ML350 - Don't touch one!

If you research this vehicle you will find they have problems with the balance shaft and this equals expensive repairs. MB will not admit a problem exists but the blogs show this to be untrue. They have also introduced a replacement (read upgrade) kit to address their non existent problems. My experience has been that a cog on the balance shaft has disintegrated causing much internal damage. The engine had to be removed and parts replaced. 30 hours labour. Can you afford the risk? I currently have 2 MB's but will not touch another one.

Balance shaft recall & reliability

There's a ballnce shaft problem where MB extended the warantee for 10 years on this $5,800 job. One dealer did not know about it. They still hit me $1,800 to replace defective intake manifold that was not covered. This car has a computer from hell giving false signals on light bulbs etc. Not nearly as reliable as my 99 E430. Truck ate about $10k in repairs this year. I expected a lot better quality from MB but this is true for all German cars lately. Why pay this kind of money when cars casting half are more reliable?

I've had this car for 5.5 years now. It's been great to us and has never left us stranded. This is a car that needs an owner that timely addresses all preventive maintenance items before they become repair items, because then it gets expensive. The all wheel drive system is great and it is like a tank in rain and snow. Solid! Good power. Very comfy ride. Plenty of room.

My ML has been solid transport in all weathers

I've owned this car since new, and I've only recently had to invest serious money in repairs (after 10yrs). While the leather on the driver's seat has suffered a bit, the rest of the interior has born up well. The paint remains as new. The transmission has had intermittent issues, but those problems have mysteriously vanished. I've never had problems with the AWD system or hill-descent control, which I've used extensively. I've just had to spend $5k on myriad repairs, but when amortized over 10yrs, the cost of ownership has been acceptable. All it all, it's been one of the better cars I've owned and still looks and drives great. The driving position is very comfortable for taller drivers (I'm 6'5") and even with the driver's seat adjusted for me, the passenger behind the driver still has reasonable room. The engine has never missed a beat after 132000 miles, and the electrics are still working as new. My primary complaint has been the quality of the switchgear which is rather poor, and a twitchy left signal light that fails and recovers all on it's own. The window switches on the driver's side have repeatedly popped out and I can no longer use the sunroof due to a dodgy switch (don't like the sunroof anyway). That and I have to agree that the UI on the nav system is a bit of a pain. Overall I have to say that my main complaint is that it will be very hard to replace this car once it packs it in. The new ones are silly and far too Japanese-looking IMHO.

2006 ML350 - excellent SUV

The 2006 ML 350 has more than enough power especially when bolted to the 7 speed automatic transmission. I do not know why anyone would purchase the ML500 after driving the ML350. Acceleration is adequate to any task short of the drag strip. The car is extremely quiet even at high speeds. The Harmon Kardon stereo is the best factory set-up I have heard and is significantly better than the Bose systems I have had. I do not like the cruise control stalk as it is too close to the turn signal stalk. You must also pay close attention to options as they can be confusing. Overall an excellent SUV and MB provides lifetime roadside assistance at no additional cost!

Run away folks and never buy an ML350. I assumed since it was German engineered, it would be perfect like the BMW which I've owned several BMWs sonce the 90s. I chose the ML350 over the X5 based on being of a more luxurious look. I didn't expect the quality to be that of a $10,000 new vehicle. It was just that, a piece of junk. From the balance shaft issues to the power steering issues to the transmission issues, it never stops. Repairs in the thousands! Saddest part is Mercedes knew about their defective issues and don't stand behind their known defects leaving the customers in a bad way. Shame on Mercedes! I will never buy a Mercedes-Benz again and will stick with BMW always. My Mercedes-Benz SUV piece of junk everyday vehicle is now garaged and I'm forced to drive my weekend BMW M6 as my everyday vehicle until I figure out what to do to get rid of it without taking a huge financial loss but still maintaining my honesty conveying the good, the bad and the ugly which is how I live my life. Mercedes don't care about reputation nor repeat business from loyal customers; they just care about money....

We purchased an 2006 ML500 a year ago. It has been in the shop at least 4 times and over $10K of repairs. I am glad we purchased the extended warranty and it is still covered. Thank God! Anways, if this suv was just reliable it would be perfect. My wife and I love driving this vehicle. The problem it is always in the shop. We are thinking about trading it in because it a hassle taking it to the shop every 3-4 months. This is by far the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned.

