265,000 and still strong

I just wanted to send a testimony to my 1994 Diamante Wagon. I have driven it for the last five years with only routine maintenance. The 'ol girl has 265,000 miles on it, and I just replaced the timing belt...hoping to get to 300,000 and beyond. A joy to drive!

This car wasn't bad...when I first bought it. I will agree that now that it has 225,000 miles on it, things will happen. However, this car is a nightmare. I recently found out that the engine in these cars has a recall. They burn oil and in 3,000 miles you will have nothing left. This goes along with the expensive parts I have had to replace. I would not suggest buying this car for the long term.

What a wonderful car

I got this car as a replacement to my Sebring conv. and it has been nothing but a joy to drive. Always starts first try no matter how cold it is or how long it has been sitting in the driveway. I have gotten thousands of safe and reliable miles out of this car despite it's nine yrs. old. This is a wonderful car that I would recommend to anyone looking for a dependable four door sedan.

Bought this car with 110,000 miles on it. As soon as I drove it I loved it. Great low end torque, smooth ride, lots of options. Very minor mechanical problems. I can't count anymore how many compliments I have gotten while going into a supermarket, or at a gas station about how nice of a car I have.

I bought the car used with 118K on it. I paid 2,500 dollars. I was preparing to go cross country, from DC to Seattle, and needed a car that coudl carry all of my stuff. The Diamante Wagon seemed to fit the bill. It was fantastic all teh way over the Rockies and beyond. I have 131K on her now and not a lick of trouble.

We purchased this car from a private party in 02 and I'm embarrassed to admit this but I have never taken my car to be serviced... EVER! My dad changed the oil on occasions and with that said the car is still going. Amazingly I don't know how it's still running but it is. I don't like my car, it's old and ugly but damn you can put it through a lot and it keeps ticking.

Reliable old car

As a student, I inherited this car, which has surpassed my expectations. The car is comfortable, and has so many options, even more than most new cars. It handles well on the highway at high speeds, the engine is slow but keeps up with traffic and is reliable except when the water pump failed. It has a lot of space and looks decent (small factory spoiler and sporty alloy wheels) The transmission shifts roughly when taking off from a stop but on the highway the car is quieter and smoother that a lot of other cars I have been in. Also mine is one of the few cars from the early 90's to have the optional ABS.

I have had this car since I bought it new and it has prevented me from buying a new car for 9 years. It is a great car that has had very minimal problems-- front breaks, AC work and 2 batteries. I have a small oil leak now, but after 151000 miles, it is expected. Paint is in excellent shape and is very fun to drive. My wife thinks I am crazy because I want to keep it forever. gas mileage is 17 city and 24 highway.

Bought this car at a year old with 22K. In 13 years of ownership, it's had ONE unscheduled service--needed a new starter motor 2 years ago. Overall, this is the best car I've owned. It's totally reliable and has never failed to crank on the first try except for the day it needed that starter motor. Best car ever on the highway--safe and comfortable. I have nothing bad to say about my Diamante. It's a wonderful car. Too bad Mitsu didn't keep it up.

Diamante ES 1994 Honest Review

At first, when I got the car I was very happy to have it. Drives quiet and I felt very comfortable driving it. The car showed itself to be very slow and big like a boat. I didn't know what kind of engine is there so I researched and I find that the there is 3.0 V6 which produces 175hp. Too little for a car of this size. The ES has 3.0 v6 SOCH 12valve (2 valve per cylinder) 175hp. The car handles well except sharp turns; It drifts.

I believe this is one of the best Mitsubishi sedans out there, or sedan in general. My family all owns Mitsubishi's and we all love them. This car out performs Honda, Toyota, Nissan and any other Japanese sedans out there. Plus the quality is great, and will last for another 100,000 miles. I have pushed it everyday since I have got it and it still goes smoothly.

This was a great car to drive when I first got it, but soon thereafter things began to fall apart. Be careful when you have to replace the struts. They run approximately $1000 apiece not to mention replacing the compressor for the air ride system. Speaking with mechanics who have fixed my car, they have mentioned similar problems with other Diamantes including problems with the transmission, air compressed struts, air conditioning. I can't wait to finally get rid of the car. I am convinced that Diamante means "headache" in Japanese.

I have really enjoyed my Mitsubishi! It handled like a sports car( man, it can corner!), had a throaty growl on acceleration, and still looks great! The interior held up well for over 10 years ..just a small wear spot on the drivers side mat.

Overall this is not a bad car. However, the paint doesn't last, the seats are coming apart at the seams, and the automatic transmission is real troublesome. Also, this has to be one of the least aerodynamic cars I have ever driven - it gets about 18 mpg around town and about 20 on the highway.

