I really like this car. It is among the most stylish cars on the road and has a zoom-zoom identity that is well deserved. I chose the white. This car is the perfect balance of practicality with enough spirit and energy to let me know that I am not deprived of anything, yet the price is right!

I have had this car for over a year. Bought it brand new in Sept. 2003 and have over 34000 miles. This car is absolutely great as a commute car. It is great on gas, easy to park and can hold a lot of stuff. I bought this car in Florida on my way to Texas for job relocation. I turned in a minivan packed with items. Everything fit in the Protege5 when I put the back seats down. I have never had a problem with it. The Bose sound system is great. The seats are comfortable. The inside details do look a little cheap but then again this is a cheap car. With a 4 year warrant, you can't go wrong. I will buy another Mazda.

Awesome vehicle. Looked at the civic, corolla and finally the proteze 5. spent weeks on deciding civic or corolla, but on the first visit to the mazda dealer, loved the car and bought it an hour later. Even my kids love it and will not ride in the jeep anymore. This one drives good and it is really fun driving around in the city. Handles tight turns very well.

I bought this car new in Dec. 2003 and it was the first new car purchase I have ever made. I loved the outside appearance and the five-door hatch design. I picked one that has about every option except the leather. With all the options there is little left to be desired when inside. Larger passengers have complained about not having enough room and four adults are a little cramped. Overall this is a very nice car for what I purchased it for. The fuel economy has never been all that great and the chrome wheels don't look great after two winters. The suspension is strictly for smooth roads. CD changer gets stuck occasionally. Heater is slow to warm up. Tires expensive to replace.

This car is the RX-8 of wagons. The car handles like a dream but is lacking in the horsepower/torque area (just like the RX-8). Had the car for a month and has been in the shop 3 times already. Everything that went wrong got fixed under warranty and now i will put the car to the test to see how reliable a Mazda really is. I have never owned a Mazda (I am a Nissan lover; had 3 and never had trouble). Purchased car because I got a great deal on it and the Protege has been ranked as one of the best entry level cars. Hope the car holds up like my Nissans.

I love my Pro 5. The only aspect I would change is the headroom. I am 6' tall and I like to keep the seat bottom a little higher for better visibility. Mine has a sunroof, which decreases the headroom a bit, so I'm right at the roof. Of course, I wouldn't mind a little more HP and better gas mileage, but I think it is a good balance. I've found the interior transporting capacity to be surprisingly large with the back seats folded all the way down. The seats aren't the most comfortable, but the leather feels good and has been durable so far. The ride is a little firm, but with the low profile tires, this helps offset the smallish HP when turning and maneuvering.

I've had my Pro5 for less than 4 months and it's got 14,0000 miles on it. I've driven it in the city, the freeway, the mountains and on the twisties full of camping gear, a dog with a bike on the roof and it's still a dream. All the car I need, though if I were dreaming, I'd throw in about 20 more horses. One draw back, I got the leather interior. It looks great and is very comfortable, but when folding the back seats dow, the hinges left grooves in the leather. Both the dealership and Mazda have been unwilling to do anything about it but overall the car is a blast to drive, more fun than my the GTI 1.8, really practical and turns heads.

This is a great, reliable car with snappy handling. I average about 28 mpg here in Philly driving 50/50 city/highway. I'm at 35K with no maintenance issues so far. Still on the original Dunlop tires. Won't go for the Dunlop's as a replacement. The tires are an odd size and only a few companies make an exact all-season match. Switching to a 205 profile seems a good compromise although mileage will drop a little bit.

The Protege5 is fun to drive and a practical little hauler. The car gets great gas mileage -- about 27 in the city -- yet it has plenty of pep when getting on the freeway or out of trouble. Fold down second seats make for a nice-sized flat cargo area. The paint allows for a great shine and the wheels are quite stylish. I have gotten rave reviews from neighbors and friends. Great little car.

I purchased this car new in August 2003 and am now approaching 38K miles. It has the 5 speed manual transmission and no other options. I wanted a daily driver that was fun and very reliable. The car has exceeded my expectations in all areas. I have had *no* unscheduled maintenance, repair, or warranty problems of any kind. Mileage has been 30mpg (75% freeway, 25% city). And the car has been great fun to drive. It has nimble, precise handling and a taut but not harsh suspension. The engine is peppy, but more than 130 h.p. would have been even better. The lack of a limited slip differential is the only shortcoming that frequently detracts from the daily driving experience.

