This is a fun car to drive

I love this car. It may not carry but 365 pounds but it is fun to drive. The battery pack was the biggest drawback with this vehicle but time has made prices come down so I am not as concerned about the price of the a battery pack now. My IMA light has been on for the past 5 years and I am still driving it around. More and more people are knowledgeable about hybrid vehicle. I have watched many videos on the internet which show how to remove battery packs.

Purchased the Insight in 2004 with slight damage and 32,000 miles from a private seller. After repairs, enjoy driving and average 60 MPG with no operational or repair problems. I love driving this car and passing the gas pumps. Originally used hi-test, then found that it ran just fine on regular. Drove to Florida & back from NH with no problems and averaged 61 MPH. Have replaced brake pads & tires. Friends wonder why I love this car after driving BMW's for 15 years...let them wonder !!!!!

Insight on my Insight

My Insight was the 1st one in New England and was a demo for the first yr. I bought it off the first real owner. The 165 tires were dangerous and crappy on a dry summer's day, so I went to 175 and have sum/win changes on wheels. I have added HHO generator which keeps the mpg at 60, but adds about 5-10 more horsepower, which saves my hybrid battery usage and keeps her charged for hills, etc. She handles very well and is a pleasure to drive. I do not drive her in the snow because at 1700 lbs I shutter to think of a sliding car hitting me. The 2 seats make it impossible to legally carry a child and not pract. for my golden. Honda put in a new hybrid batt. for $0 at 88K and will to 160K.

You know about the high mileage - 64MPG lifetime average in my case. What you may not know is that this is a zippy little car and quite fun to drive. While it has "just" 100 foot-pounds of torque, its aluminum frame and body weighs next to nothing so it blows away the Prius.

$11.00 per month on Gas

I think I was one of the first to buy this car, I spent $11 per month on gas, one fill up. The only problem was people was always coming up to me asking about it. My top MPG was a 230 mile trip in which I got 93 miles per gallon. You won't get a speeding ticket with this car but you will save alot of money on gas, I would buy another one in a heartbeat. It is a great little car. I absolutely love it.

I love this car! We have averaged 62 mpg over the past 8 years, and it's been very reliable. The only downfall is dealing with Honda dealerships for purchase and maintenance. They are scam artists - outrageously expensive, not knowledgeable, and terrible customer service.

As you probably know Honda did not make many Insights so I was unable to locate one locally and had to purchase one from another state and shipped home. The car has performed as expected which means giving up a few creature comforts such as ride quality and a little more road noise and gaining incredible mileage. If you drive this car like any other you can easily obtain the EPA estimates of 60 mpg. However, applying the hypermiling techniques you can easily achieve 80, 90 and yes, 100 MPG. I am averaging over 800 miles between fill ups of my 10 gallon gas tank. For ultimate MPG you need the 5 speed because the manual achieves better mileage than the auto due to operation of lean burn.

This car has given me a new perspective on vehicles in general. While I've always tended to make prudent purchases to fit my lifestyle, this one's been the best so far. While the car handles like a bat-outta-hell, gets mileage worthy of boasting, and has been comfortable and reliable for me, I realize it's not for everyone, especially those with children. I own a retina-fryingly green Insight, and find that it does have what designers refer to as 'neck-break appeal'. Mileage exceeds that of most hybrids, 54-79 mpg, depending on conditions & driving. Every friend I have shops, hunts & dreams about that better car to own in his/her future. I feel no need to do so. I'm thrilled with this car!

I bought my Insight al little over a year ago, used. It is fun to drive, has held up very well and averages about 62 MPG. I can't believe Honda is stopping production. Instead they should be advertising the Insight as the answer to the world's oil crisis. Anyone that has to commute long distances should own one.

While this is my wife's car I do most of the driving. She drives for high mpg I drive to see how many people I can surprise by going faster than others. Needless to say our average mpg for 40000 miles is 48. I read in some of the reviews people calling it a good handling car. Not even close, it's just a point and shoot vehicle. Gears 1, 2 & 3 for acceleration (3rd is good for 80 mph and the batteries are being charged!) 4th & 5th are strictly cruising gears, no torque at all. I had to buy a fastener for the rear spat...$17.00 for a screw!! Must be made from gold.