Dealership charges $600 for glorified oil change (schedule C). Have had for 4 yrs only about 7000 mi/yr. Now my warranty is up- last month. Only 28,000 mi., I have had numerous transmission problems, only the Mercedes dealership will take care of it. Have spent over $5000 since warranty out.

The 2006 Mercedes Benz ML550 is a huge step up from the 2006 Mercedes Benz ML350. At less than 1 mpg difference than the 350 the 550 is definitely the king of the road. Buy the ML550 over the ML350 (if you can find one) and you'll be a whole lot happier.

Be VERY careful with the 2006 ML350. When everything works there's nothing like it! Drive is superb, handling is excellent, and the HK stereo system is incredible. Peppy engine, holds cruise speed no problem, even on inclines. All-around over-engineered but it's something else for sure! However .......... bought it used 2+ years ago (9/16), in pristine external and internal condition, maintenance records showing all oil changes at better-than-Mercedes recommended intervals, with 84k miles on it. Within a week the car went into limp mode (transmission) and I had the transmission/valve body conductor plate issue, repaired that ($1,100), and all was well until about < 1 month later experiencing front-end noises/grinding, thinking wheel bearing but it was the front differential ($1,100). MB poorly designed/implemented bearings (they used light duty bearings) had to be redone (used car dealer's mechanic did poor job on repair, had to have it re-done just last week, but that's an aside). The secondary air intake (front of engine, bolt on, vacuum lines, etc.) failed and did that myself. Thermostat failed at 94k miles. I did that repair myself. Then had that differential bearing sound again, but turned out to be a wheel bearing, a repair I could not do. Recently, the entire liner (inside ceiling fabric) started coming down, had to get that redone. All in all, too many failures along the way, am WAY underwater in terms of what I have in it, and now I am in hope/prayer mode that the scary balance shaft issue does not happen to me. If so then I think I'll scrap it. I will NEVER buy another Mercedes Benz for as long as I live.

Unhappy with 2006 Mercedes ML500

After 8 days of happy ownership and only 200 miles, our ML500 had serious transmission problems, couldn't be driven and it spent the next 4 days in the dealers shop. All this, after waiting an extra 2 months for delivery so "Mercedes could be sure of no quality problems". This was our departure from 15 years of owning Lexus...and we are going back to Lexus. It is a shame because the car is a beauty and rides incredibly well. Too bad the Germans have forgotten how to design and manufacture a car for reliability. By the way, the Mercedes navigation compared to Lexus is far inferior....Lexus makes it so easy to use. When your emotion grabs you to go for style...think quality/reliability.

I wish I was warned before buying this SUV because I would have never gotten it. It looks pretty on the outside, but that's all it is. Unfortunately, I found out about the balance shaft problem after I had purchased the vehicle and was quoted more than $7000.00 by a local MB dealer to fix the problem! I couldn't afford the cost and decided to wait for the class action law suit to conclude before I decided to do anything. Long story short, I found out that the class action law suit covers those who had their SUV fixed which means I'm on my own. I contacted MBUSA to see if they were willing to help with the cost, but was told to pretty much "Go to hell." I guess they don't care about future customers!!!!!Thankfully the car still drives except for the check engine light being on. Hopefully I can get a few more years out of it and get a non-MB vehicle!!!!!!!

Pro: Beautiful suv in and out, Good performance. Con: Expensive up keep/parts/maintenance, issues come up every few months. There're better choice out there. Buy only if it's still under warranty or some kind of extended warranty. Be warned or be ready to pay. Your choice, your money. Better choice is RX350. Update 12/8/19. No longer own MB. Bought RX. Lexus still and will be my choice of car brand. Reasons: liability and resale value. Update 12/1020. As I stated on last update, I NO LONGER own Mercedes As I traded for Lexus RX350 and still have it, with no MAJOR issues. Edmunds please stop telling me to update my review since I longer own the SUV. As I said before, NO LONGER OWN THE VEHICLE.

