Refined for 2k19

Although the 2020 gets a face lift. The 2019 edition is the best since 2014. Larger brakes, sound deaden insulation, steering improved, among other areas. We own a 2017 5speed Nissan Versa, Mirages closest competitor in its price range. Despite have less horsepower, the Mirage is more refined then the Versa. The Versa also gets a face lift for 2020. The reviews on the Mirage have relatively negative, however, again the 2019 is the best refinement. I average 50 mpg, the 5 speed shifts smooth and once you are comfortable for its power train, it’s para with our Versa. Note: I purchased a 1987 Mitsubishi Montero new, before SUV were all the rage. The Montero was a great off road and highway vehicle. 15 years together and no problems. Mitsubishi is back in action. Consider the Mirage with its excellent value and warranty.

The 'experts' are Wrong

After 95,000 miles on a 2018 five speed purchased new for $9985 in autumn of 2017, I can assure any prospective buyer that the interior noise is not "shocking" as one reviewer claimed, nor does the car wander around the road at highway speeds, nor are all the other negatives by which the so called 'experts' denigrate this car correct. I'm not sure what they expect but I traded a Prius C for this car and by many measures they feel equivalent-except that the Mirage costs $10,000 less. It is fast enough for all legal speeds, comfortable for 2 people, handles everyday driving perfectly well and gets 43-51 mpg depending on outside temperature and type of driving. I average 47 mpg year round in hilly Pennsylvania. It is not at it's best at highway speeds, but it is not meant to be. The 3 cylinder engine has been around in one form or another for decades and is smooth throughout the RPM range, while the manual gear ratios are perfectly matched for the power band. The transmission is 'notchy' at first but smooths out after about 3,000 miles. The radio, heater, and the air conditioning are adequate, if not powerful, and all the interior electronics like rear defroster and window motors have been trouble free. In fact, after 7 years the car has been totally reliable mechanically except for a rattling heat shield that was easily corrected. I replaced the front brakes and rotors at 37,000 miles after they rusted beyond state inspection standards. That seemed a little premature but could be because of winter salt on the roads around here. The brakes were replaced again at about 70,000 miles. I changed the original Dunlop tires at 25,000 miles ( which wore out too quickly I thought) with an economy brand costing only $34 dollars per tire. These too wore out in 25,000 miles so I put on Kumho tires at $55 each. They perform the best of the three brands and last a little longer, but plan on replacing tires every 30,000 miles at least. I have changed the synthetic oil every 7,000 miles, changed the transmission fluid at 50,000 miles and the air filters at 30,000 and 60,000 miles, which is basic maintenance. Last summer at 75,000 miles the engine started using a little oil, maybe 1/2 quart in 3,000 miles, but the engine runs normally and that amount has not changed in 15,000 additional miles, so I'm just driving it for now. At 85,000 miles I changed the accessory belt and brake fluid as preventive maintenance, and a few miles ago I had to change the first driving light bulb-a two minute job once you have the bulbs. The car just reached 95,000 miles so I plan to replace all four brakes and tires this summer, as well as the transmission fluid again. In conclusion, I consider the car with the manual transmission fun to drive-not in a Mazda Miata way- but in a small car easy to zip around way. A Mirage is not the fastest, smoothest, most powerful car on the road but it is not supposed to be. Rather it is a reliable daily driver car with a great warranty at a fantastic price. I have heard that they are discontinuing the Mirage, but finding a used, low mileage, well maintained one for $10,000 or less would be a good deal- One owner in Minnesota obtained over 400,000 miles, so they are durable if taken care of. Test drive this car for yourself- If it is not to your tastes, fine, but do Not be discouraged by the expert reviews. Many people who actually own this car love it. Personally, I bought this car as what mechanics call a "disposable car"-meaning I plan to drive it until it dies so I am not worried about resale value. I do Not work for Mitsubishi nor know anyone who does.

Love the Mirage, It's no race car but with the 5 speed it will get up to freeway speeds pretty quick. I drive twice weekly from Central Wa. to Seattle over Snoqualmie Pass all year round and I avg 40+ Mpg. It Drives excellent year round in the hot summer to the Crazy Snow with no problems. I do put snow tires on in the winter. Would recommend this little beast over any hybrid out there. Almost the same MPG. 1/3 to 1/2 the price and no battery dying after 80,000 miles.

