I have had my car for five years. When i bought it new it had only 6 miles on it, it now has 210,000. I have done my own maintenance on it. I have replaced the battery twice, the tires three times. The sensor valve stems are fragile and break very easily and are expensive to replace. My current issues are a vibration sensor that sometimes comes on and then goes off without me having to do anything. there is an electrical issue that I am scheduled to have looked at. The car lurches then the RPM gauge goes flat. The other gauges continue to work. The cruise control switch is acting up, but other than that it has been a good little car. My complaint would be the road noise while driving and the radio only going up to 32. You see when you can't hear the radio because of road noise so you turn it up, you are out of luck once you reach maximum and still can't really hear. Also, car companies, not including a spare is really a bad idea. Yea it saves them money, but if you have a blow out in the middle of no-where that inflator that they include will not work, so again you are out of luck. Incidentally, to buy a spare from the dealer was over $200 so i went to discount tire bought a full-sized universal rim and tire for $70. The best mileage I ever got was 56 hwy, (I even took a picture of it since no one would believe me) now after so many miles I get around 37 combined.I fear that hyundai should focus on the electrical more and resolve the issues there and include a full sized spare tire or at least a donut instead of the blow up kit. But i have complete faith in this little gem, after all 210000 miles in five years with no major breakdowns is good for any car company and testifies to the fact that if you perform regular preventive maintenance the vehicle should last. I would buy another Hyundai. P.S. I am still driving this car to work everyday (1 hr to and 1 hr home) . I recently made a long trip in this car and had the brakes checked since I had never replaced them. The Brake shop was surprised, they told me I still had 60% of my brake shoes and didn't need them changed out yet. i could have done the job myself, but felt the need to have a professional look at things before the trip. It has exceeded my expectations.

Unbelievably Great MPG!

I've had this for 90 days/4,250 m. I researched small hatchbacks for weeks. MPG, crash test results, price, value of included features were all criteria. The kicker is the 136 hp in the 1.6 liter engine. All of the competitors had less output yet still could not beat the Accent's rated MPG or price. (OK, if you blow a few more Ks for a turbo Sonic, or Maza 3 or Fiesta you might get more ponies under the hood, but why)? I drive the 6 sp stick prudently--using cruise on the highway and staying within 7 mph of posted limits. Invariably I get 42 to 44 mpg. My city driving consistently gives 38 to 39 mpg. Phenomenal! FYI, I'm consciously coasting whenever feasible and avoiding jack-rabbit starts.

I've had 3 Toyotas, and have had a new 2013 Hyundai Accent Hatchback for over 2 months. I simply love it. Quality, reliability and styling match or exceed my previous cars. Interior is very quiet, car is a blast to drive, and the styling is awesome. I like small cars because of their handling and ease of parking. I could afford a mid or full-size car, but why would I want one? This car fits what I need and want, and is tops in its class on virtually all measures. You cannot go wrong buying one. You'll love it.

I purchased this vehicle as a replacement for an '04 Hyundai Accent sedan (other review on Edmunds for that vehicle). I specifically wanted a used Hyundai Accent hatchback because the value<->price is tremendously in your favor and I needed a car that could haul stuff. Specifically, I play a 30" marching bass drum which would never fit in the old '04 (backseat or trunk). In this hatchback, it fits thru the rear passenger door and the rear hatch. Outstanding! The engine is the same as before but with 130hp, achieved by using Direct Injection and re-mapping the camshaft to produce power at a higher rpm. It also has a manual shift mode which allows to put it in the proper gear for hilly neighborhoods at certain acceleration rpm's. Going up a hill from a stop light with the a/c on and 3 adults totaling about 650-700lbs, it is sluggish (so turn off the a/c, flip it to manual shift mode, and get the revs up). As noted by others, visibility thru the rear is somewhat reduced but not excessively so, adjust your side mirrors and you should be OK. Overall, cabin ergonomics are not bad and driver seating is comfortable but get out and stretch every once in awhile on a road trip. Since I do my own maintenance, oil changes, air filters, cabin filters, and brake pad changes are extremely simple to do and easy to get to. Same for the spark plugs and wires. Issues: Battery; both my Hyundai vehicles always seem to get green crud on the battery posts. Doesn't happen to any other vehicles I own. Wire brush them every 6 months. No spare tire; as someone else pointed out this is completely unacceptable. In fact, we experienced a sidewall cut from a sharp metal edge; instantly deflated. Forget it Hyundai, your tire sealant and air pump ain't gonna fix that. And the tire shop right next to where it happened wouldn't sell us anything but an overpriced set of tires (good thing I keep spares at the house). I located a practically new correct size donut at the junkyard for $20, fits right into the spare tire well. Ride; leaves much to be desired but there are caveats. First, they have 14" and 16" wheels. Ours is a sport model and came with 195/50-16 tires. These are so low-profile you can feel it going over a speed bump, even at low speed and especially in the back seat. I upgraded to 205/50-16 which was barely better. I later located a set of new 15" wheels/tires on Craigslist for cheap. That NOTICEABLY improved the ride quality with 195/60-15. I like the look of the 16" wheels but if you constantly have to deal with speed bumps, pot holes, or crappy roads, it pretty much becomes not worth it. Stick with the 14s. Conclusion: Maybe I should have gotten an Elantra GT hatchback but they are only slightly larger and the $$<->cost ratio isn't nearly as good. We've had the car almost 6 yrs now. Next year my daughter gets a beginners drivers license. This will be a great vehicle for her to have; not too much power, sporty looking, fuel efficient, full of airbags, easily maneuverable.

