Consider the manual trans.
Purchased this vehicle in May 2010 with low miles. The interior build quality is quite good, if a little boring, with few squeaks or rattles. Economical and "spacious", it's not exactly fun to drive but gets from A to B with little fuss. The term boring aptly describes this vehicle. The frustration comes in with the infamous flashing "hold" light; replaced the component the diagnostic told me to replace, to no avail. The trouble code causes the transmission to operate only up to 3rd gear. If you're considering this vehicle, get one with the manual transmission as they were not plagued with the problems of the automatic. Haven't had any other mechanical issues.
very poor
This car right now after driving 3 or 4 miles engine quit.some time start right away or some time you have to try several time.I don't want to spend too much money to fix it. What i learn this car is totally not dependable.I will never buy any Mazda again.
Piece of @$%*&#!
I HATE THIS CAR. Problems almost since day 1. Tachometer quit within first month. Needed tranny at around 50k mi. Tape deck quit. Power antennae died and clear coat started going second year. Lighted plastic door lock covers disintegrated. Rear view mirror falls off repeatedly. Side view mirror control broken. Locks ALWAYS freeze up in wet/cold weather. Often have to unlock shift lock that has mysteriously locked itself. There's more but I'm out of room.
I will buy another mazda
I have had this car for 6 months now it has 400,000 km on it now. It is the most reliable vehicle I have owned in a while. I drive the crap out of this car and it just wont die, I would buy another Mazda if they are all like this
JUST SAY NO TO THE AUTOMATIC
This car blows. 3 TRANSMISSIONS (AT & 4cyl). 3 trannys at 101,000 miles. This thing has cost me a fortune. It finally died today- estimated 750 in repairs to pass inspection. FORGET IT!!! Problems with axles, water pump, tires, the list goes on & on. Worst car I EVER owned & no satisfaction from dealership. Trannys blow up after about 15,000 miles, everytime dealership fails to back up. Hey Mazda, if you're listening, BITE ME!! I take EXTREMELY good care of my vehicles & this is what I get. I had a '96 Honda Accord that i put 130K miles on, only having to replace timing belt & minor "maintence items".
Overall good car, but has some problems
My '93 626 has only 94,000 miles on it, yet I just had to have the AT changed out. The engine seems to being doing fine, however there are big problems with the paint (clear coat failing) and the rubber door gaskets. In addition, it used to have lit plastic key lock covers so you you see to get your key in at night, but those went after a couple of years. Mazda should have stuck with standard metal covers.
Bought "Brand New" (1 owner)
This car has undoubtedly been the most reliable transportation I've ever purchased. With 160,000 miles on it has been as reliable as I could ask for.
I've drove it to hell and back
I bought this car as a first car so i did'nt really care about it. I bought it with 140308 miles on it, and now 8 months later i've managed to place 15,000 miles on it.. Nothing major has gone wrong with it, I race a lot of people and happily to say I've won a lot of them. It's a rugged car, I've had to replace a couple engine parts but in time they go anyway. Now since I've beat it into the ground my engine burns oil.. but to show you, It's NOT dead yet, "It takes a beatin and keeps on ticking" ~that's true!
great car
This is a great car, great gas mileage, fun to drive, good design, inexpensive, and just an all around great car
Going..going...going
My Mazda has been good to me. I bought it used and I got it with 140,000 and it now has 161,860 . I have put a new exhaust system on it, which has already began to fall apart . Also a new distrubutor . It has been a tough car, and I must say I havent been easy with it. I have been in two accidents, 1st one did'nt help with bald tires and the second one I was doing 95mph and the car lost grip in the rain.. and out of a 95mph accident it only dented my passenger doors. The car is firm and well built. From me not taking care of it I have caused it to burn oil. I'm in the market for a Pontiac Grand Am.
My Awesome 626
This is a fun, sporty, family sedan! I love my 626. Mine is loaded with options like moonroof, cd changer, anti- lock brakes, heated mirrors, alarm/keyless entry, alloy wheels, and a 6 speaker premium sound system. I love it! And it cost $2500!!!
Very Nice First Car
This was the very first car I bought from a dealership (as opposed to buying from my parents). It's got FANTASTIC amounts of room for front and rear passengers and trunk space. Considering the high mileage, we have had very few repairs and none costing more than $800. Our mechanic says it will last forever. I have the stick- shift model and highly recommend it.Manuals rule! My husband wants to trade it in for a new car and we're having problems finding something that will match the space for a reasonable price.
