good things about Tracer

1992 Mercury Tracer LTS 4dr Sedan

We bought our Tracer used nearly 5 years ago, and have driven it about 140,000 miles since then. It has occasional problems getting stuck in high gear when slowing at a stoplight or tollbooth, but the mechanic has never experienced the problem when they test-drive it. Otherwise it is very reliable, its only problems have been tire or battery problems, no mechanical failures. It has good pick-up on the highway (cruises happily at 70-75 mph), and is comfortable -- especially for a small person.

I bought the LTS model with the 1.8 liter engine new in 1992 and have only had to perform normal vehicle maintenance (e.g. change oil, battery, tires, etc.) The car ran great from the time I purchased it and is still running great with 93,000 miles. There are no oil or other fluid leaks. I have owned at least ten other cars of many makes and models; and this one is the best of them all.

Good little wagon

1993 Mercury Tracer 4dr Wagon

The only major problem I've had with this car after 9 years was a cracked valve seat at 140,000 miles. It's had other minor problems throughout, so I've probably spent about $2500 in 9 years of repairs. However, it's always started up and run, never left me stranded. Even with the cracked valve seat, it limped 60 miles home on 3 cylinders. It's not a performer. It'll get up to 100mph but I'd turn the A/C off before trying anything more than half-hearted acceleration. On the other hand, fuel economy is excellent. The fold-down seats and roof rack come in handy.

Great Little Car!

This little wagon is the second most reliable car I have ever owned, next to my '77 Camaro. It gets great gas mileage in both city and especially highway. It has plenty of room for trips to Home Depot, or taking my two Dobermans to the park. Of course, don't expect to win any races (hah!), and other drivers seem to take pleasure in cutting you off.

A good reliable car. You will be surprised how much stuff you can fit in this car. The gas milage is not as good as on other small models... 26 MPG for mixed driving; No more than 28 on highway. The automatic seatbelts are somewhat annoying.
