2011 Sonata Hybrid after 7 months

We've owned this car for seven months now. I'm surprised at some of the negative reviews. My wife and I love this vehicle. We have been been stopped and questioned about the car. Everyone thinks it looks really cool. But that is not all. We have maintained 33-35mpg in local driving...and 35-42mpg on the highway. If you are going up hills, the gas mileage is less. If you have a heavy foot it will be less. However, it is not hard to increase the mileage with some smart driving. I have had the car go into the electric mode for several minutes at 70mph.

Still a very substantial sedan for the money

I was shopping for used, large, easy on the gas, vehicle, that didn't break the bank. What I got was 2011 Sonata Hybrid base. Paid $7990, mileage at 68k. The Sonata had only one owner. Interior/exterior near mint condition. First impressions were that the design is still quite prevalent 7 years later. The LED lights front and back, and hexagonal grill are still in style. The interior dash is quite pleasing and easy to operate. The leg room for a tall 6'2 is more than adequate, along with headroom. The driving experience is different than gas. When starting, there is no engine noise as the electric motor is in control. The noise when transferring to gas engine is minimal. Acceleration is decent, shifting is mostly smooth at times. Braking is sharp and that is a good thing! MPG is averaging 35/40. Getting 600-650+ per tank. My Sonata came with 4 brand new tires, brakes, and start battery. The electric battery pack still has 3 yrs or 32k left on the warranty. Hyundai is so confident about the battery that starting in 2012 they gave it a lifetime warranty, so I'm not worried of a failure. Bottom line: The 2011 Sonata Hybrid is still a substantial automobile with enough tech, design, comfort, and a great driving experience, for the average person.

Bought the Car in May 2011 and have been very happy with it. I came from an Infiniti G35 and while this car inst nearly as lively or quick as the infiniti, it has a much smoother ride once you get going. I can definitely feel the "lurch" when i start to accelerate but this isn't really a big deal when you get used to it. I have read complaints about the brakes but i haven't noticed any problems yet. I work about 25 miles from home so my daily commute is about 50 miles and I have been averaging 33.5 mpg and can get 36 if i feather the gas. I saw some reviews where people lose mpg when operating the ac but I keep my at 72 (econ) and it doesn't seem to affect my mpg to much.

I have now owned my Sonata Hybrid for just over six months. Like most of the early adopters of this automobile I had the check engine light issues until Hyundai figured out what was happening. Kudos to Hyundai for working diligently to solve the issue and provide us a $50 gift card as compensation for our trouble. Meanwhile, I've enjoyed a mid-sized luxury car ride with penny pinching average fuel economy of 38 mpg over 16,238 miles! Within the first few miles of driving I sense a little hesitation in the transmission but after a few minutes it's fine. I get lots of questions about my Sonata Hybrid and many compliments on the styling. I would not hesitate to purchase another Hyundai!

Buying this car was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made. It has been a huge disappointment. More importantly, it is unsafe and extremely dangerous to drive! The car has completely died on me twice. Once it happened on the 110 Freeway in Los Angeles and the second was on a busy parkway. The car just shuts off, literally STOPS! The "Check Charging System" light comes on and a warning chime sounds. The car does not switch to gas, but just stops running. I have had two near accidents with the car and cannot trust it.
