I bought a 2000 Elantra used with bout 58k on it. I only had to replace the altenator, battery, and the front left wheel bearing. Great car, ran great, was a lil sluggish to shift under heavy acceleration. I bought it in 9/03 and then totaled it 1/05 with 86K miles on it, when some twit in a rental made a left in front of me. Seemed to crush a little to easily, the whole front end was trashed. Sounded good, handled good and no repairs, except the aforementioned ones. For reference the wheel bearings suck to do on your own. The old filter isnt the easiest to get at. But it has a nice ride, comparable smooth to some smaller cars. OH and the air bags work great :)!

No longer a good used buy

I bought this car with about 65,000 miles on it, and now have 110,000. If I'd written this review before the 95K mark, it would have been a glowing review. However, since then just about everything has come apart-- the transmission (and I'm not one to push a car and don't live in the city), the power window, horn, check engine light, oxygen sensor, wiring etc. This is one of those cars that falls apart at 100K, and you're unlikely to find one with lower miles these days. The Elantra was essentially redesigned the *next* year, so the newer models may well be worth looking at.

We've had the car almost 2 years and it is a very dependable car! Gas mileage isn't the greatest, but for the size has enough room for us to travel around in. Pick-up is a little lacking on onramps to highways, so more horsepower would be an advantage.

This stylish car has been through 2 Canadian winters, with not a thing gone wrong with it. I would've awarded it first for the Edmunds 2000 Economy Car Comparison, because I've test driven the other 2 that were ahead of it, and they just don't compare. Of course, the price is a pure bargain for what you get: class leading horsepower, a killer CD sound system, power everything, comfort, style, and an engine that can really move! This is, by far, the best 2000 economy car around, and the redesigned 2001 Elantra proves to be even better, way to go Hyundai!

I bought my Elantra in '99 when my car (an '89 Corsica I would LOVE to have back) died unexpectedly on a road trip. As a recent college grad (with a degree in teaching no less) I was strapped for cash. I needed an affordable car with a great warranty. I must admit, for the money, the car has performed well. However, the options are limited and the car shifts horribly, lurching forward often at high speeds. In it's defense, I have put a lot of miles on the car (80000 in less than 4 years); however, I have maintained service as well. The bottom line: if it's all you can afford, go for it. If you can afford something else, you'll probably be happier!

I love the car! I have put 65,000 miles on the car in 2 1/2 years with no problems! The only thing that I had to replace were the tires. I had the car in a 60mph accident on icy roads head on with a suv and thanks to the cinstruction of the car my wife and I walked away with out a scrach.

OVERALL: This car ('00 wagon w/everthing) is the best big purchase I have ever made. 42K mi. - no repairs and no major disappointments. INTERIOR: The A/C is really strong, but it sucks power. Cupholders are lame. Back seat is small, but it's fine if you're taking the work gang to lunch. FUEL: My one gripe has been fuel economy. As bad as 21 mpg, as good as 34 mpg. ENGINE: I can go >80mph and not feel like the car is straining. It's pretty quiet for a 4-banger. SUMMARY: I'd get another in a second. I was considering the Focus, Legacy and VW Passat. I saved $2K-$13K and got all the car I needed.

I started out driving an 85 Accord, but after it was totaled in a wreck with a drunk driver, I got my Elantra. I love it! The cassette player broke, but the speakers are great. I love the compact size, you can squeeze through tight spaces and park almost anywhere. The gear selector safety lock is a pain sometimes. This car has a lot of power for a four cylinder. I was impressed. Handles very well, very easy to drive. The fuel economy isn't bad, but thought it might be a little better for a four cylinder. The trunk is also suprisingly spacious. This is a great car for a high school student.

I needed a reliable car that can haul a lot of bulky stuff. This thing is probably the best purchase decision I have ever made. This thing has been awesome. My only complaint is that the factory (Kumho)tires gave out pretty soon. I got every option possible and nothing has broken yet. (26700 mi.) Mileage has been a little disappointing in the city, but I make a lot of 0-2 mile trips with A/C on in Phoenix weather. Highway = 33-34 mpg. City 22- 24 mpg.

Most consumers only based their car buying trend just by known brand names of car prouduct lines,Hyundai proved them worng. This cheap in price but great in performance even better than known compitators i.e Honda civic, Toyota Corolla etc.powerful engine (140hp)which is much powerful than the Toyota corolla CE(125hp).I have this car now for about 6 month and haven't seen any problem on it. I will advice America to turn their face for buying such economical and reliable cars with out digging in to their pockets for simillar even lesser cars just because they have stayed on the market for long but their quality going south.

This car has been a pleasure to own. Bought it new in winter of 99 and have minimal problems (2) First had the speedometer go bad (under warranty) and second, had a front wheel bearing replaced at 72k (under warranty). This little wagon can haul just about anything. Have hauled tons of stuff from the garden center, hot water heater, dining room set, and a refrigerator! It is comfortable on a trip and gets anywhere from 33 to 38 mpg. Got 42k out of the factory tires and the second set seems to be wearing even better. Besides two warranty repairs, just the usual wear items of tires, brakes and tune-up.

I bought this car in Nov. of 1999, lured by the low price and warrenty. My experience with cars in the past have been horrible, and I was hoping for a bit of luck this time. Turns out that I found it. I have averaged about 32,000 per year on the car, and I have not experienced any major problems to date. I was sorley afraid that all of the major components would break down as soon as I hit 100,000 miles, but it has not happened yet. If all of the cars built for this year perform as mine has, I would recommend it to anyone.

I bought this car for value and I think I have it. I'll be paying it off tomorrow and know that with the warranties it's guaranteed to last many more years! The transmition is my biggest complaint since it's not-so- tight and it had to be repaired. Hyundai's not perfect but they've come a long way, baby! So many standard features for very little money.

