DON'T BUY!
I can't believe nobody has mentioned the balance shaft gear failure! This is very common issue in all Mercedes Benz cars that have the M272 engine in it. This is a major issue that costs over 5K to replace and that's if your engine is not destroyed by the metal that goes through your engine as this gear/sprocket fails. Do a little research and see for yourself there are multiple class action lawsuits regarding this matter and since 2010 MB USA fails to accept responsibility and sticks its customers with this huge repair bill! Beware this issue starts with the P0016 together with the P0017 engine code with failure soon to follow! Also shame on Edmunds for not listing such a well known issue!
Major defect with Mercedes engine components
The overall reliability for the 2006-2007 W203s is excellent until you encounter failure of the balance shaft gear. My father owns the 2006 model, and the component failures that he experienced with his car are now mirrored at precisely the same mileage on mine. 1) The thermostat valve tends to fail after around 100,000 km. 2) More importantly, the balance shaft gear fails after around 130-140,000 km. This is a MAJOR DEFECT that MB declines to recall. Essentially the gear wears out prematurely, and if not replaced, the engine will eventually fail. The repair cost is $5-6,000. As a consumer, this is unacceptable. Shame on Mercedes-Benz.

2007 C230 Sport Sedan
Beautiful car. Looked at various alternatives including the 3 series, Lexus IS, Acura TL, and Infiniti G35. Ultimately, this car had the perfect balance of looks, quality, value, performance, style and roominess for my wife and I.
My Dream Car
I have wanted a C230 for a long time. I finally sold my 2007 Ford Fusion and bought a used 2007 C230 Sport. I love this car. Man was it an upgrade from my Fusion. I have read a couple of reviews on here that people have written. There was one person that knocked the C230 on driving in snow. HELLO! It is rear wheel drive. It doesn't matter what brand of car it is. There pretty much isn't a rear wheel drive that is going to be good in the snow. So far the only problem that I have had is my check engine light. I plan on taking it to the MB dealership. I am not worried about it because it is still under the factory warranty. I am looking forward to owning this C Class for many years
Love my 2007 Mercedes-Benz C280 4Matic!
I've owned this car for about a month. It had slightly over 91,000 miles on it at the time of purchase, which isn't bad considering the car is 10 years old. I terminated the lease on my 2015 Chevrolet Cruze 7 months early because I really liked this Mercedes. I kept going on the dealer's website to admire it for months. Finally, I'd made up my mind and got it! Let me tell you straight up, driving this car is a religious experience, I kid you not. Acceleration is out of this world, the engine just keeps on revving, lots of torque at very low RPMs. And then there's the sound... Sounds like a sports car, very nice animalistic growl. Handles like a dream and extremely comfortable. It has a few dings and scratches, again, the car is 10 years old. The only thing I somewhat miss is a modern infotainment system. I've grown accustomed to just connecting my smartphone to it and enjoy my music. However, it has a 6 disk CD changer in the glove compartment and in dash CD player and I have about 600 CDs, so I'm good there. It does have blue tooth, unfortunately it can only be paired with older circa 2007 flip phones. So those were the only trade offs. I'll tell you, I got tired of driving these tin boxes with asthmatic 4 cylinder engines, turbo charged or not. This car puts most brand new vehicles to shame. Ok, so I've put around 8,000 miles on the car. Good news first. 1.The car is still a blast to drive and handles well in the snow. We have pretty nasty snow storms here in Cleveand, so I was quite impressed. I recommend switching to comfort mode when driving in the snow, as the transmission starts in second gear to prevent wheel spin. 2. The car came pre-wired with an outdated iPod 30 pin male connector. I've ended up buying an Aluratech Bluetooth amplifier from Staples with a 30 pin female connector which can be paired with your Android or IPhone (I have a Samsung smartphone). The Harman Kardon system recognized it instantly, so now I'm able to stream my music with an amazing sound clarity. Don't even bother with FM transmitters, all you get is static. The only downside, you can't change tracks using your steering wheel controls. In-dash controls won't work, either. So you'll have to use your phone's music player to change tracks. The steering wheel