Great Car, Fun to drive (SE)

My wife and I were looking for a commuter care (90% city/10% highway). With stop lights every mile to half-mile we are averaging 28 to 29mpg (w/o AC). This breaks even with my 06’ Civic (5-speed manual). As I am use to driving a manual, I do find that the automatic transmission could be more responsive and that the car shifts up a gear a little too early (to improve fuel economy). For example, this is annoying when traffic goes from 35-25-35: Civic (3rd-3rd-3rd) / Accent (4th-3rd-4th). While the 6-speed automatic has shorter gear ratios, I still feel like it is shifting too early and this causes the RPMs to spike and the car to pull forward more eagerly than anticipated.

Great Vehicle with 1 real issue

I love my new 2013 Accent, it drives very nicely, though I prefer not to use the ECO button as suggested by the dealer, it losses too much power and reaction. MPG I am avereging 28-30 overall. It appears that the MPH indicator is way off since I have kept track of every mile and fuel fillup, When I show 30 miles to empty I can only add just over 9 gallons? the vehicle has 11 gallon tank? so really instead of reading 30 miles till empty it should show 80-90? After going below 30 the reading blanks out. Another major gripe is the lack of a spare tire and would you believe it no dealer or third party currently carries one? So get a real flat and your going to regret it. I added autostart

I had an idea of what kind of car I had wanted. I had been researching hatchbacks for 6-months already. A friend of mine bought the 2012 accent so I was already familiar with the car. The moment I walked on the lot a Hyundai of Escondido the sales man walked me to the selection they had. All I had to do was pick the color. Im a musician so I needed a car with plenty of trunk space that is easily accessible. The entire team at Esco Hyundai was above and beyond helpful with teaching me all the features and sat with me until I understood it all.

Car ran great for 8 years and 72k miles, then the engine failed! I would of stayed with Hyundai if I was better taken care of with their 10 year warranty. It took 3 weeks for them to decide to fix it or not. So I was left without a vehicle for that time! I had to make mention of my " Next course of Action" for them to act! Needless to say I'm switching to Honda!!!

First 2013 review! 44mpg highway @ 80mph

We test drove the Honda Fit and Kia Soul but neither got anywhere near the mpg of the Accent. I have a 40mi all-highway daily commute so I wanted something that was economical and comfortable. I typically do around 75-80 and use cruise control often. The Fit was buzzy on the highway (4000rpm) and materials quality was extremely cheap. The Kia was VERY quiet and comfortable on the highway but we just didn't need that much space. My wife has a 2010 Insight which is essentially a wagon, so for road trips or large loads we take her car. The Accent's 6th gear helps immensely with gas mileage. With cruise control set to 80mph and eco mode ON, I am averaging 44mpg hwy at a quiet 2500rpm. Very happy

Bought new and how has 89k miles. No repairs neeed other than maintanence items. Only flaw so far is periodic dashboard squeak on right-hand side after 10 years. This is our third Hyundai (2002 Elantra, 2012 Accent SE, and 2013 Accent GS). Only real downside is lousy resale value vs. Toyota or Honda but we buy them new and run them until they hit 180k to 200k miles. Update June 2024: now at 102k miles with no issues. Replaced front struts and water pump. For whatever reason new struts eliminated dashboard squeak. Hoping for 150k miles.

fun to drive, but falls apart!

Been driving this 10 years now. Too low to the ground for my liking. I prefer my suv over this one. But this is a reliable car to zip around town, and it looks cute on the outside. Front seats are acceptable for comfort. Back seats uncomfortable. Great stuff: Fantastic handling and acceleration! Meh stuff: The brakes are sensitive. Bad stuff: The handle has broken off, and the sunvisor has come off and costs over $100 to replace. The hatchback tonneau cover is a pain in the A... I just ripped it out. The hatchback falls on my head every time I'm putting groceries into the back. Very painful. The accent does awful in the snow. I'm used to AWD vehicles.

A 2013 SE black Accent hatchback has changed my perception of the Hyundai brand,... I've owned nothing but yotas and Hondas civics and rollas and I was sure this was going to feel cheap and be lackluster in it's performance but let me tell you that it's incredible little vehicle with a very nice interior standard satellite radio and with 138 hp and it's light weight , paired with a smooth fast shifting 6 speed and beautiful 16 alloy wheels sport tuned steering is very well done with great road feel and feedback with a nice weighted feel as the speeds go up... The acceleration from a stop will surprise you , very peppy...
