I have 226,000 miles on my Maxima, and wouldn't hesitate to go on a road trip in it right now. The need for the catalytic converter to be replaced is about the most expensive thing I've experienced, which doesn't affect the performance of car, just satisfying emissions needs. Otherwise just a radiator, alternator, shocks/struts and starter needed replacement after 100,000 miles which is to be expected for a 13year old car. It starts and runs no problem, All my Nissan's have been good reliable vehicles.

WONDERFUL car! I bought it used in July, 2003 after literally months & months of research. You may not believe me, but I now have almost 170,000 miles on it, and there is NOT EVEN ONE RATTLE while driving! Its computer chip went out at about 150,000 miles, but I found a good used one online for about $250. And that is the only time it did not fire up and go. It has been extraordinarily reliable. Had to get seat covers for the leather seats, but the Texas sun where I live eats up leather seats on any car. I replaced the driver's seat at about 140,000 miles because two of the power motors in it went out, and it was less expensive to replace the whole seat with a used one from a salvage yard than replace the motors in the original. Factory Bose stereo system w/ subwoofer still is crisp & LOUD w/ no distortion. I get 23-27 mpg depending on the amount of city/highway driving I do, and it still does not burn one drop of oil between changes. Power seats are adjustable every way imaginable, & those front seats are more comfortable than most living room furniture, no kidding. Has pass-through from truck to back seats. This is far and away the best vehicle I have ever owned, and I have been through seven other foreign & domestic cars & trucks before I was lucky enough to find this one. Test drove a Chrysler 300M right before test driving the Maxima, and the American vehicle was a joke, absolute junk, compared to this one. I remember saying to my son at the time, "This car is amazing. You just THINK what you want it to do and it does it." I honestly expect to get 250,000-300,000 miles out of it, and I highly recommend this model year and other Maxima model years without any reservations whatsoever. Just a wonderful, wonderful vehicle!

First purchased my certified pre-owned Nissan Maxima in 2008 with 62,000 miles. I currently have over 120,000 miles on the car and is still reliable. The car is not as fun to drive as a BMW 3 series, but has been very affordable to maintain. Most of the repairs I have had done is wear and tear items. Brakes, rotors, exhaust, radiator, tires. Engine and transmission are utterly brilliant. Tip top shape and are extremely quiet. The car does have a few problems: service engine soon light has a faultily sensor, failing speed sensors cause the TCS to come on and off, and the BOSE subwoofer shorts out sometimes. Also, leather rips due to heated seats.

Bought my 2001 Nissan Maxima in Dec 2003 and it has been a great car! Love the way it handles. It's roomy and very comfortable. It now has 194k miles and still going strong. Only regular maintenance done over the 10 years I've owned the car. When I sell this one, I hope to get another Maxima.

I bought this car with 165k on it and 10000 later if still runes like a dream and drives better then a lot of new cars out there. Yes I said new. Of course with it being older and me being the third owner of it has its quirks but thisnt as many as you expect and repaires are cheap. Some Ive seen people say its expensive to maintain. You gotta know where to go. Ive had to replace the Iac (idle air control) and the alternater and soon the catalyst converter. But one thing this car is the best at is turning over its hella reliable. When my alternator went I was an hour out where is lived visiting a friend and it got me home safe and sound. The styling isn't for everyone but Im in love with it. the interior of the car is nice done and beautiful quality, the found system rocks awesome after all these years and I have no need to get another since I love Bose products. the acceleration is one thing to be careful cause it could get you into trouble. Luckily never gotten a speeding ticket in my max. Overall is recommend anyone who wants the underdog classic sports sedan.

This is my 4th Maxima and I absolutely love this car. I've had it 4 and a half years now. The car rides smooth and quiet. It has a strong 227 Hp engine, the same one found in the 2001 Infinity I30. 4900 miles on it and still performs like new. No problems to report. All I've done to this car is replaced the tires when needed. The reliability of this car is excellent. This is exactly why I buy Maximas and nothing else, it's the best car for the money. I'm about to buy a 2006 Maxima. I've received many great offers on my car to sell.

Since I bought the car off lease have had a series of problems. Catalytic converter went bad, Abs sensor went bad, exhaust pipe went bad, CV joints had to be replaced. Had to invest too much money fixing the car. Will never buy a Nissan product again. Their cars have a nice look but are not reliable.

