I bought a 2017 Honda Civic brand new, and has only driven this car for 4,500 miles from 2017 to 2019. From the beginning this car has a heating and air conditioning problem. In the winter the windows are frosted I have problem seeing outside. I can't see the vehicle at the back of me and also the side of me. In the summer the outside air is cooler than the inside of the car. The car is blowing hot air. Buying a brand new car and had to drive with the windows down is a disgrace. It is a bad investment for me , I regret buying this car. Be careful if you plan to buy one.

Great Ride, But Brakes Don't Do Winter.

Update: The car now has 95,000 miles on it and has been very reliable overall. Apart from the brake issues I initially reported below, the only repair since (outside of further brake pad and rotor replacements) has been rear shock absorbers. The car still rides and handles well. I'm going to miss the silky-smooth manual transmission when I part with the car. Sad it is no longer an option on new Civic sedans. If I could give a 4.5 star rating, I would. Initial review: After decades of owning Toyotas and enjoying their outstanding reliability, I decided to buy a replacement for my '06 Corolla with over 220K miles. I purchased a new '17 base Civic with a manual transmission when that option was discontinued on all but the "Sport" Corolla trim. Frankly, in everything related to drivability the Civic blows the Corolla away, and the Civic gets considerably better mpg's (my wife has a '19 Corolla, so my comparison isn't pulled out of the air). I concur with all of the positive reviews on how driver-friendly the Civic is, and the 6-speed manual is a dream. I was worried that the wider-than-Corolla tires would be a problem in the snow- NOT so! With good snow tires, the car does just fine. Now for the problems. The AC was dead when I first tried to use it. Leaky condenser, covered under warranty. OK, fine, that's what warranties are for. After two winters on snowy and salty upstate NY roads, I started to notice a slight rubbing noise from the rear wheels/brakes. I was due for a scheduled oil change/service at the dealer (I like to use the dealer service when a vehicle is under warranty), so I had them check the brakes. I was brought to the service bay and was shown that the rear brake rotors were delaminated, and told that they needed to be replaced along with the pads, which were worn down to 3mm. I was also told that the front rotors had to be "turned down", but the pads were still good at 6mm. Since the car was still under warranty with 30K on the odometer, I figured the work would be covered under warranty. WRONG! The service rep said Honda doesn't cover wear items. I maintained that this was equipment failure, and that I generally drive forward (front brake pads normally wear much quicker than rears). He agreed, and said that the pads were "stuck in the holders", caused by the salt and grit applied to slippery roads and leading to lubrication failure on the holders, "we see it all the time". He then accused me of not maintaining the brakes per Honda recommendations. I reminded him that I had been bringing the car THERE for all scheduled maintenance- he shrugged his shoulders, and I refused the work. After I got home, I checked the Owners Manual. There was nothing about said brake maintenance for US cars. I happened to check the recommendations for Canadian cars, and Honda did recommend annual brake service for those. I called Honda's Corporate office and was told they back the dealer on this one. Thanks Honda, I bought your car in upstate NY, I should be able to drive it there. I didn't see any advantage to using Honda replacement parts given the poor performance of the originals, and paying the inflated price I was quoted, so I booked my trusty independent mechanic and left the car with him. He called with the bad news- the electronic parking brake on the car can't be released for access without Honda computer codes, which he didn't have and couldn't afford. He cleaned and lubed the front brakes (the pads were stuck in the holders there too), and Honda got the work for the rear brakes (the dealer did take pity and gave me a break on parts, though it was still more than the independent mechanic quoted). I asked the dealer how much the annual brake service (clean and lube the pad holders and sliders) would cost: about an hour's labor, $95. Since I never had that issue with a Toyota (I'd get 80K plus on the fronts and never touch the rears), I'm not happy with Honda. Add the fact that maintenance to prevent the problem is addressed in the Owner's Manual for Canadian cars but ignored for US models leads me to believe that perhaps Canada has stronger consumer protection laws and Honda is deliberately fleecing US owners by selling cars with brakes not suitable for winter road conditions and forcing customers to use their pricey parts and service due to the parking brake computer codes. It's a great car to drive, but I can't say Honda is an honest company to deal with. A shame. Anyway, if you drive your Civic on salty roads, donate to the dealer every spring for a brake service. Or consider another make. Update: The car now has 90,000 miles on it. Apart from the above irksome issues it has been problem-free apart from a broken rear shock absorber (many roads it travels regularly are in terrible condition). The car still handles and rides like new. The manual transmission is so smooth and a pleasure to shift. It’s a shame Honda no longer offers it on the base Civics. Overall, I’m quite happy with the car.

I've always had a Honda, this was my first ZERO miles & NEW NEW car! I have had this car 3 years now. I loved the look and how it drove, my car is my baby!! HOWEVER! FIRST Month-Front bumper popped out of place! It was bizarre, I know no one hit me-paint and body were fine. Rear bumper-the black plastic trim started loosing off. Like wth? Brand new car and already coming undone front to back? First year- we had a bad rain storm and my wipers completely died! Yup, mid drive. Turns out the motor died. More paint chips around the body and parts look as if they weren't sealed right??? Second year- battery died (waaaaaay too soon) The navigation and Apple CarPlay keep freezing and locking up. I use a legit iphone charger and they keep burning out after connecting to car. Sun Roof is starting to make a screeching noise and locking up. Third year- the chrome trim in my interior is chipping badly (Again, I take really good car of my car. Everyone thinks its brand new.) This weekend I went to get oil change & I'm told the AC Clutch & Coil are out & guess what, yeeeees-my warranty is out therefore Honda is asking for $928!!! I have done my research and MANY people are having AC issues and funny how they come up after warranty is out. Many say that the dealers are telling them to prepare to fix again AFTER you give them all that money and "fix" it. I have always rooted for Honda and loved their cars. I've had 3 different ones & years-all used. However, I'm really disappointed at the poor quality they put into this car. It could've been one of the BEST cars out there, TOP quality that lasted over 300k miles. Now, I don't believe mine will unless I keep putting money into it. I've never had so many issues with a used car-this was my first new car & never again. I also HATE going to any Honda dealership. I have been several times to different ones & I feel as if they just don't care to help you out. Save your money because this seems like it is just the beginning of a money pit!! :(