Complete nightmare
I initially bought my 1993 Mazda 626 ES from a private party because it seemed like a good value at the time. Boy was I proven wrong! Here's a short list of the things I've had repaired on it within the last year: transmission rebuild ($2300), replaced right and left control arms ($625), replaced compressor ($1300), replaced left and right calipers ($450), refilled freon ($125), the list goes on and on. Talk to any other person who owns a Mazda 626 built between 1993 and 2001, and they'll tell you the transmission is going to fail. It's not a question of "if" but rather "when." Do yourself a favor and pick a different used car. Saturns are nice.
Not a bad car
I bought this car new in '92 and it has been great for me. I has been to Alaska and back, but not without problems. I have replaced the muffler 2x and most of the exhaust system, and the a/c compressor. Doors do not like frozen moisture and keys can bend easily. It gets 34MPG hyw and it loves hills (man trans)Good driver leg room. At 160k the paint is beginning to wearoff. When I replace it I hope to find a car just as good.
214k and running
At 100K the engine developed a ticking valve noise. Replaced HLA's and Oil pump >>> didn't fix the problem. Decided to just drive it until the engine Kaputs... It is now 214k and the engine still ticks when it iddles too long...I guess it doesn't bother me too much other than being a cosmetic thing. Have replaced muffler system (cheap), brakes, and an intake air gasket that was causing a poor iddle. Guess what? Stuff will break on your car, but hopefully your car was built on a Tuesday so that it won't be a Lemon. Oh yea, Consumer Reports said this car was really bad---- go figure--- at 214k I think it is a great car for the money.
My First Ride
It's agreat car, fast, and looks great!
Best Car Ever !!!!!!!!!
THE MAZDA 626 ES V6 IS THE BEST CAR BECAUSE ITS ONE OF THE BEST FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS MADE ITS FASTER THEN THE TOYOTA CANARY AND A LITTLE SLOWWER THEN THE HONDA ACCORD BUT THE MAZDA IS 5000 DOLLORS CHEAPER SO BY A MAZDA 626 ES V6 MANUAL AND HAVE A CAR THAT WILL LAST OVER A DECADED OR
good money spent
You can expect to be skeptical when buying a car with 175,000 miles, but 2 years later, and at over 200,000, I am very pleased. After only one exhaust repair and a tune-up. This machine still starts, runs, and drives good. Acceleration is good for a 4 banger. Interior is nice and comfortable. Cruise work fine (most of the time). AC needs recharged but has to be converted to the new R-13a system so I don't fool with it. Engine does some different ticks, one especially bad when car idles for more then 5 minutes. Window switches will stick eventually, and wear out motors; beware! Other then these small things car was well worth the money spent. I would recommend for new drivers. Very easy to drive.
So far so good
This is my 1st car i ever own, so I don't have any car to compare with.. The speaker is great, I don't even think of the replacement of the speaker. I like the power sunroof and power windows, plenty of legs space for driver. Good acceleration (4 cyl, 5 speed manuel). Engine is a bit noisy. I hope this car goes fine until i graduate.
great car
I have owned this car for three years and have not had any problems with it. Great runner and great gas millage 33mpg. I have got 170,000 miles on it and still gonig strong.
Japanese Ford
I know Ford heavily influenced Mazda in '93 when this piece was made, which is why I had to replace the distributor, and now have to replace the transmission because IT WONT GO IN REVERSE!!! A popular problem with this car. If it's an AT with 100,000+ DO NOT BUY IT!!!!!!
Good design & fun to drive.
Bought my 626 ES cronos in june 94 with ex. warranty 6/120k for parts. The 1st few yrs I had lots of little problems all under warranty. Don't like the automatic because it broke at 60k miles. It shifted hard into 2nd and early into 4th. Never had problems with ac, engine, frame, electronics. Rear calipers got stuck from corrosion and front springs both broke from corrosion but fixed under warranty, etc. Last 4 yrs, was trouble free. Things fixed never came back to haunt me. To be fair, the later yr 626's were better reliability. I had more problems with service trying to convince them of problems. I spoke to the manager and things got fixed.
