Good Deal and Great Reliability
I purchase my car with 100 K miles on it. Now it has 215 K on it and it is still going strong. I am looking for another vehicle right now and possibly going to purchase another Hyundai. It has been super reliable and has only needed general maintainence.
My Little Hootie Hyundai
I got my 1999 Hyundai Elantra with 52,000 miles (and some change) on it and I have NEVER had a problem with it. I got it almost 2 years ago and I plan on running it until it won't run anymore! It has fantastic handling in the snow (front wheel drive) and great gas mileage. It was a great graduation gift from my grandmother and I recommend it for anyone. It's such a reliable car and I'm so glad that it was (and still is) my first car!

Enjoying this car after 11 years
I bought this car when Hyundai just started giving their 100,000 mile warranty after having some bad reviews previously. My choice was between a Honda Civic, which I had before and the Hyundai Elantra wagon which was 2000 less in price with only a 3 year warranty. I took a chance and bought the Hyundai. (both choices were manual shift which I always drive). I made the right choice and have been very happy with this car. I do all short trips, no highway driving. I just had to replace the clutch at 45,000. My first big expense. It now drives like a new car. very peppy! All other repairs have been normal wear and tear. Oil changes only $10 at dealership. I'm happy!
GREAT CAR - CAN'T BEAT IT FOR THE $$!
My husband bought me my little red wagon (same as in the photo actually!) in Aug. of 1999. Parts that we have replaced were all past the normal wear mark and we have done NO major repairs at approx. 36000 miles. Great warranty, roadside assistance, great price. Actually recommended the car to my mom and she purchased a 2001 Elantra sedan-what more can I say?? Next - I want the Sonata!
Sorry to see it go...
This vehicle has been in our family since the beginning; I got it as a gift with 130,000 miles on it. Unbelievably reliable car; average in comfort...this is not the car for long road trips (your back WILL hurt!) Suspension was average, but you don't buy this car for style and "fun factor" - it's an inexpensive, reliable about town automobile. Timing belt broke like clockwork every 80,000 miles. It was still running strong this week when I sold it for $1,100 and 191,849 miles on it. Gas mileage was exceptional at 28/35. Didn't want to sell but couldn't keep showing up at client meetings with a rusty car. I was so impressed with this car that I replaced it with a 2008 Hyundai Elantra.
Evaluation of 1999 Hyundai Elantra Wagon
I like the body, the roominess, and the convenient style of the hatchback. It gets around and it is easy to maneuver. It gets good gas mileage and is easy to park because of the size. I think it is undervalued in the blue book.
Faster than you think!
I purchased this car because it had the most bang for the buck. It has 140 horse power stock and now after a few modifications my car will give a $19k Honda SI, a run for the money. I have 120,000 miles on my car and it still running strong. I never had any problems with the car.
Great car for the money
I've owned this car now for over 3 years and have put 80,000 miles on it. To be honest, I'm impressed. It's needed a few minor repairs along the way (most of which were covered under warranty) but nothing terribly serious. One minor complaint is the brakes...they seem to be prone to serious rotor warping. I just recently went out and bought a set of new rotors, but had to return to the dealer because no auto parts stores had the correct ones. Still...not bad. We've taken this car up in the mountains and it handles well and is impressive in the turns. I should have gotten a 5 speed, but oh well...there's always next time.
Best Car Ever
I recommend this car to anyone that is looking for something reliable but stylish. This car is great for long distance road trip and for short inner city driving. I purchased this car brand new and with over 120k miles it is still running great. I am looking to upgrade my Hyundai Elantra to a Sonata. But this car is well worth it for anyone single, married, with or without children.
I love it!
I've had this car for just over 2 years and no problems at all-- I love it! I had intended to buy a used Jetta, but this car stole my heart and I still love to drive it. It's definitely a lot of car for the price. 5 adults fit comfortably, with plenty of room for cargo as well.
Since I drive it, I know it.