volume control buttons work fine, however. And now not so good news. 1. Check engine light came on a couple of months ago. Mercedes-Benz dealer said it could be either tumble flap (which they said was sticking) or oxygen intake sensors. They wanted almost $700. So I took it to a local Firestone shop. They were able to replace the sensors for $225. The check engine light disappeared and hasn't come on yet. Now, the tumble flap may still be sticking, but the check engine light hasn't come on yet, so I'm not going to worry about it. It's not affecting neither acceleration nor MPGs, so all is well for now. 2. A suspension noise (coming from the front of the vehicle) has developed recently. Sounds like panging. Firestone said all four springs are broken and have to be replaced at some point. $1500 for front ones or $2400 for all. The noise is normally heard at low speeds or while braking before a red light. On certain days it's prominent, other times (especially during rain or snow) there's no noise at all. The handling seems to be unaffected, so I'm going to wait on that one. To sum things up, I'm still enjoying the car. It's my daily driver, very reliable, apart from those issues . During the temperatures well below zero, the car would always start without hesitation. It has also been inexpensive to maintain, two oli changes, first one was done by the dealer ($115), the second one by Firestone ($105). Take my advice, take it a local shop. One year later, fixed front suspension (ball joints and connecting rods), that took care of the noise I mentioned earlier. It wasn't cheap ($2400), but it was worth it. The noise disappeared. Eventually, all four springs would have to be replaced. It's still fun to drive and is still my daily driver. The interior still looks good for an 11-year-old car. The air conditioner is ice cold. All lights and switches work as intended, everything lights up. The factory sun roof works beautifully. No issues with transmission or engine. So apart from a few mechanical issues the car has been a pleasure to own and drive.

1st time Benz owner-initial impressions
Decided to make the move to a Mercedes for $20 more a month than what I was driving, preowned end lease C280 4matic with 30k miles. The car feels and looks as tight as when it left Germany so it seems. The ride is smooth, very responsive and quiet. Feels larger than it is. Interior design is "simply sophisticated", lots of functions with basic no nonsense finish, yet textured with the brilliance only found in a Mercedes. Shifting is smooth, good acceleration and with little engine noise. The car glides at 55 mph and above, so sweet. Interior cabin sound is nil. The sound system is second to none period(oem), as Harmon-Kardon is known for. Overall exceptional value preowned for a 3 year old.
Lowest Model Range But Highest Standards.
Bought 2007 used w/11k runs like a Swiss watch. This car has precision DNA from the quality of fit and finish to highly responsive handling. Replaced oil and tires....that's it. Value for $$ would be difficult to beat. When you look forward to running to the store for milk just to drive your car (even of you don't need milk) you know you have something special.
lst Time Mercedes Owner
Purchased my C280 AWD in Oct. '06. The ride is truly smooth. It takes road bumps with no problem. The sound system is great and the navigation system gets me where I want to go without getting lost. I had to take the car back to the service department since it was surging forward when my foot came off the brake. They discovered it was down a 1/2 quart of transmission fluid (and this is a brand new car). Needless to say, I'm gonna keep my eyes open to this potential problem.
Best value ever!
Bought this in 2007 with 8k miles. Love this car. handles well in sport mode, very peppy, great shifting with 7 speed. Superb mileage, over 30 highway. Comfortable and great in corners.
Excellent Bargain for a great dependable and good looking car !
07 auto c230 , Obtained Ownership 59k in Oct. 2009 The carfax was clean, trans. replaced at 49k by MB. I took the car and was impressed for a 2.5L that it had some performance. I am aware of the balance shaft problem. I had a build date of SEPT 07, so I was in the clear. The transmission shifted smooth and responsive. I always changed the oil with Mobil Synthetic 0W-40. Solid suspension, smooth car, felt safe. Very comfortable car even on long and short drives. I would get about 17city, 33hwy and always filled it with 93 Octane. Lost it during Hurricane Sandy with 84k. Let me just clarify if you maintain the car with a good quality of gas and oil you shouldn't have issues.
