Sorry Hyundai This is the last one!!

This is my 3rd Hyundai. XG300 - Loved it - 2004 Santa Fe - Loved it - 2017 Tucson - Hate it!! There are many things that I don't like but the main one is the DCT transmission (Dual Clutch Transmission). It jerks every time you accelerate. I have talked to service reps about this and they just say that's the way they are making them now. It holds back on acceleration at higher speeds. If I go from braking to accelerating the car hesitates before accelerating. I was told this is the computer "it gets confused" when you brake and accelerate to quickly. It nearly go me broadsided due to the fact I had to stop short from getting hit in a circle and it would not move right away after that. I floored it and it still didn't move. I not only could have gotten broadsided but I could have been rear-ended or worse. I guess the computer was confused!! I don't want a computer having control of driving my car. The wheels lock up every time I hit the brake on a wet road - not snowy or icy - wet. I have skidded through stop signs on occasion because the wheels lock up. The headlights aren't bright enough. There are no fog lights. The inside of the windshield fogs up all the time, also the side windows fog up. The outside mirrors never clear. The air flow inside the car changes all by itself. I put it on inside air and it changes back to outside air. Any questions??

worse crossover I have ever owned! I traded it in within the same year I purchased it 2017. I literally had to wait to make sure both lanes were clear before entering traffic my gas peddle hit the floor with no acceleration what so ever! I owned a Tuscan plus AWD 2017 the engine is a 2.0L and a 7 speed transmission which is terrible!

My Tuscon has been nothing short of a nightmare. From day one it has shifted very very rough, almost stalls out in traffic, and fails to accelerate from a stop. I have almost been hit 3 times due to these malfunctions. All of these are due to a design flaw in the dual clutch system. Hyundai even has a recall TSB (technical service bulletin) out to all of it's dealers regarding these safety issues, yet they deny it. But their service managers freely acknowledge all of these problems the 4 times I have taken it in for them. They say they hear these same complaints over and over again about the Tuscon. If you Google search Hyundai Tuscon dual clutch problems, you will find thousands of the same complaints. This is obviously a dangerous vehicle according to their own tsb.

This car is beautiful. There is plenty of room for 5 adults and plenty of leg room. The console is beautiful and easy to set up. The only drawback would be that there is not much room in the very back trunk area. Other than that I highly recommend this car.

Tucson 1.6 liter turbo - AVOID

Greg N, 07/12/2023
2017 Hyundai Tucson Value 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
2 of 2 people found this review helpful

I bought my 2017 Tucson 1.6 turbo new. It has 96,000 kilometers now. The engine began using oil at 80,000 km and Hyundai won't fix or replace it until it uses 1.5 liters every 1,000 kilometers. Mine uses 1.25 liters and the 5 year 100,000 km warranty has expired 8 months ago. When bringing it in to verify the oil it burns I spoke to DOZENS of other Tucson owners who had the same problem - none of them qualified for warranty. Now at 96,000 km (and 8 months past its warranty) mine has also developed a serious transmission seal leak which affects the CV transmission - $3,000 repair not covered by warranty now. Together I need a new engine, new CVT clutch at a total cost of $11,000 none of which is covered by warranty. I have owned 8 new vehicles over the years and I have never had one of them that required either a new engine or new transmission despite driving each of them over 150,000 km (one of them I drove for 350,000 km) before trading them in on a new vehicle . Avoid any Hyundai Tucson but especially the 2017 1.6 turbo.

Engine died at 94K. Because we were the second owner, warranty did not cover. Car started burning through oil about 8 months ago and then one day driving through town, the engine started shaking. The car was only 7 years old, well maintained, and the engine failed. It is shameful that Hyundai is getting away with this. No engine in a modern car should completely fail at less than 100K miles. Edmunds needs to review their 4/5 reliability rating as thousands of these engines are dying, leaving owners in a horrible position.

