The 2021 Kia Seltos is stylish, roomy and available with plenty of the latest technology and safety features. It's rather quick, too, as long as you get the optional turbocharged engine. Comfort is lacking, however, and it's not a particularly fun SUV to drive. But overall the Seltos is worth a look along with other popular models such as the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30.
The 2021 Seltos is an all-new extra-small crossover SUV
Slots between the Soul and the Sportage in Kia's lineup
Kicks off the first Seltos generation
What is it?
The 2021 Kia Seltos is the newest addition to Kia's rapidly growing small crossover lineup. "But wait," you might be thinking, "doesn't Kia already make the Soul, Niro and Sportage?" Well, yes. But given high customer demand, automakers' current thinking is that you can never have too many small crossovers. So, by extension, Kia believes there's room for the Seltos.
The Seltos combines the maneuverable size of the subcompact Soul with a slightly longer body to add more practicality. We especially like its expressive styling, upscale interior and available turbocharged engine.
Why does it matter?
Though the Soul is less expensive than the Seltos, its funky design and smallish cargo area aren't for everyone. The Seltos takes a more traditional approach, with greater storage room and more conventional styling. Plus it has optional all-wheel drive, which is something you can't get on the Soul. While you might not be able to do any serious off-roading with the Seltos, it does have hill descent control and a locking center differential that make it relatively capable when the pavement ends (or when the weather gets rough).
What does it compete with?
The Seltos faces a wide range of competitors in the subcompact crossover class. You could start by checking out the Hyundai Kona. These two models have some mechanical similarities. The choice between the two largely comes down to deciding which car's styling and design you like better.
Other top models in the extra-small crossover SUV class include the Honda HR-V, which has one of the most cargo-friendly cabins in the segment, and the fun-to-drive Mazda CX-3. Another option is Subaru Crosstrek. Its high ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive bolster its ability to take on adverse weather and road conditions.
What kind of features does it have?
The Seltos continues Kia's long tradition of exceptional bang for the buck. Two engines are available: a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 146 horsepower and a sportier turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder making 175 hp. The 2.0-liter is matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission, while the turbo engine pairs with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The base Seltos offers front-wheel drive, while all other models come standard with all-wheel drive.
The Seltos will offer a generous array of tech features, ranging from an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display (or an optional 10.25-inch screen with navigation on the SX Turbo trim), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and an eight-speaker Bose sound system. Several driver assist features — such as blind-spot warning, lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control — are also available as standard or optional features.
Rear passengers are also treated right, with reclining seatbacks and, in EX and SX Turbo trims, rear climate vents and a USB charge port.
What else should I know?
The 2021 Seltos is the more practical of Kia's subcompacts, and it brims with personality. The interior is surprisingly upscale, and the simulated leather upholstery feels like the real thing. And as in the Soul, the Seltos has optional ambient light strips around the cabin that pulsate with your music.
The Seltos is spacious enough for at least four adults and all their luggage. Behind the rear seat, it has 26.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which is above average for this type of SUV. And when you fold the rear seats flat, the Seltos has a whopping 62.8 cubic feet of cargo space. Rivals have to make do with much less space. For instance, the Jeep Renegade has 50.8 cubes and the Hyundai Kona only has 45.8 cubes.
Like most Kias, the Seltos goes all in on the tech front. Most of today's advanced driving systems, from forward collision warning to blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, are available. It also borrows the three-row Kia Telluride's Lane Following Assist feature, which helps keep the Seltos in the center of its lane. Overall, these systems work pretty well, and Kia has also made it easy to disable the systems one by one or all together if you don't like them.
How does it drive?
Our drive was limited to the top trim SX with the optional turbocharged engine. The engine provides plenty of smooth acceleration for this small crossover. Kia says it put extensive work into softening the shift shock from the dual-clutch transmission; slow and jerky shifting is something we've noticed in the related Hyundai Kona.
The ride is another story. While the body felt perfectly fine on the glassy highways, impacts from bumps at lower speeds were more pronounced than we anticipated and sent a shimmy through the cabin. There's also quite a bit of tire noise over rough surfaces.
Steering and handling in the Seltos are also mildly disappointing. While rivals such as the Crosstrek and CX-3 are entertaining to drive around corners, the Seltos feels numb and disconnected. The steering wheel is poorly weighted, and there isn't any real feedback for the driver. What's more, body lean as you go around a turn is more pronounced in the Seltos than it is in the Soul. The Seltos' indifferent handling won't likely be a deal-breaker for most shoppers, but it's worth paying attention to if you take one out for a test drive.
What's the interior like?
In the top trim levels, the Seltos comes across as rather luxurious compared to others in the class. Simulated leather upholstery, soft-touch plastics and piano black trim are abundant in the front of the cabin.
An available power-adjustable front seat with height and seat-bottom angle adjustment, plus a sliding center armrest, helps ensure that drivers of all sizes find a comfortable position. Though the touchscreen is set high on top of the dash, it's within easy reach of the driver. A few conveniently placed physical buttons also help you navigate through the interface.
How practical is it?
The Seltos might be a subcompact crossover, but its passenger and cargo areas are both quite spacious. There's enough room for tall occupants in both front seats, and the rear is similarly accommodating. The rear seatbacks have two reclining positions, and even in the more upright angle, passengers more than 6 feet tall should have plenty of headroom.
Buyers who worry that a subcompact won't offer enough cargo room have not met the Seltos. The load area is square and starts below the rear seatbacks, so even carry-on luggage standing upright likely won't impede rear visibility. A false cargo floor can be repositioned to allow for a nearly flat load surface with the rear seats folded.
Edmunds says
A tougher look and all-wheel drive make the 2021 Kia Seltos a welcome companion to the funky, street-oriented Soul in Kia's lineup. Along with top models such as the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-3, the new Seltos should be a great pick for an extra-small crossover SUV.