I bought on of the first insights produced. I purchased because of its unique feature, but now because of high gas prices it is a very practical. I drive it to work and city over 5O miles each way on a regular basis. It handles well in all types of road conditions. My lifetime mileage is 57.6 mpg. My best trip mileage is 76+ miles per gallon with air conditioning on. I like the way it accelerates in traffic and zips along on the highway at 70 miles per our. I have not had one problem with the car. The only thing I have done is replaced the tires and the car battery(not the battery pack), and changed the oil on a regular basis. This Honda product is awesome.

The idea to combine an ecology friendly electric powered vehicle with the convenience of gasoline power (fill up on any corner) is futuristic & long overdue. Last fall I bought one for my teen daughter. She drives it non-stop & loves the great gas mileage: 50-60 mpg. Whenever I catch it at home, it's my car of choice to drive. I love zippin' around town & into tight parking places. Each driver in the family brags on who's getting the best mpg, each trying to top the other. It's a blast to drive, with fun instrumentation! We've put 12K miles on it in 6 months and the only problem we've had it in the shop for was a battery harness recall and suggested periodic maintenance.

The Insight was a great concept from Honda, but unfortunatly dose not do anything for me. I hate the fact I can not get more then 1 passanger in my car. Or the fact in a minor crosswind my car feels like it is going to be blown off the road. Or the fact that when going up hill out of town, I feel it will never make the top. I can barly put three bags of groceries in back without filling the back up. And finaly no machanic (besides honda) will take a look at the think to even attempt a repair, so I am forced to go to honda to have anything replaced.

I have driven this car over 30,000 miles and find it faster then all the magazines claimed it to be.The car is capable of standing starts much quicker than PT Cruiser,Mazda Miata,Dodge Durango,Porsche boxter,Cadillac STS,and many others too numerous to mention.Once you learn to sycronize the clutch, shift and gas pedal for best performance you get a car that out performs all the previous data that I have read. I have climbed steephills at over 90mph with pedal left over.I have embaressed Porsche owners as I have left them at traffic lights and out maneuvered them in traffic.

I have been Driving my Honda Insight for almost a year now. Bought it used at 15K, now at 30K I average about 55 mpg as I am a rather aggressive driver and traffic here in the Seattle area can be quite "parking lot'ish". The Insight is quite capable of achieving 70 mpg if you are willing to drive the speed limit and keep an eco-minded feather light foot. When talking performance the Insight employs a number of advanced technologies, from the "Integrated Motor Assist" and regen breaking, to the aluminum chassis, and the lowest drag coefficient (.25) of any mass production car.

When I test drove the Insight it handled great with a lot of pep, and thought this was pretty sharp. I wasn't looking to by a car for myself. Then my dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I drove it home, and got over 90mpg. Since then I average between 55 & 90mpg, depending on how much in a hurry I'm in. Definatly the best car I've ever owned.

Have owned my Insight for 4 years with no problems. It's a blast to drive with great lower gears acceleration and overdrive higher gears for quiet extremely low RPM high speed cruising. It's still tight as a drum and wind noise is negligible due to its best production car aerodymanics. Sky high gas prices are of no concern with a lifetime average of 52mpg driving it like any other car, without concern for gas mileage. And it still gets thumbs up almost daily.

Excellent in all respects. Just over 8700 miles. 63.4 MPG overall combined city and highway mileage. Can make easy 74 MPG on commute at sea level at 62 MPH; less in the mountains. 0-60 acceleration not great, but quick off the line. As reliable as any Honda or Toyota. Turns Heads! Fun to drive, sports car handling. Can run with the BMWs on I5 using the Electric Motor Boost as passing gear (staying in 5th) and still get 58 MPG.