I bought my Hyundai in January of 1999. At the time I was looking for an inexpensive car with something more to offer than most cars of this price range were offering. I have never been sorry I chose the Hyundai. The style of the car is so much better than the current models. It is reliable and has offered many miles of fun driving. I would suggest this car to anyone.
Fun to drive
The transmissioj failed at 69,000 miles. It was replaced by the 1000,000 mile warranty.
what a sweethart
The only problems I have ever had with this car is the total lack of quality of the dealer mechanics that worked on it for warranty claims. They caused more damage than they fixed. I'll stick to doing my own repairs its safer and less expensive. As a matter of fact this car has over 110,000 miles, driven 70 miles round trip each day and I just replaced the front disc pads not because they were worn out but the backer pads rusted out from the road salt in Maine.I LOVE this car and just bought my wife a 2007 Sonata. Great car. Great warranty, fun to drive, and reliable. no major problems to date. 10 years later.
The Next Best Thing to a Civic
This car was a very good buy got it for 2700 fully loaded sunroof, cd player, check this even had an viper security system. I had no Major problem out of this car just regular stuff brakes, oil, tune up car has over 190,000 plus on it car still get me to and from work. A very good car is u keep it up. Tip please have u timing chain and water pump replaced at 100k
A Great Little Car for the Money!!
I really like my Elantra! It looks great for a 4 door car.Sporty and fun to drive. It is also very dependable.
Elantra experience
I bought the Elantra because I needed an inexpensive car quickly. The price was right and you certainly can't beat the warranty. It is a great value. That being said, I'm at the dealership FAR too regularly. The 'check engine' light is often on, but they never find a problem. The A/C works sporadically. The temperature gauge registers 'hot' though the technicians claim it is not running hot. They've advised me not to operate the A/C above setting 2 (4 settings available) as the motor burns out. The motor in mine has been replaced twice (6700 miles and 24000 miles). The radiator blew up and had to be replaced at 14000 miles.
all the bang a lot less buck!
I have a 99 GL and this is a great car that i can rely on. I picked it up new for under $11,000 and it is as comfortable as my brothers 98 Honda Civic not to mention the Hyundai is faster. I will definetly buy a new Hyundai when this car wears out.
No Complaints
ABought this car 7/99 new for less than $12K. I should have bought the GLS with the rear wiper, but am very satisfied w/the car. Turned 90k miles this week and now need new brake pads (2nd pair and rotors were never cut). Never did the timing belt yet - waiting for 100K. Did have 1 occurence of the check engine light - my brother filled the car w/gas and "topped it off" so it messed up the sensor. I would definitely buy another Hyundai - can't beat the warranty and the space for the $$$.
My Personal Opinion- for what it's worth
I bought my car used for a few reasons: 1) It was affordable 2) It looks nice 3) It was comfortable 4) I liked the features. I have had no mechanical problems at all. I change to oil as required. At which time all belts, hoses, etc. are checked. I've haven't had any problems with anything. I take care of her.......she takes care of me!!! Yes, my car is a 'she'. Overall, she's a great car and as a single mom who can't afford any extra expenses, this car is perfect!!!
Love my first car!!!
I bought this car used with only 8,700 miles on it in 2001. Since then I have had only good things to say. It has been more reliable than my mother's new Chevy Trailblazer and my brother's Jeep Grand Charokee. It goes great in the snow and I get very good gas mileage. I love this car. It is just the right size for me. My relative bought a 2001 Accent and what a great little car too. After driving hers I get in mine and realize mine is so much quieter and nicer. I have had no major problems with my car. Love it. Love it. Love it. Way to go Hyundai.
I like it!
I bought my hyundai as a used vehicle. It had 43,ooo miles ..I think it was a salesmen's care... it now has almost 100,000 miles... I have driven this car several times from pa to s.c .. gas milage ranged 36miles/gal.. In the next year i probably will be buying a new vehicle..I feel strongly that I will be considering another Hyundai...
