Bought this car at auction and got at GREAT DEAL on the BASE model, (didn't give the option to change) going on 2 years and still love it. Giving 'bullet points" Great acceleration...I like to drive fast, hugs the curves nicely. Great breaking (I drive 35 miles each way to work on a major highway in rush hour traffic) Good gas mileage (depending on driving conditions...but I drove a '99 Suburban @13 mpg) average about 24 mpg hwy. (17 gallon tank) Stereo is fine...not as good as my '05 Altima or 2000 Infiniti but it does the job. Heated front seats (comfortable) and outside mirrors...awesome. Back seats...not sure..but heard nice ride...heat/ac vents for passengers. Back seats do not fold down...but there is a small pass thru behind the middle arm rest..not sure why people get so upset about this...it's not a truck to haul things. The trunk is smaller than what I am used to (Chrysler 300/Chevy Suburban) but downsizing means just that. Groceries still fit. Console is smaller than what I am used to...but there are 3 usb ports and another (not sure the name but like a cigarette lighter)...oh and there is an ashtray and lighter. Not sure about the phone sync option...I don't use my cell when driving..but it is available...mic is right above my head. No problems with paint, gets washed every week. Oil changes run about $50 every 5000 miles......book says 7500. Uses Regular unleaded gas... My only complaints.... The front floor vents Not the best in snowy conditions....

Is this thing really a HUNDAI?

Having spent ample time in the seat of Mercedes' SL 55 and an AMG 63, I had low expectations of the 5.0 R-Spec Hundai. Uhhhh...WOW, was I wrong. For about 1/3 the cost, the Genesis Sedan is a fantastic luxury muscle car that hangs with the big dollar Europeans. Oh yeah, and for under $40K total, it came with a bumper to bumper 100K mile warranty. The Genesis has so far averaged roughly twice the gas mileage of my two previous Mercedes. Really? a Korean 429 HP luxury sedan that gets 27 MPG? What's not to like? Great price, fast, comfortable, reliable. The Germans had better up their game really soon, because I just bought two of these things, for less than my last European.

For the money I don't think you can get a better luxury sedan with regards to price to feature ratio. I got the R-Spec version which comes with just about all available options PLUS 400 Horsepower. Other cars in the same class with similar features that I looked at cost at least $10,000 more. Aside from a few minor annoyances (no display of current climate settings, trunk lid design that lets water flow into trunk when opening) I've been very pleased with the car.

Okay, I have read some horrible reviews on this car on this website and I can tell you from owning it personally for two years now that some people will complain about absolutely anything for no reason. I have had zero mechanical issues and zero paint issues. The one guy says his paint is "peeling off" - hogwash, unless he poured acid on it. I bought my 2013 Genesis as a brand new car in 2014 (it was the oldest brand new car on the lot) and the paint still shines like new today. The window sticker was over $40k but I practically stole it for $28k out the door. So for those of you that paid full window sticker or something close to it, I am sorry for your misfortune, but you should have shopped more wisely. Also, the guy complained about having to go to the "lowly Hyundai mechanics" instead of going to a high-end shop - well guess what - there was no high end shop when you bought the car and there still isn't up until this day. Although Hyundai has now proclaimed that "Genesis" is going to become their high end brand, building a whole line of new "Genesis only" dealerships and repair shops will take a long time. So the guy who complained about that also said he should have just went out and spent $125k and bought a Porsche Panamera in the first place. Yeah right - I know most people probably cross-shop a near-level luxury car versus a sports car for six figures - that makes total sense! You get my picture here? So, after driving my car for two years, I got exactly what I paid for - a very well appointed, near luxury car with all of the latest (at that point) gadgets. My one real complaint about the car is that even though it is supposed to have 333 horsepower and 330 pound feet of torque, it is quite slow to respond when you put the throttle down. You can almost count one Mississippi, two Mississippi, and then it decides to kick in. This can be a bit unnerving in a passing or emergency situation, but I can only think that the car is programmed that way to save on gas mileage. Otherwise my car is great, quiet, well composed, semi-sporty, holds the road well, is smooth, and gets pretty good gas mileage for a heavier v6 car. That other guy complained of "tons and tons of wind noise" - nonsense. There is a little bit of wind noise, but overall, I hear just a little bit of road/tire noise, but nothing the stereo won't drown out even at low levels. My only other small complaint is that the driver's seat front won't go down as low as I would like. Even with the motorized seat all the way down, the area below my thighs still seems a little too high. I can tilt the back of the seat up a little bit but that is not a perfect solution. So for $28,000 (after the awesome dealer discount), I got a fully loaded near luxury car with all the luxury trimmings that gets good gas mileage and has the longest warranty in the world. As far as comparing this car to actual luxury cars such as similarly sized Mercedes E class, a BMW 5 series, or an Audi A6, good luck trying to get one of those brand new and fully loaded for under $30,000.00. You would be looking at more like $60 to $65k. Heck, even the brand new Hyundai Genesis sedans are in the mid $50's now and it is based off the same underpinnings of my car. Realistically, you can't even get an American near luxury car such as a Chrysler 300, a Buick Lacrosse, or a Ford Taurus fully loaded for less than around $40k. And their warranties are not half as long as mine. I looked at every car out there at the time, and the Genesis sedan at the price I paid was the absolute best brand new car I could find. And I don't hang my head in shame when I go to my local Hyundai dealer; in fact, they are very nice, and know me by name. So I won't be cross-shopping the Porsche Panamera any time soon unless I win the lottery, and I don't think that anybody shopping for a car in the $30k range is going to be looking at anything even close to that either. So just take some of these reviews with a grain of salt. Additionally, if you are in the market for a certified used car, you could probably pick one of these up for half of what they cost new and still get that factory certified Hyundai warranty. Overall, I am highly satisfied with my Genesis. In fact, this is my fourth Hyundai and my other three were very reliable as well. Update October 2017. I still own my car. The paint still looks good. It still drives and rides comfortably and nothing has broken since new. The stereo/nav is a little slow to respond sometimes. It will show the Genesis logo on the screen until it wakes up. A little frustrating at times but it's not often and doesn't last. My only real complaint is still the sluggish throttle response. It has 333 horsepower but you have to wait for the computer to figure out when to use it. I took it on an overnight trip recently with 3 male adults and a car full of stuff. We still managed about 29 mpg on the highway which seems pretty good. Overall satisfied and car still under warranty.