The stock tires and headlights are garbage ! But the rest of the car is amazing I'm 6' 3" and this car has tons of space. It's crash test rating is through the roof, its 0-60 is ~6.2 seconds which is faster than most cars. It's passing ability is awesome with the turbo ! Really fun and peppy car to drive. I test drove the impreza, mazda 3 , and golf , and this car was definitely the most bang for your buck. the only quells are again the stock all - seasons are terrible in the snow, and the headlights aren't very bright. but the daytime running LED's are really pretty. I've gotten so many compliments on the look of this car. If you get this car get the sport package the exhaust sounds awesome at high rpms but still keeps quiet at low speeds and not to mention those 18" wheels are so sexy. I still oogle my car from my window 7 months in. I love this car.

Great car with horrible seats

2017 Honda Civic Touring 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
5 of 6 people found this review helpful

I am a three week owner of a Civic Touring. It is an amazing car to drive. It has great acceleration for its class and is fun to drive. It is a nice looking car with good interiors and really nice dash. It gives great fuel economy and is fun to drive (which is a rare combination). It has cool technology features. It has almost everything that I would want in a car but yet I am rating it only a 3/5 stars. The main reason being the seats. The driver seat is not comfortable for someone short like me with back/neck issues. In my new Civic, my neck hurts really really bad. I tried all kinds of back supports and neck pillows. They help a little but still do feel very uncomfortable because of the forward inclining headrest. In spite of my issues, I would still highly recommend buying this car as it is a very good car. But before you buy this make sure you are happy with the forward inclining seat (which can be an issue for short people).

Mega practical and safe car with surprising quirks

CJ in Orlando, 03/19/2021
2017 Honda Civic EX-L 4dr Hatchback w/Navigation and Honda Sensing (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
3 of 3 people found this review helpful

I've had my hatchback for 3.5 years and over 65k miles, and my overall impression is it's a very reliable and unbelievably practical car with great safety features. I've been mostly up and sometimes down on it for various small annoyances, but it literally saved my life and throughout my ownership has been a rock for reliability. Pros: * Hatch space with the rear seats folded is equivalent to a small truck, really * Fuel economy makes you smile..a lot * Stellar safety for a small car. I walked away with nothing but an adrenaline shot and ringing ears from a completely totaled car (sandwiched from behind by a truck). * Layout of controls is intuitive and functional * Reliability--strong start every time, never a worry * Drivability--good turning circle and agility * Very good driver and passenger space * All interior materials feel/look nice, not cheap * Of course, the overall styling and looks of the car are outstanding Cons: * I wish there was a way to perma-disable the collision avoidance system, but you have to remember to do it each time--and sometimes it won't disable even when stopped/parked. Several times the car put me and others in jeopardy because it slammed on brakes when going around a turning vehicle or when drifting up to accelerating traffic. Person behind you will curse your existence, as you curse the flurry of alarms and peel yourself off the seatbelt saying "go, go, GOOOO!!". * CVT is a huge contributor to economy but while the car is plenty powerful, it takes precious seconds for it to realize you have the pedal on the floor. Never try to cross traffic without lots of room. * Cabin build quality is sketchy. Brand new, the headliner was loose & rattled like a maraca while driving. Other unexpected rattling from tweeter covers, plastic pillar covers, and sun visors--drives you mad. You expect better from an EX. * Info-tainment system. Generally very good until you plug in a phone to charge--then it auto-switches to Android or Apple with no selection. Switch source back to radio and dare to touch a button on your phone, then you're back to listening to texts or phone games or whatever, ugh. Sometimes this happens just with bluetooth--Apple especially takes over your car, and Honda is all too accommodating. * Adaptive cruise control. If you want to follow highway traffic at 8-10 car lengths distance, this function is your friend--and that's at the lowest separation setting. Makes cruise unusable for me. So even though the cons are considerable annoyances at times, you start to predict them and work around them over time. But be warned, they'll send you a dark reminder from time to time. A couple can be avoided by not having the sensing package, which is overrated IMO. Understand I'm trying to balance my review, but I'm giving 4 stars since the cons are mostly manageable and more the fault of the designers/builders than the car itself. For just the cargo space and the fuel economy alone, I'd buy it again. But add styling, reliability, and functionality and I'll actually seek one out...without sensing this time ;)

Majority Upgrade, A Few Issues

Brian, 08/03/2017
2017 Honda Civic Si 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
3 of 3 people found this review helpful

My lease came sure on my 2014 So, and enjoyed the car, so I upgraded to the 2017 version. The engine is noticably more powerful, and the exterior styling has been improved (the car looks a whole lot meaner, in my opinion). I have the same complaints from my 2014, and a couple new ones: STILL AN ISSUE: 1. Cupholder placement. I know drivers that prefer manual are a dying breed, but if you're going to make a manual-only Civic, don't put the cupholders in front of the shifter; 2. Touchscreen. Honda's interface has been upgraded (?) but it's still terrible. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay can only control a piece of the system. The rest has to go through what Honda built. Painful. NEW: Parking Break. Part of the appeal of driving stick is the feeling of greater control over the car. The parking break button takes some of that away; 2. Break Hold. Seemed like an unnecessary, but nice feature for stopping on hills. Actually a huge pain in the ass. If you unbuckle your seatbelt when Break Hold is activated (for example, when grabbing a ticket at the parking garage), the parking break is activated. Very annoying when you're not expecting it.