The first few things I noticed is the the MP5 feels sportier, and for some reason I wanted to sit up straight. Given that, the interior felt really roomy. Definatly a lot of head room in all 5 seating positions. The bucket seats in the front feels like they are gripping you, reassuring you through turns. The 6spkr + sub stereo system was nice (even though woofer was weak), good compared to other stock sound systems. As for the downsides, I agree with the editor, but definatly a fun car until you fill it up with 5 people.

I've loved the Matrix ever since it came out, and was sure I was going to get it, UNTIL I saw that Protege5. The Matrix is so much bigger and less sport than the Protege5, which is a huge plus! Don't get me wrong, the Matrix is still nice, but side by side, the Protege5 outbeats Toyota's newest model. Also, feature-to- feature, you'll be crazy NOT to choose the Protege5!

Have only 300 miles on it so far but have loved every single one. Everything has been great so far. Love the crisp handling and the Stereo. Test drove the Matrix and for grins, the Vibe but neither seemed to have been built as well or incorporated the same feature set. I purchased the loaded version with every option and was still under $20,000. What a bargain. I have seem some complaints about more HP but don't see why. If it can get to 65 MPH in under 9.5 seconds(which it does), that's plenty fast for me :-) Besides, more HP means less MPG :-(

This is my first Mazda and I have been pleasantly surprised with my driving experience.I wanted a car that was both a workhorse and a stylish eye-catcher. The Protege5 wears both hats really well. People tend to give me that envious look at stoplights. The P5 has the appearance of a more expensive crossover yet it is economical and eco- conscious. It has some excellent features including a well-designed cabin that offers excellent driving vision; a well-designed keyless entry and alarm system--much better than most. I am totally won over by this car and the P5 has been a great driving experience for the past 4-months.

I bought my Protege5 to replace my first car (a 94 Grand Am). I looked at used and new cars all over NJ, but when I saw this dark blue baby sitting in the back lot I fell in love. My Protege5 is basic with only floor mats and wheel locks added. I love the 5 speed tranny, but I sometimes wish I had 6 to row, and the buzzy 2.0L is lack luster after about 70mph (and 3500rpm in 5th). The rear eats up just about everything and my 6ft-something friend can sit in the back (short trips only) with little complaint. The radio and HVAC controls are VERY easy to use.

Incredible brakes and handling. The tiptronic transmission makes an otherwise so-so 4 speed automatic more than tolerable. The car is built incredibly well. Fit and finish are Lexus quality. Interior driver controls are excellent, ride is smooth and communcative, outward vision excellent. Talk about a car that is easy to drive. It provides a sense of sureness.

This is probably the 5th car I've owned over the years (I tend to keep them for 8 years or so), the 2nd Mazda, and my favorite. It's fun to drive, gets reasonably good mileage, and turns and parks easily. I've not had any issues with it, my only gripe being that it came with high-performance tires that cost major dollars to replace. But since that's the only money besides regular maintenance that I've had to shell out on it, I guess I can't complain too much. :)

I have a little over 400 miles on my 03 P5. I have owned Mazdas in the past and feel confident about the quality. I bought this car as a second car to carry my bicycle around on a bike rack. The fit and finish is as good as my Infinity G35 but the quality of the paint is even better. I bought this car brand new loaded with automatic, leather, sunroof, dimming mirors, ABS, side airbags and polished wheels for $16,300! Does any other car compete at this price level and quality? Answer No.

Restored a 70 VW that got totalled (cell phone driver nailed me) so needed a replacement. Bought a new Saturn ION and when my son brought his new Protege 5 over and let me drive it I knew the ION was going back. What a neat little car. I was driving my Z28 Camaro for a while and while the Mazda is no Z28 it sure gives me the ride and feel of a sporty car. Now, if they could fit a small block Chevy in that thing they couldn't build' em fast enough. I like everything about and the Laser Blue color turns everyones head. and all for 15,000. How do they do it.

This is by far the most fun vehicle I have owned. Looks cool and handles awesome. I bought new and planned on owning it a long time. I properly maintained this vehicle from day one. At around 20K my MP5 started having problems. Squeaks from the front and rear suspension over bumps. The rear noise was fixed, but after multiple visits the front was never fixed. During warm weather, the vehicle smells strongly of coolant. The radiator was replaced, but it still smells of coolant. The auto-transmission leaks -- multiple visits, multiple attempts to fix, still leaks on my floor! Worst of all, the car intermittently would die after pulling away from a stop. Looked at many times. Never fixed.