Second update, as requested by Edmunds: We still enjoy the car. Maintenance is cheap, and fuel economy seems to be improving. The improving fuel economy is likely due to us being used to driving the car more efficiently as we are more aware of the cars characteristics. It is super reliable, we are at just shy of 12,000 miles. Update, as requested by Edmunds: Nothing has changed, Still enjoy the car. I am writing this mostly because I am tired of hearing how this car is "underpowered" and slow. No, it is not slow and I do not have issues with acceleration, merging, or passing other vehicles. There are no notable instances where I had issues on launch when driving this car. 0 to 60 does not normally need to happen. It takes turns very well and they do add more sound dampening materials than they did when they made the 2014-2015. Sound dampening was the only thing though that I thought needed to be improved as it was still noisy especially from the wind sound across the roof. So I installed sound deadening material throughout the interior. All of the floor and part of the roof now have this installed. This fixed the noise issue, but now it is too quiet inside. The car is good, and even sits three kids side by side in the back which even other cars we test drove couldn't do comfortable, including some SUVs. Storage was way better than we expected though it is deceptive from the outside. The headroom is more than in my older 96 Subaru Outback which is still going strong. From a different perspective, this is a low maintenance car. 3 quarts of 0w20 oil about ever 5-7k miles 10 dollar good filters. About 4 quarts if you needed to change the CVT fluid. (every 40-50k miles.) Most of the parts needed for this car are also on the cheap side though if they fail under the warranty period, it's covered and it is one of the best warranties. The engine is a alloy block with heads and a MIVEC variable valve system. It is possible that this could produce more power, but they chose instead to focus on reliability, economy, and improved MPG and it shows. The transmission is also rated for 150hp so it should last a long time with the limited 78hp this engine is setup to produce. The CVT uses a three gear setup paired with a dual conical with belt CVT design. A high and low gear with reverse. Engineering wise, I am happy and impressed, even if the numbers are "small." Handling has also improved against 2014 and 2017 variants of the Mirage and I think it mostly has to due to the stiffing of the suspension springs which help take the body roll out of the question though cornering does still have a little of that SUV roll in tighter turns. Speakers inside are also notably better than older versions of the Mirage as well. This is paired with the 7 inch infotainment system. I wouldn't say that the speakers are thumping loud, and this is evident with the size of the magnet on them. They sound quiet but sound good and if you have sound dampening/proofing materials installed it sounds better. But I did not think a upgrade was needed for my wife and I after the sound proofing. You do need to connect the android phone directly to the USB connection next to the cup holders to get Android Auto to work. I believe Airplay does not need to be directly connected and only needs a wireless connection to work but I did not test that. When it comes to the market now, it is hard to find cars at the MSRP. This is the cheapest car you can buy, but there is a lot of things I like about it. Sure, many cars do it better at higher prices with more bells and whistles, but that also means more difficult and expensive repairs and increased chances that more failures will occur. Safety wise, this has full curtain airbags for the sides as well as front airbags and driver knee airbag (for the only marginal score offered by the IIHS where the foot had a potential to make contact in the partial overlap test.) It also comes with a backup camera as well as frontal collision avoidance system. (A dual camera, for stereoscopic vison which is for depth perception, design that applies the breaks for you to mitigate the chances of a accident or mitigate the damage if there is one.) Another instance of safety that is overlooked is the connection to the road through the steering wheel. The steering feel is good here, despite being a electric assisted steering, it does not take the feel of the road away from the driver. I enjoy driving this car, even if the CVT refuses to thrust me into the seat on a take off. (I don't hate CVTs from a engineering standpoint, but I understand that it takes the "fun" out of feeling gears changing.) The engine will let you rev high in this car, which is partly why flooring the pedal wont let you do much in this car. I found that if I moderate the flow and feel of the CVT out, through the acceleration pedal, I can get it to accelerate more efficiently and more engaged. So far, our city and hwy mpg is around 38city on a cold day and 45 mixed average. I have no just hwy travel, but my wife frequently gets 48 when going to work which is mostly hwy. So this is a great car if you want a cheap, reliable car that you shouldn't need to repair often and can transport up to three kids (9,7,4) to where they need to go. (The 4 year old is still in a 3 in 1 booster seat with harness. Another Interesting to note moment, my kids say the rear seat was the most comfortable of the cars we tested. Loads of leg room even at 6'1 I was happy in the back seat behind the drivers seat. I do hope this helps someone out there. Despite my opinion or facts, I still think people should test the cars they want to drive to find out what works best. If you have kids, bring kids seats to see if they fit well, and it even helps to bring at least one kid who will be riding in the back to see what feels good for them as well. Many of the cars we tested focused mostly on the front seat comfort, the only one we tested that was better was the Subaru, and that was too pricey for us as we had to replace our car more quickly than we would have liked due to numerous wiring faults that started to pop up. (A theme I saw with GM vehicles of late.) The whole chip shortage issue that has starved our appetites for cars is not helping. Honda and Toyota do have options, but both were more expensive, and the Sentra from Nissan failed our kid test but felt great overall in the front but only used versions were near us when we were looking and they were asking nearly new prices for cars that were 60k miles or higher. I am super happy with the car we did get, and even traveled nearly 100 miles to get it.