I remember the days when I’d travel and rent a car and wish my own car was as good. That’s a thing of the past. Now I get back to my and it’s a relief. So many good things about this car it’s impossible to catalog them all. The 540 watt stereo is awesome!! My old Civic Coupe (2009) had a very good premium stereo but this is waaaaay better! The turbo makes this car very quick. I had my doubts about the CVT transmission but it's quite smooth and enjoyable. Purists will tell you they have to have a manual transmission to get the best performance. Pish posh! This car is fantastic without it. Had to wait to get the first blue one in Oregon but well worth the wait. The heated leather seats are great when it's cold and Doublr as a back heater if your back is hurting! My mpg is also a big jump over my previous Civic. A year and a half later I’m still seeing around 35 mpg and I’ve seen it hit 40 mpg when driving all highway miles. I switched to all premium gas since I like the extra kick it gives. What's truly amazing is that I have a much quicker car and it's significantly less expensive to run. An update after owning it for over a year: it’s a joy to drive both in town and on the highway. Did discover that if drive it faster than 80 regularly the mileage will drop and if traveling behind other cars spraying moisture up, the ACC can have trouble seeing through it if it builds up.

Amazing Excellence made by Honda just superior etc

2017 Honda Civic Type R 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

I bought a 2017 Civic Type R Touring and it’s everything that was advertised and promised by automotive experts and by Honda. Out the gate I drove it on a 4 hour ride home and I was in shock of its handling characteristics and blistering speed capabilities! Above all the performance prowess I was unexpectedly blown away by its long distance driving comfort and fatigue removing seats and ergonomics! I did later drive 20 hours to Vegas and back and that proved similar experiences becoming now a regular expectation to take me anywhere and back with no back pains etc. The seats to me are priceless. In the first two weeks I took it for a proper flogging at the Ridge Motorsports park 22 hours from my house in Montana. It took me to the track and back home all in 4 days just add gas! I destroyed everything that was on the track from ford RS to BMW M4’s to 5.0 Mustangs and fully built civics. They just had no answer for how I dominated in the Apex and on 90% of the track from braking to holding 100mph cornering speeds. In stock form this is a no bs racecar built by Honda to be daily driven. That fact alone is mind blowing. All in all I have no regrets I wish I could by 2 more. And I will. I love it 3 years later like its week 1. Go find a car that will thrill you like this for 3 years straight. If you do you have found the right car. I certainly and unequivocally Have done so.

18 Months, >40K Miles, No Problems, Great Drive

Fantastic car, usual Honda reliability. No issues first 45K miles. 6MT and shifts easily. Hugs the road, brakes well, and with the turbo, you feel like you are driving a go-cart, it's so responsive. Routinely get >38-40 MPG, and I don't drive slowly, mainly highway driving. The interior is nice for the price level. The front carpet is thin, the dashboard is predominately plastic, but well put together and no "creaking". The LX model has a basic infotainment system, but Bluetooth reliability has been good. I listen to podcast and audiobooks and the sound system is very good to my ears. The seats are comfortable cloth. They have held up well so far. The vision out the front is excellent. You'll hear people make comments about the 1.5T gas/oil mixing but no one has shown this actually affects performance or reliability. Nice, spacious central console. AC works well and heat's up quickly in the winter. Well placed cup holders. It's a car that makes daily driving fun. What to do I wish for? No heated seats, passenger front seat has no height adjustment, that's all

I've never owned a Honda or thought too much about getting one. My parents had an accord back in the early 80s, and it was fine--just boring. My more recent interactions with hondas carried on that assessment. Then, I saw a 2017 civic, and I really was surprised by how nice it looked. I was surprised, too, by how roomy it felt inside. Even more surprising, I found the turbocharged four-cylinder more than sufficient and even fun to drive. To top it off, I was impressed by the safety equipment. The deal-maker for me was that I could get a new civic touring for less than a 1-2-year-old subaru (legacy or impreza) or a camry, and the resale value looks great. I've driven the car over 8K and had it more than about 8 months so far, and I really have no major complaints. I’ve found the CarPlay feature to be uncooperative ~5% of the time. The car continues to be fun to drive, sporty, and great on gas! With my city driving and the mileage I'm getting, I think this is about as fuel efficient as I'd find a hybrid to be, and I don't have to worry about maintaining two power-sources.

When I first saw the car it was love at first sight. I like the look of the exterior as well as the look and functionality of the interior. I opted for the model with Honda Sensing which is worth the extra money. The only complaint I have is the basic sound system, but I was probably spoiled by my Chevy Sonic which had a rather impressive factory sound system.

