Update after a Year...
I have now owned my 2013 Civic EX sedan for about a year. I initially had issues with seat comfort due to the aggressively tilted headrest but have fixed that by modifying it somewhat. I must say the car has performed flawlessly for the year I have owned it. It delivers a quiet, solid-feeling drive each day to work. Honda knows how to build a solid, easy to drive car unlike any other manufacturer. The "connected" feel of the driving experience is something only Honda really does well in this price range.
Not perfect, but hoping for reliability
I bought this Honda for one reason and one reason only: reliability. So In one year I have manged to clock 28,000 miles and have done nothing to the car outside of normal maintenance, which is great. I have been able to achieve 50 mpg with careful, skilled driving on a one off, fluke of a drive. I can routinely obtain 42 mpg with respectable driving and 33-35 mpg with a heavy foot. The brakes are not the best as I have locked them up a few times without noticing the ABS pulse from the pedal. Also, there is a blind spot from the roof pillar between the windshield and left door that is very annoying on mountain roads. Altogether, a good car and I'm happy I bought it.

update (Nov 4, 2022) No longer own the car
Updated review (Nov 4, 2019): This is a dependable car. It takes me to all the local places I need to visit: grocery stores, barber shop, community pool, concert halls and the downtown restaurants. It is super reliable. My past two years' expenses were standard upkeep related: gas, oil change, new tires, front end alignment new battery and new brake shoes. I am going to keep it for at least two to three years. Several locals already expressed interest in buying it. I know I will get something back to put towards my next car. The following was written in 2017: I am updating my review after over 4 years of ownership. One very annoying problem is fatigue in my hands; the steering wheel is hard. Steering and turning on trips longer than a couple hours are punishing on older people. Imagine if I have arthritis, how much pain I have to endure. Now my wife drives and likes it because of the fuel economy. She ( 5 ft 2 in) complains about the rear view through the back window. She refuses to look at the rear camera and is technologically challenged. After driving long trips my back started to get stiff. A lower back support may be the next item I should try. I also added a seat support to reduce butt sore from long trips. Maintenance cost has been higher than average at the dealership. (Nov 4, 2020) My kid now drives this car. He likes it. I mbought a different car.

3 days in and loving it!
I just leased a 2013 Honda Civic Coupe EX, and so far I'm loving it! Now, to be fair, I upgraded from a 2000 Ford Focus LX with manual everything, so being enthusiastic about a new car wasn't a very tall order. I probably would have been just as happy with a new Yugo if there still was such a thing. But overall, I love the body style and interior design of the Coupe EX. The dash is laid out very well and all the controls are within easy reach. The ONLY potential downside I see is the quality of the cloth seats...I'm just not sure how long that fabric is going to keep looking good. Handles very well, and is a nice smooth, quiet ride. Pretty good stereo system too with the 7 speakers.
Nice to own a honda again...
'10 Jetta lease was up. I dislike the styling of the new Jettas so I went in for a '13 Accord Sport and left with a '13 Civic LX. Both great cars but I enjoyed the handling and overall feel of the Civic a bit more. I now prefer the Civic dashboard over a typical one (surprisingly). I also own a '12 Subaru Impreza which seems a lot zippier to 40mph but it's also not nearly as quite (loud CVT and road noise) which for a daily commute of 120 miles is very important. My daily commute broken down is 40 miles city and 80 miles highway. I average 37mpg not using ECO but I use cruise control often. Over 400 miles per tank. I get compliments from my co-workers for what it is...a nice compact car.
my 2nd civic coupe ex
i had a '03 civic ex with 131k miles and for 10 yrs, it was nearly perfect. in its 11th year it was showing its age just a little. i think i got spoiled at not having to put money into it, outside of regular maintenance. anyway, i figured almost 11 yrs was a pretty good run and honda had 0.9% for *60* months, which is rare for honda. also, the 2013 got really good reviews as a bounce back from a semi-disappointing 2012 model. the comfort of the seats (tho i've read some complaints) and the road noise is MUCH improved from my '03 model, aswell, imo. the technology made a big jump, too. the back up camera is nice. i hope the reliability continues. my former civic was the best car i've owned, BY FAR. after 3 yrs, i'm still very happy with my purchase. my one complaint is the MPG isn't always as good as i'd hoped when doing city driving (even with the econ button on). i have a pretty heavy foot, however. on longer, highway trips (using cruise), the MPG has been very good. i also wish it had a push button start but the new ones have them now. the original tires only lasted about 25k miles. that was disappointing, aswell, but it seems like this is always the case with new cars.

