Great car with an issue

In general, this an economical, versatile and comfortable car. The only issue that I been having since the beginning is its AC. It looks that Honda made a change on the AC for this year, because It keeps breaking down almost every summer. I had this car for 5 summers, and I have change its condenser 3 times already. This is a very expensive part to replace.

The touring is a great little car, for the short time I have had it. The only thing I don't like is with the all touch panel it is not easy to change the volume of the radio without inadvertently changing something else.

I have leased Hondas since 2004 using 3 different dealerships. I was torn between the CRV, Accord Sport, and the Civic EXT. Boy, did I make the right choice. For starters I am 6'4, and for anyone questioning the roominess, don't. There is plenty. This model is a head turner. I have had more people ask me about this car more than any other I've purchased. I look forward to the next 3 years side. And a side note, dealing with Keeler Honda and Adam Dorn was the best car buying experience I have ever had.

Car runs phenomenally, very smooth. Everything about the car is just awesome. Reaction time is on point. Breaking and accelerating is very smooth. I wouldn't say acceleration is fast though. My family also owns a Toyota Camry and sadly the Toyota can accelerate faster. Not to much has happened. The screen has experienced some problems 2 months into me having the car. The screen would turn off and on then freeze on me. When i contacted the dealership that i bought my car from, they were very friendly and willing to replace the screen. Before i got the change to replace it though, it seemed to work completely fine again so i didn't replace it.

Air bags deployed on their own

Taylor B, 04/18/2020

I have a some what low rating because I didn’t even have my car for a year yet and while I was driving literally 6 mph down a residential area my air bags deployed by themselves. I had been receiving recall notices in the mail but when I looked up to see if the trim of my car was on that list it was not. Notified honda about this and they insisted I take it to a dealership to have it inspected. The mechanic told me the reason why my air bags deployed was because I had scratches under the bumper (yea, ok) then later they said there was damage to my subframe which basically is them sweeping the incident under the rug I eventually got a lawyer and sued them for this. Because what if I were on the freeway going 65mph + and this happened?? This kind of scarred me from even getting another Honda to be honest. I eventually got a Mustang after this and I love it.

Old Civics > New Civics

**Please read updates on the bottom* Coming from an old 2003 Civic manual 5 speed, it feels a bit weird to drive the new CVT. It almost feels like the engine has to catch (maybe it is the eco..not sure) as if I am driving manual. So the acceleration feels a bit lumpy sometimes as if the car has to lurch randomly, but very subtly. The electronics are good. I notice a bit of lag from time to time, but other than that - it's a great addition to the car for long commutes. When I bought my car brand new, there was an issue with my trunk. I opened it, and after shutting it closed, it would not stay shut. It would continually pop open on its own and beep twice. I noticed the bottom part of the trunk weather strip was bent and distorted. I forcefully had to shut it in order for it to stay - and be mindful not to use it until I went to the dealer to have it repaired (5 hours total.) 2 hours for diagnosis, then another 3 hours another day for them to replace it :( but I still love my car. Feels fast, fun to drive, and lovely to look at. I wish they put more care into the interior of the seats and console - as once you put your arm down, it leaves white residue so that will definitely wear down quickly over the years. My other issue was I opened my trunk to inspect my car on the first night home and there were razer blades on the top of some parts. I figure that's more the dealerships wrongdoing. They admitted they use it to cut the tape and various parts off and forgotten them there. Nervous that they could've had more that have fallen into the parts of the car...but so far it seems fine. The steering wheel makes a faint click click click noise when you turn it all the way. Not sure what that is - but it does not affect the way it drives. Overall, love the new car. Going to go the extra mile to be careful with the interior because I feel like it will definitely wear down quickly. Everything else is great - feels spacious and plenty of room to get in and out. Trunk space is huge. Love the details on the headlights and tail lights and the storage space in the middle console ! =) Update on my review:. The cloth parts of the interior get white from being worn or having skin on it. Also, the exterior of the doors smudge easily just with fingerprints from touching the door frame. Nothing much else has changed. 2nd Update: (3/16/2020): In comparison to driving my friend's touring civic hatchback, his is smooth, -- my civic is jerky, especially on inclines (hills). My car has died two times completely not even starting. I had to take it to the dealership for: starter. I had to replace it completely - luckily it was under warranty. 2nd issue was probably a recall defect. Not sure but I put my e-brake on, and then after parking car and starting, the e brake kept flashing, the lights all flashed on and off and the car would not start. Eventually no lights were on, the car would not even catch or click when trying to start - completely dead. After 3 jump starts, it finally worked -- but battery may be cheap. I take good care of my car and routinely maintain it. Unfortunate, but I am probably going to sell it because too many issues are arising for it being a fairly new car.