The sport in manual is the way to go. Plenty of pickup and fun to drive. The sport model is pretty bare bones but has everything you need! update: had it a year and still love it, no problems at all! I was looking for a car compact enough to fit in my garage with modern safety technologies like adaptive cruise control (coming to a complete stop) and lane keep assist. Went for the EX-T with the sensing package. Wanted the extra oomph, so got the turbo. The higher fuel economy is a plus. The overall buying experience was great. I got an internet quote from Walnut Creek Honda. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. * Likes: Great balance of ride and handling. Looks great on the outside and inside. Sensing package. Roomy front, rear seats, and trunk. Great road and wind noise isolation. Good fuel economy. Android auto. * Dislikes: CVT not good for spirited driving but great for fuel economy. Noisy under acceleration, engine sound in the cabin is not pleasant to hear. Front seats can be more comfortable. Miss the volume knob. The thin cloth fabric looks cheap. Sometimes, I need to plug in the phone twice for Android auto, I think it is because it routes the phone via Bluetooth and audio via the cable. Overall great job, Honda. Thanks for listening to customers and come up with such a nice car for the price.

We got our civic hatchback on a lease due to some aggressive pricing at the time. We picked it over the new Subaru Impreza hatchback, Focus and Mazda 3. I am coming into this car from a 2012 skyactiv Mazda 3 touring sedan. We were looking for a hatchback that could hold an infant seat. The civic has plenty of room for our seat without adjusting the front seat which is great. We liked the interior space of the car and of course the hatchback is a huge plus. The seats almost fold flat and ease of loading junk in and out is good. Acceleration and fuel economy are both great. Ride quality is better than I thought but not as good as the Impreza. Wind and road noise is pretty good, maybe slightly above average but not class leading. Now on to the not so good. Things you may not notice on a test drive. The lack of a volume knob bothers me way more than I thought. This thing is also super hard to clean on the outside leaves and little bits get down in all the cracks and creases on the rear end. When I wash my car I have to get that junk out or it would bother me to no end. The interior is not much better the material of the seat and armrest gets dirty fast and all the spots in the overly busy dash hold dirt that can be a pain to get out. The seats are not comfortable for tall people on long drives. I am 6' tall 190lbs with a big build(broad shoulders/chest) the bolstering on the upper part of the seat puts pressure on my shoulders and the lumbar support is just a bit off. After about 30 minutes I am ready to get out and stretch. I can do hours at a time in our Outback or my work truck no problem. Its somehow manages to be quick without being fun. The mazda 3 seems to be the bench mark for fun to drive in this class and to me the civic is just lacking something in the feel even compared to now ancient Ford Focus. Yes its fast, yes it stays planted, yes it can make some fun noises but the cvt while quite good and effective at day to day driving saps all fun out of it. I can't help but feel with a manual this car would be a blast. It also lacks the feed back and just that explainable fun factor the mazda has. Overall its not a bad car perhaps its a little overly complex on the design side but if you are on the smaller side and just need something to get you to and from work this may be your car. For me I am dumping it when the lease is up and looking for something more my size.

No problems at all. Have gotten 50.3 mpg on a highway road trip with Econ and cruise. Peppy performance; fun to drive. Planning to keep car 150-200,000 miles. Performing maintenance per “minder “ should allow that goal with minimum surprises as I’m not hard on a car. Not the easiest car for me to get into but very comfortable and a “secure” feeling once inside. Have gotten great comments about its looks—great looks and “flashy “ red ‼️🚘

Best of 2016...not bad 2017

When Civic hit the road in 2016, it was the best compact car on the market with its unique turbo engine and fantastic handling. Now that it's 2017, Civic has serious competition. The 17 Elantra handles almost as well and has a bunch smarter, prettier, comfortable interior with technology (including blind spot monitoring) available on all trims rather than select trims like the Civic. The 17 Corolla now comes standard with forward collision technology thats only available on Civics for an extra 1,000 if you're lucky to find on on the lot. If you want the best performing sedan/hatch/coupe, civic wins., but if you want interior quality, look elseware as civic falls behind both toyota and hyundai by a large margin. The seats are some of the most generic quality I've seen in a car ever. The armrests in the center console and door are a spandex/nylon material stretched over plastic--is extremely rough/uncomfortable to the touch and attacts dirt so fast your car will look like you bought it form a used lot within 3 months.

Stay away from any Honda with the 1.5 Turbo

I would only lease this car and give it back before the 36,000 mile warranty and I would not buy it. I repeat do not buy this car only lease it, unless you are getting it without the 1.5 Turbo. The reason being is that somehow gas is getting into the 1.5 Turbo engines oil which is not normal. Honda says there is nothing wrong and refuses to look into the issue because there is no check engine light. However an independent oil lab (Apex Oil Lab) says that there is 5% fuel disillusion and to change the oil before the 5,000 miles which is the mileage I change my cars oil. If you do research this issue is mainly in the CR-V but is also showing in the Civic and Accord with the same engine. In addition the overall quality is not as great as what Honda's are know for they have cheep seat fabric, cheep carpet, and questionable long term reliability. I wish I had never gotten rid of my 20 year old accord that worked flawlessly with over 280,000 miles. However the strong points of the car is the is amazing fuel economy, acceleration/power, styling, and available creature comforts.

Best overall value in compact vehicle, love the handling, response, comfort, appearance of vehicle. Trouble free, kept up on routine maintenance. Civic is very outstanding and great fuel mileage. As of July 2021, my Honda Civic now has 1,119.00 miles. Is in excellent conditions, keep all maintenance with Honda Genuine parts only, including down to wipers inserts, battery, bulbs replacement. No major issues, due to I keep it showroom and mechanical in shape. Best compact vehicle, excellent handling and ride. Update on my 2017 Honda Civic LX 4 Door Sedan 01/19/22, still a great vehicle with now 129,000 miles. No major issues other than staying on top of routine maintenance. Through the whole life span of my vehicle it has only been serviced by my Honda service department and technicians. Everything that has been replaced is only Honda Geniue Quality Parts except for tires which I had replaced with original manufacture tires. Still runs like a new vehicle and excellent value for dependable. Update 1/24/23 : My Honda Civic 2017 is still a great vehicle, going into five years since I purchased in 2017. Keeping and staying up on routine maintenance. Replace one set of tires, one battery etc. Still runs and performs excellent, I’m very satisfied with Honda’s craftsmanship, durable, reliable and dependable service. I have now 160,384 as of 1/24/23. Now past 200,00 as of 7/30/24, second tune up with oil and filter change, air filter, cabin air filter, transmission fluid change, third set of original manufacture tires replaced. Vehicle is the best I have ever owned. Totally satisfied Honda owner.