I love my car and it has everything that I want in a daily driver. There is more than enough power but the Rspec 5.0 is tuned for efficiency so street racers will be dissapointed. Turn the ESC off for some mild hooliganism but you will still suffer from lack of agility problems and slow shifting. I get 23 mpg on a good day but no less than 20mpg if I put my foot in it regularly. There are no sport modes and so far no aftermarket ecu tuning available so you get what you get. If you like to upgrade your car then look elsewhere. I had the same MY v6 and it's an even better bargain since both v6 and v8 have more power than the electronics will ever let you use but the v6 gave me 24-28mpg regularly. The v8 is a bit smoother though. The used prices on the Gen 1's are extraordinary for what you get. Minor nit picks are: The Navigation is already out dated and it cost too much for current maps. It can't find half the Points of Interests that try to find. Voice search is almost useless. The sound system is great but has only basic equalizer setting (bass, mid, treble). Since I like heart thumping bass I added sub woofer but the car is so well insulated I can't hear it well enough in the cabin. The trunk is huge but the rear seats don't fold down. The ride is plush but get's jarring on certain surfaces. Acceleration from a roll is slow for the 430 HP that this car has. Blue link is expensive and worthless I only wanted it for remote start but since it is through your smart phone's internet it's not worth it. Lastly, I worry about the electronics being hackable.

So far in 2 weeks here is my review..I love the sound system, very quite inside the cabin, very fast and fun to drive. The ride is jittery on bad roads just like the reviews. On the highway this genesis rides like any luxury vehicle. So the Positives outweight the negitives so far. Im a big guy at 6'1 250 and the drivers seat and position is very comfortable with plenty of head and leg room. I bought this vehicle for 38.3k plus taxes 20% of the msrp.

I've had a lot of comments and inquiries from people once they take a second look at this car.I have the Cabernet Red colour. This has to be Hyundai's best kept secret.Lots of power and that 8 speed transmission shift smoothly. I traded in a CTS and people think I took a leap of faith going to a Hyundai Genesis....it was a good leap. Well styled...nice front end and good looking tail light system...no LED overkill. Update....,as of June 4, 2015.....I had this car leased and turned it back in back in Nov of 2014. Took out a Ford Explorer Limited on a two year lease. Looked at a Hyundai Sante Fey but they only have three year leases

Updating my previous review from August 2013, now have 27k miles on the car. Still have the same opinions as before, it could use a little better handling and maybe brakes that weren't quite as soft, but overall an excellent car. I have had no problems with the car and only have done oil changes and tire rotations, so very low cost to own. I actually average about 23 miles per gallon, but most of my driving is highway. If you can put aside the the lack of name brand, this is an excellent car for the money.