Great drive, some quirks and uncomfortable seats

Yes, Virginia, it's a manual, 07/22/2020
2017 Honda Civic EX-T 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

2017 EX-T, 6 speed manual First, let's get the bad out of the way... The seats are several grades below even other cheap compact cars. They are hard and uncomfortable, period. And after having sat in a few Honda Fits as well, this isn't unique to the civic. I had a 2010 Jetta with seats that were both supportive and comfortable. It doesn't need to be a tradeoff. The infotainment system is slow and fairly frustrating, but not bad once you get used to its quirks. the lack of a volume knob was a terrible oversight (corrected a year later). Mileage computer: a little deceiving, but I'd like to run more tests. The car is quite efficient, but not as much as the computer indicates. I think I'm hitting the EPA numbers though, which is still very good. Center console: Very creative use of the limited space but I think they tried too hard to make it everything to everyone. A decent size coffee cup interferes with your shifting and you're not getting anything from under that cup while the car is moving. A better design would have raised the center panel and offered more storage in front of the shifter so the cupholders could be lowered and out of the way. No compass? Seriously? Seems like a pretty standard item on all cars these days, but Honda left this off. Would also benefit from a rear window wiper, but I'm just being greedy. Engine, shifting, handling? Sweet. The turbo is a nice combination of fun and efficiency and the manual is really fun to put through the paces. The ride is firm but compliant... a few larger bumps will get a tire or two airborne. Braking is great and linear and the handling is really good. Could be a little steadier on the highway though as the slightest movement will alter the cars path. The seats are really the biggest thing keeping this from being an ideal highway cruiser. It's really fun to drive and the EX-T trim, which no longer exists, is a really good value. Fog lights, heated seats (albeit cloth), moonroof, turbo engine, Android Auto/Apple Carplay. Backseat and trunk are both roomy for the class. no complaints with space, but the car sits really low. If you're tall, you might not enjoy getting in and out. and the tires really hum on all but the smoothest roads. Might be quieter than previous Civics, but that doesn't make it quiet.

A/C fails repeatedly - flawed system

Update: Honda did make good on fixing my A/C long out of warranty as they have put a recall on many of the parts that are failing. The next part that they have not recalled yet is the evaporator coil, which is a very expensive fix. I'm hoping mine lasts, or that the failure rate is such that Honda has no choice but to cover this repair as well. I'm not as sour on Honda as I was when I wrote the first review, however I would still avoid the Civic in the future. If you test drive any other Honda (CRV, Accord, etc) you will note that the build quality feels much better than the Civic. -- This is a fine driving car, gets great gas mileage, looks nice and is really a lot of car for the money. Unless you live where it gets hot, which basically includes the entire Earth these days unless you live at the north or south pole. The air conditioning failed at 54k miles, requiring a complete replacement of both the condenser (covered by factory because they were willing to admit it's flawed) and the compressor (not covered by the factory, cost me $1500 in parts and labor). After that, the A/C worked better than when the car was new. Flash forward 30K miles (85K) and it's failing again. Honda is now willing to cover more of the replacement and extended the warranty on some parts to 100K miles, but it really doesn't matter. Let's say I get them to fix it now, it about 30K miles it will probably start failing again, outside of any warranty. The value proposition of buying a Honda is lost on me. I drove SAABs, a BMW, an Audi, and while those had annoying repair bills, I kind of knew that going in. With Honda I assumed I was leaving expensive repairs and frequent dealer visits behind. Not so. I won't every buy another Honda product again. Their handling of this glaring flaw in their vehicle, and their bait and switch service centers make it hard to imagine giving them another dime.