The styling and sturdiness of the ML350 is great. The Harmon Kardon sound is very good. The trouble I have experienced has been the worst of any vehicle I have ever owned. I have it in the shop now for balance shaft replacement ( out of warranty and a few grand to fix) plus I was told that the transmission control module needs to be replaced ( another $1700). I have had the temperature controls reprogrammed ($150) parking lamp wiring harness replaced ( $200+) parking brake release handle repaired ( $200) plus normal maintenance service of $1000.00 plus already just this year. Stay away from 2006 ML's - maybe all MB vehicles! My servicing dealer is not good either which compounds the issue.

This car is a big let down we are so done with this car, the transmission makes so much noise the shifter is in a bad position, the loud noise from the engine, we have had the car serviced so many times trying to find out about the engine problem, slipping of the transmission. Our 98 ml320 gave us no problems, we should have kept it with 135k miles, sadly disappointed

My daugther spilled some water in the back seat and within minutes, the wipers went wild (couldn't turn it off), the windows rolled down by themselves and various warnings signs came up on the dashboard (i.e. brake fluids malfunction). Then, smoke started to rise from the passenger side. This all happened while driving. How do you design a vehicle that malfunctions like that with a little bit of water spill? Why is the electrical panel located underneath the passenger side seat? What is the electrical system better protected? I think this should be a design defect and warrants a recall.

I brought this car because I owned a Mercedes before. However, I wished I never purchased this year 2006. After having the car a year the engine light came on and the worse began. - Balance Shaft replaced - 8 sensors replaced in 8 month span - 2 Ignition coils replaced - MAF sensor replaced - ECU Connector replaced - Headlight wiring insulation cracked (and shortcut) - The wheel wells are covered in some kind of fabric(?) which will come loose - Rear bulbs keep burning out - Subwoofer blown - Rear windshield wiper does not complete cycle - Interior vents adjusters falling apart (glued?) - Ratting in left front door - Rear hatch rattling - Lots of rattling when interior is cold - Seat Belt lock stops working . The repairs are still being added. I put the car in the shop yesterday and was told $4000 more in work. Mercedes Rep said to get rid of the car. Because this was the first year they rolled this class out the car is a lemon.

Bought this car new, and have no problems other than replacing brake lights and the fuel filter ($3000+). I've 118000+ miles and have no serious complaints other than shoddy switchgear (sunroof switch is broken). Roomy, decent gas milage (23mpg+) and fully-featured, this I believe is my perfect car. However, the 8-quart oil requirement makes for expensive oil changes when using synthetic ($100+).

Umprecedented riding for an ML Class. Impossible to compare to the previous ML, but the Air Ride is a must if you want to have fun. Almost noiseless at 70 mph compared to my previous Lexus RX 330 (04). The interior plastic is disapointing for a Mercedes. I paid 65K (fully loaded). The vehicle is a firm 4x4 under heavy rain. I have with the AMG package which is $4K more, but gives an amazing different appearance from the regular ML 350. More interior leather would help the poor plastic interior( a Chrysler feature). The music component and the rear entertaiment system are a plus to keep the children quiet. The cargo space is almost double of the Lexus RX 330. Gas: 18/22 so far.

I am not sure why this SUV is listed as 16 mpg. I regularly get 22-24 miles per gallon on the freeway and around 18 mpg in town. For an SUV, you can't ask for better. We bought this SUV used and have loved it ever since. I coveted this new model when it came out in 2006 and wanted one then. This is a safe, fun to drive SUV with all the necessary luxury items a driver could want. I agree with other reviewers that it seems louder on the highway, but I was driving a passenger sedan before and from what I have heard, all SUVs are louder on the highway, including the Lexus which prides itself on being super quiet. Overall, a great SUV.

The car is truly beautiful from the outside and wonderful to drive. You have to get the V8. There is probably only 1 mpg difference but a huge difference in power. The only thing is that the inside is soooooo simple. The interior is ok but c'mon, Mercedes really hasn't changed anything on the inside in 100 years. Old buttons, mediocre nav. It makes you wonder about the price when far-inferior cars look amazing on the inside in comparison. Little leg room in the back. Mercedes is a driving machine, yes. But for $60,000- plus (with AMG), I want my car's interior looking a little better than a Honda... don't you think?