1,500 miles so far
I've had this car for 12 days, & I've got 1,500 miles on it. I love it so much so far, but I can't really speak truthfully about its reliability b/c I haven't had any problems w/ it since I haven't had it for very long at all. I drive about 75% highway & 25% city, & I have an average of 36.75 MPG.
Great Car. Every day (and fill up) I love it more
I bought this car because of a need for a reliable car and it has lived up to its expectation. Looks wise it's awesome. With its aerodynamic posture and sporty looks... Something you can't get with other brands. Coupe looks like it's own model. Interior wise it's a good mix with colors but what is most impressing is the dash and screen that displays a large amount of information. Performance wise it has enough power to pass and accelerate without you having to gun it. 140 hp and 39 mpg without a turbo? You thank it later down the road when you won't have to pay for repairs becauase the engine won't have added stress from a turbo. I love this car and plan to keep it for a very long time.
Best car I've ever had
I read once that driving a Honda Civic is like having a conversation with someone who knows exactly what you mean. I couldn't agree more. Motojournalists will tell you that the Toyota is a few 16th of an inch longer, the Mazda has a few more horsepower and the Nissan can run the quarter mile a fraction of a second quicker. What they don't understand is the work that goes into making the car do things it can't on paper. Like steer or accelerate as well as you need it to, when you really need it to, regardless of whether the numbers support it. Or pack the same amount of stuff in the trunk that used to fit into your SUV's, because you don't want to leave anything behind. Or cruise along in the snow, passing cars that have 4WD and twice the ground clearance, and are stuck, because you really need to get somewhere. So... In case you're wondering why it has no signal mirrors or those trendy LED dotted daytime running lights, it's because Honda's priority is to make this car your faithful, trusted companion, not a faux-fur and pleather fashion accessory where the compromises are evident throughout the driving experience. Motorcyclists and pickup truck drivers get really mad when a Honda Civic passes them, because it doesn't make sense (it doesn't even have a turbo), but, hey. Sometimes you need to have a little fun.

Amazingly thrifty on gas
Just bought a 2013 Civic coupe with automatic transmission for my wife last week. On a lark, I wanted to see how much mileage I could squeeze out of this car using the lightest foot possible. I needed to drive to the airport - a nearly 50 mile round trip. On the trip there, I drove with no AC at speeds between 60 and 70. The on board mileage computer registered 53 mpg! There is a minor downhill bias since I live a few hundred feet above sea level and the airport is near sea level. On the trip back, I decided to use the AC. When I arrived home, the MPG computer for the total trip read 43 MPG. That's close to a hybrid's MPG! I am delighted with this car!
2013 Civic with 1120000 miles
Bought new in 2013. It has been a great car, super reliable. Avg mpg has been around 33. Only issue is clear coat started peeling off in spots. This car is garage kept and washed on a regular basis so feel that this is perhaps a factory issue. Another issue is thin metal. It doesn't take much to make a small dent but suspect this is with all compact cars nowadays. I do my own general maintenance which decreases cost of ownership significantly and is not that difficult. If your looking for general transportation that's reliable you can't beat a Civic.

