicle everywhere). This is the 5th Nissan I've owned, so I know reliability will be outstanding.