Surprisingly Good

I got this car as a rental when my SUV was totalled. It was all they had in the price range allowed by insurance, so I took it. All I can say is Wow. Immediately I noticed how well I could feel the steering and its uncanny connection to the road. After driving an SUV for 20 years, I had become numb to the sensations of driving. Yes, the engine is buzzy, but it's plenty powerful enough. It takes a moment to hit 70 on the interstate. but who cares? When you're having this much fun getting from A to B, you forget little bothers. The electronics are fine, good actually. Stereo has Bluetooth and phone capability, so what's not to like. Power locks and windows, yep. Only thing is I wish it had leather seats. I'd be in love if the cockpit was a little more plush. And 43 MPG...hot dang. I hope insurance takes their time settling my case cause I'm enjoying every minute of this thing!

Absoultely nothing wrong with this car

One can get a lower delivered price versus MSRP than probably any 4-door hatchback car sold in the U.S. with few exceptions. Better mpg than Spark, Versa, Fiesta and Fit. Lower "real" price than Spark, Versa, Fiesta and Fit. More cargo space than all competitors except Fit. More usability than the 3-door Fiat 500. With the standard wheels, it has a tighter turning radius than the competitors; better warranty than the competitors. Better still, you can find a heck of a deal on a one or two year old Mirage and still have a very generous warranty and the best mpg of the entire bunch. The only car I've found that competes on price 1-3 years old is the Fiat 500, but it's only a 3-door and has many more issues for driving dynamics, as I own one. The negotiated lower price is one huge feature missing from professional reviewers' analysis of this car versus the competition. This consideration is absolutely analyzed in most consumer reviews, which explains the huge discrepancy. I test drove a 2018 CVT ES model and could find nothing wrong with this car in any area for driving a car for transformational purposes. Accelerating normal results in normal acceleration with no fuss or much noise. Handling was fine; suspension was fine; seat comfort is/was exemplary; far superior to my F150 and Fiat 500; 14" wheels results in very agile and quick maneuvers in the city and going up to speeds of 65 or below was completely without notice good or bad, which is what one would want and actually prefer in a basic city car. Other cars may be better at this or that or have more appealing appearance, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with this car driving it around that I could find whatsoever, and I drive many late model vehicles. I test drove a 2018 Mirage with 20K on the odometer from a dealer. They were asking $10K. They showed me a picture of my preferred 5-speed 2019 (used) with 6 miles on the odometer for $11.7K. How in the world can reviewers be telling us this car is a bad choice except for it's depreciation? If you want a car to drive to 100,00-200,000 miles over 6-12 years that is completely fine and gets good mpg, this is your car.

I Bought One! The Reviewers Didn't!

This is a very good basic car. The Reviewers drive a Lexus and then a BMW and then a Porsche and then a Buick and a Lincoln. What do they think about the Mirage? It's small. It's not powerful. It's buzzy. No kidding! This car gets you into a brand new car at a very used car price. It has a killer warranty and.....it gets the job done! The hatch with the back seat folded gives impressive cargo space. As I mentioned previously, I actually bought one, uhmm, with my own money that I earned, uhmm unlike the reviewers. I get hybrid like mileage often over 50 mpg and it's been anvil like reliable for 50,000 miles. In case I haven't mentioned it I, bought mine with my own money that I earned and I love it! BUT!!! Shop for a deal. Depreciation is steep on these little runabouts.