Since I'm riding in this japanese dream I'm not missing a thing at all. What's worth to be mentioned is the very high mileage: when I bought it, the odometer showed 189000 miles - that was in the end of '99! Now I just surpassed the magic 222222 barrier and the engine still has that confident powerful expression - how I love that! To paint the complete picture, I have to add that I needed to get the rocker box cover gasket replaced as part of the maintenance which I still order but that's the only exceptional expense I had. Bottom line: get your hands on one!

6 cylinder, SOHC. Excellent reliability, performance. Important to have qualified mechanics do the major maintenance, such as timing belt replacement. Premium tires make a big difference in quality of ride and handling. The only complaint I have had is the turning radius.

THE CAR IS SO MUCH FUN TO DRIVE. I REFER TO IT AS A POOR MAN'S BMW. IT HAS AN AGGRESSIVE GRILL. THE HANDLING IS A LITTLE LOOSE, BUT THE STEERING IS RESPONSIVE. THE CAR RESPONDS WELL TO ALL INPUTS. TRASMISSION SHIFTS ARE EXCELLENT. I WISH IT CAME WITH A MANUAL. THE ALUMINUM WHEELS ARE TOO SMALL FOR THE VEHICLE. IT SHOULD HAVE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MITSU!

Overall it's been a great car that hasn't let us down. Some weak point on the car is its oil consumption with age and the life of the brakes before they "wobble". Both items are known in the Diamante community and there are ways to combat them, but they are out there as issues. Otherwise, pretty good car for the price.

Bought car with 14K dealer demo miles and owned it through 100K. Love this car! very BMW-ish styling with great reliability. Upgraded to 16" alloy wheels and good tires -good move for handling and less brake fade/wobble. Door locks got a little funny(mind of their own)probably due to worn D.door switch. Highly recommend this car!

Apparently there are about 85 of these in the Bay Area (out of 5M cars...). This was the most comfortable wagon, with the best ergonomics, space, and setup. Extremely comfortable for me (6'5") and the whole family. The problem with this car: the engines just suck. At about 85,000 miles this car started developing all sorts of problems (leaks in the block, for example) and mechanics reported that this is not uncommon. Traded this car, sadly, for a Subaru.

Great car parked w/grass all around

Best car I ever owned until the warranty ran out... then, new steering assembly ($1500). Electrical problems out the wazoo. The coup de gras, engine blew due to defective cam shaft, and I change the oil every 2000 miles, like an idiot, and this car made feel like one. I spent another $1800 to fix the engine, but they couldn't put Humpty togather again. I sold it to my neighbor for $600 and begged him not to buy it. Now the his grass is growing around it. He thought he could fix it, but 1 year later it still sits. Mitsubishi, fool me once, shame on you.

Best Car I've Ever Owned!

I now have about 328,000 miles on this car and have had it since it was new. Besides normal maintenance (brakes, tires, filters, etc), I've only replaced a ball joint, alternator, engine manifold exhaust pipe, and fuel injectors. The engine and tranny are original and in great condition. There is no sign of them wearing out yet. I've gotten more than my money's worth out of this car. It still looks great with only very small spots of rust just developing on the front fenders just behind the wheels. The cloth interior also still looks great with no signs of wear. I've never had a car like this before.

I Can't Quit Her!

Who knew this would end up being my all-time favorite car, beating out two Mercedes and an Audi? Not even me. My Diamante ES has been totally reliable, only seeing the inside of the shop for 30,000 mile scheduled maintenance except for a new idle motor a year ago. I never get tired of driving it. The engine started the known valve seal problem after 80,000 miles but I just keep the oil level up, occasionally add a bottle of Lucas. Its handling is great for this class car, esp with latest tires, Kumho Solus KH18s. I bought an Accord two years ago thinking Molly would need to retire after ten years. She sat ignored until I sold the Honda, realizing I didn't like it as much and didn't need it!

I have never had so much mechanical trouble with a car like I have had with the Mitsubishi. This car has given me so much heartache and expense. I have taken good care of it but the motor, transmission, and compressor still went out!!! And yes, the warranty just ended at 75,000..But I kept driving it because it was paid for, but it has had it's time in the shops!! My brother got him Mits. and had the same trouble and turned it in within a year. I will NEVER buy a Mits. again. AND I have told very many people about the bad experiences that I have had. I do not want anyone to go thru what I went thru with the expense in repairs.

The car was purchased as a program car 12 months old with 20k. The car chews up brakes and needs to be re-padded ever 30-35k. Other than that there have been no problems in nearly 140k miles. The engine runs at a high temp (normal) and as such you need to change the oil religiously to prevent a buildup. This is an exceptionally engineered car. we ar beginning to get a nominal hesitation in shifting out of first gear when cold (138.5k miles). Not significant. We got 65k miles out of our first two sets of tires. Both changes were done not because we were low on tred, but for an opportunistic sale at Pepboys. We could have gone another 10k+ both times.
