I bought this car brand new and I am still driving it with 170K on it. Everything on it still works as it should. I have read that people thik it is bad in the snow, Well I think it has a lot to do with the tires I did a lot of research on tires and with the ones I bought the car goes GREAT in the snow. I always run 55 - 60 on the slippery roads with no trouble and I have gone through powder snow that was coming over the hood. It also handles good on dry roads as well I had it up to 120 mph and handles great. The only repairs I have made were wheel bearing and 1 fuel injector, other than that just the regular sch mat. I would buy another and do not baby it!!! It is a lot of fun to drive .

I drive a 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS. The car is fantastic on gas mileage and is rather cheap to fill up! I love how easy the steering is along with how fun it is to drive. My brakes work great. The interior is rather ugly as is in most Elantras the good part about that is they come with so many cool options for seats and dash kits that you can purchase to really make the car feel like your own. It is a great buy and I would recommend all of my friends and family to purchase one just so they can see how comfortable and smooth driving the elantra gls really is. I do plan on purchasing a newer one this year and turning mine into a rally car. So if you wanna race lets be in touch haha.

I've owned my Elantra for almost a year, I bought it for around $4,500 in 2009. As I write this considering the age and mileage of my car I have boon somewhat lucky considering how hard I drive it. I have had some somewhat minor issues like CV joint problems and ball joint issues. Still I would definitely not recommend anyone buy one, unless it was in very good shape. Look into buying a reliable car and don't rush into buying. I wish someone would have told me this but instead I rushed and bought something cheap and I could have done better and so can you.

I am fresh out of college, and didn't have a great deal of money to spend when I went new car shopping. Actually I figured I would end up with a slightly used Corolla or Civic. I am so glad I took a look at my Hyundai. This car is awesome, gets good gas mileage, and with the warranty, either quality is good or they're going to fix it anyway. I am totally impressed!

Bought this car for my daily commute, inexpensive and good fuel economy. Not a single problem with this car, absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it. Have changed the oil only 7 times during 205k miles and still get the same fuel economy as new. Still have yet to change the clutch!!!!!! I didn't think they made cars this solid at this price point. First Hyundai I've purchased but it won't be the last. For the price, you'd have to be insane to pass on this car, it's built like a tank. I will be a Hyundai supporter for life.

When you own it for over a year...I bought my elantra dec 08/2000. Within 1 1/2 years had to replace right front bearing - not on warranty. This car has been a money pit. I kept up on my oil changes and warranty work at the dealer. The motor went @ 5000k over the warranty - used motor, towing and rentals - @ $5500. Hyundai did nothing to stand behind the car. Among many other things, i.e. struts, other bearing, cv joint etc., transmission went on 5th anniversary of car - $3000. I paid $15,000 for this car and have spent that much in various repairs. I have spent close to $30,000 on this car. My Mazda 323 was 7 years old before I had to spend $$$ on it. Buyer beware.

I bought this car in 2007 when it had 120,000 miles on it. It now has 190,000 miles, and I'm still driving it. There are good and bad things I've encountered. Good things- I love small cars, easy to drive, gets around very well in snow storms surprisingly, and it has never had engine or tranny issues. Bad things- I've pumped tons of money in this car to keep it going. From the radiator to the belts and everything in between. And the paint is horrible. It's looks like crap and all peeled off on the hood, top, and trunk. It looks horrible now. It's still getting me places, and after 5 years, this is the longest I've had the same car, but I can't wait to get rid of it.

I have had nothing but problems with my vehicle from the start!!! I've had my car stall out in numerous places. Have had an oxygen sensor replaced, two (2) wiring harnesses caught fire! I've gone through 18 halogen head lamps, my car viciously started shaking at ~ 30K miles, and the dealers didn't want to do anything about it. Also, the Hyundai corporate office will not be of any assistance to you. There "consumer affairs" department is a waste of money!

