2020 Honda Fit LX 4dr Hatchback (1.5L 4cyl 6M)
60 of 61 people found this review helpful

I bought the 2020 Honda Fit LX 6 speed. It is very satisfying to drive and very easy to live with. 6 speed is pretty easy to drive. Gets 40+ mpg no problem just driving normally (keeping speed at 65 and under). It's a bit slow under 3000 rpm but I don't mind at all. It's definitely a driver's car, if driving is a chore for you, you would be better off with an automatic Hyundai. It has a mild go-cart vibe to it where you have to work a little bit to drive it, but it's very engaging and entertaining if that's what you like. The steering is not too soft or too stiff, the gas and brake pedals do exactly what you want, nothing more and nothing less. Definitely more of a city car than a highway cruiser. The civic is awesome on the highway, but these are right at home in town or on a rural backroad. The shape of the car makes it very space efficient. The backseat is small, but not too small, definitely usable. With the seats folded, you have class leading space, and don't forget the magic seat for odd shaped items like bicycles. My ONLY complaint has to do with 5th and 6th gear. 5th gear is practically useless because it is basically the same as 6th. At 60 mph, 5th is 3200 rpm and 6th is 2900 rpm. You're basically better off skipping 5th and shifting from 4th to 6th and from 6th to 4th. They did this to keep the transmission as cheap and compact as possible, but honestly I would be happier if they just omitted 5th entirely and make a 5 speed where 5th is the same as the current 6th gear. The only time you'll need 5th is from 30-40 mph when 6th is too tall and you need just that extra little bit of torque. You seriously can't tell the difference between 5th and 6th when shifting, and good luck making a smooth 5-6 shift. The gears are so close you have to shift extremely quickly to avoid the rpm increasing. Just a little nit-pick, but it still gets amazing gas mileage despite the high revs. VTEC does a good job of making these cars efficient at higher revs anyway, which defeats the point of having ridiculous overdrives. If Honda would do something about this issue, I would have bought a fit probably 2 years ago, but there's really nothing to expect them to do. I did my part in saving the manuals. I'll definitely be joy-riding this even when I have nowhere to go per-se. Update (August 2020): No issues in over 2000 miles. I ran over a screw so I had to patch a tire, but other than that, it has been reliable. Driving without A/C and minimal stop and go has yielded impressive summer MPG numbers, I'm seeing 45-51 driving with a light foot and sticking to the speed limit. Driving with A/C or going excessively fast on the highway will cause the MPG to drop drastically. This car has 6 speeds yet still lacks a highway gear, so cruising RPM will always be high. It's nice not having to downshift, but I would prefer a taller 6th to get even better MPG. over 80% of my miles are done while traveling under 45 MPH, so this is a more of an annoyance than a concern, although I would recommend going with the automatic or a different vehicle altogether if you drive mostly highway miles. This 6 speed is awesome at urban speeds and much stronger than the CVT for mild off road use and for climbing steep hills. Also, the A/C is not especially cold. It's adequate for Alaska's mild summers, but I doubt it would suffice in the extreme southern heat. Direct injection motors can sometimes be slow to heat up in winter, but I will update again after winter to see how that goes. UPDATE (February 2021): The heater takes a while to put out strong heat, but it is adequate for Alaska's winter and still much better than other Direct Injection engines. Still rock solid reliable 4000 miles later. Winter kills MPG, but still good. No complaints, and really happy with my purchase.

Fits in my garage!

Even at the entry level trim the Fit has a lot of features that I didn't expect like the cruise control, keyless entry, digital readouts for gas mileage and auto headlight control. The storage has three options: The regular configuration with the back seats up is the equivalent of a good sized sedan trunk, With the rear seats folded up there's room behind the front seats for a couple of large suitcases plus you still have the regular hatch area. With the rear seat backs fold flat the whole hatch area is multiplies by 2X+ The ride is busy but unlike the old Element you don't stop to check the wheels. The engine noise is noticeable but I like the sound as I rev up to highway speed. Acceleration is what one should expect in the little guy. If you are old enough the remember the first Hondas in America, you'll love this throwback to the '60's.

There’s no equal to a great Fit!

Wade Pepper, 11/19/2020
2020 Honda Fit EX 4dr Hatchback (1.5L 4cyl CVT)

A week after a young kid hit my 2020 Hyundai Accent at 25mph and totaled it, I bought a 2020 Honda FIT EX. After 10 minutes I thanked the universe for that kid! The FIT is better than the accent in every possible way. Features, comfort, safety, drivability, handling, performance, fit and finish, and over all experience. It’s not even close. Don’t get me wrong the accent was a capable and good little car with just a little better gas mileage but nowhere near the fun. The overall price financed was less than any of the competitors would offer for a similarly equipped car. Only a few small minor complaints and one very irritating complaint. A HUGE THUMBS DOWN 👎🏻 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 To the person that made the decision to not offer a manual transmission on the EX model. Absurd! Just because we want a manual, we shouldn’t have to sacrifice a sunroof, or the safety of the ACC and LKAS. Be careful! This car eats stuff! There’s a little cubby hole under the seats that’s very hard to get to. Lighters, vape pens, and other small objects can disappear and might not be seen again. But honestly overall you cannot get a better equipped car for the price!

