Nothing like a Maxima.
I bought this car at 56k miles and have been very pleased. I have taken very good care of the car, all recommended maintenance. I have replaced the alternator at 70K, had a small problem with the front right tire making noise, turns out it was only a slightly uneven wheel, simply put it on the back and it has never maid a noise since. Wish I could have found a 5-speed for the same price/miles. I average 22mpg in town; about 26mpg at 80mph. The ride is a little rough in town, but nothing but comfort at high speeds. Overall a very impressive car.
Unbelievable Bang for the Buck
I've purchased my '01 Maxima SE 5- speed last September and I'm happy to report that nearly 1 year and 14K miles later, absolutely no faults to be found...this car is amazing! I've done nothing but routine maintenance. If I had to nitpick, my gripes are slightly notchy manual shift action and the pain of pulling out the premium gas pump. Although I have run regular and mid-grade fuel on occasion with no ill-effects, Nissan should calibrate their Max to run on 87 or 89 octane, even for a few horsepower penalty. Nevertheless, if this car stays as solid and reliable through the long haul, I'll definately be back for another.

Great car
I've had this car for 4 yrs and 4 months. Very few problems and only regular maintenance required. Outstanding reliability, comfort, and performance. I think the styling still holds up today. It's been the best car I have ever owned!
My Maxima
The 01' 20th Anniversary Special Edition is a wonderful vehical inside and out, including the mechanical parts. Nissan builds wonderful cars and the safety features are great. The car rides just as you move the steering wheel and stops on the dime. No hesitations! This is my second Maxima, previously owning a 95'. The bang is not as strong but it drives just as well. I feel extremely safe in Maxima's. The 95' Nissan was my first car, I thought I was in the Indy 500 and should have been dead 3x's. However, have been driving the Maxima saved my life.
Some good some bad
Purchased the car with 62k miles still have it at 118k today. Overall solid car, minus the constant idle problem which no one can find a solution for, coils, and squeaky front end. OH yeah and rear wind noise is wayyy too loud!..other than that fast fun car to drive. Must use premium for maximum performance. And never take the car to the dealership once you are out of warranty.
No More Nissans
Purchased 2001 SE brand new for my wife and absolutely love the car at first - power, comfortable, ample interior space and did I mention 'Power'. For the previous 15 years, we've owned Hondas and Toyotas and guess we were spoiled with their reliabilityr records of these. Starting at 30k we started having problems with the Maxima (O2 sensor, transmission, and Catalytic Converter). These are not your regular $200-$300 problems but more like $900- 1,300 a pop and you would expect these problems at 200+k versus 30-100k. I love the power and styling of Nissans, but I must say I'm going back to the ole' faithful Honda or Toyota for reliability and $$ saves in maintenance.
Best Car I've Ever Owned
This is my second Maxima. I can't say enough good about this car. It has been reliable and fun to drive. The interior and trunk are roomy, and the little conveniences like sunglass holder, spacious console box for CD's,extra backseat drink cup holder and power plug make a real difference on trips. The car's power is a big plus when merging in traffic or handling congested but fast-moving freeway driving. I have been pleasantly surprised by gas mileage.
I'm a mechanic :)
Being a mechanic for Acura I get to drive a great deal of cars, used to work for other car companies and even Nissan- having owned 3 so far- my old 90 SE 5spd Max had 340K miles, I went right for the 01 GXE 5spd with intention of NOT keeping it stock and trying to see how long it will run redlined every chance it gets, even with burning tires right off the dealer lot with 2 miles on the ODO at 63K now its only gotten oil changes and tranny fluid changes-2 so far- Redline MTL90. I autocross this big boat and road race it-its fully modified.
Brakes
Orig. owner of my 01 Max. Love it overall, but have put 3 sets of brakes on it now at 140,000 miles. this last set involved callipers as the rotars were very warped - perhaps due to callipers not releasing fully, wearing them faster. Also needed a speed sensor for the right rear wheel. All for $900. Wondering how other owners were faring with brake issues on their 01'. Still handles well. Great Giddy-up and gets an avg. of 23mpg in the city - around 330 miles to a tank of gas.
Excellent Automobile
This car has been totally reliable for my husband and me in the 2 1/2 years we have owned it, routine maintanence only, no problems whatsoever. This is the second Maxima I have owned and would definitely recommend this car as a solid, reliable and fun vehicle to own. We have two children and they fit in the back just fine, a little tight with two carseats.
