i have had 5 cars before this. a vw jetta. a ford ranger, a doge neon. a chevy blazer and a honda civic.and i drive cars like a speed racer and this is by far the best car i have owned. i purchased for 750$ thinking i would get an ok car just to drive for a little while. and then i drove it. and it drives really smooth and is actually kind of fast. this is a very fun car to drive. it drives perfect on the highway and gets great gas millage. about 32mpg. i put 20 dollars every other week and i drive it alot. the tranny shifts perfect. although my shifter is a little loose. wich is no problem. car has 226,xxx miles and still runs strong.

I bought this car for $350 with a bad head gasket because the parents had let their son drive in to school for three years. I put about $600 into fixing it up. Drove it for 4 years without a problem. About 32-34 MPG at first, and then recently got about 35-38 MPG on freeway. One tank I got 542 miles with just over 13 gallons. That's about 41 MPG! The head gasket went out again last year in the winter and so I bought an oldsmobile because the though of fixing a head gasket in sub-zero weather made me cringe. The olds got about 24 MPG and drove like a boat. I just fixed the mazda and it drives like a racecar and got 37 MPG on the last tank. I love this car!!! The head gasket parts cost $250.

I've owned this car for 11 years and the only major problem was the A/C and dealing with some minor problems with that. This car gets excellent fuel economy, overall over 30mpg. The only other problem was with the sound system. It may have been my fault, blasting the music a bit too loud but i blew 2 out of the four factory speakers about one year ago. I recently replaced all of the speakers and all is fine. Otherwise, no other complaints.

I bought my 626 for my daily commuter with 206,000 miles on her. She is a non turbo, 5 speed manual, she now has 300,500 miles on her and still running strong. Just recently I have had to replace alternator, starter, coil, timing belt and heater blower motor, but what the hay, she has earned all that. I drive her like she's stolen every day, and the worst mileage I've ever gotten once was 29 mpg, the best ever on a road trip has been 42 mpg. I average about 35.5 mpg daily at highways speeds up to 80 mph. I wouldn't trade this girl for anything in the world. I would recommend a 1991 626 LX to anyone. My kids love riding in her because she is so peppy and fast. This is just an all around great car!

With 186,000 miles and $850 from a kid that just graduated from mechanic school and had done alot of work on it for class. I was changing jobs where I needed to drive alot and need a good MPG car with gas prices approaching $4 a gallon and rising. This car has not disappointed at all. I have had to put some money into but nothing expensive and I was able to do the work myself. Its fun to drive with 5-speed and gas mileage is terrific. I bought some wider tires and rims from a 97 626 and it handles great. If it was a hatchback I would have the best vehicle ever. The car has already paid for itself as I have driven it 12,000 miles many of those for work. Great purchase would easily buy again.

Got the car as a gift from my uncle. I've some problems, the clutch pedal gets stuck sometimes, the rim's lip is a little bent so it leaks some air. It has a power steering leak and somewhat of a small gas leak, if I fill it up all the way. The frame is in the worst condition I've ever seen on a car. It cant go on a lift at all. I've done some brake work on, wheel cylinders, pads, shoes, and brake lines. Bought new rear speakers spx my a/c don't work at all. There's a short in the circuitry, every time I put a fuse in it, it blows it up.

I really dislike the mazda 626. I have had to replace many parts recently and had to buy a whole new engine even. This car is not for those who intend to go fast. It has no safety features and is very unreliable. Mine breaks down frequently, most of the time for a few minutes. Once it broke down in a fast food resturant drive through.

This car has been great. I have put over 100,000 miles on it in the city, short commute (5-15 miles each way, from different homes), i.e. hard miles. I have never had a major problem with the car, it handles well, but it is showing its age now. I know that for about $1000 I could probably take 5 years off its age.

I've had my 626 for 7 years, including two cross country trips and never had any problems except replacing tires, timing belt - normmal wear things. It's got a lot of pep on the highway and runs better at 80 mph then 40! The paint is starting to fade but other then that I think it's got lots more miles on it.

Expensive to Repair!

I got my Mazda when it had about 77,000 miles on it and it now has over 180,000. The engine is in great condition, but I have had to put quite a lot of money into repair in the suspension system. One of my biggest complaints about Mazdas are the cost of the parts--in my experience they are upwards of three times the cost of your standard domestic car. My 626 has served me well, but when it has needed repair, it cost a lot! My advice to those purchasing a Mazda: Find a good mechanice who knows Mazdas well.