Bought a 2017 Honda Civic Si back on July 2017. Great commuter car and great on gas. No issues for the first 2 years besides usual oil changes. After the 2 years, brakes are starting to squeal and battery died after 2.5 months. For a new car, would've expected the battery to last longer but have read from other owners that the OE batteries Honda uses are pretty wimpy.

Bought it new in 2017. I only have 7000 miles on it 3 years later. A little tough to get in and out. I'm 6ft 2in tall and 250 lbs and hit my shins once in a while. Drives great and plenty of pep. Only had 1 problem. The a/c was acting funny. Come to find out it was overcharged by a half a pound due to the system being assembled at a different elevation. Sounds weird but true. The a/c assembled and charged on east coast at sea level. I live in high elevation. Other than that it's been great. It also came with 17 inch wheels. UPDATE: Just responding to people about certain issues. I'm pretty tall. 6'2 and 245 lbs. I don't have a problem fitting in. Getting out is another story. If you have the seat dropped down to the floor it can be tough getting out. Oh and to the guy who said driving the car gave him plantar faciatis. Yeah right. Its impossible to get bone spurs when your driving. I'll admit the seats aren't very comfortable at all. But this is a base, plain Jane, no frills model. I paid 18 grand plus taxes and fees. The motor is still a honda and you will get 200k out of it easy. It won't nickel and dime you to death when all the little things that are technology driven start breaking. This car doesn't have that. Your biggest worry will be making sure you change the oil every 4 to 5 thousand miles and make DARN sure you service that CVT transmission every 25 to 30 thousand miles or every 6 years. Whichever comes first. Or else it will prematurely fail. It needs the new fluid more often than your standard automatic transmission. ONLY USE HONDA CVT TRANSMISSION FLUID. Or else the transmission will be damaged. These Honda cars are fluid specific. Just like their power steering systems. Don't use just any cvt fluid. Its Now 12-10-2022. Still have the vehicle. 12000 miles and i still love the car. No major issues at all. Battery replaced after 4 years. June 2023 14500 miles and no problems.

Traded in a Mustang GT stick with 435 hp@12 mpg city! By comparison, the Civic gets outstanding mileage, while handling is great. The engine provides enough get up and go to meet needs of most owners. The Civic Coupe is a very sporty looking vehicle, and the touring model is top of the line with leather seats, navigation and other great features. Shortcomings are no power seats nor lumbar support; Good climate control but Toyota Corolla has system easier to navigate when you want to make a quick adjustment. Trunk is a tad small, and front fenders a bit too low resulting is hitting curbs if not extremely careful. Overall, a great looking car which performs in a very economic way!

We've owned a dozen Toyotas since 1977, but never a Honda. I tested both companies before settling on the Civic, and for me no comparison. The navigation system, miles per gallon, and overall performance was all-Honda. I love this new vehicle, and would recommend it to anyone with enough time to hear my bragging.

Can't Get Much Better For $20k

I have now been leasing this vehicle for a year and it has been a wonderful car. The only downside to the vehicle is I have the larger head-unit in mine and sometimes it can fight my Apple CarPlay. When it works - which is about 95% of the time - it is AMAZING. When it doesn't work, I spend a solid 5-10 minutes restarting my car and rebooting the system over and over to get it to work properly. Other than that the only other downside to her is the interior feels very cheap and plastic. The seats are not the most comfortable either. BUT with the technology offered - Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, SeriusXM, color digital gauge display, remote start, heated seats, auto lights - it is easy to overlook the poor quality and the sometimes difficult radio. Overall, for the price and cost of maintenance (a whopping $70 oil change with tires rotated) it is an excellent daily driver that is easy to fall in love with.

Did a lot of research before buying. This car is an affordable quality car which is a pleasure to drive. The 2017 model is virtually identical to the 2020 model. Great looking car, with lots of safety features, lots of automated convenience features, all on top of a good performance and handling vehicle. I am delighted with my purchase.

I purchased a 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback EX about a month ago, and OMG, I love it! Beautiful design inside and out. Great performance, ride quality, fuel economy, roomy cabin, etc., etc., etc... I also love all the extras and the technology that this car have. Now if we talk about reliability, you know you can NEVER go wrong with Honda, they will literally last forever and the "visits" to the mechanic, pretty much non existence. Extremely happy I got this turbo-good-looking hatch!