After 1 year
I purchased a CPO 280 instead of a new C class, cost was not the issue thought the 2007 drove better. After 1 year and 15,000 I really like everything about this car. Ride is superb in all weather and it holds the road perfectly. Quiet, comfort, very good MPG and zero problems.
Please help me find a new version of this car
We bought this car 10 years ago with 80k miles. It has never once has a problem. It is definitely the absolute best car I have ever driven. Its fun. Its quiet. It shifts seamlessly , the acceleration is amazing, the steering is amazing...in fact, that is the one thing that I have not found on any other car I have ever driven. Its effortless, but firm....like you can feel the weight of the car through the steering wheel and you feel connected with the car. My only sadness is that I am looking for a new car with bluetooth and a few other upgrades and I can not replace the driving experience of this car.. Any thoughts or recommendations would be helpful. My husband drives a Porsche Cayenne and even that isn't as nice as this car. Someone else said this was a religious experience and they are right. wow! I wish mercedes would do this again and again.

2007 c-230
I found the 2007 C230 a very reliable and a great performance together with the Mercedes-Benz quality. The car is compact and very agile that makes it a very impressive car. The price is also a great thing
Could be better
Car drives great. Average around 30mpg on the highway. Chrome is coming off the gear shifter and cup holder. Cig. lighter does not work, door sensor for windows/sunroof does not work. Dealership fixed door sensor once already. Radio stopped working. Electronics on this car seem to be the weakest point, plus cheap interior parts. 1,000 miles before last oil change the check oil light come on, checked and was 4 qts low on oil. Car only has 43,000 miles on it and doesn't smoke and isn't driven hard. A/C smells like a used tampon on fresh air. I assume it's the fresh air filter. Had to replace both front fender liners - very easy to break.
A Step Above the Rest
This car has well surpassed my expectations. It is a joy to drive and an excellent ride. I read mean reviews before purchasing and the negative things people had to say are bad opinions. The service on the car is 200 dollars, but it only needs it every 12000-13000 miles that is three synthetic oiol changes in a Chevy, do the math. No power at take off, seven speed automatic that you never feel shift, put your foot in it a little. By far the best car I have ever owned. Will update in six months.
OK ride
This vehicle is a somewhat marginal improvement over the 2004 model we had owned previously. The additional horsepower is welcomed and clearly evident over the 2004. The 7 speed transmission also boosted the long distance MPG to a surprising and respectable 31-32 average. If there is one complaint, it would be the excessive wind noise eminating from the driver side window. To date, all attempts to have the problem rectified have failed. I suppose we will have to just live with the problem until its time to trade again. However, this seemingly small defect will certainly impact our decision to buy a Benz in the future.
This is a great little car for the money
Bought this car for the wife. She absolutely loves everything about it. This car is a third car for us and it is perfect for running errands and making trips to the supermarket. The build quality of this car is amazing. No quite enough power for my taste.
Mercedes C230 Great Car
I tried the Infiniti G35, Lexus ES 330, BMW 330i and the Jaguar X series. The Mercedes has a comfortable ride as if you are on a cloud. The build quality? Of course, Mercedes quality all the way! The car is very exciting and very fast. I have put over 10,000 miles on the car . No transmission problems like Lexus and no warranty issues like Infiniti. The car has a Mercedes-Benz S series feel and look to it. My friend bought the Lexus brand and now has traded it in for a Honda. I am thankful to God I chose the Mercedes over all the other vehicles
Fantastic Car!
Have had this car for 3 weeks, and can say I am thrilled with everything about it. It has a drive quality unlike any other vehicle I have ever owned and that includes 3 Lexus'. The interior is extremely well designed and luxurious, standard sound system rocks, and the quiet soundproof cabin combined with the smooth, and I mean smooth, drive makes this car unbeatable. I test drove the Lexus IS250, nice car, not as solid as the MB and the BMW325--no comparison. There's nothing about this car you won't love. It gets compliments everywhere I go, I have the black/stone. I can't say enough good about this car. No manufacturer can compare to the Mercedes in buttery smooth, solid, quiet ride.