This model is told to be the best maxima made due to the body style as well as the engine and transmission found on these models. Its a Very fun drive lots of power and stylish than most cars you may find during this era i received my Nissan maxima as a graduation gift from my dad he had it at it prime, i borrowed it once or twice on a night on the town before owning the vehicle myself The car did have many sensor issues my dad must of replaced all of the oxygen sensors, as well as replaced the alternator by the time i received the car. Upon receiving the car it had 80000 miles on it two years with the vehicle im currently going on 94k the car has had many repairs done to it usual wear and tear. i put about 4,000 dollars into the vehicle with new brakes, rotors, back calipers, tires, struts, new front transmission mount along with a radiator, muffler, new headlights, spark plugs, a new battery as well as had to change speed and knock sensor for it to pass inspection. The wiring which connects the radio was so corroded i had to fix the connection that connected the radio to the battery, but these issues are something you can expect from 15 year old car. Even though the car is a little long in the tooth she still runs great in the city or highway. Especially on road trips there is minimal blind spots when changing lanes, as well as enough power for you to move in and out of traffic. Pretty strong in the snow but it not awd so you can get stuck if your not careful. This car can hold its own against a 2016 Honda civic and gave it a run for its money. This car is notorious for holes in the exhaust, as well as rust near the back right tire, and to give you sensor issues sometimes they go away but sometimes they don't. These cars can last a long time if you put love into them by investing your time, money, and willing to get a little dirty to fix some of the problems yourself. The resale value is very good considering the age and I'm confident that i can get 3,000-4,000 dollars especially since i have been offered that price now for it. This car would be a great first car.

Contrary to many of the reviews, my 2001 Nissan Maxima was not that good. I had it for about 4 months before I began to experience suspension problems. So, I contacted Corporate Nissan. Basically they slapped me in the face and denied any responsibility - so I filed for arbitration with a third party. In addition, Nissan does not thoroughly stand behind its products and craftsmanship from their mechanics. I will never own a Nissan and neither will anyone I know. I am going to go back to Acura/Honda were service and quality are of a higher priority than just selling a car to make money.

I bought my 2001 GLE from a dealer in Minnesota. I bought the car with 113,000 miles for $10,600. This car IS AMAZING!! This car drives like a porsche, and best of all, its affordable. You get a lot of bang for your buck with the 222-horse engine, and the features of this car. The engine is very quiet, in fact you can hear the tires over the engine. The bose 200 watt system is also a great bonus to this car. If you are in the market for a used sedan, the maxima is the only choice. Its powerful, classy, comfortable, and safe. I give this car 2 thumbs WAY UP!!

I bought my 01 Maxima SE with every available option ($31,500 sticker) from the original owner in 2007 with 106k miles on it. It just rolled over to 145k miles and I know it would run to 200k easily. Things I love about this car are the sports-sedan styling, the extremely powerful and silky V6, it's good interior space, & high-quality fit and finish. My car has been very reliable and the engine and tranny are great. To date, I've had to fix a rear ABS wheel sensor, the catalytic converter, new alternator, and a hinge and spring for the fuel door rusted off. It is also starting to rust where the rear plastic bumper meets the metal body frame on both sides of the car, leaving orange-ish stains

falling apart at 80K mi

The car was more or less fine till it got close to 80K mi. The car never came close to the sticker mi/gl - 23 mi/gl at best. After warranty ended (at 36K) - I replaced MAF, rear brake caliper, alternator, battery, all ignition coils, 1 O2 sensor, 2 sets of tires. I've been battling with check engine light for two months now... $800 later it's still on. Dealership replaces one part after another with no end in sight. Now dealership wants $2,000 more to replace both catalytic converters, refuses to do it under emission warranty. I called Nissan Corp.- they don't want to help either. So much for customer service and loyalty. Oh well, last Nissan that my family will ever buy!

My car has 260,000 miles today. Routine maintenance and second clutch. Nothing major. Four door dings looks near new and still runs like new. I consider selling it but then reconsider. Bought it new. I knew I couldn't afford it; but it was an awesome nice car I felt I didn't deserve. Empire Lakewood Nissan helped make it affordable. A year later brought Mom in and she bought a nice Maxima. She still has hers too and loves the car. .

My husband and I purchased two brand new Nissan Maxima's 2001 Limited Edition cars (made in Japan). After I bought mine, he loved it so much, he bought one. I still have mine and it is an awesome car! I have maintained all regular maintenance & service on it and the items that needed repair (catalytic converter and alternator) were covered under warranty. This is the second Maxima (& 4th Nissan) I've owned and it is very fast, has great pick-up and is still stylish (after 7 years). My husband just traded his car in because he wanted a 4 cylinder and now misses his Maxima. The Bose system has incredible sound, all controls & power items still work, no problems with leather or paint! Buy one!!

Bought this in '11 with 90k....now at 130k. As others have said, I've had several sensor issues, both CATs and a good deal of rust over the rear wheels to deal with. Exhaust system has been completely replaced. Great pickup and handling, and the A/C turns it into a meat locker in the summer. Pretty good deal at $6000, 6 years ago.