Not as good as the 2017

Allison, 07/30/2020
2020 Honda Fit LX 4dr Hatchback (1.5L 4cyl CVT)

I'm used to workhorses. I used to drive manual 4WD Subaru wagons in Alaska, mountainous northern California, and off-road in the desert of Arizona. After a number of years away, I ended up with the worst used Subaru ever and stuck 100 miles from home and having to drive back and forth to help care for my elderly parents, I ended up leasing a 2017 Honda Fit. It was glorious. In three years, not one problem. Cons: road noise and the Clearcoat scratches off REALLY easily. It isn't supposed to have the power to gun it on the highway, but it did for me, if necessary. It has a much less deep storage space in back than my old wagons and yet I was able to bring home a 7 foot Christmas tree last year. I used it as a working car in a semi-rural area, picking up old fence posts, PVC pipes, and more, and it acted like a clown car - tiny but can fit a huge amount in the back. Looked for another less expensive used car but all had reviews that hated the CVT transmission made by JATCO. Honda makes its own CVT transmission so it doesn't have the same terrible reputation. I took it back yesterday and leased the same model in a 2020. Same storage space and same configurations so I'm thrilled! But already not as happy with the 2020 in the first 24 hours. Driving was the same - decent power when I needed it and to be honest, it looks exactly the same as the 2017 except for the grille and lights. I thought I got into the 2017 by mistake. Nothing inside had changed. But Honda went cheap with the new one. 2020 has worse road noise (was that even possible?), cheap speakers, terribly grainy back-up camera, cheap windshield wiper posts that look like they're going to snap off as they hop across the windshield the second it's a little drier (it was rainy yesterday so I dealt with this all afternoon). I can't wait to see what else Honda skimped on in the 2020, but that's my initial impression. Probably just as good as the 2017 for performance, but I'm a little worried about all these cheap parts.

Just bought a FIT 2 days ago. What sold me on this car was the seat, which is comfortable, a little higher than most sedans, and gives perfect lumbar support for me, a 6 footer. I also really like the visibility and the practical space in the back (though the trunk is a bit tight for my golf gear).

The Fit is What the Old Civic Used to Be!

TBJ, 02/19/2021

Today's Honda Fit is totally the modern version of what the old Civic hatchback used to be back in the 1970s. I ended up buying a 2020 LX in Agean Blue. It's totally practical, has a nice little buzzy engine, zips in & out of traffic and sips gas. This car really reflects Honda's original automotive roots; it's very evident when you drive it. It's too bad that it's being discontinued in the U.S. It should really have a 'Civic' badge on the rear hatch instead of 'Fit'.

The 2020 Honda Fit Sport has gained spunk since my experience of owning a 2010 Honda Fit Sport. Several areas were lightened with material change but I see no negative effect on the positive experience of owning a Honda and especially this Honda Fit Sport. It moves with less effort and feels wonderful to drive. It looks great and compliments back that opinion. So glad I made the change.

I was looking for a dependable, safe, drive-around-town car and my research showed that it FIT the bill. I also liked the price. If you drive in snow a great deal, you may have an issue since it is only front wheel drive. I also think it underwhelms for style points.

The least reliable car I’ve EVER owned

We bought it brand new from Honda in 2020. As of today “July 2024” the car has seen MANY repairs at only 78k miles. Here’s all I can remember. 13k miles. Car was shifting really hard. Found out it had NO FLUID in the transmission. dealership said it was fine and just topped off the fluid. Apparently, they forgot to add transmission fluid at the factory when they built the car 24k Had a warning light come on that we had to have service. Ended up needing catalytic converter replaced, but was covered under warranty. 30k Power steering went out 35k Vehicle was shifting really hard again had to take it to Dealer and they did some service to it. Not sure what exactly exactly they did, but it seemed to work. 40k The screen stopped working. The touchscreen stopped working. Had to take it to the dealer and they fixed it. 45k Wheel bearing went out 51k Transmission went out on the car. Honda refused to fix it! 60k car needed some sensor 80k every light on the dash is on. I mean, this thing is lit up like a Christmas tree.

I liked the Honda Fit for its headroom in front, the back seats folding down flat, and the visibility was an extra plus. Lower cost of maintaining and great gas mileage. For a subcompact car, it was too pricey. MSRP 17,945 I have yet to get an honest answer about a true original invoice price. Otherwise, I would have purchased one. Fran D.

When accelerating you can head the engine ramp up but then it sounds smooth. I do not remember my 2009 doing that. I like the seats material. I wish the other areas to have a better material to avoid dirt to stick.