My Excellent Car
I love my car. It is the first "New" car that I have bought and if I plan on buying a new one I will probably buy a new Elantra or upgrade to another Hyundai. They are wonderful cars to drive and so reliable!!!
Great Car
I bought this car with about 40,000 miles on it. Shortly after, the check engine light came on, and I had to get the catalytic converter replaced. I was able to do it in Utah, as the Las Vegas dealer I went to didn't give me the time of day. Other than that, it has been great. Love the peppy engine and my aftermarket CD player sounds good with the speakers.
Awesome 1st car!
This was my first car that I ever owned. I can remember seeing it sitting in the used car lot while going to high school. I loved the way it looked and at the time(2001) it was only 2 years old(99). After graduating I went and looked at it. Has 8,000 miles on it and I bought it. Family was hesitant since it was a Hyundai. I didn't car. It was a fantastic car to go back and forth to school every week. Round trip was 400 miles a week. Traded it on a new 04 Elantra that was left over in 05. The 99 NEVER gave me a problem and was bullet proof. As was my 04 Elantra until I traded it for a 06 Sonata that was new. Still drive the 06 Sonata. Love Hyundais!
Great Car
I've had a great experience with this car.
Sell before warenty ends
Gas mileage getting worse as car ages, expensive to repair, rubber and plastic parts already crumbling from the heat here in Phoenix. Had to replace front strut mounts @ 60k due to rubber rot. Very poor quality materials. Lots of rattles, paint on front bumper oxidizing badly from sun despite lots of wax. Car aging very fast. Good college/school car but get a real car fast afterwords. Once bumper to bumper warranty expires the depreciation of value and cost of repairs make car a very bad choice. Long wait for parts for major repairs such as bodywork.
All about the Warranty, Extend to 100K
It is all about the Warranty, Extend to 100K miles, Hyundai has probably put $5,000 in warranty work in our vehicle. It is now at 95,000 and running just fine. Power windows break all the time and some serious transmission and engine problems happened. Thank goodness for the warranty. I paid for the car brand new and have paid for oil changes and the 30K, 60K and 90K services and the car keeps running. There is an inconvenience cost associated with a Hyundai trying to claim on all the problems. So without the warranty, the vehicle is a big risk.
Economical & Reliable
Bought this car new. Engine has been great and with over 100,000 miles, still runs like it is new. Never broke down. Recently replaced spark plug wires and battery, but no other problems with engine. Always kept up with scheduled maintenance. Came with Michelin tires and lasted 55,000 miles. Replaced brakes for the first time at 80,000. Spent very little out of pocket. Did get extended warranty to 100,000 and did use it to replace the retractors on the windows. GOOD CAR FOR THE PRICE!
Good Car for the Money!
I have had this car for a few years now and have had no major problems with it.
Tremendous value, remarkable performance
Purchased new in May 1999. Have over 80000 miles on it. For less than $13k, this a very capable car for commuters and first-time drivers. Nicely designed. Very reliable, no major problems or repairs. Good convenience and safety features overall, but compared to later models some drivers will want more. This car DOES require scheduled maintenance, like tuneups, oil changes, fluids, etc., in order to operate efficiently. Gas mileage has steadily decreased since when new. Stock stereo has fair sound quality. Road noise is loud for passengers and driver alike. Engine noise is quite loud at more than 50% throttle. OK for long trips. Overall, this car has held up pretty well over the past 6 years
Wow
I used this car for my 100 mile trip to Boston and surrounding area. I'm a lead foot and always beat this poor car every day. Now it has 250,000 miles and it still runs great! I have had allot of transmission problems. Other than that, all it's needed is a wheel bearing and an altornator. If you are a courier, buy this car! It's perfect for zipping arround the city, and it's more powerfull than I expected.
Overall Dependable Car
This has been a dependable car. I bought this car at the 30,000 mile range. It's no good for comfort on long road trips. Seat's are uncomfortable if sitting in for more than a 1/2 hour or so. Overall for the price you can't beat it. It has over 80,000 on it now and not ready for brakes yet. Just normal oil and maintenance keeps you running in one of these Elantras.