Tucson: Intro to SUV

AnnieC623, 10/01/2018

My true love is for a sports car... age and arthritis sent me to a sedan... retiring and moving to a rural area with more severe winters prompted me to an SUV with all wheel drive. The Tucson is the third Hyundai I've owned, but my first SUV, so I opted to lease for two years to test the SUV waters. I was not disappointed. (And as I write this, my lease has ended, and I am trading the 2017 Tucson for a 2019 Santa Fe, as I am looking for more cargo space, and a heftier SUV-"trucky" feel.) There is nothing negative I have to comment about the Tucson. It is a well built, generously appointed (Ultimate package) small SUV, and has served well for the driving I now do. Occasionally, when visiting my kids/grandkids, I would have appreciated a bit more cargo capacity, but for my usual local driving, it was a comfortable and more than adequate vehicle. The all wheel drive feature was absolutely necessary for winter driving, and I had no issues in navigating our local roads or, most important, getting up the incline to leave my driveway! The features on the 2017 Tucson Ultimate package far exceed those found on comparable vehicles of other makes in the same price range. I opted to lease this vehicle as I was unsure if I liked having an SUV. As it turned out, it was more than all right, and I am going for my second SUV lease, as previously noted. I have been a Hyundai owner since 2003, and am satisfied with the vehicle quality vs price, and note that Hyundai overall quality standards have appreciably risen since 2003 (first Hyundai was a 2004 XG350, traded for a 2007 Azera Ltd, needed All/4 wheel drive, but loved that car!) Overall, the Tucson is a terrific small SUV - dependable, comfortable, and reasonably priced.

Disappointed. Going to do my research next time looking into cars, as this was my first time car buying experience. I will not recommend a Hyundai to anyone. 6 year mark on the vehicle, 105k miles and the engine completely blew. I noticed in the last 2 years or so it was burning oil quickly and I was having to do frequent oil changes. If you look up other articles on this vehicle you will see multiple reports of the same issues. Clearly it was an issue as the whole engine got destroyed. Also want to note that there was absolutely no warning lights on the vehicle when the engine started to make knocking noises. Went through the dealership and through corporate Hyundai only to get a discount on a new engine. The day after I picked up the car after putting in the new engine at the dealership, the A/C started only blowing hot air. I reported the issue the next day and was denied coverage on the A/C both by the corporate and the dealer. Total for engine and A/C was over $4,000. Also, I was only contacted by one representative through corporate Hyundai after submitting my concerns over 2 months ago and of course they can’t do anything because it’s out of warranty. Just read the reviews yourself and do your research. Hopefully I can trade the car in elsewhere and I am definitely not going to buy another Hyundai.

Be aware the car looks very nice! but looks are deceiving. i got mine on the beautiful Caribbean blue with the upgraded wheels, cars is spacious and it serves its purpose as a small SUV. Panoramic sunroof is beautiful. Radio works fine as well as the Bluetooth. I has blind spot detector, cross traffic warning, rear view camera, heated front seats, plenty of good pointers to the car. Now onto the thing i HATE about this car, the transmission, its shifts like garbage on low gears it jerks really badly and in occasions after a short stop car wont accelerate right away, it lacks power at is has a small engine for the size of the car. Unfortunately, Hyundai's do NOT hold they resale value so if you really want to trade out of the car early you will be deep on upside down $$$$$. In general its a great looking car with a very ugly power-train.

Death trap

Purchased the 2017 Tucson Value new. First few thousand miles car seemed fine then started having issues with the DCT. Get on the gas to pull out in traffic the car gives a quick jump allowing you into traffic then RPMs shoot up and you lose all acceleration. This car almost got me hit many times in the 2 years I owned due to this issue. I have a large hill that I must use going home from work with this car nope had to literally change my normal path home to avoid the hill as if I had to stop on the hill it would take 1 to 3 changes of the light before I could fully make it up as it would just ramp RPM’s and not move for several seconds when I got on gas. As anyone who buys one of these they also lose value extremely fast so on top of the issues I had I took a major hit when I traded it in after 2 years note only reason I got rid of it was because I truly felt this car was going to hurt or kill me or one of my kids at some point. I have purchased many Hyundai’s over the years with minimal issues however this turd of an SUV was so bad and Hyundai’s total lack of care on my legit issue has turned me away from ever buying Hyundai again. BTW Hyundai I love my new Tacoma!

Good vehicle for the price and 0.00% interest. I should have purchased the 1.6 for better start off the mark. My vehicle has a soft 0 to 60 but the reviews started that issue. Vehicle is good but service at Delray Hyundai is poor 10 phone calls before receiving a call back to schedule an appointment, otherwise I would give the vehicle a 5. Service is a large part of vehicle performance. The service has improved but still could be better. The vehicle is a great touring car. Does 10 to 14 hour drives smoothly. This vehicle overall has been a good purchase for me.

I purchased the 2017 Tucson and realized I had made a big mistake. I almost got killed by pulling out on to traffic the acceleration wasn't there my gas pedal went to the floor and it lagged so bad I traded it in with 10.000 miles on it who ever invented the dual clutch should be fired immediately its not a safe car. buyers beware!!

In stop and go traffic the transmission will not respond properly. Changing lanes when you accelerate the transmission will delay about 2or 3 seconds before responding. Dealer is aware of problem but they cannot fix. It's the dual clutch transmission and that's the way it is.