Best car I've ever owned

Tammy Sartor, 01/16/2018
2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 4dr Sedan (3.8L 6cyl 8A)
7 of 7 people found this review helpful

By far, this is the most comfortable, easy driving, quiet car I've ever owned. Hyundai was not even on my radar when I acquired this vehicle, but it is by far better to me than Lexus. I have only ever owned Toyota, so I was hesitant to purchase this vehicle. I purchased the extended warranty as a result. The seats fit me perfectly, and the heating part of the seats is divine. I will often just drive with it on instead of the heater (and sometimes in the summer with the AC on since it feels so good on my back). I am also blown away by the stereo quality. That, combined with the very little road noise, makes for such a pleasant driving experience that I'm not fatigued after a several hour road trip. What I don't like about this vehicle is it does not show the outside temperature continuously, it drips water into the trunk when the lid is raised in a rain, and the resale value is less than I would expect, say from a Lexus. However, the initial price is less also. I plan to drive the wheels off this car. The paint quality is excellent with some beautiful, not boring colors,( mine is Parisian Grey with a Saddle interior) the leather soft and high quality, the cruise control doesn't upshift on a grade like the Toyotas do, the transmission is excellent, LOTS of power for passing. It is effortless to drive.

A tweak to eliminate the throttle lag

Capt. Blowhard, 12/14/2018
2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 4dr Sedan (3.8L 6cyl 8A)
13 of 15 people found this review helpful

For those of you who are bothered by the throttle lag, there's a tweak that completely eliminates it, at the cost of city mpg. Open the air box (where the engine air filter lives). Take out the filter and secure the cover up and out of the way. At the bottom of the airbox is a small flapper valve, held shut by a small magnet. Simply remove this magnet (or reverse the magnet it it's holder). Put the filter back in and that's it, you're done. Go enjoy a lag-free throttle. You paid for 333 horses, use 'em. What's the magnet do? At low throttle settings (highway cruise and around town, low-acceleration scenarios), the magnet holds the flapper closed and forces the engine to draw air through a lengthy pipe that starts at the grill. Basically, restricting the amount of air available to the engine. This is how Hyundai can claim higher MPG in the EPA test cycle. I don't drive like the EPA does, so I removed the restriction and pay the price with lower city MPG, but I get an actual 333 horsepower car in return. Enjoy!

I purchased this car new in 2014. I traded in a Chevy Tahoe. I was taking a chance going from the comfort of my Tahoe to a Hyundai. In the 3 years that I have owned this vehicle, I have had no problems what so ever. Its awesome on the highway. I have to be careful because everything is so smooth and quiet that if I am not careful I catch myself going 90 plus. And that is with barely touching the accelerator. It has way more power than the V-8 Tahoe. The gas mileage on the highway is great. I got over 27 MPG on my last trip. In town its around 20 to 23. I change the oil myself cause I do not trust strange people working on my car. I change the oil every 4000 to 4500 miles with Mobile 1 and it still runs like new. I have 27,000 miles on it and do not anticipate any mechanical issues. I am very satisfied with my Genesis. I would buy another one but since they branched off to a luxury brand I cannot afford the price. The car still looks great and everything is functioning as it is supposed to.

"It's a Hyundai"

Jeff, 05/22/2019

Not to be negative when I'm saying "It's a Hyundai" but I bought the car new in 2014 and can't tell you how many times I was asked "what brand of car is that?" All positive. I realize that the car was a big leap for Hyundai and really was the start of a separate brand today for Hyundai. And when I bought it I realized that the car was a derivative from perceived higher end cars like Lexus and to an extent BMW. Resale value was not great after 5 years but thoroughly enjoyed owning the car.

2013 genesis 3.8L Sedan - Little things

Just purchased the car, used, with 27K miles. Have driven about 1500 miles so far. Positives: I do like the looks and the way the Genesis drives - quiet and comfortable, plenty of power. Complaints: Interior pieces break off - AC vent direction knobs came loose and blew out; Gas mileage takes a dive (avg 14) if you accelerate much. You have to be real careful with the acceleration to reach the 18 MPG city advertised low end; I have not driven car long enough to judge the reliability, so gave it a 3 for now, especially since some little plastic interior pieces have broken already.

