"Honey" the Hyundai
I bought my 2001 Elantra on an impulse while out looking to replace my gas guzzling Cadillac. It caught my eye on the lot and I wanted to drive it but didn't think it would be in my price range. I test drove it and noticed it only had 45,000 miles on it & it felt tight like a new car. The seats were and remain firm yet comfortable and it had surprisingly strong acceleration. I've had it for 2 years now, and had 2 probs. One was a sensor that was fixed under warranty. The other was a wheel/hub bearing that cost $400.00 to fix. Other than that it has been great! Now when I look at or test drive other cars and get back into the Elantra I find myself asking why I am looking at other cars.
Can't Beat It!
I originally leased my 2001 Elantra when new and bought it out. Still love the interior/exterior styling. Fuel economy is good for a car with a 2 litre engine but not great. Good handling for a car at this price point, but slightly ponderous at low speeds. Brakes could be better. Body hardware has held up very well. Resale value could be a little better, too. Haven't needed any major repairs - just new brakes and tires 36 months in. Overall, reliability has been excellent, flawless winter starts. Time will tell whether the car holds up as a used vehicle. The Elantra is a worthy car and almost fully competitive with Honda, Toyota, et al. Buy one, you'll be happy.

I LOVE This Car!!!!!
This car may be a 4 cylinder but it has get-up-n-go when you need it. It's a classy lil car. My aunt has a Mercedes and she says my Hyundai rides just as smooth....how about that!!! Hyundai's will always be in MY future plans!!!
cheap car, good warranty but need it
Bought the car brand new. Only a couple of minor problems in the first 6 months. The sun roof quit working. After that major problems. We blow all the lights every 6 months. The car has had 2 new computers, a couple of wiring harnesses, sunroof completely inop and will not replace it, mulitple plugs, wires, and coils. Spent 3 months straight in the dealership 2 years ago with no loaner. It is a nice car and has been really well maintain but has severe electrical problems no seems to be able to figure out. It completely dies and won't run or runs and dies and an hour later will start just fine then die again. Dealt with for 3 years. Only compensation 100,000 mile full warranty.
Your Money's Worth PLUS
I wanted a reliable, fuel-efficient, 4- dr sedan with a sporty look, but could not afford a Honda. I found the that the Elantra had comparable features but priced much lower. I bought the Elantra with 64K miles (& an extended warranty - just in case) and I don't regret my decision, it runs like like a dream. So far its been an excellent car - no work necessary. Its roomy enough for my 6'2 boyfriend to drive comfortably. I get about 26 mpg (highway & city mix.) It handles metropolitan rush hour traffic very well and it looks good doing it. I would definitely consider another Hyundai when I am looking for my next car.
Live and Learn
I thought it was a good purchase for the money. They Hyundai has treated me better than my last car (Saturn) but the costs in maintenance and repairs has become too much. I will not purchase a Hyundai again. Too many issues with this car. Spend the extra money and get a higher end vehicle.
The WORST Hyundai I've ever had!
Prior to the Hyundai Elantra, I had the Accent, and before that, the Excel. I will never buy another Hyundai again. I bought the Elantra with 10,000 miles on it. At 26,000 miles I had to replace the clutch. I put 138,000 miles on the Excel and nearly 80,000 on the Accent and never had clutch problems. The engine was replaced at 51,000 miles. Fortunately, this was handled by the warranty. Then, at 64,000 miles the clutch went out again. Why? Because HYUNDAI installed the wrong size, but it was MY fault. Another $1400 to the dealership. I get it back and the drive home the right front hub goes and another $300 later, my car is back home. I'm lucky to get 25mpg...
So far so good, no problems
Bought this from Colorado for a cheap second car. Excellent gas milage. Drove from Amarillo TX to Dallas TX and all around Dallas on 14 gallons of gas. Hard to drive the speed limit, feels like you are crawling. Will be easy to get tickets in. Comfortable, reliable so far. Car was a dealer demo for a Hyundai executive. Bought it with 11,000 miles and now has 24,000 miles. Went ahead and got the 100,000 mile warranty and have not been to the shop yet. Resale seems a little low, trying to sell at this point as I no longer need the car.