Gets the job done!
Had purchased a 2012 model with a 5 speed automatic, but after 3 yrs I just missed driving a stick so much. I sold the '12 to a family member and, because I loved the car otherwise, I found my '13 manual ex coupe and 4 yrs later, I am still very happy. Honda makes the best compact car manual trannys. The clutch and precision shifter are a joy, even in traffic! I wish people would all ditch their cvts and bring back the manuals! Improvements over my '12 are the two tone wheels, automatic climate control, back up camera, and nicer interior plastics. Gripes are the tiny toy car sized battery. Sit in your parked car listening to the radio for 90 minutes and the car won't start! Also, the R18 motor has no guts. I miss the SR20DE in my old Sentra which had the best of both worlds. Lastly, the bluetooth is buggy, sometimes failing to connect. I have to pull over and turn the car completely off, then on for it to pair. These are minor complaints as no car is perfect. I recommend this car, especially with a manual! **Update 8/19/20: Car is still performing well at 83,000 miles. I can't find the reason for the gradual drop in mpg to 31 over the past year. I've replaced spark plugs and cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body. There are no codes being thrown. 31 mpg is still quite good, but it's just weird that this happened. Still very happy with the car. ***Update 8/19/21. Did a more thorough throttle body cleaning and the mpg improved to near-original level of 37mpg. Pennzoil 0w20 synthetic performs best of all oils I've tried in this car. ***Update 9/1/23*** Car still going strong at 109000 miles. Has some clear coat failure on roof and trunklid, but that's normal here in Hawaii. Very happy with my car, especially with how new car prices have skyrocketed lately. I wish I had the black interior instead of tan, but I had no choice at the time of purchase.

Outstanding reliability, fun to drive.
Great vehicle for a commuter car that is also fun to drive. It has decent styling and boring reliability. Has needed nothing for the year I have owned it so far, besides oil changes, and tire rotations every 5000 miles. I should have purchased a domestic car so I could learn how to fix them.

Another hit for Honda
I rack up a lot of mileage and I have kids to shuttle around so I need a car to be 100% reliable and inexpensive to run. I also think dealer service is a waste of money and the only service I perform on my cars is an oil change and tire rotation at whichever quick-lube joint I happen to be driving by when the maintenance minder goes on. I could drive a Toyota, but talk about bland. Civics are the perfect blend of sporty and economical, have great driving manners, good build quality and are more than powerful enough to appeal to most drivers. The 2013 is no exception, not to mention it's so classy and well equipped you really wonder how long people are going to waste money buying luxury cars.
Great Mileage, but feels cheap
Bought the manual because I did not like how bad shifting felt in automatic. Pros: mileage is insanely good - averaging about 37 combined with 75% highway and 25% around town (I drive pretty conservatively, highway is cruise control with econ button on). Safety - was rear ended, not injured, car held up fine. Fairly quiet and comfortable - good space for a smaller car. Cons: It was relatively cheap and it feels cheap. I had a VW golf before this and it felt like a tank in comparison (mileage sucked). The paint already has a chip after one month. And there is a sloshing sound that comes from the gas tank that is really noticeable if you have the radio off.
uncomfortable seats
The gas mileage is great but taking a trip this is not the car to drive. My back and hips hurt so bad I can hardly stand. After my trip it has been hard going back to work I wish I can find a replace seat.

Great all around car
I bought this car new in May of 2013. I now have 10k trouble free miles on it, only requiring two oil changes. The car starts, drives, and runs flawlessly. Gas mileage around town in the winter is not great, but highway mileage is excellent. Maneuvering and parking in NYC is a breeze in this car. Interior is comfortable, and instruments are well laid out. The stock tires are fine for spring/summer/fall driving, but leave much to be desired for winter driving in snow and ice. get a second set of wheels with dedicated winter tires and you will be fine. This has been/is a great car. It is comfortable, economical, and adequately powerful. I consider it a good buy.
2013 review 135K miles
Purchased new in 2013. Have averaged about 18K miles a year. No issues whatsoever with one exception. Paint job has not been the best. Seems clear coat is prematurely flaking off in a car that is garaged nightly. Appears from Web search that this has been a problem but at this point i can and will have to live with it. I have avgd 34 MPG and the car has been absolutley rock solid reliable. I do my own oil changes and brakes so that makes ownership alot less expensive. Tendency is to keep cars at 10 years. Sad to see the Coupe is no longer made.