Poor Reliability
Initial impressions were good. But then came the problems. Here's a breakdown: 1. Cylinder head replaced due to valve going bad at, get this, 23,000 miles. 2. Left my wife stranded as the fuse box blew a circuit preventing the car from being started. This at just over 26,000 miles. Had to get the car towed to dealership. 3. Left me stranded when the cam positioning sensor went bad at 40,000 miles. Had to get the car towed to dealership. 4. Left me stranded AGAIN when the fuel pump went out a month later. Had to get the car towed to dealership. 5. Found out during this repair I would need to replace both front rotors as they were worn down. At 41,000 miles?
Good Looks. Lacks Interior Features
Wife and I love the looks. In comparison, I wanted the Acura TL which has more ponies, better leather and interior creature features. Wife loved it more than me. Imagine a $38K car without full power passenger seats. The seat/mirror/steering wheel memory is poorly designed. Instead of just pressing a button, you have to hold it in to change from one setting to another. Also, it's not activated from the remote key. No compass. The steering wheel controls for the radio and readouts are confusing and not user friendly at all. I'm in a 2yr lease and can't wait for it to expire. Better choices Lexus I250 or Acura TL or yet BMW330I
Almost Perfect!
The C280 has a distinctive and elegant appearance unlike any other car in its class. This car feels solid. Very pleasant to drive and extremely responsive. This car makes you want to drive. The C280 is the best car I have ever owned or driven. Period.
Incredible car!
I love this car. I just purchased as a certified pre- owned with only 9600 miles like new! I researched like crazy for my next car. I also looked at brand new Honda accords and BMW 1-series. I am so glad that I decided to buy my Mercedes c-class. Great pickup, luxury ride with a sporty feel as well. Solid build. Obvious quality. I give my highest recommendation!
Awesome Car
This car is a joy to drive. I tested the Lexus IS250, Infiniti G35 before buying this car, and hands down, this car outperforms them in both appeal and comfort. I really enyoy driving this car.
Good buy
This seems to be a reliable car with good gas mileage. The interior seems to have a lot of cheap material and the chrome is flaking off of the gear shift. The front cup holder(s) is cheesy. I like the separate lighting for the rear. I like that I can do most of the maintenance like oil changes, filters, brakes, without having to go to the dealership.
I really enjoy my new MB C280 (thought purchased USED with 37K miles)
I love the car. However the repairs are very expensive. I bought it old from an Accura dealer. I like everything about the car
True Luxury in an affordable package!
We love the 3 setting memory seats and power head rests with height adjustment on both sides not just driver. The 7 speed auto transmission with 2 reverse gears is very smooth, giving 30-31mpg highway at 70-75mph on a cross country trip. The power rear sunshade and excellent climate control just seem to work better than in others cars. Surprisingly more leg room and baby seat room than we expected and more than in several much larger vehicles. Most of all, this is just a very quiet, very smooth, truly luxurious vehicle to drive for miles and miles.
Compact, Luxury, Sport Sedan in One
This is an amazing car, i got it used at 21k miles, i like the AMG styling (bumpers),sport handling, excellent brakes cross-drilled rotors up front, engine response is great, love the variable valve timing switching from low to high note. 7-speed auto is awesome and the manu-matic shifting is crisp. Seats are comfortable and controls/buttons are placed within reach. Trunk space is big and lots of room.
7 speed automatic is a plus
I drove the Lexus IS250 and looked at the BMW 3 series. The C230 is my favorite by far. The car has a great feel for the road, and handles like a dream. Ample power from the 2.5 liter V6 really gets you up to speed in a hurry. On the highway, the C230 likes to fly. I find myself having to set the speed control to avoid excessive speeds. My highway mileage is better than the EPA estimates of 25mpg. I have gotten 29mpg on two 300 mile trips with the cruise set at 80.