Great car for the money
I bought this car in 1999 and we love it! It is still fun to drive after 6 years and we have had no major issues after 70,000 miles. All we do is change the oil. Still have original brakes, just changed the tires once. Great options, and the upgraded stereo system is great. Overall, we could not have asked for more from this vehicle.
Replacement clutches are NO GOOD!!
My son bought this 99 Elantra in 12/03 during his last yr of high school. It had about 23k miles on it, now has almost 90k. Usual maintenance, tires, brakes once and thought it would get him through college. Wrong! Replaced the clutch 5/06 and it had to be replaced again 1/07 - less than 8 months later, no change in driving habits or mileage. Now we can't unload this thing to save our lives and the blasted clutch is acting up again... Oh, and the inside door handles aren't the best either. They just come off in your hand - no "man- handling" necessary. Have replaced 3 of those.
Broke down on me a lot!
I can never trust this car. Every morning I get in it...I wonder if I'm going to make it to work.
Very reliable little car
I bought my Elantra in June 2000 and 65,000 miles later have nothing but good things to say about it. I have yet to need to bring the car to the mechanic other than for scheduled maintenance...which is a very welcome change after my last car, a 92 Thunderbird which had a tendancy to blow head gaskets. The only complaint was with the factory stereo, but with the low price tag on the car(paid under $11,000) you have plenty left over to head to the electronics store and get a top notch aftermaket stereo installed. All in all, a great, reliable car for the money.
Fun to start with, but just wait...
The cruise control was broken when I bought it. They fixed it under warranty after installing a new cruise switch and new cruise computer, after 3 trips to the dealer. List of things repaired/replaced so far (outside of normal wear and tear): front rotors resurfaced twice, replaced once, throttle position sensor, idle speed actuator motor, drivers side power window motor/track, exhaust manifold, fuel pressure regulator, both front interior door handles, rearview mirror, windshield, driver side window trim/gasket. The engine now idles so roughly that the steering wheel shakes violently...dealer claims there are no problems.
My Review
This is a nice vehicle. I purchased it recently and I'm very impressed
Best Car I ever had
This car has been the best car for the money. It is roomie, inexpensive, and reliable. For the money, it cannot be beat.
Call previous owners first...
Fun, sporty-looking car, but not very good acceleration. Transmission slippage recall on some. Had to have tranmission replaced at 35000 miles. Check engine light has been on most of the time since. Fuel pressure sensor replaced, now service is checking some other sensors. Or might be faulty wiring. Fuel injection timer replaced shortly before 35000, of which service said is common in this model. All repairs have been covered by 60000 mile warranty. Blinker handle too short, no reminder bell if you leave your lights on, and the exterior trim on a door fell off. Plastic pieces inside that you use to close the doors come out easily.

Bad Investment
I bought this car used and had nothing but problems with it from the start. It had 62K on it, and about every 3 months something would be going wrong with it. From hub bearings, to cv joints, cheap brakes & electrical problems, this car was a hassle to own. I did all the standard maintenence, fluid/filter changes, belts etc. It still ran terrible. Then at 90k the transmission started to give out, and I finally traded it in with 115k on it. Very sad that a car I kept so well maintained couldn't even make it to 100k before breaking down. There's a reason they sell you the 100k warranty, with cheap cars like this you will definitely need it. What do you expect for under $10,000?
Nightmare on Wheels
I bought this car almost 3yrs ago for 2500 with 62k mi. From the start it had a bad hub bearing, a few months later the ignition coil went, i've changed brakes at least 2 or 3 times and changed the spark plugs more times than i can count. Every time i turned around something else was going wrong. I did all the maint fluid changes etc and still at 90k the trans started to go. it has 117k on it now and is on its last leg. Dont buy this car, it was my 2nd elantra and i should have learned the first time. I will give it credit for still running after all its problems but hyundai's are cheap for a reason there's a reason why you get the 100k warranty, don't expect more than that out of it.