Awesome Car
Wow, this car ahs been nothing but reliable in every sense of the word.. ive owned this car for 2 years before i traded it in for a 2019 civic. and with in that time, the only repairs i had to do was just wheel bearings and replaced the battery. that was it. total cost about 500 bucks in total in repairs for 2 years. Absolutely love this car it was very stylish and easy to drive. loved the display screens and easy blutooth connectivity. stylish interior everything about this civic was just awesome and i will be buying this version again to keep for a life time. its that worth it. then again what do you expect from one of the most reliable cars on the planet to date.

Just make the cheap payment
I've put 20k on mine in one year oil changes only. Nothing goes wrong with these little cars. Road noise on rough highways make Bluetooth phone useless. 30 bucks gets you cross country on highway with cruise and eco set. Kick back and don't worry about breaking down.

Good value horrible ride
Great car, love the test drive. I now regret the purchase. I have NEVER experience such an uncomfortable ride. It hurts to drive the care, Im now debating to lose $2K and trade the car in for something else. I was a true Honda fan, I have owned Honda vehicles for over 20 years. I'm very disappointed "Honda you should be ashamed".
Great Car but Oil Consumption Excessive
Update (4/9/21). I sold the 2013 Honda Civic EX and wished I hadn't. It was a great car to drive and the only real complaint I had was the oil usage. I attribute that to too long between oil changes by the previous owner. I looked for weeks to buy another 2012 or 2013 but the price of used cars recently have skyrocketed and I'm not willing to pay what people are asking. I bought a 2002 Honda Accord EX 2dr 5-speed manual coupe instead for $1500. Has 400k miles but looks and drives like a car with half the mileage and doesn't use one drop of oil. First Honda I've owned that hasn't. The key is 3500 mile oil changes with synthetic. Anyway I miss that 2013 this review was written for. If it had 30 more horsepower and a better stereo it would have been the perfect car. Oh, btw. I looked at a 2017 Honda Civic Coupe with a 5-speed manual w/34k miles that I would have loved to own but $19,000. Crazy. Update (4/8/20). After owning the 2013 Honda Civic EX Coupe for 6 months and 10k miles I can tell you the comments I made below are still true with one exception. The car used oil, about a quart every 1000 miles. With only 120k miles on the odometer this is a bit excessive. A work colleague recently sold an Accord, went 300k miles but said it used oil its whole life. The Civic he owned before that did too. The internet is full of stories where Honda engines are using oil. Anyway I sold the car, not because of the oil usage even though it disappoints me. It's such a great economy car but don't think I'll buy another Honda. Recently bought my 2013 Civic EX coupe from the original owner. I needed an inexpensive car with proven reliability and great fuel economy. I've put about 2000 miles on it so far and for the most part love the car. My average MPG is about 35 in ECO mode which I leave on most of the time. I did not want a CVT transmission which is the reason I picked the 2013 model Civic (the 2012 Civic was a 1st year redesign which got unfavorable reviews and the 2014/15 models went with the CVT transmission). The ride is a little stiff but sporty. Car handles great and steering is almost perfect. Transmission shifts smooth and seems perfectly mated to the engine. Road noise isn't too bad with the Michelin tires and the brakes feel just about right. The car sits real low so can be a challenge getting in and out. Front seats are comfortable, very supportive. The 7-speaker premium stereo is a little disappointing despite having a sub and its advertised power output but good enough you can live with it. Car is easy to maintain for a DIY'er like myself. I was able to change the plugs and serpentine belt and it also has a transmission dipstick and drain plug so you can do your own transmission drain/refills ( that is becoming harder to find in newer cars but is absolutely essential to long transmission life). I expect this car to last for years and hear some go 300-500k.