Other than the normal maintenance, I've had some minor problems with this car, but nothing that a mechanic couldn't fix. I drive it about 22000 miles per year back and forth to work, run errands, etc. It's a steal if you can find one with low miles. The only problem I've had with it is the ignitor coil in the distributor. One day, it just wouldn't crank or do anything. Had to have it towed to the shop. Fixed the problem, total outlay: about $320 for parts and labor. All in all, this is my favorite car since I've been driving for about nine years.

My family bought this car when it was new in 1991. I was 7 years old at the time. 12 years and 143,000 miles later the only things wrong with this car are stupid mistakes made by myself and my do-it-yourself dad. This was my first car and I had it for 2 years until I got a 97 Blazer, which my mom totalled. I had more problems in 6 months with the Blazer than 12 years in the Mazda. I'm still driving it back and forth to college (about 300 miles) and it shows no signs of slowing down.

I bought my car used and have owned it for 6 years, now. Other than routine maintenance, the only thing that gives me trouble is the A/C and heating fan, although I have had to have the brakes (rotors, discs and all) completely replaced once and may have to do it again soon. I love driving this car. The 5-speed manual is fun. The car settles in nicely at 120km for highway driving, just under the radar traps.

I have had my Mazda 626 for four years. I've been pretty rough on it, but two growing boys and a husband riding in it almost every day for four years can be hard on any car. The biggest problem I've had with my car was when the water pump went out about 3 years ago when I was driving back and forth to college. The minor problem I'm having right now is that the driver's side door mechanism is broken and I have to open the door from the inside. Other than those things and a slight oil leak, my Mazda has been the best car I've owned.

Bought this car at 105K miles with the thought of trading it in in 10K or so miles. It just kept on running and running and running. Only had to replace a radiator, change brake pads, installed one starting motor. All repairs were relatively easy for someone who does not do a lot of work on cars. While the miles in it may not be glamorous, you always knew that you would get there on time and in relative comfort. Head gasket finally went at 189K, and I'm not up for fixing that, so time to sadly say goodbye.

In Nov. I purchased this car with alot of reservations about it. It turns out to be one of the best cars I have ever owned. I have had to put a little work into it but nothing that major. The worst thing was I had to replace the head gasket because the previous owner neglected to put in a thermostat. So I replaced them both for pretty cheap of course I do all my own work. The only thing my car needs now is a clutch and thats not that bad either. Excellent vehicle and it's alot of fun to drive and also alot of fun to trick out GREAT CAR, GO MAZDA!!!!!!!

I bought this car as a beater that I was planning on having only a year. When I left the country my sister took it because it was a lot better than her Tempo. We haven't had any problems with it that are out of the ordinary (i.e. brakes, shocks, tires.) At 211,000 miles the engine was still running like a top. It didn't show signs of leaking oil. It even made another cross country trip. The only thing that killed it was that my brother hit a deer. Looking at these low ratings for this car, reading the background stories and having a little mechanical ability under my belt, my best advice is to drive it and see if it has been abused or sitting dormant too much. It is a great car.

When I bought it in 2001 from an old couple, there is only 20K miles on it because they said they had been seldom driving it. One cylinder almost didn't work after 2 weeks and I had to keep changing sparkplugs and adding engine oil because the idle cylinder burned a lot of oil. I took it to machanics several times. They changed all the 12 valves and used some chemicals to clean the cylinder, but those didn't work. Finally I sold it after wasting lots of bucks on it and before wasting more. I will never buy a used car anymore.

I purchased this car new in 1991 with 10 miles on it. It now has over 130,000, and I still love it! Very reliable, great gas mileage, looks and runs great still! Only problem is major paint oxidization, but then, it never had a garage to sleep in. Could also use a cup holder. Interior is just as nice as when I purchased it, except for a small crack in the dash vinyl, at the corner of the defroster. :-( Not once have I had any major repairs. I'm a fanatic for clean oil in my car, keeping my plugs clean, and keeping the tires properly inflated. Thanks, Mazda, for building a wonderful, dependable car! I'll drive it until the doors fall off! FYI - I also own a '87 Mazda B2200- love it too!

I hate this car. I have had problems with the brakes off and on. A spark plug flew out of the engine block while I was driving it. Now it doesn't always start in park and often stalls at stops and hesitates when I accelerate from a standstill. I can't wait to get rid of it. I also find that it doesn't have much get up and go on the freeway. Which would be o.k. if the car ran well and was reliable in other aspects