We have had this vehicle for just over a year. Overall we are happy with it with the exception of a few things. The biggest issue we have is rear seating for kids. Many of us buy these vehicles because of its safety and frankly it rates phenomenal at the tests. The issue we have is with 2 small children(6 & 8) leg room is non existent due to us having to move our seat back (6 ft 2) but their legs do not hang over the seat. Parents may want to keep this in mind. Service at MB is horrid here in South Florida. The car is a canon, feels safe, turns on a dime, overtakes with no hesitation, turns heads, again it is safe. I would certainly recommend this vehicle to any of you.

I traded in my 2004 Escalade because I was tired of driving a big truck everyday. This is my 9th Benz and compares great to my 2005 S500. Although smaller than the Escalade, I have more features.(my ML500 is loaded with every option available including the phone) Only problem so far is that I need a new air pump for the air suspension feature. I'm told this had been a problem in some of the 2006 models. Overall, I would highly recommend. I'm avid Benz driver and Benz got it right on the 2006 ML500.

We purchased our car in 10/05. We were absolutely thrilled. Three months later my car broke down in the middle lane on the highway. Every light came on inside and the care died. It was the engine. The dealer replaced the engine after having my car in the shop for two weeks. A month later there was a nick in the transmission which required another stay in the shop. 3 months later two recalls were fixed. This car was a horrible let down. You can hear and feel the car shift gears. We are actually looking for another car to buy. I have two kids and it does not offer the reliability that a mom would feel comfortable driving. It was truly a let down.

This vehicle is very comfortable. The navigation system could be improved a bit. It's difficult to enter information at times. In my first year I had to take it to the dealer 2 times, and now working on my third, for things like dying battery, non-operable cd changer and now the moon roof squeaks bad and does not always want to close all the way. I have not had any mechanical problems only small issues so it is all good. Some of the issues have been a hassle but I would and probably will buy another ML.

The navigation system comes in handy as well. It's an ideal car for a family or just one person. It's not too big and not too small. It's perfect. I'd highly recommend purchasing this automobile if you're in the market for a reasonably priced SUV.

I love my 1st Benz. AWD is great, leather is plush. I feel safe in it and it's the perfect car for the canadian winters. 1 problem though. My sunroof cracked during a heavy rain storm [luckily I was in a partly covered parking stall] water dripped into my plush leather. MB should use stronger sunroof glass to prevent $1500 for a new sunroof glass.other wise I love It!

Some people may have bought a "monday or friday" car, meaning the days nobody wants to work, a few mishaps made down the assembly line( yes you can research and find out what day our car was born on FYI) However, I'm surprised at all the bad reviews. This is my second mercedes but first ML truck. I love it truely & thanking God i have not experienced the nightmares of others. I get so many compliments.I will admit the wiring harness had to be fixed by dealer( free of charge) but other than that the car is perfect total class.. Mercedes is worth the money and yes expensive to maintain but hey... you gotta Pay to Play right..

Just sold my wife's MDX and picked up a 2006 ML350. While the MDX was incredibly reliable and practical, it drove like an appliance. The Benz is a big step forward in performance. The engine feels much more powerful than her 2002 MDX and the transmission is by far the most seamless I've ever driven. It's much quieter on the highway than the MDX and just feels more substantial too. Braking is much better (not a strong suit of the Acura). Overall a great SUV. I hope it proves to be reliable.

We drove our new ML-350 from Florida to Oregon and back for 8,000 miles only a month after purchasing it. It handled beautifully in the desert, in the mountains at 9,000 feet and in snow in Nevada. Then we returned home to see a poor rating on the M-class published by Consumer Reports. Unbelievable! We have lost immense respect for CR for a long, long time. And we love our ML-350.

Just traded in the 2006 Mercedes ML-350 with 116,000 miles on it. Worst car ever. Reliability was terrible. Resell is horrible. Basic maintenance is extremely expensive. Had battery troubles, alternator troubles, and electronic troubles. Horrible design. Electrical boards are under the seats, so you can't get anything wet. One time the wipers, alarm and locks went off just because the battery was dying AGAIN. Automatic liftgate never worked. Sick and tired of Mercedes and will never buy again. Traded it in for a 2013 Acura RDX.