My "new" 176000 mile 2007 Mercedes C280 4matic
I am very pleased with this car so far. I am with an auto repair facility and we have serviced this car for the previous owner since 2012. Mercedes-Benz builds a quality automobile designed to go the distance. Repairs can be pricey on these cars if you depend on your local Mercedes-Benz dealer to provide your maintenance and repairs, but they are reasonable if you do your own work, or have a dependable independent garage do your work. I purchased the car with 174000 miles on the odometer and expect the car will make it to 250000 miles before it needs any major engine or transmission work. Do have a complete pre-purchase inspection done before buying one and you will likely have a car that you will fall in love with!

Outrageous maintenance costs
My 2007 Mercedes Benz C280 4matic was the worst financial decision I have ever made and will never own another. The car has just under a100,000 miles and I've put over $5,000 in repairs. A few days ago the check engine light came on so once again back to the dealership. The called with a repair estimate for $6,000. Really? I declined the repairs and will be buying a new car today. I doubt if I will get much for trade in given the repair expenses. So it's been an expensive car to own and no resale value. And it didn't even reach 100,000 miles

Tight Handling Safety Features
Really safe and solidly built. Leased 15000 mile contract. Mileage acceptable, sporty and classy compact. Easy to park. Great highway performance. Enjoy driving it.
Love this car
I love driving this car. I have black on black and it is beautiful. Very smooth drive. I have another car and never want to drive it any more. The dealership told me not to press it until it goes over 1000 miles but yesterday I couldn't resist. You could never tell I was over 90. Could be a bad thing. Everyone loves the look of the car. I am short but I could see how someone taller would like more leg room.
Luxurious Sports Car
People may think the “C” Class is an entry level Benz but there is nothing entry level about it. Smooth riding, acceleration to spare, road gripping, comfortable body hugging seats etc... This car is always an absolute joy to drive. It is an experience not just an A to B vehicle! Sit back and enjoy the ride... as they say it’s more about the journey than the destination.

Beautifully finished sport sedan
Looked at the BMW 330 and Volvo S60R. Both of these vehicles performed better than the Mercedes in the city, but once you hit the interstate, the Mercedes shines. As far as looks and finish, the Mercedes was the clear winner in my eyes. The thing that put me over the top in favor of the Mercedes is its ability to run on domestic fuel that runs cleaner. That being E85. Also, the performance out of the E85 is better. The gas mileage drops on the highway from 29 to 25 but the cost difference at the pump covers that difference.
Good, happy, could always be better.
I purchased a preowned c230 last summer. It was low miles and had only 16k on it. I drove all the other cars in the class, BMW 3 series, Lexus IS, and Infinity Gs, and A4. MB is the best balance of performance and luxury. It doesn't handle like a 330, and leather isn't as nice as an IS, but I love this car and love MB (have since purchased an SLK). It is very fun to drive, not like a 335 manual, but it looks great, corners well and in comfort mode get decent gas mileage. I did have to fuel pump replaced under warranty at 22K, didn't like that too much, as I felt betrayed by the car I love, but it happens. If I had to purchase again, I would purchase the same car in red rather than silver.
Cool in Black
It's a very good looking car in black, I have not seen a better looking car on the road. I'm glad we didn't choose silver. It's a little sluggish when you punch the accelerator, but we bought it for looks only.
Better buy than Lexus IS and BMW 3-Series
I debated for almost 2 months between the '07 Lexus IS-250 and IS-350 and BMW 3- Series. I was mainly looking for an edgy style and most important AWD for the snow in the Northeast. The IS-250 is nicely appointed but pricey when adding options (low power). BMW is nicely appointed but 328XI AWD does not compare to features of MB C280- 4M. It's nicely designed for '07 (a colleague told me about the MB low quality of past years) and I'm particularly finicky, which is why I even considered an Avalon and VW Passat. But for the total package of Options, Power, Luxury feel and sturdy (or luxury drive if you choose) along with Sirius Sat/Nav and Ipod Integration, there is no comparison in price.
Lovin the C230 Sport
I am very impressed by the fuel economy of this car, especially when I average 70-75 MPH. I get an impressive 27+ MPG. The AMG kit makes the car look far more expensive than the $30K sticker. I took the base car and am totally satisfied not having all the extras. The engine could use about 50 more horses, but the rest of the ride makes up for it.