Airbags deployed on me by themselves

Babykay, 01/22/2021

1 of 1 people found this review helpful

I loved this car so much especially when I first purchased it brand new, for a Civic it rode so smooth but later on once I got to like 20k miles I started noticing noise from the highway inside of the cabin and the ride wasn’t really smooth any more. But one day I was driving in a residential area not even going over 15 miles per hour and my car just stopped by itself and the airbags came out by itself! I was terrified cause I didn’t know what happened. Once the airbags came out I guess the accident response unit was triggered and they thought I had a collision when I didn’t. I contacted Honda the very next day and explained to them what happened (this is corporate by the way) and they suggested I take it to the nearest dealership to have my car inspected. The mechanic tried to blame the issue on me hitting a pot hole which was a lie I didn’t hit anything when this happened. I guess he tried to BS me because I am a woman but I know a little something about cars. I’m no fool. I even checked to see if the trim of my Civic was on the recall list because there has been reports of the airbags malfunctioning or whatever, my trim was NOT on the recall list. Basically Honda swept the whole incident under the rug. I should have sued them because what if I were on the freeway going 70 mph and that happened? It could have ended differently. I’m glad I was going under 15 mph when this happened I walked away with a scratch on my forearm from the airbag deploying due to me driving with one hand on the steering wheel. Also, the seats are super uncomfortable if you’re driving for a while. I drove from the bay to LA which is a 5 hour drive depending on which freeway you take, my butt was numb by the time I got to Bakersfield. One thing I can say is that it’s really good on gas I believe on full it has 423 miles until E which is really good, and Maintenance is really affordable. I think I paid $60 for my oil change each time (I didn’t take it to the dealership) if I did take it to the dealership I would have been charged like $150-200. To be honest that little incident with my airbags and how Honda handled it, kind of turned me away from Hondas period because the technology they have in these newer cars aren’t efficient. One last thing, the touch screen radio has issues as well sometimes it would freeze and cause my speakers to make a really weird noise like a long error sound. The speakers are eh, the sound system could be better. When I first got the car I didn’t know it was 4 cylinder (lol!!!) so if you like going fast like me or like some horsepower this car is not for you, even in sport mode it felt like I was still going slow and it drove so funny and weird I felt like I was messing up my transmission. I remember one time I tried to beat the yellow light my accelerating and the car really didn’t go anywhere LMAO. After my civic ended up getting totaled, I ended up getting a 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T which I LOVE.

New Civic Touring

What a great vehicle! This Civic replaces an older 2005 Civic Sedan that was totaled in a wreck. A superior vehicle in every respect that mattered to me. I looked at many other makes and models of a similar class (Chevrolet, Kia, Mazda, Nissan, Toyota and Hyundai) and while they are all fine vehicles, I kept returning to the Civic. No regrets...at all.

Better than I expected

No maintenance issues with the car so far; we have 700 miles on the car. The turbo engine and CVT combination is a *great* bit of engineering - superior low-end torque *and* great mileage. There is a tiny bit of turbo lag, but for daily commuting and long distance trips it's a non-issue. We test drove a Mazda3 Grand Touring before the Civic and that engine had to be flogged to get the same acceleration. And unlike my friend's 2.5i Subaru Outback, this engine/CVT does not annoy me with constant RPM droning. The CVT seems to find the right RPM for the moment. Unlike my 2006 Highlander which has horrible down-shift lag when passing other cars, this car "downshifts" *right now*. The car handles well, not as good as a 2017 GTI, but definitely better than the other compact cars I've owned (2000 Accord, 2004 Corolla, 2010 Corolla) and tested. Cornering turn-in is much better than expected for a front-wheel-drive car. The driver seat is one of the best fits ever for me and I'm six feet tall. On the other hand, the passenger seat sits too low in the car for both me and my wife. The entertainment system took a while to figure out and is a bit quirky. The user interface could be better. Interior fit and finish is great. Overall great car. One of our best car buys ever.

Automatic LX Sedan

Ashton, 08/18/2021
updated 02/18/2022
2017 Honda Civic LX 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl CVT)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