I bought my hyundia elentra with 80k miles on it after 9 years the car has been very reliable. I now have 150k and a few things started to fail. I went out and got a 2010 elentra because I didn't want to put more money in a car that I wasn't planning on keeping around much longer. A few bad things I've notice is the body by the wheels is rusting pretty good, and the radiator just went out. Not a huge deal as the price to get a new one is around $130 and to get it put in will cost around $300.

We bought our Elantra new in 2001 and maybe that's the difference from everyone else's experiences on here, as there seems to be a lot of negative reviews on these little cars, but ours has been a great little car only letting us down once. Turned out to be the spark plugs and wires needed to be replaced. I've never seen a car jerk back and forth and act that way before in my life, nor since. Sure enough the dealership said it replaced those parts and it ran great afterwards. The car now has over 177k on it and I have only had to replace the plugs and wires once since the originals went out on us some 12/13 years ago. Unfortunately at the time it was bad enough you couldn't even drive the car though and had to be towed in. Fortunately though it was under warranty! We've both said we'd buy another new Hyundai again without hesitation. It's been the best car we've ever owned other than our old Dodge's/Plymouth's from the 70's. Hyundai's do seem to be very sensitive to their engine parts, preferring genuine Hyundai replacement parts rather than after market stuff. This can be a bit expensive when it comes to sensors, although I have found some OEM parts on the internet rather cheap. A lot cheaper than what my local dealer sells them at anyway. Fuel mileage for this car has never been stellar and one would expect better mileage from a car/engine this size. Sorry, haven't figured it out recently and can't remember what it was, but it was low 20's in the city where you'd expect at least 25 mpg. This isn't really a trip car in my opinion. Seats can get uncomfortable on trips that take several hours. We've only used it once to go out of state and that was because our van decided to act up that weekend and riding in this for several hours was rough. It's a good little car for around town, but not comfortable enough for trips. Door seals seem to wear out prematurely on these Hyundai's. Don't know if it's a cheap rubber they use or what, but our drivers side door seal has been coming apart for years and I have noticed when looking at other Hyundai's some suffer the same problem. They also don't seem to have used any sealant to keep the rear door seals on the fame of the car as both sides of ours have come away repeatedly and the only way to stop it from happening was for me to apply my own sealant. Despite all of this we have loved this little car. It's been reliable and in the end that's been the most important part to owning any car. We would still buy another one if we had to do it over again and we will be buying an other Hyundai to replace this one when the time comes.

I got a used '01 Elantra which had served me well. Apart from regular maintenance, never had any major issues. Performance wise 0-60 in 8.4 (manual) and ~140 hp (exaggerated or otherwise), this car has got it for traffic light takeoffs & freeway merging. Although gearshift quality is a tad vague at times. Engine is slightly on the rougher side at high revs but has more than enough guts to take on compact crowd. Fuel economy is disappointing as well. In short, its a winner if low cost, reliability, driveablity (MT) is important & fuel economy, interior trim quality & image are not that important

I've had my Elantra for about a year and a half now and have 125k on it, I'm 19 and it is my first car, but I have driven a lot of my friend's Hondas, and other I4 engine cars. My Elantra out preforms all of them, even stock. Only bad thing is when I have a car full, power lacks a little, just like any other 4 banger. Drives smooth until about 55 and vibrates a little, stops after 70. Corners great, with minimal body roll with good struts. 22 mpg average, topped out at 35 mpg on a road trip. I drive this car really hard, and only had minimal damage. Defiantly recommend this car to anyone looking for a cheap reliable car that out preforms other cars in its class.

I used to own a 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS. The car only had about 95,000 mile on it.I really liked this car. The car ran great. I got about 21 miles per gallon on it. I only had it for about 5 months untill I got in a car accident. I hit the front tire of a scooter doing about 30mph. I am ok and so was the guy on the scooter. There was damage to my front bumper, fender and my hood. My claims adjustor called me and said the car was a total loss. If you do buy this type of car do not get in accident with it because it was built on the cheap side.