Interior Electrical Problems
This was my first purchase of a Mercedes. I've always been a Toyota man. Even though this was a used Mercedes C280 I thought the car was a great investment. However, I'm having electrical problems. First, the car unlocks when I'm driving. This is dangerous as I have my grandkids in the back seat many times. Also, the moon roof will not close all the way. I have to hold the button down until the window is closed. I'm bring this car back to New Country Motors hoping they can fix these problems.
Keep it on the road Jack!
I fell in love with the looks of this car from the start! It has plenty of power at top end..but is terrible when you hit the pedal from a stop. The transmission is a select shift so this is your compensation. My biggest complaint is that it pulls to the right and the dealer has yet to correct. I have a hard time keeping it on the road because of this! Don't care for the light blue window tint.
2024 Review - Still Driving It!
I bought this in 2010 with 30k miles. 14 years later, only at 102k. Still, this thing is a beast. Not the great pickup under 50 mph, but that's the only nitpick thing I can come up with. In almost a decade and a half, the only mechanical issue I've ever had was a bad alternator, but that wasn't until 2023. If you need a great used car / first car, this is it!

No Regrets
Just purchased and drove home about 50 miles. Surprisingly quiet and we got a little over 29 mpg on the way home. Read many reviews before buying and am not disappointed, car is rock solid and drives like a dream. Can't find any other car that drives like a Mercedes Benz. Would say car is good mix of size, sporty, economy and safe.
Good first car
This car is my first car, it is very safe, I was going very fast and went over a cement pipe that runs under driveways and then hit a ditch. Car should have flipped but didn't and was very safe. I bought another Mercedes afterward. Love the iPod integration seats are comfortable and car looks great. Seats in back are generously spacey for a small car and trunk is huge. Acceleration is pretty good for a low end end Mercedes. Wheels and tires are great but this runs through tires really fast.
Happy So Far
I bought my C230 Sport off lease, with 19,700 miles on it. So far, I love this car! I have never owned a car that handles as well as the C230 does. There is almost none of the "leaning" effect during sharp higher speed turns. I am not sure if this is due to the suspension or the sport tires, but it is great fun to drive. Having driven the car through a Minnesota winter, I would definitely advise buying snow tires. I didn't and some of my snow day commutes were more exciting than I would have wanted. Other reviewers have indicated that snow tires will make difference. I plan to purchase snow tires next year.
great car.

Concern w/Transfer Case & future quality
Overall I like my C-280. I gave low quality rating b/c of my Transfer Case issue after only 3 yrs. Pros: Handles well in the snow, 27 mpg highway average, looks expensive Cons: Passenger head rest and rear view mirror rattles. To fix I have to keep head rest lowered when seat isn't in use and every so often have to adjust the mirror. Mile marker only does whole #s so can't tell when gone 1/2 mile. CD changer fills glove compartment. At 90K miles, the Transfer Case began making rubbing noise on tight turns. Would have been $500+ repair w/o CPO warranty.
Poor design
I wanted the nav and satellite radio, but my wife didn't care for the satellite radio. It has controls for it but they are fake! Why put controls in someting if it is never going to do anything? You can't add it,only a factory installed option that's stupid! The phone is the same but you can add it for $2000. Also I agree with everyone the memory seat should just be a push button you should not have to hold it!
Amazing
This car is honestly a VERY AMAZING CAR TO AND ITS MANUAL LIKE WHAAT

Disappointed in my first MB
I had always wanted a Mercedes and was very excited when we bought this car brand new last year. Unfortunately, it hasn't been all that I had dreamed of. It is useless in snow/ice -- last year I learned that lesson the hard way with <1" of snow. Our other three vehicles (not MB) were fine with that tiny bit of snow, but not the MB. It also recently stopped dead in the middle of a busy road with me and my little boy in it. It has been at the dealership since last week and they can't get any error codes, so they have no idea what's wrong with it. I am very disappointed in this car and am thinking about selling it because I don't feel safe in it any longer. It only has 7500 miles on it!