No I don't have to plug it in. This vehicle has been incredibly reliable, like every other Honda I have owned. The color looks as fresh as if it was brand new. Everything is easy about this car, washing it, checking and changing the oil, and driving. The trips tho the gas station are the best attribute. 10 gallons of regular gas gets 500 miles of driving. Can't beat that.

bought the car used when our "winter rat" died. was looking for basic transportation, cheap. dealer had nothing, but told me to look around. the insight jumped out, bright red, futuristic styling, two seater. i am a big man, over 6 foot 225#, i sat in it, i fit. dealer jumped me, i played coy. found that it had sat one year total between the two pervious owners trading it in becaus it was a two seater. it has been great, i got it used with 45,000 miles for $9,000. get mid 70 mph on trip, 55 in winter with snow tires and 65 in summer. ok in winter driving, and does not rust. i would buy again. dont fret about payload, my wife and i drive together, 400# payload and we still can get groceries

I never considered the insight until a technology savvy person convinced me to test drive it. (I was not keen on the side skirts) Once I did I loved it and traded my Audi A6 in on the spot. Best decision I ever made! My lifestyle was very welcoming to a Honda Insight. I have been excited to drive it every day for the past 2.5 years. There is always a smug look on my face when I drive through the gas station past all the SUV owners and walk inside, just to get a soda! The thing is most people don't drive what they need. All seem to own a vehicle that could move a whole house if necessary. I say, buy the insight for the rest of the days you are not on the move to save $$$

Bought my little beastie with 36,000 on it, have put another 6000 on it. I've averaged, mixed city and highway, 70.6 MPG, with an occasional 80 MPG on the highway. Comfortable, reasonable performance, perfect car for my needs. It's STRANGE to go 700 plus miles on 10 gallons of gas! Plenty of luggage space, I routinely put my road or my mountain bike in the back, and have even put two bikes in (a bit of a trick, had to take one pedal off).

I purchased a used 2000 Insight after researching this car for months on several forums inclduing insightcentral.net and I love it. It is excellent at its intended purpose- incredible MPG. I would also consider it a driver's car. If you drive correctly you will be rewarded but drive wrong and you will be punished. My mileage varies from 70mpg to 90+mpg but a few users have only seen 45+mpg. This car is also a compromise. You give up many things for that ultimate MPG. Due to its design, there is more road noise and the suspension leaves a little to be desired among others. But compromise in a few areas and you will be driving and enjoying one of the greenest cars on the planet.

Performance is great (keep in mind that it weighs =1800 lbs), it's a blast to drive, phenomenal mileage (I averaged 87 mpg on a 250 mile trip once), etc. I've spent roughly $1100 in gas over 50k miles the 2 years I've had the Insight. I never realized how much attention this car would receive from all walks and places of life. I cannot say enough positive things about this car. I'll keep it until I die.

My 2000 Honda Insight is a joy to drive. It is surprisingly fast, considering its main draw is fuel economy & low emissions. The aerodynamic fairing is close to the ground, and consequently I had an adverse encounter with curbing--the plastic & rubber spoilers are fairly fragile but easily repaired. I have had absolutely no other problems. When driving in daylight, turning on the headlights dims the instrument panel too much, even in cloudy weather & no cruise control is available. Otherwise, it's a perfect little car & a great piece of engineering design.

I did have to replace a tire @ 22,000 miles (hit a piece of metal in the road). I decided to replace it's mate on the other side. The two I did not replace are still on the road and I can not see any tread ware on them! I am averaging 58.5 mpg over the life of the car and have gotten as much as 82 mpg out of a tank of gas. Would buy this car again in a heartbeat!

Recently I noticed that the power cells were discharging more frequently and with less of a stress on them. After contacting my dealer and finding out that new batteries were unavail. and when they were they would be re-manuf & cost $3-5000, I traded the car. The value after 3 years on a trade is only $8-9000. So, If you can sell it privately, do so. Otherwise pay it off and keep it until the batteries need replacing and then hope that they are available. As of Nov. 2002 they were not. A new vehicle priced at 21k only worth 9k three model years later, (with normal mileage) says alot about the manufacturer's and dealer's opinion of the vehicle.

Since moving to Maui, the Insight has been the perfect vehicle. Regular gasoline at $2/gallon - and driving about 700 miles a month for pleasure, the car is delivering 72-mpg! We don't use the A/C - it doesn't get hot in Maui - which helps the mileage a lot. We've renovated our home, and all materials except major appliances were transported with this vehicle! I left a superb Mercedes behind, and miss only the sound system.

The Overview basically sums it up... You just can't beat it for the money, used with aftermarket 5 yr 100K warranty for $7400. I did have a few slightly costly repairs from the previous owners minor accident, but it is well worth it in the long run. Everone should have their own Insight at least for a daily driver. I'm sure the costs would drop dramatically if enough people were buying them for commutes.

