Great car that lives up to the hype. So far..

I've had my red SEL Premium for over a month now and overall, I absolutely love it. Outside of its distinctive good looks (IMO), the Tucson is really a giant leap forward from the last generation in terms of features, ride quality, and space utility. The new Tucson comes in so many trims, options and drivetrains there's really something for everybody. It really comes down to what you really want and can live with. I couldn't afford the Limited trim so I went to the highest SEL trim available with the Convenience and Premium package. I've sat in the SE and to be blunt, there's a world of difference in terms of what it offers (er, lacks) vs. the SEL-Convenience so if you can afford the latter, go for it. I wasn't too fond of the "cloth" seats of the SEL-Convenience trim, it just felt somewhat abrasive with a kind of cheap, nylon-y fabric feel that just lacked quality. The base sound system is just lousy, so if you are an audiophile like me, step up to Premium to get the upgraded Bose and leather seats. Trust me, it's well worth the additional investment. A lot's been said about the touch screen buttons in the center stack. I agree they are highly sensitive so it's easy to accidentally turn on/turn off something you don't mean to when you're cleaning it. There's a lot of glossy black plastic in the car. On the shifter area, door panels which make it a pain to clean as they are dust magnets so be prepared to wipe that stuff down with a soft cloth a lot. Probably the only glitchy annoyance I've seen so far is with the wireless apple car play. It's weird that the SE/SEL trims get wireless, but the Limited does not. So although convenient to have it, I sometimes see the car play freeze or it just randomly disconnects. Not sure if that is an Apple issue or Bluetooth issue, but it can be annoying after awhile. Overall however, the car drives great. It handles reasonably well, not as good as the Mazda CX-5, but the ride is smooth and interior noise is very quiet. The acceleration is pretty weak with the gas engine, but it's no different than the base engines of the latest RAV-4, CX-5, and Tiguans. So if you've got a heavy foot and need more horses in your life, then step up to the Hybrid. Interior space is really a high point in this car. I'm just a single guy so I have more space than I'd ever need to shuttle friends around town or drop stuff off in the trunk. I can easily fit my golf clubs and 3-4 large suitcases back there without folding down the rear seats. Another high point of the Tucson are all of the high tech safety features on the car. Sure it offers your typical stuff like adaptive cruise and rear cross traffic alerts, but more unexpected stuff like oncoming traffic warnings and rear occupancy alerts are nice touches. It's all great stuff, but I wonder long term about needing to fix that stuff some years down the road as if it breaks, it'll likely cost a ton to fix it. I spent the past year during the pandemic searching for my compact crossover. For the longest time it was always the CX-5. But then the Hyundai reveal video of this car last Fall really blew me away and I had to wait for it - to see if it would live up to its hype in person. There's a lot of style and substance with this car - it's living proof that the compact crossover segment doesn't have to be "boring". Kudos Hyundai! One final note is that Hyundai charges extra for white and red paint colors ($350). Fortunately I got my red one early on when they weren't charging extra for it, but I'll tell you, the Calypso Red really "pops". I get a lot of compliments on it - Hyundai finally moved away from that disgusting Heinz-ketchupy red they used to splatter on the earlier years of the last gen Tucson.

Worst purchase ever. Transmission has slipped twice, engine light came on, several issues with head unit "replaced twice" still issues with head unit, emergency lights come on randomly several times and wont go off until I restart car, I have been in park and the crash indicators come on until I restart the car, my hazards stopped working, and my sun roof leaks which they said is normal!!!

New engine at 3600 miles

Purchased brand new in January 2022. With about 3600 miles on it, I was driving home in April 2022 from Montana to Idaho. Started to lose power, check engine came on. I pulled off the road, it would restart but only bucked forward slightly then died. I waited 2.5 hours for a tow. Initial diagnosis was leaky fuel injector. Just got word the engine is bad, needs new engine. I paid $32K, and told the dealer I wanted to trade it in because I was not comfortable with the car. He offered me $27K on a trade. Are you serious, spend $5K to drive a car for 3 months/3600 miles. Hyundai never again.