Poor tranny
I bought this car around 7-8 months ago and I've had so much problems with the tranny that I had to go to the shop three times, and still I don't like the sound of the engine when revved up to 2000rpm. Overall the car is good, it handels well, accelerates good, though a bit of a body roll when turned sharply.I stiil have another problem, the check engine light turns on when I reach speeds of 70mph or higher and when I turn off the car and turn it back on, it's gone.I think the problems with the tranny came from the owner, he used to live on high elevations and the tranny is automatic, so going up and down caused it to break.
Mazda 626 1993 93000 miles green
Every replacement part for this car is expensive. Struts $235/each, O2 sensor $215, temp/fan sensor $65 each, rebuilt tranny $2400. Don't bother with this car. I had to put in all those parts plus a distributor at 93000 miles. The paint is severely faded.
Best I ever owned
Bought it in june 1994. It's now ten years old, I have driven it in the canadian winter every year and up until now, it has'nt cost me a penny in repairs. The only money expended was for brakes, belts, muffler, the usual expected things. There is just a little bit of rust starting to appear in two places. Best car I ever owned.I have a feling that the new Mazda-6 will not be as reliable.
Nice Car
This was my second 626; the first had 200K when I sold it to buy this one. It now has 140K. Its weight to thrust ratio is great (4 cylinder 5 speed), so it makes my wife's Protege 5 feel like a dog. Sure, it's starting to make noises and doesn't ride as nice, but it's paid for and gives me 30 mpg in the city. I'm driving this thing until the wheels fall off.
Excellent considering age- ES V6
this is my first car and i've had it for almost 3 years. it's a 12 year old car but no one believes it. leather, power everything, and sunroof make it seem extra luxurious. first thing i did when i bought it was installed a cd player and found out the factory stereo is awesome. i bought it for $4000 and can probably only get $2300 now, but it's been worth it. i only gave a 7 on the mileage because i get about 23mpg combined city/hwy. but roadtrips i get close to 30mpg on the hwy. i drive about 40 miles every day. only complaint is it needs premium gas but its definitely worth it. the engine really kicks. auto trans seems jumpy at times. i've had to replace a few things, some very expensive.
love this car
I got this car from my sister and fell in love. I replaced the front rotors and put Lexani wheels on it. It is comfortable and fun to drive. If I can get another 50,000 miles out of it I will be well pleased. It's got 195,000 miles and still runs strong.
a real bang for your buck
Love the hunter-green exterior with the 2-tone grey leather interior. The ES with features such as sunroof, V6, leather, power seats-windows- mirrors, manual shifter, 4-wheel disc brakes,16" alloys is all you really need to have a car you can actually show off for a small amount of money. Extremely reliable when paid attention to. Hard to find.
Reliable Family Vehicle
This has been a wonderful vehicle. I have put on over 120,000 miles on this one. I sold my 89' with 120,000 miles for this 93'. No major problems ever and it has never left me without transportation. I believe it will last me until I can afford a mazda 6 station wagon. I recomend this veh to anyone.
Try a MX-3, MX-6, RX-7, or Miata instead
Being the fifth owner, I was expecting some problems, but it was one after another: A shot E.C.U., mufflers, bearings, and the ever notorius transmission problems which still plague me today (until I get a Ford ZX2). The interior is okay, nothing really special, the drive is as smooth for the most part, and the looks are not bad for its time. I reccommend that you stay away from the used early model 626's, and do your homework before you buy a future lemon.
Wonderful car
Was warned about the 4 cyl. auto. so steered away and bought a 6 cyl. manual 5 speed and have loved it ever since. Just regular maintenance over the years. This car owes me nothing and I drive it fast. Wish I knew what to replace it with since I don't trust Ford and their idea of "Mazda".
220K and still going!!
Owned this car for 6 yrs, it has 220k on it and it's still going! Great reliable cheap car got me through college and beyond. Very few expenses.
yo
COool to DddddRive better then a civic
626 review
Solid, reliable car. Few frills, but very reliable with good gas mileage.
still stellar at 200K
bought my 626 in 1999 with 123K. Heating and cooling system replaced at 187K, but other than that absolutely no problems with the car.
Best used car I've purchased!
I purchased this car from my coworker for $800. She's had it since 2002. With the price of fuel this car is awesome! Over 400 miles to a tank. And with carpooling an average of 400 miles every other week I can't complain. The only major prob that I have right now is the suspension and with living in the desert the AC. But with over 187k on the engine I really can't complain. Gonna drive this baby til the engine falls out. Then I'll get another mazda lol.