When I purchased the car I knew it needed work. I had three recalls on it when I bought it not including a bit more repairs than I wanted to make on a used car. The gas mileage is great, specially on long trips. Other than that it is just going to be the car I hang on to until it breaks down. Hope it lasts a few years with all the repairs.

Back in 2001, after a hail storm hit, we were looking for a new car. We decided to look around, and noticed Holmes (the dealer we bought from) had discounts on cars on the lot due to hail damage. Of course, we managed to get it new for 9,572 dollars due to hail damage, and a little persuasion. Love it. The only Major problem we've had was a broken thermometer. It does get a little noisy on the inside. It's 2.0 i4 gets enough Punch, and still returns good mileage. Nice exterior styling, however, the interior was slightly drab, but not too bad. Nice trunk space, and a locking gas door. Inside trunk handle is Nice. Trunk room is fantastic, and the reliability won't disappoint.

So far I am impressed with the looks and comfort of the Elantra. I got 35.9 mpg on a distance drive which is below our '01 Civic(41mpg) and '00 Saturn SL2 5-spd(40 mpg) and about equal to an 01 Sentra 2.0 L. It feels more like a Camry in quietness except for road noise. The handling seems very similar to the Camry---not sporty but good. Will it be reliable4---time will tell!

Just bought this car today, its a beauty. I love the interior design the Windows are smoked so I dont have to get them tinted. The previous owner put in custom sound and custom rims and it drives like a dream. I bought the car with 4 recalls on it and the dealership already advised me they will fix them with no cost and provide a rental. I only gave it "8" because I've only owned it for 7 hours now.

I bought this 2001 Elantra GLS 5-speed back in 2001. I'm in the market for a new car now, after about 8 years and 130,000. The car still runs fine, but little things like the power windows, catalytic converter, etc. have given me reason to buy another car (possibly another Hyundai). The car was 100% reliable through out most of its life so far. I have driven it through all kinds of weather conditions, and even drove it cross-country. Despite two low-impact collisions, only cosmetic damage was done; the car drove on as if though nothing happened. I still have the original clutch on it, and it works fine! I think its time to retire this one; it served its purpose, and served it well.

Great 1st car. This is my 1st car and I love it. Gave me some trouble like the leaking transmission, headlight burnouts, fading dash clock, and the airbag light. I'm 18 years old and this car has been fun to drive with a decent amount of space. Other Young people like me would choose a Honda over a Hyundai but I chose the Hyundai. Still runs strong with 156,780 miles!

I bought my 01 Elantra gently used in 2002, because it appeared to be the best value. And it has been. I've not had to pay for any major repairs in the 7 years and 100,000 miles I've owned. Def. the lowest cost to own car I've ever had. The car is not sexy, so I've been a bit bored with it ( since I bought it), but will keep driving until it starts needing major repairs.

I bought the elentra for the warrenty. No other company offers one as good. It's burning more gas then what the sticker displays. I already had to take it in for sevice twice one was the check engine light came on.. it was fault spark plug wires which ended messing up the plugs. i did the plugs myself they did the wires. around 20000 miles i start feel a lost in power. so i went to dealership to tell them i thing the clutch is slipping. they "look" at it and agree with me and say i need a new clutch, but i have to pay for it

I purchased my 01 Elantra in early 2002. To date, I've had no significant repairs, and have sunk very little money into the car. It's not the fastest, greenest, most luxurious, or best performing car on the block. But it is very reliable, and has just enough comfort, safety, mpg, and performance to make it passable. If you're looking for a great value, and reliability in a commuter car, this is it. Nothing fancy, but it does the job, without time in the shop. ( Which can be a huge deal if your husband needs to borrow your car all the time because his Saab is in the shop every week!)

Don't buy these cars the warranty is a joke, hey they let you talk to a consumer advocate, huh right they consume your money. This was my second Hyundai first one lasted 225,000 miles and was running well when I sold it. This is my last Hyundai and I tell everyone I talk to to avoid these cars now. They changed something, and no longer need loyal consumers. Stay away from these cars.