Honest review of 2020 Mirage LE

Best gas mileage you can get without buying a hybrid. Cool styling, snazzy accents, plenty of cargo room for the car size. Easy to drive, easier to park. Very affordable to buy, own, and drive. Superior warranty coverage for peace of mind. If that sounds like what you’re looking for, this is the car for you as long as you are okay with a VERY sluggish, noisy ride and minimal comfort for backseat passengers, such as kids. I was disappointed from the get go with the super slow acceleration and noisiness of the engine, but for what I need (very affordable, reliable car to commute to and from work daily on busy city streets) these drawbacks are acceptable. I have no regrets about buying this vehicle because it suits my needs and the sluggishness isn’t an issue for my commute, as I don’t have to drive on any highways and mostly drive on busy city streets. I would definitely not want to take a road trip in this car, however! Hope this review helps you in your decision.

Don't believe the negative "pro" reviews. Let me say that first. This car does all it needs to do. For the price in 2020 on a brand new car---it is a solid choice. The only reason I would say to avoid it would be the harsh resale value. These cars have terrible resale values, but they ain't the only ones out there. The power is fine---as long as you aren't expecting a race car. It is just loud getting up to speed. I drive a 19 Mirage hatch LE trim on 85 going towards Charlotte and it is fine. The winds push it a little bit but seeing as how the car weighs about 2,100 lbs, it ain't gonna blow away. Seats are very comfortable and the front ones have heat---they fire up very quickly. This car has apple carplay and it is a great feature. Voice activated commands for calling somone or simply say "play Elvis" and it all works. I am in the mid 30's all the time in the city and 45 on the highway.

PROs -The interior room is surprising for a car this size passenger seats and cargo. -Fuel economy best for a subcompact car matches hybrids. -Affordable the price for this car is low and even lower with incentives. -Cheap to maintain very little oil is needed. -Small tire size which makes tire selection affordable. -Warranty is amazing for its class. -Good amount of options to choose from to fit anyone's needs. -CVT transmission is smooth and efficient. NEGATIVES -The 3 cyl engine struggles a lot passing other cars or when its on any kind of grade. -Noises you can hear everything the road and the wind. -There is nothing super fancy about this car it is kind of bland as far as styling is concerned. -The attention to detail and materials are no where present cheap plastic lots of gaps. -Options can pit this car into not worth it waters very easily get the bare minimum this is not a car to splurge on. FINAL IMPRESSIONS I'm going to drive it to see how long it last 3,000 miles so far not a single issue sometimes there's beauty in simplicity.

I bought this car new in 2020 and it's been just about perfect. I get 47mph on highway and the car has been mechanically sound. I have 28,000 on it and its needed nothing. Looks tiny but my Brother-in-law was shocked when he got in the car because he is 6'4 and he still had a few inches head room. We were laughing about it. A great little inexpensive car. Don't listen to the "so called experts."

We just purchased this car for my niece. Her first car she will be taking to college. I have had friends that owned Mitsubishi cars that were very reliable but, we were really concerned after reading the reviews on the mirage from professional reviewers. Based on consumer reviews we decided to go and test drive the Mirage and are very happy that we did. We ended up buying this brand new car for my niece for $11,933 and we could not be happier. I will update review later on reliability but all of the other issues that the professional reviewers pointed out are pretty much non existent or inconsequential when looking for a first time vehicle for a teenager. Do yourself a favor and give it a chance by test driving one and make up your own mind. If its not what your looking for don't buy it.

If you are looking for a new car with an outstanding warranty, low price point, look no further than the Mitsubishi Mirage. Is it a race car? No. It’s not designed to be one. It’s designed to take you comfortably from point A to point B and back reliably and economically. Whatever you do, do not believe some of these so-called professional reviewer‘s. If you are thinking about purchasing one, take one for a test drive and keep in mind what this little vehicle is designed to do. I have just over 4000 miles on mine and I cannot recommend it to other people enough if they are looking for an inexpensive and reliable car.

I've had my mirage for roughly 6 months now and I've had absolutely no complaints. It gets the job done. The interior is nice and it is the perfect car for someone small like me, OR who just doesn't want a huge SUV. The average speed limit is typically 50 where I live so the speed isn't an issue. A car's only purpose isn't to go fast. I totally, wholeheartedly recommend a mirage! I only have to fill my tank like once a month!