Disappointed

So a few months ago I picked up a 2017 Civic Touring sedan as I needed a vehicle to commute approximately ~50 miles each way a day to work. I ended up getting a great deal on the car, but after driving with the car I'm starting to wonder if there was a reason for it. First, I discovered that there is a well-documented Touring subwoofer rattle that developed immediately on my drive home from the dealership (the songs from my Pandora station apparently featured more of a bass than the songs I listened to on the radio during the test drive). Took it to the dealer a few times and the techs there alternated between "We can't hear anything" to "You just can't listen to that type of music" to "That sounds is normal, that song will sound like that in any Touring model". I ended up following a guide to make a wedge covered in electrical tape, which stifled the rattle for most songs. However, even with that the other day a song came on and the smacking/rattle was so loud I thought the rear glass was going to shatter! The first weekend with my car I went to wax/wash it and found a flaw in the factory paint (dirt nib) on the right quarter panel next to the tail light. Took it to the dealer and after about a month of back-and-forth they decided to fix the paint under warranty. Great, I thought. Not so much. The shop they took the car to for the fix was careless during the sanding process and shaved the paint on the edge of the nearby door down to the metal. I found it about a week after picking up the car when I hand-washed it and the paint just flaked off. The shop is denying all responsibility and even had the gall to suggest I somehow managed to open the door so hard and fast that I had somehow managed to shred the paint all the way to the metal. Waiting to hear back from the general manager, but I have a feeling they will dig their heels in on this case. The Honda manager who approved the "repair" hasn't responded to my emails about it, either. While I have been able to mostly hide the damage with touch up paint (and I'm considering buying aftermarket door edge guards to prevent other damage and hide it completely) I'm still furious. Then I have a list of other minor annoyances with the car: 1) Auto-dimming mirror sucks. Doesn't seem to work when there's a car 5-30 feet behind me, which is of course when I expect it to work. 2) Adaptive Cruise Control: always tracks 1 mph off what it's supposed to do. If I set the cruise at 70, the car will go 69. I know it's a small quirk but I find it terribly annoying. 3) Rain sensing wipers: apparently this is another issue other owners have experienced. It fails completely at identifying the proper speed to go and was always either too slow or too fast. 4) Disappointed in overall craftsmanship of the vehicle. When popping the trunk the area directly around the edge of the trunk isn't fully painted and even has areas where paint pooled and dripped. The welding for the doors is low quality and you can see bulges and drips where the metal cooled and was not smoothed out prior to being painted. 6) City MPG is nowhere near 30. Try more like 22-25. All-in-all, very disappointed with this purchase. I'm hoping some of the new or refreshed Toyotas and Mazdas for the 2019 model year will include Apple Carplay because I honestly am considering taking the trade-in loss and dumping this car. I like the way it handles, the peppy engine and the fact that I consistently can get 38 on my highway commutes but this whole experience has soured me to the car, and the whole Honda brand.

I'm no tech phobe, but the controls on this car are not intuitive, difficult to use and I believe actually dangerous. The climate and audio controls are almost all on the touchscreen. You must look at the screen to find the place to touch to make changes. (When driving there's no way to feel that you've made the right selection.) The screen is also too low on the dashboard. It should be placed higher so when you look at the screen, your peripheral vision can still see movement on the road. It's placed so low that my eyes are taken entirely off of the road. There are too many controls on the left side of the steering wheel. I think these could be better located. It is ridiculous that the side view mirrors don't have the flashing lights when the blinkers are turned on. (This feature is pretty common in a lot of other cars and not limited to the high end option packages like Honda has done here.) Instead they've put a camera on the passenger side view mirror that is activated when you put on the right blinker. so instead of looking over your shoulder or to the right, they are encouraging the driver to look down at the touch screen when changing lanes. ( I have found this camera somewhat useful when parallel parking to determine if I'm close enough to the curb). Lastly, if you own an iPhone, the phone must be plugged in to be able to use Apple Carplay features. If my phone isn't plugged in, then I can only access Honda's phone system. I am impressed with the Econo setting. I find no difference in driving performance so I keep it on all of the time...and I like to accelerate quickly on freeways and live in a hilly area. The interior arm rest on the door and top of the center console are made of cloth. Given that these are high-use locations, I'm concerned that the material won't hold up very well over time. 1/2020 update: the front driver's seat squeaks horribly and the front dashboard often rattles.

STAY AWAY(DO NOT BUY) 2017 CIVIC

Dont repeat my mistake, 07/21/2018

First off bought a brand new 2017 Civic with 6 miles on it and was initially satisfied even though these cars are somewhat overpriced. 3 weeks in and 1500 miles later an AC hose and another AC related component literally fell from underneath the dash board while I was driving. Called the dealer who sold me the car and he could care less about me or my issue and simply said "lets play devils advocate if u complain Honda could simply say its how u drive the car and what u use it for that caused these AC components to fall from underneath the dashboard" keep in mind I paid $3048 for a warranty so he says take it to Honda repair....I do they fix it and im on my way. A month later the rear interior carpet starts to come loose from the frame (YouTube this issue other 2016/17 civic owners have the same problem) fast foward 13 months 50,000 miles later the AC stops working. I live in NYC where its only hot for 11 weeks a year so this AC only lasted 1 summer before it crapped out. Again I go to the dealer and in the midst of a week long 100 degree heat wave I have no AC....it takes the dealer 3 WEEKS to finally get the clutch and coil the 2 parts that due to mechanical failure stopped the AC from working. The Honda parts and repair manager of this particular facility simply said BLAME HONDA its not us its HONDA. My first brand new Honda experience was ruined and I will NEVER purchase another car new or used from any Honda dealer again. The only thing impressive about the 2017 Civic is its mpg, other than that your in for a headache with this car. UPDATE 7/23 So 2 years and 2 or 3 ac condenser replacements later that took a total of 2 months in the summer where I couldnt even drive my car I get a letter acknowledging the 2017 Civic has a faulty ac condenser and a lifetime warranty on that particular part. Too little to late I've already lost so much time and money having to pay for rideshares and Honda not wanting to get me a loaner or renter.....AGAIN!!! STAY AWAY FROM THESE CIVICS they take weeks to fix it even if u bought the warranty UPDATE: 6 years later 214,000 miles 3 alternators, 3 batteries, 3 AC compressors, 3 sets of tires, 2 pairs of struts, soon to be 3 rear pairs of rear shocks later my 2017 civic is still running strong 😆

Beware of the rear headroom in the hatchback!