Original review 02-14-2003. A very good car, now with 64,000 miles. I dropped my comfort rating from 9 to 8 because I have tired of the firm ride. Economy rating from 9 to 8 because we avg. 24 mpg, down from 27 mpg first 3 years. Quality rating from 10 to 9 - anyone else have peeling paint? I washed the car this week, and paint is coming off the hood in quarter sized pieces - NOT GOOD! We'll see how Nissan stands behind their cars now.

What a blast to drivel. The only things that I would change would be the front-wheel drive (too much torque steer) and a more powerful sub for the somewhat weak BOSE system. I've had no mechanical problems - only routine servicing and a flat. But, my front driver's seat is splitting in a few places. The car's got a big backside, so high speed road handling is not a stable as I'd like. But, it IS a sedan. And, a big one at that. U-turns aren't always made either. But, I got the 20th Anniversary edition, and I love the subtle fascia and body kit extras that come with it. I just wish there was more of a difference between it and the normal SE edition.

Bought SE model, loaded, new in '01. Check engine light and o2 sensors a continuous problem for last 8 years. Dealers stick it to you each time attempted to fix these issues. Finally gave up years ago and just live with. Car now has 200K miles and continue to drive as winter vehicle, but must say the engine has been very solid. Bought a 15" Blizzak tire/wheel package (all four wheels) to replace the 17" Potenzas for winter driving and this car rolls through the bad winters of Upstate New York like 4 wheel drive! Would likely not buy another Nissan vehicle as the frequent warning lights on the dash are just a pain.

Purchased new w/Infinity all-leather interior. 130K miles. I take good care of it. Still looks great w/a few minor paint touch-ups. Wonderful car for the S.W. and high-speed touring. Good power/weight ratio. 21 mpg city, 28 highway at 80+mph. Unmatched visibility for touring and safety. Roomy inside and comfortable rear seat for passengers up to 6' tall. Great driving car with ample power. Good human factors design for driver - everything obvious and handy. Replaced all 4 O2 sensors, starter, radiator and alternator between 105K & 120K miles, front camber kit and rotors are due. Regular maintenance w/synthetic oil. Altogether a great car that's fun to drive w/a lot of good miles left in it.

I know numerous people that love their Maxima, but I'm not one of them. Here's why: 1) CD was bad when purchased and had to be replaced 2) O2 sensors were bad and took 5 trips for the dealer to fix. 3) Paint on front bumper doesn't handle road debris well. Looks like it's peeling and very unsightly. 4) Alternator just replaced at 55K miles (car isn't 3 yrs old yet). Contacted Nissan about covering it (warranty)anyway - they asked a bunch of useless questions to determine if I was worth bothering with and refused to help. 5) SE model tires are very expensive. OEM tires (Michelins) perform bad in moderate rain. I will NEVER buy another Nissan again.

Purchased new in 2001 (built in Japan), low mileage (55k), regular maintenance, well cared for, interior great. In six years, not a single item has failed and have only replaced crappy stock Potenzas tires. New Yoko Avid 4Vs great all season performer. Driving on snow and ice still marginal, but not designed for ice/snow performance. Ergonomics are excellent, cockpit is well designed and comfortable. Bose sounds great. I drive spirited and the 5 speed w/3.0 liter V6 (legendary engine) offers excellent performance and descent fuel economy 22/27. Not a drop of oil in engine compartment. Will need brakes soon and other 60k maintenance. I love this car and will keep it for years. Excellent value.

Bought my GLE in July,'03 with 69,000 miles on it from a Houston dealer for $11,450. No oil used between changes. Lots of adjustments for seats, great lumbar support, like sitting in a fine chair in your home. Bose stereo is just incredible. Gas mileage: 23-27 mpg mostly city, but engine is so responsive it is hard to lay off of it. VERY comfortable and smooth ride with GLE suspension. Good legroom in rear with cupholders all over. Stereo controls on steering wheel a great convenience/safety feature. Auto trans is smooth as can be, no comparison to American cars like my brother's Buick LeSabre and Chrysler 300M. Great car!

Overall, I love my Maxima. It has been a great car over the years. Excellent, sporty performance for the money. I would say for this class of vehicle you couldn't find a better value. Have 133k on mine now, only serious problems have been a failure in the clutch hydraulics and a leaking radiator I recently had to replace. The engine in the Maxima is rock solid, and if you change the oil when you're supposed to it will never fail. Also, get Yokohama tires on this and it'll feel like you're driving a different car.

We have had our Maxima Se since 10/01. It has approximately 18k miles. At 12k miles, we found a crack in the rear spoiler. Nissan would not fix it. It was only covered up to 12k miles. Just this week-09/08/03-the car died and would not start. It had to be towed to the dealer for repair. They still do know what is wrong with it!