Purchased this car new, 126 miles on the odometer (it was the model that dealer used for test drives). YEARS 1 - 2: No problems at all. Compared to many cars in this class, the Fit is quieter and handles better. It also has a decent build quality – much better quality than my 2015 Ford Fiesta (riddled with transmission issues and a leaky roof). YEAR 3 - so far, absolutely nothing has changed. Years 1 - 3 have been trouble free. This is the comparable timeframe where I had my first transmission failure on my 2015 Ford Fiesta. I’m very happy with my Honda Fit and will continue to update, as necessary. No maintenance other than scheduled factory service. YEAR 4 - Car becomes 4 in March. STILL no issues: general upkeep is all that is required. Frankly, I think I want to keep this car until I die, it's been so reliable! Year 5 - see above, add a new set of tires. This is the most reliable car I’ve owned in 40 years!

Reminds me of the Civic of the 90s

2 of 2 people found this review helpful

I know a lot of people who drives this mostly will be city or rural town cruising with it, but it does well enough on highways too. I'm on about 42mpg and I am moving at 65-70mph. I know I could be hitting 45 or higher MPG if I would just drop to 60mph max speed. Buzzy little engine and, and I think many people who are used to larger and slower turning engines, the jump to high RPM may scare them. Remember Honda is originally a motorcycle company and they known about their small and reliable engines, that can handle high RPM, no problem. Don't be afraid if it hits above 4000rpm during urgent passing and the engine starts singing. It's completely fine, the characteristics changes to a zippy little car with easy and quick steering. As the title says, if it would be the 90s, this will still be a Honda Civic and would be called a compact car and not a subcompact car. I have 6000 miles on it so far and yet to have any issues.

Feeling Fit

I love the fact that this vehicle is small yet roomy. Tall for a small car. Able to fit big cargo in the back seat with the seats lifted up. Also can put larger objects in the back with the back seats pulled down. I'm getting 38 mpg. It has around 19 or 20 gallon tank so these days with the high price of gas...not bad on the pocketbook. Sunroof that I love. Display on the right of the console for seeing the road when I turn right. Nice radio. Good A/C but no seat warming or cooling. Not a whole lot of bells and whistles but if you like smaller cars, this one is near to perfect. I really love it! I first bought one while reviewing it in Consumer Reports and seeing it had all green checks all down the line. To me that meant reliable and not having to go to the shop for problems. Which means you have more money to go do your favorite things at your favorite places and feeling fit!

I have always owned bigger cars, trucks and SUV's but with gas prices and inflation, I needed something not just reliable but more fuel efficient. I saw a used 2015 Honda Fit EX and it only had 36,000 miles. It was clean inside and out looking at it so I did my research. I live in northern USA and I was worried about how the car would do with such a small battery and low ground clearance, but I am absolutely impressed with the cars ability to handle snow and ice. Great reliability and was worth fixing the car up as the previous owner just let it sit and used as a track car. I had to replace the starter, alternator, battery, antenna(it can leak), brakes and rotors, but the car was still very reliable and has gotten me from points A, B all the way through Z. Cons: As a subcompact car, it's noisey and I knew it would be, but it's a very noisy car comparable to a Toyota Yaris. Another con is the low ground clearance. Definitely feel every small bump and pothole, very bumpy ride, but smoother than I thought it would be. Definitely don't go over higher speed bumps, it will scrape up. Also, steep short drives with a deep dip, don't even think about it unless you wanna scrape or crack the bumper some. It's definitely not avoidable but the lower the car, the less clearance you're gonna have. Last con: only a 370 CCA 151R battery, though despite that I have been able to start my car in -42° weather while covered in ice. Once the car gets warm, it gets VERY warm and doesn't have a problem for the rest of the day or two. Definitely wanna start your car at least once a day and run it until warm if in subzero temps. Despite the car's subcompact size, it has plenty of room and storage space. I'm 5ft 6in and a heavy set (230lbs) man, and have no problem in the car at all. I can even lay down in the back with the seats down comfortably and still have room. Great vehicle and very impressive for a subcompact category car. Runs better than my last smaller car which was a Kia soul plus, and runs much better than my Chevy Malibu did. Definitely will be sticking with this car. Update (3yrs in) Only other issue, the OEM antenna can leak, get some RTV sealant and a shark fin. The rear passenger door behind the driver side can leak into the car if the plastic lining inside the door starts to wear away, just pop off the door panel (2 screws) and reseal it with some RTV sealant, it works! Other than that, no complaints.

Great car, if you want a blue one you must get auto transmission. Wanted manual in blue; no could do. Ridiculous!

Cheap Junk!

Bought this car used from a dealership at the height of the pandemic. Was way overcharged for this piece of junk. Cheap and feels like driving a golf cart or tin can especially in rain or wind. Very underpowered. I hate it but owe too much and am stuck with it. I can see why Honda stopped making these. The inside and out are cheap and poorly made.