I never had a car with this problem.I am finding a discoloration on the rubber below the trunk lid running above the trim like there was a problem when they painted the car.It is a Satin Pearl White that color they no longer make! Coming out of my Infiniti G37X lease I wanted to find a nice car that was affordable. Chose the Genesis based on a beautiful exterior design and a great value for the money. I couldn't believe the deal I was able to get on this car. Currently have 7k miles on it, no problems with the car so far. Very luxurious car, fast acceleration, no problems driving at 80-90 miles an hour on the highway and whisper quiet. My only complaint with this car is the handling is not as sporty as I would like but I knew that before I bought the car. I just couldn't bring myself to pay extra for the R-Spec.

I purchased this car after looking at BMW, Benz, Audi, and GM. I found this to be the best value. I have had a couple of problems that were taken care. The front and rear bumper had what was described to me by auto body repair technicians was bleed through. A product used to keep the bumper from cracking was turning my white pearl bumper into orange spotted eye sore. They told me that it was fallout and I said "hell no" and they repainted the front and bumper. The arm rest is cracking and I have an appointment on Monday. The rear camera goes blue screen on at least 12 times and they tell me that I have to recreate the problem for their techs (Good luck) in the shop. well, other than those things, I have received many compliments on my Genesis.

Absolutely loved this vehicle. I have been in the "automotive service industry" for over 35 years 20+ in manufacture dealer service departments. This car was extremely reliable and care free for me. Other than tires and regular services I spent no money on repairs, not one dime. I put front brakes on at 95,000 miles because I had them on hand and they were getting thin. The car handles very well. The ride is compliant and the interior very quite. On the road the power is very good for the size and cruising at 80 mph is like driving a Camry at 60 mph. The trans could shift a bit more firm under full throttle or in manual mode otherwise the driveline super. Nice brakes, sound system and steering feel. Should be able to turn off ANY radar cruise system as they apply the brakes when Joe can't drive makes that last minute cut in front of you. LOVE the car sad it was recently totaled. Getting a 2013 Equus today.

2013 Genesis Sedan V6 Technology & Premium

Excellent Value. New for 2013 Blue Link is great if you are not paranoid about Big Brother. Note you can only download one destination from the internet to your car at a time. Note that the feature rich new Ultimate Navigation is not touch screen like the new Premium navigation. Auto dimming outside mirrors are only available with the V8-R-Spec. I have the Silver with Cashmere interior on my V6. Only a black interior is available with the V8. The V6 uses regular gas and the V8 uses Premium gas. The steering wheel moves up and away when you exit but the seat does not move back like the infiniti/nissan. All seats are heated but only the drivers seat is cooled. Enjoy this Car.

I have been looking for some time and with the new transmission, bigger brakes, and updated exterior, I finally decided to buy. Cabernet pearl with tan interior. I bought the base model as I don't need navigation or the 17speaker sound system. This is my "grand kids and golf course" car. Still a bit apprehensive about Hyundai service on a luxury car, but time will tell. Had the 3-M chip film put on the hood/fenders, and got the all weather mats and trunk tray. Recommended by C/R, Phil Edmonds ( Lemon Aid ) and recently got the JD Power award for initial quality ahead of Mercedes, Lexus etc. so that says something. Why don't they sell more??

Pearson Hyundai gave me an offer I could not resist. Traded in my 3 years old 4.6 for this black/beige 5.0 last week and took it out for a 600-mile round trip to AC, NJ. Overall, the trip was a bliss. Silky smooth, powerful acceleration and quiet cabin made me feel like on top of the world. If I tried to maintain 2000 RPM or above, as recommended for breaking in the new car, I would be over the allowed limits. The car behaved at 80 mph the same way as it was at 40 mph: solid steering, dampened ride, and reduced wind, road noise. Powerful engine and quiet cabin are the two most important things I was looking for in a car for my long trips. I got both in this beautiful R-spec 5.0.

picked up car 2 weeks ago New,after driving and putting on about 400 miles found some areas disappointing . Contrary to what is on you tube from motor week, car and driver etc etc. yes car in quite if your stopped at a light or slow moving traffic. Surprised at the road noise level inside the cabin traded in a Chrysler200 (2011) S model which was much more Quite . Engine noise is Quite as well as wind noise, BUT that road noise is a killer Don't know if its the tires or what ???