Great Value but...What's with the Entertainment?

After having this car for almost 2 years, I really like it. It looks great, drives well, but the dual clutch transmission takes some getting used to. The one thing that really bothers me though is the entertainment system. A couple times a month, for no reason, I always have to reset the Entertainment system because there will be no audio coming from speakers. This can take 1 minute or 10 minutes and turning the car on and off to do it is annoying because it it time consuming. Took it to dealer when it first happened and he said it is basically a computer and like any computer, sometimes you just have to reboot it / refresh it. I've never had a car that did that before until now. Other than that, I can't complain. It's been a good car. I got 375k miles outta of my 2008 Honda CRV before I bought the Tucson and I am hoping I can get even more out this baby.

I was in a multi-impact head on collision in this car and I walked away without a scratch. This car’s safety features and design literally saved my life. I am having a very difficult time replacing the car, as I can’t seem to find anything comparable to the SE Plus. The car is sometimes slow to shift/accelerate but I owned a turbo charged genesis prior to this purchase so my thoughts may solely be based on comparison. I relocated from Florida to Colorado. The car handles the road trip with ease and comfort and got me everywhere I’ve ever wanted to go.

Great looking SUV with some serious issues

Mr602, 10/19/2019

1 of 1 people found this review helpful

I purchased my 2017 Value Edition in Nov 2017 new. Overall I love this car, and I only have a couple of complaints..However they are serious complaints that can not be ignored. My Tucson is FWD. I live in Chicago and I have never had a issue with any FWD car driving in snow...except for the Tucson. Simply put, this SUV can not handle snow over 3” deep !! The vehicle constantly got stuck in snow, when I turn the wheel so I can get into my garage, it got stuck ! One time I could not get it into the garage at all. A neighbor came out and helped me. The duel clutch is out and out dangerous..period. I am amazed no one has been killed yet ! Countless times while at a intersection, waiting to make a left turn, nothing happens when you pit your foot on the gas pedal. It is as if the transmission is in neutral. It is VERY slow to respond. At least 2 seconds. When you have cars coming at you at 50 mph... its a very long 2 seconds. It pains me to write such a negative review.. I owned a 2008 Sonata V6..I loved that car and never had any issues. Due to these issues with the Tucson, I made the decision to get rid of it. I purchased a Kia Sportage AWD instead. Bottom line. If you drive in snow. Do not get the FWD Tucson. Be mindful of the duel clutch also.

The dual clutch system is not as bad as people make it seems. It acts as a clutch system and has a kick to it when it launches out of the first second gear. It does have a slight lag sometimes but it’s nothing too serious if you’re driving responsibly. The numerous amount of features on the car really puts it above others in the class for the value. I really enjoy having the car. I can’t wait to take it on a road trip!

Hyundai Tucson 2017 Limited AWD Turbo

I previously owned a Hyundai sedan and decided to go back to an SUV. I test drove a Mazda CX-5 and a Jeep Compass. Was not impressed with the overall ride and quality of either. Test drove the Tucson and it was a quieter more comfortable overall driving experience. I bought the Limited model with AWD and turbo. This model is well equipped with Navigation System, auto tailgate and lane warning signals. It’s a comfortable and quiet ride. The 19” tires hug the road well. My biggest concern with this vehicle is that it does not respond well from a standing position at a light. There is hesitation when first accelerating and it feels as if the electronic ignition is not designed for maximum performance. I have read other info about this Tucson issue and some describe it as a shifting problem as it goes through the first couple of gears. Whateve and r is causing this hesitation it is frustrating for everyday driving experience. The 4 cylinder turbo just seems a bit under whelming when you need to accelerate from a light or need to pass. If you are more concerned about performance than bells and whistles you will be disappointed with this acceleration issue. This is a problem in the 2017 that I bought but may not be in later models. Overall I like the design Of both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. The acceleration issue is a major concerned. 3.75 stars out of 5

The car functions are pretty reliable, but recently the paint has started to peel off leaving silver spots all over my car. I don't know if this is from thin crappy paint or not, but it isn't even a year old yet and has worse paint than my 2008 Saturn Vue. Getting the car looked at tomorrow by the dealer.

Turbo engine won't let you down. I have a santa fe v6 engine and bought 2017 tucson sport 1.6 turbo. regular v6 engine seamlessly shift gears from low to high rpm. Turbo 1.6 kicks in at 1500 rpm which I love it. Don't expect power or torque yet from 700 to 1499 REV. this where the disappointment starts. You need to manage the engine power and torque . My wife loves it ...i love it.