I have had only one thing go wrong with this car. Spark Plugs and wires went bad causing the car to run rough and the check engine light to come on. Anyway this also happened to someone else I know, so don't worry if yours does the same thing, just try new plugs/wires first. That is such a minor issue to have happened with my $12,000 Hyundai in 110,00 miles that I can only say that this is one reliable vehicle that will treat any owner well. I bought it for the warranty, assuming they were built to last, and I was right. I love the car.

As a newly licensed teen with not a lot of money I needed something reliable and safe. But at the same time I couldn't afford a big SUV with high gas-mileage or a newer car. Also, I wanted something cute, but most older cars look blocky and ugly. I got it all in my trusty 2000 Elantra for a low price. I just love my car and my parents actually like it too, so win- win. I've had it since July and haven't had any problems except I had to have the spark plugs and wiring replaced and a routine oil change. It's been a great car though.

I bought this car used in the fall of 2004, with about 50K miles on it. I've been driving it almost everyday since and have never had a single problem! It runs really well and didn't have any problems starting up in Chicago winter weather. Fuel economy is decent too. While it isn't particularly luxurious or anything, it's still a great car especially when you consider its price.

My Elantra is one of the best cars I've ever owned. Bought it for the price, warranty, looks, economy. I've had it for just over 3 years and have 75K miles on it. The only problem I've had is with the transmission getting stuck in 2nd gear twice so far. Otherwise, it runs great, gets good gas mileage and is very dependable. I'm planning on buying a new Elantra this weekend if I can get another good deal!

This car is a gem. I love it. I've owned mine for two years and two months now, since I bought it new as a late model in '00. The engine is peppy, the styling is nice, the fuel economy is terrific (avg. 32mpg). I have heard reports of bad paint, but I keep mine looking like she's brand new, and the paint is fine! Just buying the first set of tires after the Michelin MXV 4's went after 38,000 miles!! Pretty good for OE tires!

I have been very pleasantly surprised with my Hyundai Elantra. For a small, economy car it is sensibly designed, roomier and more comfortable (by far) than any other car in it's class that I test drove. It has very peppy acceleration for it's size (a good size engine, but of course you sacrifice some fuel economy) and handles very well. It is also very quiet for a small car and has great visibility. Combine that with a killer warranty (I've still got two year's worth of bumper to bumper) and what more can I say? The only negative I've discovered about my car is that the power door locks are really weird, and more than a little annoying. But overall I am very pleasantly surprised by this car!

Well I just rolled over 200K with mine. Bought this thing in 2001 with just a few thousand on it ( demo car) and have never had any trouble with this car. Never put me on the side of the road ( besides a broken belt twice) and has given me great MPG even though i tend to drive fast. It has been wrecked 4 times and even with hard hits in the back all that was replaced was a trunk and back bumper. If your looking for a used car with great MPG ( almost 30 )and reliability then I highly suggest this model.

I was the 2nd owner, and had it for miles 77K through 114K. During that time, I replaced: front rotors, cracked exhaust manifold (free recall fix), plugs and wires, window regulator, o2 sensor, washer pump, horn, wiring, transmission (OUCH!). The previous owner had replaced the mass air flow sensor and throttle positions sensor. The entire exhaust rusted out too-- salt is tough up here though. Still, that's a lot of repairs for ~30K! And I did the timing belt stuff and tires, which is routine-- but it hurts to do all that and then have the tranny go.

Have had a couple elec. doodads replaced before 30K . The idle being rough when the car is warm and in gear. Rare instances it wants to die, but it starts right back up. This is progressive problem worked on 3x not fixed. Trans. has started leaking at 40K

After 4-1/2 years and 116000 miles, I still like it. It does everything, and has been incredibly reliable. I do my own work, other than the timing belt changes. I use synthetic oil at 6000 mile intervals, and have gone thru two sets of tires, but no brakes yet nor exhaust. Mileage averages 31-33 for normal commuting, I got down to 24, but that was towing a thousand pound camper, car fully loaded, with A/C on, doing 75 mph. I expect to own this until it dies, so I don't care about resale. Usual gripes about cupholders, lightweight plastic in the door panels. Roof rack is rugged, no problem with canoes or ladders or furniture.

I bought this car new in 2000 and have since driven it 140,000. It could not have been a better car to own. The gas mileage is great for my situation (a 60 mile round trip to work each day) and I have done nothing but routine maintenance. I do keep the oil changed every 3000 miles, but other than a few belts and tires, it has been maintenance free.

I reviewed this car right after i bought it when i was in love with it. After a year and a half of ownership, i have realized the good and bad of this car. Replaced alternator, transmission at around 56,000 miles. Constant power window problems. Have had engine light issues for the last 5 months. My car was a flood car, but that doesn't explain issues like interior door handles snapping without warning. Bottom line: If you only have 13,000 to spend, Elantra is a good choice. If you can afford better, definitely get something else. I intend on moving up to a Camry or Accord soon.

If Hyundai made an AWD car instead of the larger SUVs I'd go out and buy one in a heartbeat!

I purchased my car in 1999 and have 76000 miles on it at the current time. The main reason why I purchased the elantra was because of the warranty. this car has plenty of pep and the handling is awesome. The only problem I had with this car was the radiator upper hose was leaking, the dealer replaced the upper and lower hose at no cost.

I have a 2000 Elantra with about 60000 miles on it so far and it has worked out great. It's a decent little car which could be considered phenomenal for the price. The only problems I've had were with the power windows which have all needed repairs at some point. It doesn't compare with the pricer automobiles and it wasn't designed to. bottom line, if it fits your budget, you should definitely go test one out. Personally, I like the pre-2k1 body style though as opposed to the new ones.