2021 Kia Seltos SX 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
I have always been a Jeep owner and will miss the Jeep family.
I started out to get a Jeep Compass Limited for my retirement vehicle (since I don't go off-roading anymore).
For what I payed for my new 2021 Kia sx turbo I got so much more than expected in value for the cost, like when sitting in the the roomy interior of the kia (I am 6 foot tall, 240 lb ), the styling their with the … 10.3-inch navigation screen, all the driver-assistance tech, the Bose premium 8 speaker sound system looks and sounds very nice. Even the speaker grills are shaped like mountains when sitting in there, those comfortable seats for my long legs. Kias warranty.
Looking at the exterior I noticed the wheels, the attention to detail in the front and the rear styling, fit and finish of the exterior, the 28% approach and departure angles (OK) not so much for the plastic skid plates front and rear. But it dose make it look a little rugged-looking though.
The power from 0 to 60, and that (center differential lock) and torque vectoring for this price point.
I wanted to mention the best in class braking 60 to 0, this is just my opinion only.
(The 235 tires might have something to do with that.)
I am impressed with the ride and how it handles on the rough back roads, there are some pavements that are louder than others but 95% of the time it is very good for its class, it has 235 tires with 18 inch rims and is not as quiet as my 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland (Hemi) ha ha but is almost half the price and I am retired now. It dose get twice the millage though...
Remember the tires have a lot to do with road noise, stopping distance, handling and ride, (the width of the tire, its sidewall height and tread compound).
UPDATE 10/20/2021
SX AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo )
I now have 13,000 miles on the Seltos.
We have went to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park twice now myself and two grandkids and we had room for all of are stuff and no comfort complaints, It is about 7 hour trip from are home in Ohio and my back side never never had any complaints either ha ha.
The 1.6 Turbo had no problem going up Jellico Mountain on I-75, and in the Smoky Mountains it handled the US-441 Newfound Gap Road with curvy roads and steep winding curves like a champ and a 11-mile section of U.S. Route 129 there has become a hugely popular destination for motorcyclists and sports car drivers and had no problems their.
On Christmas Eve 2020 11PM it was 17 degrees and we had 6 inches of snow and I tested it out on are hilly back roads stopping half way up a hill and starting up again and it handled that with no problems. I run Firestone weathergrip touring tires.
At 9,000 miles I had it serviced and oil changed for the second time and they recalibrated the DCT transmission threw a technical service bulletin. It did shift better and I would advise asking about it, my dealer let me know with out asking...
It is not a sports car but the AWD and the1.6 turbo is very energetic while returning better then estimated fuel millage. We have got 31,32 on are road trips and 27,28 all around gas millage on regular gas.
I have tried here to give you some honest real on road driving impressions that I have had driving the Setos sense 4/2/2020. I am just really enjoying driving the Seltos SX.

2021 Kia Seltos SX 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
I traded in my Mazda CX5 for the new KIA Seltos. I have to say I'm really loving it! Compared to my Touring model Mazda, the Seltos really delivers on quality, features and comfort for about the same price. Smooth ride! The turbo sx model I highly recommend so you're not hesitant when pulling out or merging. Plenty of cargo space in the trunk area with a nice cargo cover for security or … keeping the sun off groceries. Ample leg room in front and rear seating. The seats are surprisingly comfortable for being new and leather. The Bose speakers are my favorite as they light up and pulse to the music in a non distract blue. I had hoped for the fun yellow color, but it looked more like a banana and lime had a baby...but totally loving the steel grey exterior and black leather trim inside. Very happy overall.
Never thought I would say I LOVE my Kia!

2021 Kia Seltos EX 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
I have been a VW girl for a long time but, this Kia Seltos is great! I love the amount of quality you get for the price. It's comfortable, economical and very affordable. I do really like the large console screen. I have only 1 complaint and that is that the time changes back 1 hour every few days. I have to take it back to the dealer to see what the problem is. Otherwise it's so far my … favorite vehicle!
Great CUV For The Price

2021 Kia Seltos S 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
I have owned my Seltos for six months and have only put 2,200 miles on it. It’s a great CUV for the price. I opted for the FWD S as I live in sunny Arizona and rarely drive on non-paved roads or in snow. The Seltos drives great and offers a number of advanced safety features. I do wish it offered LED headlights and blind-spot monitoring on all trims. I turned off lane keep assist as it … was annoying, and disengage the auto start/stop every time I start the vehicle for the same reason. While I’m happy to have the option to turn off auto start/stop, I wish I didn’t have to do this every time I start the vehicle. Similarly, the Seltos defaults back to Normal driving mode with each restart which is also annoying if you want to drive and stay in Smart or Sport mode. I do love the Apple CarPlay integration and find it intuitively easy to navigate the entire infotainment system. The Seltos drives smooth and I think it’s very quiet on the highway. Acceleration is more than adequate in my opinion, too, as the S is non-turbo. While I wish there was an option to add a cover to the hatch area, I have found the interior cabin to be very spacious and I like the utility of the adjustable cargo floor. I especially love the overall look of the Seltos, especially in Neptune Blue (the color of mine), Starbright Yellow, or Mars Orange. Despite the number of things I wish the Seltos had, I love it and would buy it again today. Definitely worth checking out and cross shopping if considering a CUV.