Where the Tucson missed the mark

Yes, it has a new radical look and you may love it or hate it. The vehicle is over-engineered with features that sometimes either don't work or make no sense. The proximately door locks make no sense. Try drying the car after a car wash and find the door locking and unlocking. Or go out to the car to grab something and find that somehow the doors locked themselves and you do not have your key fob. Speaking of which, if the key fob is near the iPhone it disables. Don't dare put the fob on the same side of your body as your phone, and don't put the key fob in your purse with your phone. Touch-sensitive door locks sometimes just don't work forcing you to dig the key fob out of your pocket or purse to lock the door. Try doing this holding a baby or with an armful of groceries The odometer will reset each time car is turned off. If you are getting reimbursed for mileage this can be costly. The rear directional signal is in the rear bumper. I did not even realize this until I was behind a similar Tucson. Most people will pull up behind your car at a red light and not see the directional signal. Tailgaters also do not see it. This is a ridiculous design flaw. There is no sunglasses holder in the ceiling. ?? Are you kidding me. I have had a sunglass holder in every car since the late 1980s. The infotainment system usually required 2-3 tries to activate, such as changing the radio station, which by the way cause you to take your eyes off the road multiple times. Apple car play works intermittently. The power is lacking and there needs to be an option for a turbo or bigger engine. Especially noticeable starting on a hill from a dead stop. These "quirks" are deal breakers for my next vehicle when the lease runs out. The door locks are infuriating to say the least. UPDATE: I think that the newly designed Hyundai TUSCON is similar to getting married to a beauty queen for looks only to find out later she/he is bat guano crazy. Example: Why does she lock me out of my car. But not always. I park in the garage and forget something in the car. The keys are in the house and I find the car has locked itself. WHAT??? And then sometimes when I get out of the car and the setting is to unlock doors when put it park, but sometimes the back doors remained locked. No mention of this in the owners manual- but doing research has revealed some software genius thought that was a good idea if no one else was in the car. WHAT? I have to open and close another door to prevent this from happening. Rear directional lights placed in the bumper! Therefore if you are in bumper to bumper traffic and wish to change lanes the car behind you cannot see the directional signal. With all the gimmicky light in the front grill and they decide to hide the rear directional. Another dangerous feature. The touch screen is always dirty and usually requires 2-3 tries to execute. This is dangerous and distracts from driving. Why no sunglass holder in the ceiling. I thought all cars had these. But just like marrying that super good looking model you find out strange things. Lane control resets itself even when turned off. To me this feels like someone is pulling the steering wheel. I like to drive in the outer 2/3 of the lane on a undivided road to avoid the someone in a TUSCON drifting unto my lane while playing with touch control buttons that don’t always respond. Each time I turn it off on the highway it mysteriously turns back on.?? The acceleration in poor and unresponsive. When I first saw her I thought WOW that must be something to take for a ride. But it turns out it like log rolling. Dangerous pulling out into traffic. Some hard dials should not be a luxury, like a volume dial and not hold a soft touch key that can’t find the right volume without multiple tries. Outside door lock/unlock is absurd in that you cannot have a cell phone near the key fob for the touch control to work. Like if the phone and fob are in the same pocket or in a purse. Another genius software designed to drive me crazy. And forget about it if is is raining, snowing or you are wearing glove. Better do digging for that fob. Hyundai is like a D3 college team that wants to compete in D1 but the coach hasn’t had the experience of playing with the grown ups. In summary it is a wannabe that just compete with Toyota, Mazda, or Nissan. But for the first time ever, I traded in after 30 months and the trade in was worth more than the payoff. I submit this is due to supply issues.

Stylish looking and comfort

👍🏼 - quiet ride, wireless CarPlay, comfortable ride quality, luxury interior look, stylish exterior. 2022 redesign. 3 year free maintenance. With convenience package added gets a bigger dash screen which is easy to understand, not clumsy like other rivals. Liked the entire touch screen infotainment, fast responsive than rivals. Good lane tracing ride than my old 2019 rav4. - resale value is less than the rivals but value for money features. Transmission is not ctv so may feel a jerk if not correctly accelerated. But it feels better after putting more miles and engine tunes well then and by putting premium gets more mileage per gallon.