Great Little Car, Better Dealer Service
I have 47,000 miles on car with no problems to date. Have enjoyed car so far. But the best part seems to be the excellent dealer service. Dealer will get car in and out quickly, and will provide a loaner car if my car will not be immediately available! With the new JD Power survey results (Hyundai is number 2 for quailty), I'm hoping that the resale value will start to hold better. As for me, I will drive this car for at least another 100,000 miles or more(unless I trade it for a new Sonota).
Very User Friendly!
I bought this car almost brand new. It had only 6,000 miles when I got it in 2001. I have driven this car all over the USA, putting close 90,000 in the 5yrs I have owned it. I have never had mechanical problems out of this car. I can say it has been good to me. The car is very very reliable and the gas mileage is great also. The only major downside is the resale value. You better never try to sell it coz you will be SHOCKED!! The car depreciates at an alarming rate.
Great Little Car!
I have enjoyed this car greatly. It is much better than the Accord I used to have. I drive mostly city and consistently average around 28 mpg which is not bad. One of the best things about this car, though, is its performance (especially with a manual). This car actually has torque (unlike my previous vehicle). This makes for a peppy car (that gets better with a few modifications). Overall a great value.
Buyer beware
I have never had a car with so many problems in my life. The headlights have gone out simultaneously 6 TIMES, which the dealer claims is a coincidence. The car has been at the dealer and mechanic more than my husbands 1991 Ford Escort. As soon as one thing is fixed, another goes wrong, many things over and over again (like the air bag for instance). I have a friend who bought the same car at the same time and she is having some of the same problems.
Warranty to trap you into a low quality
I have had the worst luck with hyundai. My elantra had the gas pedal stuck and at 3000 rpms on the freeway as i was trying to change from one to another. The warranty is NOT worth the car as I was in the dealership EVERY month!! The input speed sensor, output speed sensor, warning lights, check engine light-hose leaks, ALL on seperate occasions. Then the dealership(Anaheim) told me nothing was wrong with my ac but it has a hideous sound when i turn it to four. they waited until after my warranty expired to tell me NEVER again will I buy from them. The warranty is not worth the endless trips to the dealership (with no loaner either).
Good auto for the money
Was a great car to drive. Gas mileage could be better.Trunk lid did not open high enough and would always hit my head on the latch. Another weak point were the front disk brakes. Had to turn rotors 3 times in 60000 miles. Had to replace rotors and calipers. Had to replace the radio twice and needed relacing again when I sold the car at 73000 miles.
Good little car
Good little car for the money. Warranty is not what its cracked up to be. Gas mileage could be better for the size of the car. Clutch is slushy, almost NO feedback. Died after 30,000 miles and found out it ISN'T covered under the powertrain warranty. Dealer wanted $1300 to replace, went locally and had it done for $800. Never had a clutch last less than 80,000 miles before.
Good Deal
My review is plan and simple. I'm a big commuter. I'm talking 2,400 miles a month. I've had this car for one month now. I'm very satisfied with it. I bought it used, (second owners still get 5yr/60,000 coverage on the drivetrain). Try gettting that from Honda. At anyrate, the only flaw with these vehicles is the front seat track locking mechanisms. They have a tendency to move if they're not fully locked in. You have to put some large force into them to lock them in. The seat movement is why their crash test score isn't as high. Just push your seat hard until it clicks twice and you're fine.
I MISS HER!! would suggest to anyone..
Ok, i had my car for 2months, until a drunk driver smashed her. I found a steal on 80,000 miles for 5,000. This car had such great pick up. It was amazing on gas. i am a college student so gas mileage is everything. i loved this car. it was cute for a girl car and peppy when it needed to be or when i pushed it. I loved this car, was the best i have had. i went from a 89 grandprix se. to a 96 dodge neon, to the best car i had had so far 01 elantra gls. I am tempted to go for another to last me. I can 100% bet it will last me thru college. i would suggest this car to anyone. especially a parent trying to find their new driver an amazing first car!
worth every penny
From the day I drove it off the lot I've never regretted owning my elantra, milkruns, cross country jaunts, piled high with friends into town; it's simple interior makes it easy to clean and pack full of stuff. The fold down back seats have been a huge convenience as I've moved big pieces. The engine is great for the size of the vehicle, and once I replaced the factory-standard tire I found the ride to be really enjoyable! Fuel efficient, especially for a car form 2001, it's had a two mechanical issues in five years, but the warantee is the real deal, I didn't pay a penny.