Dealership Support Non-existent for A/C Problem

This 2013 Hyundai Genesis was our dream luxury car. Price was excellent for the standard equipment and options, the crash results were excellent, comparable to Mercedes, and the warranty was more than any other car on the market. We purchased the car new, from a Hyundai dealership in Feb. 2013. By May or June of 2013, we had a consistent problem of the air conditioner not keeping the car cool after 2 hours of driving. The air would slowly turn to ambient temperature and very humid. The unit was not freezing up. When the car sat, turned off, for 30 minutes, you could proceed on your trip for 30 minutes before the same thing happened. We took the car back to the dealership numerous times and no problem was found. They kept the car, drove it two hours on the interstate and said they couldn't duplicate the problem. We would take a road trip and sweat! Numerous meetings with the manager of the dealership got us nowhere. We asked that the air conditioner be replaced while still under warranty and we were told "we can't throw parts at the car when we don't know what's wrong. We have to send the old air conditioner back to the manufacturer and if we send it back and there's nothing wrong with it, we are penalized." Knowing that each dealership has allowances for write offs for items that just can't be fixed, which I told the manager, he still refused to help. I asked repeatedly for some solution to a brand new car with air conditioning that didn't cool for a 6 hour trip to see family. I asked that he replace the air conditioner while still under warranty because I knew he wouldn't "throw parts at it" when the warranty ran out. Saddest yet, the manager admitted that he had no doubt there was something wrong, but he couldn't do anything until he could duplicate the problem. My honest opinion is that if he didn't admit to duplicating the problem, then he didn't have to repair it. There's no way the car stopped cooling with us EVERY time after an hour and a half of continuous driving and it would not duplicate for the dealership for THREE summers. Yes, we've taken the car in for the same problem for three summers and we now have a car that is almost 5 years old and we can't drive it more than 90 minutes! The car is out of warranty and has 39,100 miles on it. I would tell anyone, this Genesis would be the best car we've ever owned if it had a decent air conditioner. Without a working air conditioner, none of the other wonderful amenities would ever make owning a Genesis worthwhile.

Researched the car for a few years then purchased the car of my dreams, WRONG!! Purchased it used from Carmax and luckily purchased the extended warranty which Carmax service is very unprofessional would not recommend!!! After 100k unpampered miles everything went downhill transmission, timing chain, tensioner, etc. After I got it out of the shop it then needed cat.converter. what a serious let down compared to other vehicles I have that are older, no reliability at all!! I only have 134K miles on it all services done, I'm seriously afraid to keep it, disappointed is an understatement!!!!

Fun and Smooth, but beware of snow!

I purchased this car about 2 weeks ago, and so far I'm relatively happy with it. The cabin is quiet, and the car is very powerful, making it very fun to drive. However, we recently saw our first glimpse of snow which resulted in a light dusting. Somehow, this incredible car was completely immobilized in a parking lot by a dusting of snow! I was nervous about purchasing a RWD vehicle because of this exact thing, but my fears were assuaged by the salesman and online reviews, all of which suggested that RWD vehicles have come a long way and are no longer a complete liability in bad weather. I still really enjoy driving this vehicle, but wouldn't recommend it for anyone who wants to use it as their primary vehicle where you may see even a little snow or ice.

Door Liner broken within 3 weeks for New Car

I brought Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec on (09/07/2013). Within one month (10/04/2013), I noticed that the rubber lining on driver side door which is glued has come off. Very disappointed that such thing happened. I compare it to my 18 year old Honda Civic which has 150,000 miles on it. Honda Civic which is one third the cost of Genesis and 18 years older has all it's liners still intact. I got a reply from their customer support. Surely the reply was not drafted by a person who is in customer support but was by a lawyer because language was not apologetic but it was stating that customer misuse can lead to such problems.

I purchased my Hyundai Genesis from Hyundai of Asheville, NC in Sept. 2013. By the time the dealer made their "add ons" and taxes, I paid a little over $50,000 for this vehicle. It rides and drives like a dream! Since the last part of 2013, I have become disabled by a neurological disorder that came on suddenly. It is becoming harder and harder for me to get in and out of the Genesis because it is low to the ground. My solution would be to trade the Genesis for a Santa Fe Limited, which would make it easier for me to get in and out. I found out that I was horribly upside down due to the Genesis depreciating 62% in 11 months! Stay away from this vehicle!!

The car has not been without issues. It had at least one recall item and one repair under the service contract that was fixed. It had to have the ABS module replaced post warranty and post service contract expiration date which was quite expensive (almost $3,000), but still cheaper than buying another car. With proper maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended schedule, which can be a little costly ($600 every 60,000 miles, to include with other services engine cleaning), it continues to run smoothly with 120,000 miles and more than 10 years later. The front driver side leather interior does not hold up as well in the hot Florida sun so a garage is highly recommended. Cross my figures.