First off, this is the second car that I've ever had, but the first that was entirely my own. I was lucky enough to use my dad's 1998 BMW M3 as my daily driver before this, so hopefully that adds some credibility to some of the things I'm going to say about this car in terms of the "fun" factor. I got my used 2017 Honda Civic LX for my 18th birthday. It had 30,000 miles on it when we originally got it. Currently, I've had it for roughly a year and 10,000 miles. In this time, if I have any complaints, I would say that having to use the keys to open the trunk every time is annoying at points. The trunk doesn't have a button to open it on it's own. Not much more to it. Another thing that has been less than exceptional has to be the tires that were on it. There were a few times where the car would understeer with even the slightest amount of pressure applied to the gas. However, it was easy enough to handle regardless, and the car never felt out of control. The slides were predictable as so minimal that I contemplated leaving this out of the cons paragraph. Those two things were the only issues I had in the first year of having this car. Reliability has been amazing. I've had one emergency light pop up onto the dash the whole time I've had this car. The tire pressure light came on after a sudden drop in temperature later in the day. There is nothing to note about the car's reliability, just like it should be. Now, in terms of the fun factor of this car, I first should bring up again that I originally drove my dad's 1998 BMW M3. I went from driving a classic sports car to driving a basic compact sedan. Hell, the Civic name is probably one of the first models of car to come up if you asked someone to name a model of car. With this in mind it should've been a massive let down, right? I should've been clamoring to get back into the sports car, right? Well, I can say that, for me at least, my civic has been a fun car. I would be crazy and a liar if I said that the civic is a more visceral drive than the M3, but I've enjoyed driving the little Japanese car a lot. Hondas in general enjoy being driven in high revs, and putting the hammer down every time I get onto the highway is very enjoyable. You can hear the revs rise and the car rumble with excitement and then look down to see that you're finally reaching the speed limit. This model epitomizes the saying that it is more fun to drive slow cars fast than fast cars slow. And not only is hitting the accelerator fun, but the balance and handling of this car are remarkable. Even with the less than sporty tires, the cornering speed of this car is amazing and it can be fun to take some corners at a slightly more aggressive speed. The interior of the car is rather bland, but at least for me, that's what I was paying for. The speakers work well and the seats are comfy. The screen is simple but it does everything I've needed as a high schooler and now college student. I haven't thought once that I wished the dash had something that it didn't. And despite the car's small size, there is a surprising amount of space in the trunk and cabin. I've been able to fit multiple of my 6'0"+ friends with absolutely no complaints, and the trunk has been able to fit multiple large baseball bags at a single time with ease. The fuel efficiency is something that is perfect for a high school or college budget. As I approach living on my own, hundreds of miles away from my family, being able to run with a fuel efficiency closer to 40 than 30 is amazing. In conclusion, the 10th gen civic is a perfect first car. For a parent, it's relatively cheap to buy, and it keeps costs low beyond that. You don't have to spend extra money on gas, repairs, etc. For a student, it gets the job done. It gets you where you need to be and can even be fun in the occasions where you want to spice up the daily drive a bit. Even if you aren't a student but maybe just want a cost effective option or something that'll get you from point A to point B and never let you down, this car will do it for you. Update: We’ll over 40,000 miles with this car now and very little has changed. Still reliable, still enjoyable. I moved with this thing to college and being able to use this thing whenever and know that it’ll work well is a blessing as a busy college student. I have so many roommates and classmates who struggle with having to get gas so often or reliability issues. I wrote the original review as a high school student. I’m thrilled to say that as a college student, I’m even more thankful for this car.

Never buying a Honda ever again

Nothing just problems since it hit 80k miles. sensor problems almost every time I start the car. I drive to Manhattan from Long Island every day. This car shut off 6 times one morning and in the midtown tunnel then shut off another 9 times on my way home. Honda does not care about your safety or the money you spent on this car. Gas mixes with oil constantly as well and Honda doesn’t care to fix that problem knowing that it’s a huge issue. I’m never buying a Honda ever again. Nothing but trash cars with no responsibility for their faulty workmanship on a pathetic excuse for a car. I seriously hope they become one of the least bought cars because they seriously suck. My wife used to have a crv and it barley made it to 100k miles. They don’t want a car that lasts you just something appealing to the eye for you to dump money into. It’s a lemon car don’t buy this worthless garbage.

Biggest thing I wanted was something fun to drive and this car checks that box well. More comfortable for me , better headroom, better visibility out the from . Engine a little stronger but not by a lot . Excellent mpg on highway 44 , a little worse in town.

I bought this for my 16 y.o.. she loves it. I bought it for the safety options and the 5 star safety rating. Second reason is the fuel mileage. I didn't want her asking everyday for gas money. It can get over 37mpg in the city if driven correctly. Teaching her to take her time ....well that's another obstacle. Third reason is the manufacturer. I pride my self on not ever buying a foreign car. I drive a Ford f350 diesel. I respect our country and countrymen. To go and buy a Honda was tough. But after looking at where this car was manufactured and assembled I changed my mind. I have neighbors who actually had their hands on this car before it was givin a birth certificate....lol. This civic ex seems to be a safe, economical and stylish ride that should take her thru collage and beyond.

I only driven the twice since I bought the car(1 wk). When I saw the car able to open the trunk from inside the car, I was happy. Right now, I am very disappointed because I found out I couldn't open the trunk with the key! So inconvenient!

for those who don't care about interior options this is it BUT they are all basic in fact theres a lot of things missing on this car rear cup holder, charging port, etc seats are a lot worst then the impala i used to drive i mean why not power seats?? why not LED headlight REMOTE START! why not a bigger touch screen radio? why stupid hub caps on a 20grand car!!! on this HONDA civic lx gone more RETRO the FUTURE like. if you decide to lease and want to buy it at the end and don't mind customizing it then its good to go other wise choose the better ACCORDS!