I had this car for about a year. I bought it with electrical problems and had it fixed at a repair shop instead of the dealer. That saved me about $400. I had to do regular maintenance after that and averaged about 34 mpg. The reason I do not have it now is because I was involved in an accident. The car rolled 3 times and my son and I were virtually unharmed. This car gets my vote!

I have had nothing but problems with this car from the day I purchased it, BRAND NEW. The alignment was way out of whack the minute I drove it off the lot. Also, I failed inspection, on a BRAND NEW CAR, because the right rear brake wasn't up to code. A week later, the pulley for my power steering just fell off and I lost control of the car. Luckily, I was only doing 30mph. The pulley, again, on a brand new car, was stripped. Now I am having problems with the rotors, and the hose for the coolant was corroded and had to be replaced. The car is only 3 years old. I am sorry, but this was a horrible buy and would never recommend this car to anyone.

This car was my life saver. I had previously owned klunker after klunker and finally decided to buy a newer car. The warranty was what primarily drew my attention. 100,000 miles or 5 years on a slightly used 2001 Hyundai Elantra. The car looked gorgeous and had plenty of room for a compact car. I drive long distance all the time and was happy to finally have a reliable car. No more braking down and having to call AAA. The car runs beautifully. And because I drive long distance, I've had time to experience the comfort and roominess of the interior. Just recline the seat and relax. I love my Elantra!

Even for an economy car, this car falls short of the competition. The handling is sloppy, acceleration is weak, and same goes for the brakes. The only "plus" about this car is the gas mileage, which is still not too good for a 2.0 4-cylinder (est. 25-27 highway). The interior is not that appealing, and the seat is quite uncomfortable, and after about a year, the interior smelt worse than my friend's '93 Ford Escort. There is absolutely no style whatsoever. I've seen pizza delivery cars more appealing than this tin can on wheels. Get a Civic or Jetta.

I've had my Elantra for 12 months. It has been in the shop 5 times,I’ve been told it is not fixable. This car was a big mistake. Engine problems, clutch and many more problems. Another problem with the car is I have filed the Lemon Law and after months of calls, Hyundai has agreed to repurchase the vehicle, but that comes with a stiff penalty, the user fee was more than expected.

I was hesitant at first because I couldn't see how they could pack all these options into a car in this price range. My wife's 2001 Neon (Bought around the same time)has been in for three recalls and numerous cosmetic and mechanical problems. My Hyundai (which I paid almost $3000 less for) has had nothing but oil changes and tire rotations. I LOVE THIS CAR!!!

My 2001 GLS 5-speed rolled 15K shortly after turning a year old July 9. This car has performed wonderfully during its first four seasons here in Michigan, with only oil changes and tire rotations. No mechanical problems, no recalls. Interior is very comfortable, HVAC is incredibly efficient, audio is good, and it is still very fun to drive. Two very minor but persistent noises (a buzz, a rattle) are present in my vehicle, noticeable only because the interior is otherwise very quiet. This has been my best car thus far. Happy!!

The car is very fast for its price and is faster than the civic which is signifigantly more money. I have had no problems with my car, no noises or anything. I like the interor but I am going to get racing leather seat covers and door panels. rpms I love my car and don't know why some people are having so many problems.

This car is a champ! Quality is amazing for the price. Did fantastic in a driver's side t-bone crash...no injuries (except my anger of a 4 month old car being hit!) Gas mileage over 30mpg running the a/c. I have hauled bedroom furniture, an adult with a broken leg and been on serious shopping excursions...all seperate occassions, yet plenty of extra room.

Good performance and power. Comfortable and very reliable. Gas mileage is acceptable. AC is strong and cools you off quickly on a hot day. Warranty is what sold me. This is the second Hyundai Elantra I own and will not be the last.