2017 Honda Civic EX 4dr Hatchback (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)

I test drove an EX hatchback and eventually did *not* buy one. There was one particular aspect which gave me a pause but which many reviews seem to miss: the rear headroom. I'm tall, but nothing crazy (6ft) and when sitting in the back, my head was firmly against the ceiling. Curiously, that wasn't the case if I set completely straight, only when I reclined comfortably -- I would hit the edge of the ceiling with the back of my head. It seems that the ceiling in this car just isn't very flat and leans too much into the cabin near the edges. Considering how large this new Civic is compared to the older ones, I find this unacceptable. Note that I set in a sedan version for comparison and that one was OK -- this problem is specific to the hatchback.

Drive it before buying

Had quite a few Civics before so decided to buy the 2017 for its looks and power with excellent mileage. Should have asked to drive it for half a day before doing it.Did not take long to find a few things wrong with it. The main one was when I noticed the navigation system did not have a CD player like 99% of the others do. It actually looked like an after market unit on it. The steering wheel controls are not intuitive or in the wrong place. The volume control is very hard to adjust and the cruise control easy to turn off by accident. Should have gone for the Kia Forte which for about the same price it comes with Cadillac features, like seats with both A/C and Heat, memory power seats for two drivers and two remote controls for gates and garage doors. Not to mention the 5 year instead of 3 warranty. The main reason I decided not go buy it was for its lousy gas mileage. If you decide to buy the Civic I sugges you insist in getting at least two years of free maintenance from your salesman which is not hard to get.

I have had this car only 1 month. It has good power and I drive it mostly in Sport mode. Ride is somewhat stiff which is what I want and expect for a sporty car. Fuel mileage has been about 32 for the first 2 fill ups. The seats are great. Very good support and they fit my body and height. My previous 2 cars were a Prelude and an Acura RSX-S. The turbo has a totally different power range than the VTEC engine of course. Prelude was my all time favorite car. This comes real close and being just fun to drive every day. My Si in now 3.5 years old. I have less than 20,000 miles. I love this car. 5/18/2023 Love the car. 2 door is no longer available. Glad I got it 23,000 miles . So fun to drive. 11/27/2024 I still love this car. Just rolled over to 28,000 miles. Very reliable and so fun to drive.

Don't buy a vehicle with a CVT transmission

The CVT type transmission just hangs and the engine drones. If you have never driven anything else it may not bother you as much. I will NEVER buy another car with a CVT transmission.

WORST CAR SAVE YOUR MONEY

My vehicle has had issues with the Automatic Cruise Control, Tires Sensors, Bluetooth Radio, and Sensors in general. The vehicle has stop several times on the highway in the use of lane assistance. The Bluetooth radio gets stucks on the radio screen and sometimes does not allow you to switch to the radio mode until you turn off the car completely. The calls do not always go through when attempting to make a call. The vehicle’s automatic cruise control is the worse; the car decrease the speed and even stops the car completely while driving for no apparent reason. The only positive about the car the break hold, but other than that it is a horrible, pricey investment.

I ve had more HONDAS thru the years than a NORMAL person would mention....This is for newly retired folks with a 16 Odessy SE for People moving..If you want overall bang for your buck value wise..and use modern smart phone GPS apps...get an Accord Sport !! In the week we've had our SONIC GREY CIVIC TOURING HB..here are my impressions...WORST FEATURE ....CIVIC HORNS literally BLOW !! They are SO WEAK and ineffective they will put you in the GRAVEYARD IF YOU EVER NEED TO BE HEAD !!! Cmon HONDA WTF !! As I said I walked out of Accord touring V6 to Civic Touring...a step Down but not a big one...all the whistles and bells..Nice 560 watts entertainment system...Engine CVT and real world performance is very nice...Hot Summer right now..A/C is very good but NOT GREAT..HANDLES very nice..definitely hear tire noise vs Accord but time will tell..EVERYTIME you're out on the HIGHWAY someone what's to play JOHNNY BOY RACER and drive like an AHOLE...Last time I had this game being played was with Mustang...Build quality fit and finish PAINT seem GOOD...No reason not to get 40 plus on road at highway speed...I THINK YOU COULD RUN IT LIKE YA STOLE IT ALL DAY LONG AND GET 20 plus...have used PADDLE shifters on other Hondas...likeable feature...PREMIUM GAS RECOMMENDED...mix it up every other or third tank should be fine..I'm a BIG DUDE and I fit in drivers AOK...pass front OK...back FOGETABOUTIT..Wife likes the MINI COOPERS...so part of the puzzle in purchase....If you can keep your foot off the gas and make smooth driving you can get AMAZING mileage with V6 sedan..non touring..have gotten 40 plus and Hi thirties when highway driving with the rat pack...I think this will be a welcome addition to the stable...THE EXT SEDAN and EX HB are very nice but several grand less...PS ACCORD INSURANCE is LESS than CIVICS....look before you leap !! A veering of the road opinion but these are initial observations....PS Wife likes mucho PSS more blind spots than Accord also..PSSS the 1.5 turbo will go in the Honda hall of fame.... 2020 Update..lease up ...replaced with identical car...new one has better headlights and lots more sound insulation...plus I had equity in lease and knocked payment down SIXTY BUCKS..LOVE BOTH 17 and 20 sport touring hatchback civic..