I am a 6’1”, 200 lb, 55 year old man with history of back surgery. My last car was a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis, which was very heavy and had a very comfortable ride. So with all the reviews from “experts” that complain about road noise and weak engine, you would expect me to hate this car. BUT I DON’T I am very comfortable in my Mirage Hatchback. There is ample head room and leg space. I live in a city that requires merging onto a highway with 65 mph zone, and I have no problem getting up to 65 before merging. The interior does not seem cheap to me. My daughter has a 2017 Mirage and her interior looks great with no cracking or damage to the seats, dash or controls. I commute 12 miles to work 5 days a week. So excited to have this car.

The acceleration is not slow. It might not be a sports car from the 70s but it keeps up with traffic. Easy and sharp turns. It's safe with air bags and it's economical. Agreed that the steering wheel and some parts feel a little cheap but that's why the price is low

This car is mainly for the conservatives who likes fuel saving vehicle with modern traditional style feel. In general, this car is meant to be that. Practical, reliable, and excellent mpg. In my opinion, the way I feel about this car, is really fun! Engine noise is like music to my ears, acceleration is poor but having to rev up the vehicle in most driving situation is exciting. The car is like a big bubble inside so the view is large to see out. I am also a self mechanic and doing this work on a small car with so much space inside the engine is a walk in the park in the future repairs and I can go on and on. Now a days people want speed and never minds the mpg. And with so much technology in most selling modern cars these days, having to worry about something breaking down would not be fun for the wallet or purse. Keep it simple, keep it real! 😎 Update* My car had 12600 miles and it has been doing what it needs to do taking me to work and errands etc. No issues at all And easy to maintain.

Hate to abuse an ol cliche ..... But for the money it's a great car . My first mirage was totalled due to a collision that wasn't my fault after making 1 payment . With the options and the warranty for the price financed I think it's a great car . Someone with good credit could probably get one for 150 bucks a month . One on the lot I noticed was a little over 13,000 . Basic transportation at its finest IMO .

I have had BMW, Denali, Laramie Longhorn Diesel, and had enough of icon big money wasted vehicles. Purchased a new auto Mirage. Comfortable, economical, practical, worry free, driver. I put on approx. 700k per week, drive mostly in the right lane at 112kph at 2200rpm at 47 mpg. I accelerate to what ever driving speed I need at or below 4krpm. The car is not up to BMW build, or acceleration....but. Pound for pound comparison the Mirage wins.and the 10 year warranty ....in 2030 I will still have factory warranty.it will get my dogs to the vet(a worrisome trip in a laramie longhorn), my clubs to the golf course, (and I wont have a trouble finding a parking spot) my wife and I to the curling club. I have taken it on a long trip for fishing(600kms) and found the seating comfort outstanding. My fuel bill is approx.$250.00 less per month, so in comparison to my Dodge Ram Diesel the cars frugality almost pays for itself. One personal note, the gas tank should have been built larger. I really dont like driving with less than 1/2 a tank of tiger juice. (For you young fellas Esso used to advertise its gas by putting a tiger in your tank) lol All in, I wish I had of purchased this type of car 30 years ago, and let go of the wallet robbing icons of the road.

I bought my Mirage hatch back in 2020. I love it. Great gas mileage. It has slowww pick up but i knew I wasn't going to race the car. LOL. It keeps up with traffic and I've owned it for 3 years and have no complaints. Great buy for the money. Personal reviews are more favorable than professional reviews. Anyone looking for a reliable inexpensive brand new car, buy this. You won't be dissapointed.

I have always liked tiny, uncomplicated cars that are fun to drive. My Mirage ES isn't sporty or particularly quick, but it's roomy and comfortable. With a 5-speed manual, it'll get you there on time. It's cheap on gas. It replaced a 2017 Ford Fiesta and is a much more practical car.

I purchased the Mirage 2019 in June 2022. The car was everything i was looking for...price...backup camera, Bluetooth..low mileage and the color. I needed something affordable and low mileage. I go to the lake a lot in the summer. My drive on the interstate is as comfortable as my last car...Mazda 3. She gets up to a comfortable 80 mph when i want it to... When i drive this car i don't feel like i'm driving a tiny car... I'm short anyway so it's perfect for me. I can honestly say.. i love this little car..one of the favorite cars I've purchased.