Very reliable silver 5-spd. Only problem- right headlight went out a week ago- but was covered by warranty. As for fuel economy, I average 25.6 mpg during a week of rides between my home and school (about 2 or 3 miles away) daily, and 20 mile trips to work 4 times a week. Not bad considering the way I drive the car.

I love my GLS. There is nothing fancy about it, but it gets me where I want to go. Isn't this the same response that many people give for Hondas and Toyotas? Had to replace the A/C fan almost immediately because of factory installation, but otherwise perfect.

I purchased my Elantra brand new in February of 2001. It has proven to be the most reliable car i've ever owned. I have not had any major repairs and it runs great. I recommend this as a used car option even over 100,000 miles. Great and affordable for a high school or college student.

Originally I thought it was an excellent value for the amount of standard features you get plus the warranty. I have not been happy with the 'Shift Flare' problem that the automatics are notorious for. Brought my vehicle in for checking because the transmission fluid was black and smelled burnt. Dealer flushed the system and put in new fluid. 300 miles later the fluid is turning black again. Was told by the dealer that "Hyundai transmissions get hot", that is why the fluid turns black. "Don't worry, you have a 100kmi warranty, if the transmission goes bad we will just replace it". Based on the black transmission fluid, I expect the transmission to fail.

Had my elantra for 8.5 years and had NO problems. Started up every time. Performed routine scheduled maintenance only. I bought it straight out of college. Would not have just upgraded, except I wanted 4 wheel drive after a bad winter last year. Was worth way more to me than trade in value. Gave it to friends in need of a car.

This is my first experience owning a foreign car and so far, it's been a great one. My Elantra has been a ot of fun to drive. I have 20K miles on it and the only problem so far has been a burned out headlight which was easily replaced. I have the smooth shifting 5 speed and get great gas mileage. My friends call it the K Beamer (as in Korean BMW). Great looking exterior fit and finish, a very functional and well though out interior and a larger then expected trunk. My Hyundai dealer has also been a pleasure to work with. I plan to by the larger Sonata for the family later this year. Way to go Hyundai!

Great car! We were looking for an "appliance" car for my wife to drive to offset the bad ride my Neon R/T was rapidly becoming. However, I refused to jump on the Honda bandwagon after seeing how decontented and bland Civics had become. We're very pleased. It's all we expected, and really fun to drive too.

Paid $10,745 out-the-door for a base model w/ A/T and mud guards. No problems in 15,400-miles. Get 32-MPG with my approx. 80% highway commute. Impressive number of standard features and nice interior (power w/l/m, adjustable driver's seat, plenty of storage compartments, padded armrests, hooks on the floor mats, map lights, overhead storage compartment for glasses, vanity mirrors on both sun visors, retractable cup holder for rear seat). Very good build quality. Nice styling. Powerful engine. Very good ride (easy to handle, easy to modulate brakes, soaks up bumps well, little engine and road noise intrudes cabin). Great car, excellent value.

We have had this car for two years. I think it is a great car for the money. It isn't fast but has enough power to pull 4 adults up a hill without feeling like you will not make it. With dual front and side air bags and a nice interior there is no reason to pay more for a Honda or Toyota unless you just like the name.

I bought this car in spring of '04. I have had a few minor mechanical issues. I have kept up with required tune-ups and maintenance. The gas mileage starts to suck after the car hits about 60000 miles. The paint looks like crap (my car is black, so you can only imagine), and the interior is not very durable at all. I have really babied this car. I love driving it and have actually considered "upgrading" to a new one. Just kind of squeamish investing all that money if in a couple of years it's going to visually be an eyesore like the one that I have now!!!

This was my second new car purchase and I had been researching the Elantra for a while. I was really impressed with the standard features, reviews by other owners and the price. It has been reliable with no real problems. The only complaints I have are the drivers seat doesn't adjust very well. It seems to move with me like it is not latching very well. I haven't had a chance to take back for a check-up on that. My other is just about the dealership. Their selling practices are a little "high pressure". Other than that, I am very pleased with my Hyundai Elantra.