I have been driving my Insight for close to 5 years. Overall, it has performed very well-even when the battery pack unexpectedly failed recently (it was 6 years old), I had no problems getting back on the road in about 2 weeks, completely covered by Honda's warranty. I've averaged over 54 mpg, mostly in short-trip, city driving in Michigan, where the cold winters reduce mileage quite a bit. However in the summer, I easily average 60 mpg or more.

(50,000+ mile review) 2 Seat Family Car Limitation: First, install an on/off switch for the passenger side airbag. Next, the Insight can be used when 2 or fewer occupants are to be transported. Our 33 mpg family car used otherwise. The 2 seat limitation never keeps anyone from going anywhere. Mileage: When I drive carefully, the Insight rewards me with 70+ mpg. When I drive otherwise, I average 60-65 mpg. Handling, Driveability: Not an out and out sports car, it does have a sporty, nimble feel. Fit and Finish: It's a Honda... Reliability: It's a Honda...

Have owned car less than 6 months & it has already saved me over $300 in fuel expenses. As gas prices continue to soar, the savings margin also grows. On daily commute of over 56 miles one way I have been averaging between 80 & 85 mpg & have twice attained 91 mpg (!). My record for a shorter 17 mile trip is 100 mpg. This is a truly awesome vehicle. Of course, achieving these kind of figures requires adopting new, more fuel efficient driving habits. But even when in a hurry, one can easily get 50-60 mpg without even thinking. So, depending on driving conditions and locale you can get 600-900 miles of driving from a single tank. How do you like that, OPEC ?!!!

I love my Insight. I play it like a video game, trying to get the "high score" of mileage. I also hate stopping to get gas. It's really wonderful to be able to drive from San Francisco to San Diego on less than one tank of gas. Because I play the game, I drive differently than I used to. I try not to speed up or slow down suddenly. My lifetime mileage is at 58 miles per gallon. I've found that where I drive makes the difference: hills, short trips and bad traffic are the things that reduce the mileage. Also the tires must be inflated for good mileage. I love the controls. I thought I wouldn't like the digital speedo, but I do. I found that the car is plenty big.

I've owned this car for 1 1/2 years and I'm very happy with it. The gas mileage is the best! I get about 58 mph driving around town. The steering wheel is small & sporty, the car handles great around corners. The most common questions I'm asked are, "Do you have to charge it?" (NO) and "Does it go fast?" (YES). This car is a real conversation piece. People ask me about it everywhere I go.

I sold Honda's in Ontario in 2000 & I was assigned a new 2000 Insight as my 'Demo'. I drove it for 5 months before it sold. I've never driven a car that rec'd so much attention from other drivers & pedestrians. It got 100 MPG at 50 MPH & one night on Ont's Hwy 401 I had it up to 180 Km/Hr in a rural area. The man who bought it in 2000 still owns it in 2023. He replaced the original battery pack in 2020 with a new & improved battery pack @ $6K (CDN). No rust as it's an aluminum body & no engine problems as it's a Honda. It's the only 2000 Insight in our city of 75,000. BTW, that car sold for $27K (CDN) in 2000 & it cost Honda $35K to build them back then as they were totally new tech.

Consdiering these cars came out almost 25 years ago, they never fail to amaze. I've driven one now for 14 years, and its fuel economy is still tops in the gasoline engine market, I have no issues in crosswinds as article intimates, handly is crisp and precise and grip levels are high with it lo rolling resistance Bridgestone RE-92s due to low weight. Also donn't agree that it does not go fast on Interstates- ran across the desolate Mohave desert stretch for 2 hours at 90mph- top speed about 103-108 mph depending on wind direction. People reqularly ogle the car and ask when they became availble for sale by Honda!

This vehicle certainly delivers as advertised. I do not care so much about fuel costs as environmental impact and with an average of 69 MPGs and the lowest emissions of any gasoline vehicle on the planet, I feel this vehicle treads lightly. There is plenty of storage space (I carry an entire soccer team's gear to matches weekly) and the acceleration is what is needs to be for highway driving. The handling is confortable and the gauges informative as you can adjust your driving habits to maximize the car's abilities to conserve. This is my 8th car, and by far my absolute favorite.
