I had been looking to replace a 2001 Toyota Landcruiser with a new one. The Toyota dealer said he did not have one but if he did, it would have been $75,000. So here I am with a 2011 LR4. 6,000 miles/6 months and I could not be happier. No issues to date. Very fast, comfortable and well designed. 22 mpg on the highway 15 mpg in town. Extremely competent off-road, and I am off road a lot. Also great on road. Smaller than the Landcruiser but every bit as functional.

Solid SUV with No Issues for 7 Years

When Ford bought Land Rover, they drove the brand into the ground. Tata saved Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar from being destroyed by Ford. The second year that Tata took over Land Rover they resurrected the 2012 LR4 and created a solid, well thought-out, well-engineered and PROBLEM-FREE SUV that has served my family well for 75,000+ miles. While many speak about all the problems their LR3 had, they are talking about the pre-Tata buy-out when Ford almost drove 3 brands into the ground. Tata-owned Land Rover has been absolutely solid in our experience.

Still looks and feels almost new

I bought my LR4 in 2018 with approximately 75K on the clock. The prior owner had changed the water pump 3+ times presumably because it was not done correctly. I have changed the oil and filter regularly with my local mechanic, and that is almost all its needed since then. At 120K, a plastic coolant part under under the engine cover was starting to leak, so that was my first large item that was an actual repair ($1,500). The parts are not expensive (aside from the aforementioned coolant part) and as a non-turbo engine it has had no hiccups. I seem to get 23 mpg on the freeway at 75+mph. The V8 is turbine smooth. The interior still looks beautiful. Exterior styling is classic and still looks fresh. It is strong and feels safe traveling with my family. The times we have taken it into the snow it feels rock solid. In my opinion, as long as you stay away from the dealer, maintenance is neither expensive nor repairs frequent. When I read reviews where the cost of maintenance is high or problems are not fixed, it seems to be from owners who are going to the dealer, believing, incorrectly, that the dealer will do a better job because they are paying more. These naturally aspirated V8s are not complicated and most reliable, trustworthy mechanics can handle them. I have found it necessary to have the sunroof drains cleaned.

My favorite SUV ever

I bought my 2012 LR4 HSE used with over 75,000 miles on it, three years ago, and haven't had a single problem with it. Engine? Purrs like a kitten and moves the LR4 like a cheetah. Transmission? Air suspension? No problems. The CarFax showed that the water pump was replaced three times by the dealer, so I assumed the water pump issue was resolved for this car. It was, and I have not had a problem with anything else on this vehicle. I chose the 2012 model because it was among the last to have a V8, before Land Rover switched to smaller, more complex (and likely to fail) engines. I'm glad I did. The V8 is turbine-smooth, and it moves this heavy, sturdy vehicle like it weighs virtually nothing. The cockpit is beautiful and elegant to look at, instruments and controls are trouble-free, and the seating position is unbeatable. The outer design is timeless and it still looks new. We go to the snow occasionally and it is in its element. My suggestion for long and happy ownership is to find a non-dealer competent mechanic. These are not complex cars and the parts are inexpensive and easy to find. A dealer will take you to the cleaners every time with these older cars. I like the looks of the new Defender but given the reliability of the LR4, its comfort and solid build quality, I'll probably keep it forever.

Been driving my LR4 Lux for 2 weeks, nothing but good things to say, powerful, luxurious interior, easy hands free. Lowering of vehicle 2" is great for my 2 young kids to get in and out, they love the ambient lights in the doors! Drove a 06 RR sport, this vehicle is better appointed more powerful and cost $15k less! I use this vehicle for work. hauling virtually everything and anything, slick back seats. iPod cord transfers everything to the display easy to use. Cameras are a little over kill but have come in handy parking tight to curbs!