Have been to the dealer within the first two week to complain about shifting. Go to the national safety review saction and do a little reading. Do not buy this car. Electrical cut out on us at night on major highway. Almost got killed.

A Drag and Engine Light Issues

I purchased the car from a Honda dealership first of all because I felt like it had a better deal. I drove off the lot happy the next day as I was going to work the check engine light came on and it continues to come on after I purchased another gas cap new from Hyundai. It lacks acceleration has no get up a 1999 Accord has more speed than that. I really wish that I would of gotten something different the fuel economy is horrible I filled up on Saturday and by Monday I was wondering where all my gas had went to when I had only being to a few places. JD Power is giving them all these good ratings but if performance is one that is always lacking then they are overrating it by far too much. It would be nice to have them do something for the interest of the consumers and owners of this vehicle

Do not buy a 2017 hyundai or a hyundai in general. On my 2nd one. Both have died before the payments were even done on it. Both with problems known by everyone who has owned one and the dealerships. And both times hyundai canada hasnt stood behind their products. Waste of time unless you want to be stranded.

Tucson AWD Limited Ultimate

I just picked up a CPO Limited model with the Ultimate package and have had it about a week. The more I drive it the more I like it. Yes, at first I noticed slight shuttering, a very slight lag when accelerating from a stop (never anything that made me feel unsafe or nervous), and some "confused" gear shifting at lower speeds, but as I've driven it more, I've 1) grown accustomed to it, and 2) learned how much gas to give it to minimize it. Otherwise, I actually love the DCT combined with the 1.6 turbo. The engine has pretty good pickup once you get moving. My previous car was a manual which I loved driving, so for me, the DCT is a great compromise to move to an automatic, as it's an automatic, but feels more like a manual. Handling is great, easy to move in and out of parking spots, which was a concern for me living in Boston and coming from a smaller sedan. Very comfortable on the highway, quiet cabin, the Infinity sound system on this model sounds fantastic. MPG seems on par with the estimates - although 24mpg city might be a little optimistic. Apple Carplay is awesome. Can't wait for the summer to try out the panoramic sunroof and cooled seats.

Bought the left over Night edition, Love most everything about the car except the dual clutch transmission and road noise. Made a left turn across on coming traffic normal would have had plenty of time but engine roared between gears before shifting causing a big delay. Later found that in heavy traffic best to use sport mode.. Hate the dual clutch transmission. and now with 15K miles am hearing more road noise. But handles great and highway driving is a pleasure. Update , After another 8K miles, Find the dual clutch transmission more often is screwing up. Will be making an appointment to have checked out.. After using for a few months I find that on long trips not as comfortable in steering as the KIA Soul

Have had this car since new with outstanding overall service. The only poor things are the seats lack comfort and road noise at highway speeds. If you get one change the tires to a good brand and the handling will show dramatic improvement.

This is an amazing vehicle. It drives so well, handles so well and hugs the road. I love the car for so many reasons and the only "fault" is gas mileage. It averages around 20-21 (tops) in the city. I had hoped for closer to 25-26 as indicated on Manufacturer's label.

If you want to have a big headake, buy a Hyundai Tucson 2017. I don't know what is wrong with the car, the thruth is, every 1000 km I have to add 2 litres of motor oil. I took the car back to the dealler (Thornhill Hyundai) in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada where they changed the oil, cheged the spak plugs and told me that the car was good. I keep buying oil and adding to the motor at every 1000km. I was talking to a friend of my who bought a brand new Hyundai Elentra and had the same problem. I wouldnt recomend anyone to buy a Hyundai vehicle.

Auto Door Lock-Parking Brake Warning Light

P Scott, 11/07/2023

A couple things on my 2017 Tuscon I can't seemed to get resolved. 1) The driver's side door will not open automatically. It stopped working about 6 months ago and I've gotten so many different solutions: wire disconnected in door, wiring in handle needs to be replaced, total door handle needs to be replaced. 2) The Parking Brake warning light will not go off!! I have paid for 3 diagnostics test (one at a Hyundai dealership) and nothing comes up so, of course, no one can figure how to get the light to go off and stay off! I've had another mechanic check it and he was so sure he had it fixed that when I brought the car back, he disconnected the brake fluid reservoir sensor thinking that was it and I didn't need it anyway. Can some PLEASE help! Brake sensor pads have been checked - go figure there aren't any. I really want to trash the car!

I spent way too much time researching vehicles and I finally ended up on the Hyundai Tuscon based on the spirited test drive. In the end the sporty turbo engine and the 19" wheels won me over the Rav4 and the Forester but it's the cargo space and the panoramic roof that I ended up liking the most.