I bought my Mazda brand new in 2003. Today it has 160,000 miles on it and it is still going strong. It has a few minor mechanical problems but that is caused by just normal wear and tear. This is hands down the most reliable car I have ever owned. The styling is outstanding and it is super fun to drive. I would not hesitate in replacing it with another Mazda. The only drawbacks are where the cup holders are situated. I have a 5- speed and when you are in first or third gear, I continually hit the cups in the holder and sometimes I have to move them to get the car into gear. I do wish it had an inside hatch release, but other than these small things I have no complaints.

I have owned this car for 2 weeks now and love it. I did some research on this particular vehicle and found that it was an excellent car. I checked out consumer reports online and found that other owners thought this was an excellent vehicle also. It was rated very high. I would recommend this car to anyone with or without children. I bought this vehicle for a second car and have only been driving it around town so fuel economy for me hasn't been that great, but driving around town won't get you that great mileage anyway. I really got a great deal on it also which is always a plus! I will be back to rate it again after I get some more mileage on it.

Loaded with standard features I only added ABS, Leather, and 6 disk CD/Moonroof...all for a little over 17,000. With the flexibility of folding back the rear seats for cargo and sporty features this car is a must! Moving from a Jetta GLX this car doesn't have quite the same power but once you get it in the higher RPM's, it moves! Very fun to drive!

I've had my Mazda Protege 5 for about 3 1/2 years and I absolutely love it. In the beginning I was a bit wary of the fact that it was a wagon rather than a four door, but I had to get it since it was more practical. I love the leather seats. The sound system is amazing, however I change my stereo deck to an Alpine which made the bass a 100 times better. The styling is amazing; one of a kind. Handling is excellent, the aceleration is not too bad for a four cylinder. I especially love the 4 speed tiptronic, which allows you to rev beyond the 6,500 rpm. I wouldn't suggest it, but I've taken it up to 7,000 rpm. Nothing is wrong. It's extremely reliable and no problems whatsoever.

Excellent car for the money. Leather interior, all power doors, windows, moon roof very good stereo w/ 6cd in-dash player, 6 speakers and subwoofer. Excellent mileage average 30 mixed. 73,000 miles and runs/looks exactly as brand new. Complaints include very noisy driving conditions. Engine revs very high, 5 speed needs to be upshifted very quickly to gain speed Car will not win many races. Not the most quiet, compliant ride but again this is a compact car.

I just hit 5000 miles on the car and it is still a blast to drive. This car has a firm and sporty suspension that makes winding roads fun to drive through. The engine is sufficient to provide a sporty feel yet provide good fuel economy at the same time. I am glad I waited to get the 2003 model with the factory perforated leather (less than $400 invoice price) because it really makes the whole car seem like it cost a lot more than it did. When I describe the vehicle to family and friends on the phone as a small economy car that I paid $15,800 for they are really surprised when they actually see it!

I have owned this carr since Aug 2003. I bought this car just before I drove to my first duty station while I was in the Army. This car has made several trips across the US. I have not had to do anything beyond routine maintenance yet to this vehicle. I love this car and plan on keeping it for an extended period of time. I average around 27-29 mpg. I have the 5 speed and notice that it is not as easy to shift in the morning when it is cold. That's to be expected when you have moving gears. I just did my 60,000 mile check up and needed a new timing belt & battery but my car had been mostly in hot weather. I love this car and will own it until it can't be driven anymore.

Love this car!! It is one of the most fun cars I have ever driven. Unbelieveable room in the driver seat. I am 6'4' and have more room then I did in my Blazer. Wish I had the compass and temp. Love the handling but the braking could be better.

My wife needed a car to replace our failing saturn. I looked at everything in this price range. Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, VW, Kia, and all the americans. I was impressed with the style; it wasn't a little turtle like other brands. I'm 6'2 and when I sat in it, it had plenty of room. It drove great and was very peppy on the interstate. The price allowed us to get the sunroof, the abs breaks, and the side airbags. Very cool car. Ours is a 2002 model. After 8 months of ownership, I'm still very happy.

I purchased a 2002.5 model when they first came out and I currently have 9k miles on the car. Option include the sport automatic, leather, and moonroof. I was debating between this and a WRX but at the time, Subaru wasn't offering any financing specials. I am very happy with the P5's handling, sporty looks, and quality. I would definitely recommend the P5 to anyone looking for a great package at a great price. The only problem that I have so far is wishing it had more power (that's what i get for driving a wrx first). But this will soon be fixed with a turbo addition via Flyin' Miata.

I tested many cars this summer, notably the Impreza and the Matrix--the Pr5 was the best of all of them hands down. Better confort, control, design, features and price (great incentives). I cannot recommend this car enough. I've owned my own for about a week now and it's been unequivicably positive experience. All my friends want one of their own, too.