If she would, I would gladly trade the maxima for the Acura. The maxima has been nothing but a source of problems. Tire replacement ever 30,000 MI. at a cost of $1000.00. Brakes and rotors replaced at ever 15,000 MI at a cost of 400.00 per wheel set. Wheel bearing failed under 73,000 MI at a cost of approx $400.00 to replace. The company was contacted and didn't stand benind the automobile. This is a bad vehicle and Nissan will not stand behind it.

This car started out ok but just out of warranty a computer module failed and cost about $700 Can. After that we have put thousands of $$ to keep it on the road. It's in the shop now. Another computer item for $1000 incl labor. It was towed into the shop to get this fixed, and this is the second time it had to be towed. Last item it was the alternator $700. The vehicle now has 190,000 km which is quite a bit but did not expect to have get rid of it this soon. I have never had a vehicle as unreliable as this one. I would have to be crazy to ever consider another Nissan product.

this car is the sickest car ive ever driven it plus i added a cold air intake which really makes the car pull off the line as if it needed more power steering and cornering is excellent driving a 2000 accord ex v6 gold (hayat) and i have to say the maxima outperforms it.

Don't Do It

Purchased my Maxima with 33k miles in 2004. Ran great and very reliable until around 2008. The maxima began to barrage me with check engine lights, needed an 02 sensor, brakes, MAF problems, muffler holes, and the list goes on. The car now has 124k miles and it is time to move on. As soon as I get one thing fixed, another thing goes down and I can't keep up with it. The car is very fun to own and I love the look and power of it but I can't keep up with the maintenance. According to the internet, 2001 Maximas are prone to every problem you can think of! Don't buy one!

Awesome car, but i bought it from a bad previous owner who put a tremendous amount of miles on it in the year before i bought it. It needed new rotors, brake pads, belts, & MAF. Eventually it needed 2 o2 sensors, but they were due anyway and are cheap. If you get drilled & slotted rotors, you should have no problems with warping.

I have enjoyed this vehicle and do feel it is a good vehicle for the money. However, I am very upset about the paint job. I have had too many paint chips to count. I expected more out of Nissan.

I bought a new 2001 SE about 18 months ago. It has been a great car to date. The performance, comfort, and styling are great. The bang for the buck is huge. I can't understand why someone would choose an Accord or Camry over this car. I have averaged 23 mpg running regular unleaded, and I have had NO performance problems whatsoever. I did have to get the CD player replaced b/c it never worked. Additionally, I just replaced the stock tires at 27k. Overall, I would highly recommend this car to anybody.

Purchased at 73,000 miles and driven 4,000 in 4 months during one of the harshest winter in Chicago. The car started every time and everything worked great. The engine is very quite and the ride is very comfortable. Fuel economy is worse than expected as it has been consistently getting about 18 MPG in the city but it jumps to 22 MPG on highways. Still very stylish after all these years.

This car is awesome, great styling and amazing performace for a 4-door sedan. But repairs are far more expensive than they should be, and seem to happen more than they should after 100,000 miles. The engine does not have problems, it's still running strong, but other random parts keep breaking frequently.

I bought my '01 Maxima SE used in 2004 with 44,500 miles. Now have 106,000 miles after 4 years of driving it. I replaced the A/C compressor & oxygen sensors soon after purchase. Since then the car has been very dependable and fun to drive. All other costs have been maintenance related (brake pads, tires, etc.) I get 19 mpg local and an impressive 27 mpg hwy driving 65-70 mph with 3 passengers & luggage. I highly recommend this make & model. My 2nd Maxima. My 1st ('95 SE) was hit & totaled at 9 years & 94,000 miles, but was running like a top until then.

I bought this car at 56k miles and have been very pleased. I have taken very good care of the car, all recommended maintenance. I have replaced the alternator at 70K, had a small problem with the front right tire making noise, turns out it was only a slightly uneven wheel, simply put it on the back and it has never maid a noise since. Wish I could have found a 5-speed for the same price/miles. I average 22mpg in town; about 26mpg at 80mph. The ride is a little rough in town, but nothing but comfort at high speeds. Overall a very impressive car.

I've purchased my '01 Maxima SE 5- speed last September and I'm happy to report that nearly 1 year and 14K miles later, absolutely no faults to be found...this car is amazing! I've done nothing but routine maintenance. If I had to nitpick, my gripes are slightly notchy manual shift action and the pain of pulling out the premium gas pump. Although I have run regular and mid-grade fuel on occasion with no ill-effects, Nissan should calibrate their Max to run on 87 or 89 octane, even for a few horsepower penalty. Nevertheless, if this car stays as solid and reliable through the long haul, I'll definately be back for another.