I have problems with the Honda safety features and cruise control. The car’s sensors are constantly sensoring other things on the road rather than other vehicles and when it actually does sense cars the vehicle completely stops. The randomly stops when I am driving. I have taken the car in to get check by the dealership I bought it from on several occasions, but it supposedly passes the computer. I gone to other dealerships to trade it in for another vehicle, but everyone says that the car is not worth the price and they cannot help me. Be smart and stay away from this vehicle. The dealership will try to offer you “the top of the line accessories”, but honestly they aren’t worth putting you life at risk and the dealership doesn’t deliver on its promise.

The technology is too complicated. My 2003 Honda Accord was much easier to use. The navigation absolutely sucks in this new car. The navigation was so much better in my 2003 Honda Accord. For example, in my 2003 Honda Accord, I could press a button to repeat the directions. This new navigation unit does not have that repeat button. Also, my old navigation unit had the previous trips stored so you could pull up a previous trip. This new navigation system does not have that so you have to continue to enter the address. Also, the stupid navigation unit continues to give wrong directions. I paid a lot of money for this navigation unit, and it was a waste of money!!! The radio is digital and is difficult to use. You have to press the buttons over and over and then often changes to a station you do not want. Very frustrating!

1.5T= POWAAAA!

This is just a first impression/ short term review so far.Civic Hatchback LX Orchid White. I only had the car about 2 weeks and have 465mi. My work is just north of 1 mile away and I just want to break it in already! For a base model car its not very... basic. Although the wheels aren't the prettiest, I appreciate that Honda didn't slap on a set of steelies w ugly hub caps. I originally wanted a Sonic Grey since my neighbor has one and it looks fantastic! Anyway, the wheels- they look best on the orchid white. I am actually not a big fan of the ex wheels so I am glad those aren't on my car. What I like- 1.5T= POWAAAA! light weight, Piano Black trim, back up camera, huge side mirrors, practicality. What I don't like- OEM Bulbs ( halogen in a projector= dim lighting), arm rest padding ( they couldn't just use soft plastic instead of cloth? ), rear window is always foggy, no foot or hand brake, muffler tips or lack thereof ( dual exhaust and they're hidden... why?), front windows are slow going up and down, Dirt easily gets between the windows. I've already ordered a set of Phillips Crystal Vision from Amazon and that will pretty much remedy my biggest gripe about the car. What I've done to it- purchased floor mats to match the beige interior, seat covers, window visors. What I plan to do- 35-55% tint, muffler tips, OEM mud guards, brighter headlight bulbs. It may seem like I have a few gripes about this car but at the end of the day; It's the best car I've ever had. If anything, I would say that the LX is actually the best bang for your money within the Civic and hatchback segment.

The new Civic hatchback looks nice, but that's about it. It is very difficult to get in and out of. The seats are not very comfortable. I realize that it is a small car, but the interior is cramped compared to other small cars. It seems as if there is not enough sound insulation in the car, as the engine is very noisy. The climate controls are not readily accessible: the fan speed control is in a separate menu within the touch screen and is not centrally located. (A button or knob would be easier to use.) The cloth on the cargo cover looked to be snagged/uneven. The car is very over priced at $27,000+. You can buy a hybrid vehicle, which is more economic, for less than this non-hybrid Civic.

I bought this new and sold it a year later. The bluetooth does not work, gets hung up or does not work at all. The brakes on this car are awful and you get lower back pain from the seat on long rides. This is a commuter car and that is it, add to that $120 oil changes, yes Hondas are now expensive to maintain. Also you can only get the high MPGs with mid grade fuel. I would go for a Volkswagen honestly, this Civic was not designed well. I would rather have better brakes for the winter than fake giant plastic air intakes.

I changed my 2011 Audi A4 for this car. It is absolutely awesome to drive it. The acceleration is very responsive, very little turbo Lag. Nothing compared to my previous A4, which had a huge turbo lag. This car drives 3 times better than my previous Audi, really. The interior is very nice, very good design. There are a few stock things that really suck on the Hatch Sport 2017. The headlights are very average. The sound could be A LOT better. The Bluetooth system is not great, but these are all things that can be upgraded/modified. The mods on this care are super reasonable, price wise. This car is super easy to modify, you can do it yourself, like I did. I do get a lot on complements on this car. Very happy for my purchase, I could not be happier. The stock 18"s are very cool, I love them. They do make the ride a bit hard, but it is also part of the suspension, which is very sporty.

Better than I expected

No maintenance issues with the car so far; we have 700 miles on the car. The turbo engine and CVT combination is a *great* bit of engineering - superior low-end torque *and* great mileage. There is a tiny bit of turbo lag, but for daily commuting and long distance trips it's a non-issue. We test drove a Mazda3 Grand Touring before the Civic and that engine had to be flogged to get the same acceleration. And unlike my friend's 2.5i Subaru Outback, this engine/CVT does not annoy me with constant RPM droning. The CVT seems to find the right RPM for the moment. Unlike my 2006 Highlander which has horrible down-shift lag when passing other cars, this car "downshifts" *right now*. The car handles well, not as good as a 2017 GTI, but definitely better than the other compact cars I've owned (2000 Accord, 2004 Corolla, 2010 Corolla) and tested. Cornering turn-in is much better than expected for a front-wheel-drive car. The driver seat is one of the best fits ever for me and I'm six feet tall. On the other hand, the passenger seat sits too low in the car for both me and my wife. The entertainment system took a while to figure out and is a bit quirky. The user interface could be better. Interior fit and finish is great. Overall great car. One of our best car buys ever.