got a lease on the blue civic lx sedan nice car now much to look at in the interior why dont they ever match the overhead with the same color not black and white. moving on, for a base model a 5' radio is too small!! but the sound is pretty good, seats why not power seats? could have been better with leather my butt hurts driving 130 mile trip, road noise on the high way get ear plugs or turn up the raidio headlights should have been LEDS not halogen. cruise control very slow accelerating i mean you have to floor it and then set your desire speed but once you slow down and wanna go up on speed make sure you have some popcorns along the way. NO REMOTE START! COME ON!! no cupholders on the back seat or folding tray whos idea was for cups or bottles to go on doors? a rear power outlet would have been nice. suspension is cool!! small stering wheel very sporty and good grip and last the engine vibrates a little thats odd for a new car VERY GOOD GAS SAVER $25 fills the tank. SO overall i like the car but so may things missing it doesnt seem to be worth $20 grand

I forgot how much fun it was to drive a manual transmission. It handles and drives beautifully. I averaged 47 mpg (according to the trip computer) both ways on a recent trip. The keyless entry and start it's really nice. The electronic parking brake does take some getting used to though.

Very powerful with turbo engine. Great gas mileage (average over 40), roomy and comfortable with excellent handling and ride. Sharp design. I was surprised that with all the advanced electronics it can't give you readout of tire pressure. I replaced the mediocre OEM Firestone tires with Vredestein Quadtrac tires which are truly all weather and just a pleasure in all respects. Honda Link remains an on and off proposition but is great when it works. I gave the vehicle over to Honda for a day and they finally fixed the dashboard compass issue at no cost to me. Overall this has been a trouble free car which I continue to enjoy and recommend.

I bought the car brand new. I loved it starting out and it was great to me starting out. At Just over 36,000 miles my wheel bearings went out on the vehicle. I baby my vehicles and dont drive crazy at all. Honda did cover it under the drivetrain warranty. That was terrible but at just over 38,000 miles my A/C went out in the vehicle which again Honda replaced for free. At 41,000 miles the A/C went out once again. These vehicles seem to fall apart after the end of the warranty ends which was not a good experience. Overall the car gets great gas mileage and its a great car tech wise as well but definitely has it’s issues

Best car of the segment (better than the new gen)

The 2017 Honda Civic was ahead of its time. When you compare this model to the rivals, it was WAY ahead. this one still feels modern. Solid ride, apple carplay, huge trunk, stylish, comfortable, INCREDIBLY fuel-efficient, and reliable. I want to make a point about the fuel economy on this vehicle, because it is incredible! I don't think I have ever seen such an efficient vehicle that is NOT a hybrid. I'm at 75k miles and no problems at all. I did change the battery twice, but other than that, no problems at all. The interior/exterior is far more stylish and daring than the new one. I rented a new gen for a trip and was very unimpressed by the road noise, interior materials, and look of the car. Overall, this generation of the Civic is the best one, ever.

Key features include the turbocharged engine and the six-speed manual - which is VERY hard to find in a non-stripped car! The interior quality, features, comfort and roominess are amazing. The car replaced a Lincoln MKZ: the tech in the Honda is superior, and the interior room is darned close. Mixed mileage is a bit above 40 mpg. Mostly highway drives are 45! Incredible mix of performance, pep and fuel economy. I looked at Lincolns, VWs, Mercedes, Mazdas, Volvos, etc., but the Honda Civic is the only car that matches the performance I wanted, and room for adults in the back seat... plus it offered a great-shifting six-speed manual! There are a couple of Accord manual options, but they are due to be replaced next year and cannot match the mileage of the new design Civic. Outstanding car; a thrill to drive!

A/C never worked and almost died from the e-break

Serena Marie, 09/07/2020

I loved my civic when I first bought it used last year! It was my favorite car I’ve ever had, until I found out the A/C doesn’t work. It was covered under warranty so I tried getting it fixed 6 times. 6 TIMES! It would be 95° out and I would be sweating in my new car. These new cars have a very unsafe parking break on the center council, a little button you pull upwards. I was driving 75 on the highway last week and my vape slipped under the parking break. I didn’t think anything of it, so I went to reach for my vape and it barely lifted the button. I came to a complete terrifying stop 75-0 in 3 seconds. Almost swerved out of control, but thankfully I kept ahold of the wheel and kept the car facing straight. The car behind me slammed into my rear-end and I’ve never been so close to almost dying before. Will NEVER own a car with that type of e-break again. Exchanged it for a 2016 Honda Accord EX-L V6 yesterday and loving it so far. Be careful with the 2017 Civic. Could’ve killed me because they wanted the car to look sportier.