2001 Nissan Maxima SE
I purchased this vehicle "used" in 2004. I have loved the performance and styling of the Maxima. Shortly after purchase I needed a 02 sensor and a new catalytic converter. I was lucky to have purchased a pre-owned warranty that covered the problems that would have cost me approx. $1000. I also needed to replace the Bridgestone potenzas that I found to be horrible in the snow. If you plan to buy a car that has 17" rims remember that even the best all season radial tire at (225/17/93V) will be marginal in the snow. I purchased Continental Conti- touring tires at a great price and have put approx. 20K on them with no problems. The 2001 Nissan Maxima SE is a solid choice for the price.
A great built car
I've had the car for about a month now so I havnt really had the chance to experience problems. But I know that the maxima is a great built car because my mother has an infiniti I30.The maxima and the infiniti I30 have the exact same engines and many of the same features and components since infiniti is a branch of nissan. She has plenty of mileage on her car and has experienced almost zero problems. As for the maxima,I love it.It's roomy, fast, and offers many great features. It is one of the best cars I have driven and think it's a well priced car for what you get.It is an all around great car. I definitely recommend this car to anyone.
very luxurious
This is a very smooth riding car and the gle model has a very luxorious interior and absorbs road bumps very well. This is the best car i have owned since a 95 v6 camry. I actually got rid of a 99 grandprix gt for the camry due to problems with the grandprix.
01 Maxima
I would not hesitate buying another Maxima with the experience I have had with my '01. Very solid and sporty car for a family sedan.
Bad paint
I have enjoyed this vehicle and do feel it is a good vehicle for the money. However, I am very upset about the paint job. I have had too many paint chips to count. I expected more out of Nissan.
Excellent
its excellent. The best hassle free vehicle you can find on road.
My First Maxima
Drives great! Love the comfort and controls. Gas mileage is Nice surprise 28-30 mpg. No major problems purchased used with 93K now at 103k miles. Great for long trips, great brakes and fast on freeways.
Best car ever....
Folks, this car drives like a starship. Imagine youself in space manuevering a craft, and thats what driving this Maxima is like. The car has saved my life countless times due to its flexibility and quick response on the road. In essence, the car becomes part of you, it was designed to follow your every command.
Exceptional Used Car.
I bought my '01 Maxima SE used in 2004 with 44,500 miles. Now have 106,000 miles after 4 years of driving it. I replaced the A/C compressor & oxygen sensors soon after purchase. Since then the car has been very dependable and fun to drive. All other costs have been maintenance related (brake pads, tires, etc.) I get 19 mpg local and an impressive 27 mpg hwy driving 65-70 mph with 3 passengers & luggage. I highly recommend this make & model. My 2nd Maxima. My 1st ('95 SE) was hit & totaled at 9 years & 94,000 miles, but was running like a top until then.
Fun but expensive
This car is awesome, great styling and amazing performace for a 4-door sedan. But repairs are far more expensive than they should be, and seem to happen more than they should after 100,000 miles. The engine does not have problems, it's still running strong, but other random parts keep breaking frequently.
Forth Nissan purchase for me
This is the 4th Nissan I've purchased and that first purchase goes all the way back to when they wer called Datsun's. I went once with another vechile line and came back running. If you what a well built car with a manufacter that will satnd behind what they sell stay with the Nissan. Great car to drive, good looking (could make the rear-end look a little more sporty), great service record. And, dosen't cost a fortune to buy.
Great Maxima!
It may not be the cutest thing on wheels but it is r-e-l-i-a-b-l-e! 222 horses really move it around town & country. Toyotas may be a little better, BUT, down in Puerto Rico, Toyota dealers are WAY too prepotent, due to the quality of the product they sell; so I go for the 2nd. best in MY book: NISSAN! Greetings from sunny Puerto Rico! J.A.N.
LP's Review
I am addicted to the Maxima. This is my 5th one, and anytime I have tried to switch to another car, I haven't been happy. I always come back to the Maxima.
Beautiful car
I enjoy my car completely and would reccomend them to anyone looking at a new or used car. This is my 2nd Nissan vehicle and have never been stuck by the side of the road with anything worse than a flat tire.