2013 Civic EX Coupe
I bought my 2013 EX Coupe because I was so impressed with the 2001 HX 5-Speed Coupe I had owned previously. That car had 352,000 miles and was still going strong, The boy I sold it to is still driving it to this day. It used a quart of oil every 1000 miles and the power steering leaked like a barrel full of holes ( I just pulled the belt and made a manual steering car out of it ), but the air still froze you out and it got 55mpg on the highway. Getting back to the 2013. It was sleek. The 2 door coupes look good to me, better than the 4 doors. The car I bought was used with 100,000 miles. It was an EX which meant it had alloy wheels, sunroof and the so-called premium radio which was far from premium. The best mpg I could get was around 43 in perfect conditions. Average mixed driving I got 34 which is not bad. The car is underpowered like most 4cyl cars with automatics. The interior was comfortable and the futuristic dash layout takes some getting used to. The steering and handling is as close to perfect as you can get in my opinion. If only the car had more power. I was very disappointed the car used oil like my 2001, about one quart every 1000 miles. The previous owner said he only used synthetic oils at the correct weight and changed it every 10,000 miles which I think is too long. I've read all the propaganda about oil changes going longer these days but my belief is this is the result of those long oil changes. I ended up selling the car after owning for less than a year. Went to a Toyota that doesn't use a drop of oil between oil changes. I really liked the Civic and think it would go 250k plus as long as you keep oil in it. The resell was great by the way. That is another good thing about Civics. I'm tempted to buy a low mile 2001-2005 5-speed coupe again, if I can find one.

Fuel Economy
I have never received good fuel economy with this car. It has never given me what was advertised as 28 in the city and 39 on highway. It has never gone past 23 miles to the gallon. I am very disappointed in this cars fuel economy. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the car and it is now only 1 month old.
Third time charmer
This is our third Civic LX in a row, which kind of says it right there. I only bought this one because I promised our '07 to my college-age son. Not as zippy as the '07 with Econ button pressed, but I did get 41.7 mpg on the first road trip. Ride is also quieter and smoother than before. And one annoyance fixed: The driver's side floor mat has EZ-twist buttons for removal instead of those frustrating hooks! I've rented just about every other small car, including a Corolla in '10, but the Civic remains the gold standard of its class.
Nicely priced but question the factory MPG for CA
Your review of the Honda Civic Ex sedan automatic mpg. It is false and so far presentation of the information is at best misleading in the state of California. I have almost 5,000 miles on a 2013 Honda Civic EX and I have yet to average 29 miles city and highway. I have used the car's on board computer which seems to inflate the actual mpg and then manual calculations of what I filled the tank in number of gallons to cross check. While like the civic my main reason for buying the gas only verse hybrid model was that the gas model was supposed to get 38 mpg. When I asked the Honda sales and service folks what was going on I was getting mixed messages. One, wait until the engine is broken in.
LOVED MY 13 COUPE!!
Owned my car for 4 years (2016-2020) she had dents and a couple chipped windows (let’s call it character) 😂 but I just had a baby and needed something bigger than the 2 door .. upgraded to the crv NEVER had any problems with it.. only replaced the tires and the wiper blades on that car .. not bad for putting over 80k on her.

Beautiful Car
I waited Five Years for the Civic to be redesigned and thought the 2013 was "it". I think the behind is the best-looking. Still - after 3 years - own the vehicle - I still have negative issue with the outward visibility. I just feel like the cars on the left & the right are going to crash into me. so, I enjoy the car - but just have to constantly be aware of how I drive - park - it's not super convenient like my old 1997 car was. So, I have a car I am ho-hum about. (?) not perfect - like my 1997 car was Perfect. so, I don't know when I am going to make a move to find another "perfect driving car". So, we're looking at, I guess 90 percent ALL good and the 10 percent a bummer for me. I wish they would make cars "SMALLER" but because people are fat and get fatter - they make cars Bigger. the 1997 Honda Civic was the absolutely PERFECT CAR - I'm telling you!!

Beautiful but disappointing
The car is beautiful. Do not get 40 MPG hwy as was told by dealer. Does not handle well in snow. Good fast heater. Visors are lower quality than my 2008 same model. Also center armrest in back seat is narrower. Car hesitates when turned on. Also hesitates when accelerated from a dead stop. My 2008 just went. This car drags. 2008 more peppy and more fun to drive. Same model