When I first drove the new M-Class I was shocked. I had never driven a vehicle, ANY vehicle, that after a test drive, I decided right then and there to buy it. The build quality is second to none. Power eveywhere you need it, at any RPM. I only wish I had waited for the AMG version with over 475 horsepower. The AMG version will be stronger and better built than the Porsche SUV, and cost less. Outstanding quality!

I purchased my first Benz and positively my last. The SUV in general was pretty good until a couple of months later after I purchased it (brand new) It's been a nightmare since then. Something had to be fixed every now and then,at least 3-4 times a year. When it was still under warranty,it wasn't a big deal. Then big things started breaking after the warranty expired. I can now say it's a piece of junk. My 2 Lexus RX 330's and a Nissan pathfinder in the past had not been in the shop for repairs collectively as my ML was. Finally got rid of it and traded it for an Infiniti. Whew! what a relief.

The only problem I have had is one of the chrome wheels had a crack in it. It was replaced with no problems, except that it took 2 days to get a replacement. But the dealer gave me a replacement vehicle so there was really no problem. Another problem (but not with the car) is it is very easy to go very fast in this car and not feel like you are even moving, its so smooth for an SUV.

The 2006 model is a giant leap over the past models. (I have previously owned a 1998 ML 320 and a 2000 ML 430.) The level of comfort, luxury and attention to detail is far better in the 2006 vehicle. I finally feel like I'm riding in a Mercedes!

The ride is very smooth. It's very spacious fon the inside. It's easy to park, and/or able to be u-turned in a small space. It doesn't run, but instead flies, while kissing the road. It's a must-have toy, though it gives only 20.5 mpg on the highway.

This is our third ML and this is the best of the lot. Better build overall and better finish. We did test drive four other brands and picked this (though the aging Acura MDX was a close runner) for best of class. We've had it for a month and, thus far, no problems to speak of. If you can get a good price (takes effort) then I think that this is best of the Luxury SUV's. We have two other cars, but this is the one most often out (over Bentley and Miata)

This has been a great car and now with high mileage, I may replace it with a lower mileage one instead of buying a newer or different model. I suggest looking for a 2009-2011 model though, as my mechanic tell me they solved a couple problem areas. Still, the 2006 has been very reliable and cost to upkeep has been less than anticipated.

Do Not Purchase this vehicle. I wish I can show the receipt for this vehicle because you're better off buying a vehicle from other sources because the amount of payment for repair is not equal to owning this vehicle. I need a time machine to talk to myself of never purchasing, co-signing this vehicle because the quality is all aesthetic and each part of the vehicle is expensive with expensive "mechanics" that will siphon as much money from you as they can. Mercedes Benz seems to rely their profit from consumers paying and over paying for maintenance that should not be required. Where is the picture upload for my receipt in which these people are trying to steal money from me after purchasing these vehicles. PLEASE PLEASE BOYCOTT MERCEDES BENZ DEALERS AND MERCEDES BENZ PRODUCTS

- Balance Shaft replaced - 8 sensors replaced in 8 month span - 2 Ignition coils replaced - MAF sensor replaced - ECU Connector replaced - Headlight wiring insulation cracked (and shortcut) - The wheel wells are covered in some kind of fabric(?) which will come loose - Rear bulbs keep burning out - Subwoofer blown - Rear windshield wiper does not complete cycle - Interior vents adjusters falling apart (glued?) - Ratting in left front door - Rear hatch rattling - Lots of rattling when interior is cold - Seat Belt lock stops working - Rear ashtray fell apart - Idling erratic I traded it in for an Acura MDX, what a breeze, no rattles, smooth ride, and all options standard

It was hard to find a loaded ML500, and I had to pay the price, but IT was worth it! Smooth just dosn't describe it. It will get up and go. I had an ' 03 E500 before this with good luck and service. I have had and still own large GMC SUV's but this is in another class, Distinctive body style, not a hybrid. You can't confuse this with a Toyota. Great attention to detail. Benz did it up right!

This car's exceptional styling belies the fact that just about everything that could go wrong with it will! It regularly goes into the shop with the unexpected. Brakes lasted less than 1 year. Transmission dealybop less than 3 months. Many more repairs----all costly. Never buy this car without an extended warranty!

The driving is very smooth, it handles exceptionally well. I love the design a lot. I enjoy the stereo system and the electrical features. The trunk space is enormous and the advantage of moving the rear seats are an A plus.