Gladiator of the Road
For the price you pay for the car, it really makes it worth every penny you paid for the car. The bonus is that you are driving something that is almost in the realm of the 3-series or the C-class. Not too many are out there in this price range that exists. Like the General Maximus (aka Maximas) those can try to ignore its existence, but in the end it will win back its rightful place in the automotive world.
Great value for the money
The Maxima is a great car for the money. The engine is the best - incredibly smooth and revs freely. I'm not as impressed with the auto transmission as it sometimes hesitates and seems tentative when accelerating after coasting at a slow speed(under 20 mph) Not terrible but sometimes annoying. Shifting is silky smooth under hard acceleration above 4000 rpm revs - very impressive. Comfortable cabin. I've never had a maintenance problem. A very well made and fun to drive sedan.
It's been great
Bought new, now 74,000 miles. One service bulletin for tie rod. Paint could be better, chips easily. Creaky front end. Decent mileage on highway. Recently replaced exhaust for about $500. Brakes work great but rotors do not hold up. Will be on 3rd set of fronts next break job. Stiff, sometimes rude ride. I replaced front right speaker last year. Easy to do, ($50). Still fun to drive, even though I have an automatic. Plenty of power for pretty much any situation. Sometimes let 'er rip to 5500 RPMS and the car just flies - never complains. Recently on 3rd set of tires. Went for good set of Bridgestones, all weather. Confident foul weather car. Maybe mine was a good sample. Never let me down.
A front-drive Bimmer
I've always wanted a Maxima and finally found a great deal on a 5sp GXE. obviously the nissan V6 is well known and i can feel all 222hp and 210lbft of torque in any gear. The clutch took awhile to master and the shift throws are a bit long and notchy but the power makes shifting largely optional anyway. Interior build quality could be better in places but the overall design is just right. Interior room and fuel economy are excellent, although the latter is balanced out by the need for 91 octane fuel. Exterior design is unique, though not quite beautiful. After driving 7000 mi, the car now has 52,500 mi and has needed only a reflash of the catalytic converter (covered under warranty).
RPM GLE 2001
Superb Performance with excellent riding comfort. Trouble free start and smooth ride. The Best car in its range
Impressive..
I was incredibly impressed by the car. After driving a fully loaded Sentra, I wanted more. I was very impressed by all the features and power that's available..Both Nissans we already owned before the Maxima have been very reliable, and so far, this is no exception.. even at 42,000 miles.
I'm Sold!
I've had nissan for a while now, all i can say is great car, great power if you need it. You just barley touch the gas peddle and your going the speed limit! ADVICE: dont take out your stock cassette deck for a cd player, the car shop has no clue on how to hook up the radio antenna. If you want a cd in your car buy a cd changer for your trunk. Otherwise great car!
Max Fun
Great driving car, with responsive engine. Load of interior room and nice appointments, including Bose audio system. Handles and brakes well. Would prefer less "plastic feel" of the dash, and rear independent suspension.
RG 1 Maxima
During the 8 years I have owned since new, I have put new brakes once, new tires twice, one new radiator at 150000 miles and now the struts need replacing. If this were a ford focus or whatever it would now be around in this good a condition. Also my actual miles per gallon is city 21 highway 27
Love the maxima!
I am on my 2nd maxima, having had a 1998 model for 3 years, I moved to the 20th anniversary SE model. I've never had a problem mechanically with the car. The car has been reliable through two winters. Dealer service has been top notch. The 2001 SE model is quick and agile. It's roomy (fits my 6'3, 240lbs) and comfortable. The trunk is spacious. The leather seats are very comfortable. The audio system sounds great. The car feels safe and powerful on the road, even at speed. If I were to pick one thing to complain about it's that the moon roof was not optional in the SE trim line and that means a loss of an inch or two of head room - something that matters for me.
Not a Honda in any way shape or form
Bought a fully loaded GLE Meridian edition with every option that was available. Compared to my other car a 2001 Honda Accord EX V6, the Maxima is bigger and more powerful. The Accord on the other hand has been bullet-proof reliable only going back to the dealer for a malfunctioning clock. The Maxima however has had all 6 engine sensors replaced and now I am dealing with the infamous wheel bearing issues. Waiting to find out if the dealer will honor the warranty and cover them. Based on the lack of reliability I would have reservations recommending this car.