Don’t Believe the Poor Reviews

I rated the car based on comparable cars. Firstly, when it comes to this car get the manual transmission or don’t bother. You need to be able to put the revs where you want them to get the most out of this engine. Most CVT transmissions are garbage anyway. Secondly, someone mentioned the car hydroplaned easy. The stock tires do great in rain and snow … when they have tread. They wear out incredibly fast for as expensive as they are. I had to change mine at 28,000 and prob should of changed them sooner. The ones I switched to don’t do as well in the rain but as long as I’m not speeding it’s not an issue. I’ve passed 4wd Jeeps in the snow (because people don’t know how to drive). As long as the snow isn’t 6 inches deep you’ll get where you’re going. The car is cheap, but I would buy it again in a heartbeat. It’s comfortable, has all the amenities I require, AMAZING gas mileage. I often am not easy on the gas pedal and still averaging 44mpg over the life of the car so far. All my complaints are super minor, for example, the car doesn’t easily go into gear when it’s cold out until it warms up, which is annoying. Also, I’ve twice cut my finger opening the glovebox because there’s some piece of metal that my fingers hit if I stick them way in there.

We got this as a commuter vehicle & it's a gas saver. Acceleration for the highway is a bit lacking but that's expected for a 3 cylinder. Tanks a but small too at 9.5 gallons, 12 or 13 would be better to allow less fill ups in a week.

It's not the most refined car, the pickup is decent but not earth shattering. However the 38.2 MPG's that I average and a low monthly car payment make it a pleasure to own. The SE has a nice push button start with keyless entry and very nice LED lights with automatic daytime running headlights and the heated seats are great in the winter. Very solid car and extremely economical.

Wonderful fuel efficacy if you're driving 75mph or less, anything over that the fuel efficiency is that of a minivan. Has absolutely no pickup in speed, terrible at going up any sort of incline. Hydroplanes excessively easy, don't even think you can drive this in the snow, and if it's windy it feels similar to driving a cargo van. This vehicle is so unsafe I don't know how it's even on the market

I've had three 2022 Mitsubishi mirage for almost for month..My Radiator some how Cracked by a rock.It was towed to the Mitsubishi dealership..which I was told..I sent it believing that warranty is still valid due to it only has 5141 miles on the cover..so I proceed to read the warranty book..which I find that stones/rock is not covered..So the dealership want me to pay for the towing after telling me it was free..due the rock cracked the radiator..the cost is 1400 dollars..That's almost 10%of wat the car cost..the car is very small..the radiator I not that big..it don't take long to put it in..plus ion have that type of money for a small car that I'm carry a note on ..God be with me ..I really feel like that's way to much for such a small..car...I need some assistance with the issue..Did yall do a stone test to c if this would happen??..I would b really nice if this could b resolved with out a price tag..

Worst car ive ever owned!

J. Stallings, 02/16/2021
2020 Mitsubishi Mirage LE 4dr Hatchback (1.2L 3cyl CVT)

This has to be the worst car ive ever owned. For starters, it sounds like a chainsaw under acceleration, its pathetic 68 horsepower is borderline unsafe when accelerating to get on the highway or pull onto main roads, its far from being a comfortable ride. Brand new in Virginia the car was 22,000$ so it’s beyond overpriced. Currently the car has 18k miles and twice within the past month the car has CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING! TWICE!! And no recall has been posted for it yet. In my honest opinion as an unfortunate owner of this tragedy called a “car”, it has to be one of the biggest rip offs mitsubishi has produced yet. Im am not satisfied at all. My honest professional opinion as a mechanic i would say it is a money pit. The motor is cheap quality and poorly designed and the electrical system is almost bound to have alot of failures. The motor is strictly a synthetic oil motor so getting it changed will run you 60$ or more. The CVT transmission is garbage and will most definitely become a problem at some point early in its life as most CVTs are unreliable to begin with. To shorten this description, in my 10 years as a mechanic i have never seen a vehicle so prone to failure. The only reason i own this car is because my husband and i needed another vehicle asap and it was our last option. Take my advice and leave this heap of junk on the dealerships lot to rot.