worst realibility & bad dealer service
This car was driven only 70K miles. Dim light burnt out, both at the same time. Passenger power windows stop working. Having contious problem with transmission at 70K. Warranty, which is a complete deception as if you are the second owner instead of 100K/10 YR you only get 60k/5YR. The service/dealership are rude and abusive. Would get charged for a simple repair 5 times more than it cost at normal shop. Never would buy a hyundai again. You get service and care adequate for the money you pay. Next time would spend couple of thousand more and buy toyota. Hyundai is realiable and cheap until the first repair or 60K. Engine wiring harness cost $1100!!!! Dont waste your money on this garbage
Satisfied with my Elantra
My elantra has been dependable and comfortable. I made the purchase because of the warranty. There have been several trips to the shop to repair sensors, the same ones most of the time. It has been a few months now and it seems to be taken care of. The pop open lid for the gas tank sticks a lot. Overall its a good car for the money.
CUTE CAR
I HAVE FOUND THE HYUNDAI TO BE A GOOD VALUE FOR THE PRICE... THE SIZE IS GOOD AND IT DRIVES VERY NICE WITH PLENTY OF SPACE.. HAVE TAKEN IT ON TRIPS AND NOT A PROBLEM WITH GOOD PICK UP AND COMFORT RIDING... NICE MEDIUM CAR.
Love it
Okay, going on 2 yrs here and couldn't be happier with this car. Amazing build quality, dealer responds to every single detail (replaced headlamps for free!). Car has more power than most realize and 4 out of 5 friends would buy one in a minute. Company is purchasing one as a general use vehicle on my recommendation.
A Great Experience All Around
This is my first experience owning a foreign car and so far, it's been a great one. My Elantra has been a ot of fun to drive. I have 20K miles on it and the only problem so far has been a burned out headlight which was easily replaced. I have the smooth shifting 5 speed and get great gas mileage. My friends call it the K Beamer (as in Korean BMW). Great looking exterior fit and finish, a very functional and well though out interior and a larger then expected trunk. My Hyundai dealer has also been a pleasure to work with. I plan to by the larger Sonata for the family later this year. Way to go Hyundai!
The best car for the money
with the actual Hyundai's quality there is no reason to buy much more expensive japanese cars like Honda, toyota or nissan
Unsafe
My 2001 Elantra required repairs that should not have been required in a vehicle this Young. Several items are severe safety hazards and Hyundai refused to acknowledge that it was a problem. Serious issues included a rusted out lower control arm which sent the vehicle to the other side of the road as the front wheel went slamming back into the wheel well. Also a melted door harness which Hyundai had a tsb stating it was improperly sealed. In spite of that fact, Hyundai refused to fix mine because the mileage exceeded 100k. Other uncommon repairs were required and are too numerous to list
Thank you Hyundai!
My other gas guzzling vehicles sit while I drive this dependable gem everywhere. It has everything a I need, moonroof, cd, cassette, a/c, power locks, Windows & everything has worked from the beginning. Great gas mileage approx 34 hwy. My wife calls it her "little beamer". Reliability is a vast understatement. Its 7 years old and I still have 3 years left on the drivetrain warranty that I didnt have to pay extra for. What puzzles me is other auto makers claim to make better cars but charge you extra for an extended warranty. Hyundai has the guts to back up their product and I love it! They hit a grand slam!
Great car!
I have owned this car since 2001 and it has been great! Relatively few repairs over the years - very dependable, especially for the price! Would recommend Hyundais to anyone looking for a great car at a reasonable price!

Great First Car!!
As far as I'm concerned, this car is the best first car for a teen. Not only is it small making it easy to drive, great on gas making it cheap, but it is also reliable. Only issues I have run into have been with the cheap plastic used in the interior such as the center console latch and the door handles and locks. Other than that, I have put 120k on it with literally not repairs being needed. Highly recommend, just very ugly car.

Pay more for somthing else.......
72 thousand miles and transmission will not shift. But not a transmission problem. Warranty is a crock. Hey Folks you pay for what you get. Also sun visors fell off, auto locks stopped, not to mention a dash light problem. The car is simply crap. Don't risk it. Pay 3 to 5 grand more for a good car.