Nissan Maxima Ownership
Complete confidence is what I feel each time I crawl under the steering wheel of my Maxima. I have 92,000.+ miles on it, and it is still in superb running condition. The only repairs I've needed to make have been routine, i.e., tires, brakes & battery - that's all. I would always recommend Nissan.
Tough to find a better car for the buck
In my experience the 2001 Nissan Maxima SE is a solidly built car. The ergonomics are right on, and the comfort is there. Performance is where it takes the cake. Try to find another make for around $21000.00 (thats what I paid new), that can outperform this car. Not an easy task.
Awesome
This is my 4th Maxima and definately my favorite. Bought it used (3 years old) and it looks better than some of the new ones. Previous owner took immaculate care of the vehicle. AE rides like an expensive Lexus or Mercedes. Bose sound system is awesome - definately enjoyed by me, but extremely enjoyed by my 16-year son and his music. Friends/co-workers can't stop talking about how lucky I am. Recommend owning any Maxima to anyone, never unsatisfied. Thank you, Nissan....
A ton of fun and bang for the $
My wife and I bought a lease turn in for $17k w/21k miles on it. We could be more pleased and laugh at our friends that by new Accords, J30/35, Camarys and whatevers. It's almost too much fun to drive. Hard to keep under 80mph on the Interstate.
20 th Ann. Max!
All Great and even after 3.5 years.
STYLISH AND AWESOME
I HAVE OWENED 4 MAXIMAS PRIOR TO THE PURCHASE OF 2001. This vehicle unbelievably reliable. The hadling and performance are out of this world. The 2001 body style makes the Maxima a real sports sedan especially with 17 inch wheels. The comfort and cabin space are execllent. This isn't any other vehicle that I would purchase. I plan to keep the 2001 for 10 years.
The top of Nissan and feels like it.
It's the best car for the money. And I drove them all.
Maximum!!!
Bought this garage kept Sterling Mist beauty in Sept 03. Most of the 24,000 miles were highway miles. The sales lady said it was fast and that sparked my interest, naturally! It was and is and I am totally in love with this car. Plenty of power and great gas mileage in spite of the weight of my right foot. The stereo sounds good and the leather interior is super comfy. This car is a dream to drive and great on the highway. Its nimbleness saved our lives one night on the Florida Turnpike. Make sure you tint the windows as this really improves the look. Mine was a "fishbowl" and I had the tint done the day after I bought it. Couldn't be happier with this rig!
It's a Dud!
I bought this car new in 2001 due to it's great handling and performance. Unfortunately, I had no way of knowing how cheap Nissan had gone on the parts. O2 sensors, mass airflow sensors, busted muffler, warped door to the gas tank, electrical system issues...I can go on and on. My advice is to stay away!
To the max
I work within the car industry and drive a great deal of cars from various makes and models ranging from all prices. For the price this car blows away all competition.
Very Nice
Cars are luck. I had a car that was full of problems. But after i sold the car it didnt have any trouble. The car had trouble starting so i called that guy whom i sold it too. He said the card didnt have any trouble after he bought it. it all luck.
Short timer
Love the 222 hp. and the suspension is fantastic. Interior is well laid out, especially convenient are the radio controls on the steering wheel. Chain link drive belt is a plus for reliability. Plenty of room for a family of four (mine).
excellent car all a round
I love this car, I firt had a 1996 maxima, loved it now I've purchased a 2002. Great car, excellent!
Great Buy
I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima GLE. I bought it brand new and havent had any problems except for the driving belts which onl cost $110. Horsepower is great and the car is very respnsinve to the pedal. Overall i give this car two thumbs up.
My Maxima
I bought this car for 9,000 in Jan 2006, it had 80,000 miles and was in exceptional shape, clean engine, clean interior with a couple of superficial tiny scratches. It now has over 104,00 miles on it and this year marked the first time i had to have any work done ....New Alternator, belts & battery, pretty good considering the battery and belts were the originals along with the alternator. Its a great car, rides smooth, can hardly hear the engine, everything still works...a/c, steering wheel audio control and cruise control. The headlamps do tend to cloud & I feel they are a not as bright as they should be.The front passenger window moves up and down extremely slow (Has since i bought it)
